Abstract The problem of the relationship between strong magnetic swarms caused by solar flares and variations in seismicity is considered. The data on the temporal dependences of the parameters of seismic noise (average level, and standard deviation, RMS) recorded by the stations of the KNET seismic network have been used as the output data of monitoring the territory of the Bishkek geodynamic proving ground (Northern Tien Shan). The signatures of the influence of a magnetic swarm that occurred after an ultra-strong solar flare on September 6, 2017 have been established. The results obtained on the increase in seismic noise after this super-strong eruptive event are consistent with the results of studies on the influence of magnetic swarms on changes in regional seismicity.

The studies completed to-date on a relation of the Earth’s seismicity and solar processes provided the fuzzy and contradictory results. The main problem of this research is a lack of physical explanation of a mechanism of earthquake triggering by strong variations of space weather conditions. Based on results obtained in the field and laboratory experiments on earthquake triggering by DC pulses injection into the Earth crust we may assume that the similar triggering phenomena may occur after the strong electromagnetic impact to the earthquake source due to solar flares or geomagnetic storms. Numerical estimations demonstrated that telluric currents induced by geomagnetic pulsations generated by solar flare have the similar density at the depth of earthquake source location (10-6 A/m2) in comparison with the current density generated by artificial power sources (10-7 – 10-8 A/m2) resulted in observed spatiotemporal redistribution of seismic activity in the regions of Pamirs and Northern Tien Shan. For supporting the idea of a possible earthquake triggering by solar flares we carried out a statistical analysis of global and regional (Greece) seismicity behavior during the solar flare of X9.3 class occurred on September 6, 2017 (the strongest flare over the past thirteen years). We have discovered a new evidence of earthquake triggering due to the Sun-Earth interaction by simple comparison of a number of earthquakes before and after the strong solar flare. The global number of earthquakes (USGS catalog, M ≥ 4) for time window of ±11 days after the solar flare has increased by 68%, and the regional seismicity (Greece, EMSC catalog, M ≥ 3) has increased by 120%.

The paper considers experimental data obtained at stationary and regime points of magnetotelluric monitoring on the territory of the Bishkek geodynamic proving ground (Northern Tien Shan). The studies performed indicate the relationship of variations in the electromagnetic and seismic fields, lunar-solar tidal effects, seismic regime with the processes of fracturing. The results of the time-frequency analysis of the response of the geological environment to earthquakes in the electromagnetic field are presented, the features of manifestation depending on the location of the hypo-and epicenters of seismic events and their magnitude are considered. A number of responses in geophysical fields to remote and regional earthquakes of 2010-2020 with an energy class from 8 to 12 and their relationship with the extremes of lunar-solar tidal effects are considered.

The results of geophysical monitoring of seismically hazardous regions are of undoubted interest for studying the deep structure of the lithosphere, regional seismicity, modern geodynamics, etc. The work used experimental material, including the results of magnetotelluric monitoring and the catalogs of the KNET (Kyrgyzstan Telemetered Network), KRNET (Kyrgyz Republic Digital Network) and ISC (International Seismological Center) networks obtained in the seismically active zones of the Bishkek Geodynamic Proving Ground (Northern Tien Shan). The analysis of electromagnetic monitoring results of the Northern Tien Shan seismic generating zone was carried out in a wide frequency range. The data on the parameters of the electromagnetic field of the Earth’s crust in the Northern Tien Shan are generalized and systematized. Based on the analysis of these data, the dependence of the response of seismic events in electromagnetic parameters on the distance of earthquake epicenters was studied. The most likely reason for the occurrence of anomalous changes in the electromagnetic field is the activation of deformation processes during the preparation of strong earthquakes. The results of the time-frequency analysis are presented and the features of manifestation are considered depending on the location of the hypoand epicenters of seismic events and their magnitude. Regularities have been established in the behavior of tipper variations for remote and regional earthquakes for the first quarter of 2016 with an energy class from 6 to 10.

Abstract The relationship between space weather and earthquakes occurring in seismically active areas with the seismo-electromagnetic satellite CSES-01 data are observed. The study assumes the presence of possible ionospheric precursors of strong earthquakes. The sets of measuring instruments of the satellite and data are considered. Subsequently, to prove the non-random nature of the space weather effects, the results of ground-based geomagnetic or electromagnetic observations should be used, for example, magnetotelluric soundings (MTS). Stationary and regime points of the MTS network of the Research Station RAS in Bishkek (RS RAS) are suitable for these purposes in the Northern Tien Shan. The MTS data are presented in the form of hourly frequency-time series with system rotation from 0° to 180°. To obtain information on earthquakes, it is proposed to use data from the NEIC or ISC seismic catalog, since they aggregate data from regional catalogs, including the KNET seismological network maintained by the RS RAS. It is concluded that it is necessary to select the CSES-01 trajectories and times of flight over the territory of Kyrgyzstan and download the electric field detector (EFD) data. The results of comparing satellite and ground-based observations can be used in future technologies for short-term earthquake prediction.

Purpose The minimum masking level (MML) is the minimum intensity of a stimulus required to just totally mask the tinnitus. Treatments aimed at reducing the tinnitus itself should attempt to measure the magnitude of the tinnitus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the MML. Method Sample consisted of 59 tinnitus patients who reported stable tinnitus. We obtained MML measures on two visits, separated by about 2–3 weeks. We used two noise types: speech-shaped noise and high-frequency emphasis noise. We also investigated the relationship between the MML and tinnitus loudness estimates and the Tinnitus Handicap Questionnaire (THQ). Results There were differences across the different noise types. The within-session standard deviation averaged across subjects varied between 1.3 and 1.8 dB. Across the two sessions, the Pearson correlation coefficients, range was r = .84. There was a weak relationship between the dB SL MML and loudness, and between the MML and the THQ. A moderate correlation ( r = .44) was found between the THQ and loudness estimates. Conclusions We conclude that the dB SL MML can be a reliable estimate of tinnitus magnitude, with expected standard deviations in trained subjects of about 1.5 dB. It appears that the dB SL MML and loudness estimates are not closely related.

AbstractKnowledge about the long-term response of High Mountain Asian glaciers to climatic variations is paramount because of their important role in sustaining Asian river flow. Here, a satellite-based time series of glacier mass balance for seven climatically different regions across High Mountain Asia since the 1960s shows that glacier mass loss rates have persistently increased at most sites. Regional glacier mass budgets ranged from −0.40 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Central and Northern Tien Shan to −0.06 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Eastern Pamir, with considerable temporal and spatial variability. Highest rates of mass loss occurred in Central Himalaya and Northern Tien Shan after 2015 and even in regions where glaciers were previously in balance with climate, such as Eastern Pamir, mass losses prevailed in recent years. An increase in summer temperature explains the long-term trend in mass loss and now appears to drive mass loss even in regions formerly sensitive to both temperature and precipitation.

In this work the relationship between the Selic rate and some bank parameters defined by the so-called Basel Accords is studied. The cross-correlation between the Selic rate and the parameters is used to explain how these parameters affect the Selic rate and vice-versa so as to define the predictability of the Selic rate using (some of) these parameters as inputs. A model is then proposed for predicting the Selic rate based on some specific parameters using fuzzy logic ideas, which dealt with a partitioning of the universe of discourse using clusters related to the output data distribution. The proposed model is compared to four other known models in the literature and showed to have better performance in average compared to all other models.
