Abstract The Jatinegara Transit Area is an area of stations, residences and markets that have the potential to be developed into a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) area. The development aims to create a sustainable city and will become a hybrid area of a new residential ecosystem. In the research location, the rate of urbanization is relatively high which causes social and environmental problems that are very dangerous to the health and welfare of residents. Problems related to the environment include: increased CO2 emissions, loss of biodiversity, air pollution and climate change. Social problems involve the reduced space for interaction between residents due to the fulfilment of housing. Holistic planning is needed to solve this problem, through social and environmental approaches to create a sustainable city by developing a hybrid space model. The research method uses analytical methods (planning documents, design projects and literature), observation methods, comparative methods, etc. The first stage is mapping the existing conditions and the next stage is creating a model that applies a hybrid space. The conclusion of this research is that hybrid space is an alternative to improve air quality and provide public space for community interaction in terms of environmental and social sustainability.

Purpose West Bay, the Business District of Doha, the capital city of the State of Qatar, is facing an urban regeneration phase due to the construction of the West Bay Central Train Station, a four-storey underground building hosting the intersection of two metro lines – one long-distance train and one people mover. The development of the transit village, or transit-oriented development, is raising concerns related to the need to enhance liveability (as urban quality of life) and sense of place (considering the local cultural identity). The purpose of this paper is to investigate existing urban elements, such as transit stations, as well as their impact on the liveability and identity of the place and to define a comprehensive urban regeneration strategy for the development of the distinctive urban village of West Bay. Design/methodology/approach The analysis and data collection were based on the type of data as tangible aspects which mainly include the physical, and aspects such as diversity, density, connectivity, transportation systems and public realm. Intangible factors are concluded from close and direct site observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, as a face-to-face type of data collection with key persons in Qatar Rail, the Ministry of the Municipality and public work authorities, where the intangible aspects were briefed by economic aspects, environmental situation, social pattern and human behaviours. After siting the base ground of theoretical knowledge and site condition analysis, the authors identified a group of key factors that respond to the targeted (tangible and intangible) aspects and threats, to propose a design treatment for the site threats and highlighted issues in addition to a group of recommendations and design strategies (Charmaz, 2006; Marshall and Rossman, 2010). Findings From the data analysis of the site and by revisiting the literature review, a group of recommendations are formulated. The authors divided the recommendations into two types according to their method of application. The first is the design approach, where the authors propose integrated design proposals to tackle and solve the highlighted issues from the findings of site analysis (diversity, density, connectivity in addition to economic, social and environmental factors). Meanwhile, the second part represents the systematic recommendations that should be adopted and implemented to enhance the existing situation and form a guideline for further developments. Research limitations/implications This research study could be further expanded to urban planning, urban design, social development and environmental engineering. Urban design and social development chiefly focus on the relationship between built and unbuilt forms with an eye to creating healthy, sustainable communities for current and future generations. Originality/value Because issues of social sustainability and urban design have failed to attract suitable levels of attention from local scholars, gaps have arisen in the research. Accordingly, this research study investigates the relationship between social sustainability and urban design standards in the State of Qatar with an eye to translating theoretical knowledge into applicable principles of urban planning. In doing so, it will help close the gaps in knowledge related to Qatar and GCC countries.

The social and vocational integration of vulnerable groups is an important aspect of social sustainability. Former users of the residential child protection system represent such a group. The purpose of our research was to investigate the social and vocational integration of individuals raised in the child protection system in Romania. Their experiences during and after their time in residential care are analyzed. The research sample was composed of 23 interviewees (18 male and 5 female) with an average age of thirty-five at the time of the interview (SD = 7.49). Our research method was a qualitative one, based on a semi-structured interview. The results paint a generally bleak image of life in such institutions, both before the fall of communism in Romania in December 1989 and subsequently. In addition, the respondents’ transition from institutional life to independent living was full of challenges. Nevertheless, most of the respondents have demonstrated a remarkable level of resilience, based on factors such as education, self-esteem, work, a life partner and the ability to acquire new skills. As a general conclusion, our study has shown that a sustainable social development plan should include social policies which strive for the de-institutionalization of the child protection system by preventing the separation of children from their biological families or, where necessary, by finding family-type solutions for children in difficulty. If institutional childcare is to continue, it must be accompanied by consistent efforts to prepare these children for their transition to independent living.

Public spaces are vital elements of settlement fabrics that animate communities together in one place. Nevertheless, most public places are used for recreational purposes only without building on communal activities, especially in religious aspects. Therefore, to achieve robust social sustainability, this study aims to identify the key indicators for ensuring social sustainability of traditional settlements’ public spaces. This study explores the typologies of public spaces found in traditional settlements that fill the needs of the local community. A mixed methodology was used to map and observe the public spaces and the communal activities held in two traditional Malay settlements in Kuala Terengganu. The bulk of the data were randomly collected from 400 residents by using a questionnaire survey to identify the most relevant factors that influence social sustainability. The results show that mosques have been listed as the highest preference of public space in the two sampled settlements. The study outlines three key qualities that lead the community to choose the mosque as the most important public space: 1) convenient access, 2) comfortable and clean, and 3) social aspects. This paper concludes on how these findings contribute to the improvement of quality of life, social interaction and social cohesion to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally.

Abstract: The conservation of cultural heritage, especially the identity of traditional architecture in the city of Denpasar, is an effort to strengthen the architectural character of Denpasar. The uniqueness of Denpasar architecture is the peciren bebadungan while the red brick pattern. This also gives an identity to the architectural fasade of Denpasar as a creative city that is appear with local traditions and culture. The signage is one of the important architectural and interior elements and becomes the vocal point. This is due to its function which is visually in front of (building facade), which functions to provide information related to the building. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative method, with the selection of objects using purposive sampling technique. The result of the research is that the signage design does not reflect the strong character of Denpasar architecture. There are two most basic things, which become the main criteria, that was the use of the peciren bebadungan (the form of a red brick pattern arranged) in such as a unique of Denpasar architecture that is different from architecture in another regencies in Bali. The second is the use of Balinese script as a local Balinese identity. These two things are what the authors prioritize in designing, so that creative signage and local wisdom is created. Keywords: signage, local genius, public space, creative city.

In Athens and Istanbul, two cities that have emerged as epicentres of protest within the broader conjuncture of contemporary political mobilization across the Mediterranean, the transformative potential of political street art has become particularly evident. Staging a dialogic encounter between the two cities, this chapter examines how in each case interventions into public space as well as their circulation in the digital realm create, according to Can Altay, ‘hybrid space[s] of resistance’ that sustain political performances both grounded in the real world and beyond. Attentive to the resonances as well as the differences between the two cities and their respective political configurations, I reflect on manifestations of political street art in the context of contemporary social movements.

This article adopts a neo-Gramscian perspective to analyze an impactful case of workers’ resistance escalating into civil society and the state, over the course of a social crisis triggered by employee suicides at the main French telecom firm in 2009 to 2010. On the basis of press data and interviews with key actors of the resistance, we produce a narrative of hegemonic transformation in three phases: (a) the rise of a new “hegemonic despotism” steering workers’ resistance within the firm, (b) the emergence of a counter-hegemony reaching out to the broader civil society, and (c) hegemonic transformation via state intervention. We contribute to the theoretical understanding of resistance by highlighting the role of a “hybrid space” spanning the firm, civil society, and the state in this “cascade effect” of resistance. Hybrid spaces enable the sharing, development, and leverage of discursive and material resources across the three main spheres of neoliberal hegemony.
