Abstract Studies on bio-ecosystems sustainability and feasibility are urgent because many mangrove ecosystems have been converted into ponds as a source of livelihood. This study aimed to evaluate the sustainability level of the mangrove bio-ecosystem in Dabong Village and formulate the most appropriate strategy in silvofishery development. The method used was a field survey to obtain secondary and primary data. Bio-ecosystem feasibility analysis was carried out descriptively, qualitatively and quantitatively based on data compilation of water quality, soil fertility, macrozoobenthos and mangrove density. SWOT analysis was used in developing the strategies. Based on the study results, the land suitability matrix for silvofishery development in Dabong Village had a very suitable category (69.00%) regarding soil value conditions and water quality. The abundance of macrozoobenthos was 21 individual m2 -1 gatropoda, 30 individuals m2 -1 bivalves, and eight individuals m2 -1 crustaceans. Stand density values of Rhizophora apiculata, Avicennia alba, and Sonneratia alba ranged from 15-25 individuals m2 -1, 18-27 individuals m2 -1, and 14-24 individuals m2 -1, respectively. According to ecosystem characteristics, the strategy for using mangroves in the research site was to increase the bio-ecosystem strength and minimize the damage or degradation risks as a threat to the impact of mangrove ecosystem utilization using the silvofishery model. Its application could be an alternative for sustainable use of the mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract In northern China, river water originating from or flowing through forests often contains large amounts of oxygen-consuming organic substances, mainly humic substances. These substances are stable and not easily biodegradable, resulting in very high detection values of chemical oxygen demand. However, under natural conditions, the dissolved oxygen demand is not as high. Using experimental values to evaluate river water quality and the impact of human activities on water quality is thus unscientific and does not meet national development goals. In this study, the potential sources of high-concentration chemical oxygen demand in river water in two areas exposed to virtually no anthropogenic activities and strongly affected by humic substances, were analysed. The chemical oxygen demand contributed by humic substances (COD-HSs) was quantified using three methods. The results of water quality monitoring in 2017 and 2018 revealed that the chemical oxygen demand concentrations (5–44 mg/L) predominantly exceeded the standard (15 mg/L). The study results suggest that COD-HSs should be considered separately for objective evaluation and management of water quality, particularly in areas that are seriously affected by COD-HSs, to provide a scientific basis for formulating sustainable water quality management policies.

Microfinance has been viewed as a pathway for smallholder farming. This paper aims to investigate the impact of microfinance on smallholder farming. It examines the role of microfinance in the development of smallholder farming. This paper employs the integrated view of microfinance study as opposed to the ‘credit only’(minimalist) view. Using qualitative research methodology, the paper relies on literature review and primary data. Household level data (primary) were collected from a rural district (Masvingo Rural District) of Masvingo province in Zimbabwe. Data were collected from 250 microfinance participants (household heads) using questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. The findings show that microfinance had positive effects on accumulation of agricultural assets, income from agriculture, agricultural education, agricultural productivity, agri-business, consumption and health. However, the impact is limited due to lack of finance. Basic financial services are essential for the management of their smallholder farming activities. The practical implications are that the study results could be used by the government and development agencies for policy making. The paper recommends that microfinance should be harnessed as a useful intervention that can be employed to economically empower the smallholder rural agricultural sector. Keywords: microfinance, smallholder farming, integrated view, minimalist view. JEL Classification: G21, O13
