Abstract Environmental problems and environmental protection triggered a rapid development of natural fibres as sustainable materials for the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures. Synthetic fibre polymer composite materials have been widely accepted by the construction industries as an effective external reinforcement material to rehabilitate deficiencies in existing structures. These materials have exceptional performance such as high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance and lightness. However, the disadvantages include high costs during manufacturing and end-of-life services, less environmentally friendly and causing adverse effects on human health. This article presents an experimental program on the use of natural fibres as reinforcement in composite materials for structural strengthening. Different types of natural fibre fabrics (hemp, flax, mixed hemp and cotton) in terms of their mechanical properties were studied. The fibre and fibre fabric sheets were tested in tension test and compared with carbon and glass fibre fabric sheet as reference. So, this study carries out the effect of natural hemp and flax fibre fabric thickness on ultimate loads of specimens. In addition, the ultimate load and stiffness of strengthened beams were investigated. In fact, the results show that the reinforcement technique allows to increase the load-bearing of strengthened structure by 8% to 35% in bending tests.

In engineering, composites have indicated a more profound influence in the recent development of materials with high strength to weight ratio. The purpose of this work is to identify the different and specific properties which a composite possesses when various reinforcement fibres are used in different epoxy matrix material. Composite materials have a major role to play with meeting that requirement. Many natural fibre composite materials possess good mechanical properties but still lack in satisfying applications requirements and alternate for which is seen as sandwich natural fibre composites. In this investigation, an effort has been made to study the mechanical properties exhibited by sandwich epoxy composite reinforced with various commonly used natural fibres, namely Aloevera, Kenaf, Sisal, Jute and Flax. The polymer resin used as matrix is also varied using Epoxy LY556 and Epoxy GY250. The originality of this work is in the use of Epoxy GY250 to fabricate sandwich composites with five commonly available natural fibres and compare its performance to the more widely used Epoxy LY556. It has been determined through various mechanical tests, which particular epoxy resin bonds better with the natural fibres namely, jute, sisal, aloe vera, kenaf and flax thereby providing better tensile, impact and flexural properties. The investigation is hoped to provide an insight into how the environmentally friendly natural fibres interact with the varying matrix resins and how this interaction affects the mechanical properties of said composites.

Abstract Composite materials are being used in many industrial applications such as automobile, aerospace, marine, oil and gas industries due to their high strength to weight ratio. The long-term effect of sustained loads and environmental factors that include exposure to UV light, temperature, and moisture have been under investigation by many researchers. The major objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of harsh environment (e.g. seawater and high temperature) on the structural properties of E-glass epoxy composite materials. These effects were studied in terms of seawater absorption, permeation of salt and contaminants, chemical and physical bonds at the interface and degradation in mechanical properties. Samples were immersed in seawater at room temperature (23°C), 65°C and 90°C for the duration of 6 months. Results show that seawater absorption increased with immersion time at 23°C and 65°C, whereas the weight of the specimens decreased at 90°C. The moisture causes swelling at 23°C and 65°C and breakdown of chemical bonds between fiber and matrix at 90°C. It is observed that high temperature accelerates the degradation of the E-glass epoxy composite. At 90°C, the tensile strength of E-glass epoxy sharply decreased by 72.92% but no significant change was observed in modulus of elasticity of the composite.

Composite materials have made way to various fields, including aerospace structures, underwater vehicles, automobiles and robot systems. Due to the high strength to weight ratio of composites, they serve as a suitable alternative to metals, therefore making the need for a reliable database of structural design more important. Most of the modern civilian and military aircraft use composite materials for their primary structural components (in addition to metals). One of the key areas in composite structural design involves the tensile strength of joints. In the present work, the lap joints fabricated from different orientations of GFRP (Glass fiber reinforced polymer) specimens are subjected to tensile test. The effect of fibre orientation on the tensile strength of lap joint is investigated both experimentally and computationally using conventional software package. The experimental results are compared with FEA using conventional software package ANSYS.

Bio-fibre composites are increasingly replacing conventional and synthetic composite materials for the past two decades. This is due to their abundant availability, high strength to weight ratio and bio-degradability. Suitable properties of natural fibres can be imparted by changing the orientation of the fibres during manufacturing process. This paper proposes a hybrid property of natural fibre composite made up of Manila and abaca fibres as reinforcing agents with epoxy resin as matrix .Hand lay-up process is used for manufacturing this composite laminate. Then the treated fibres with increased strength are used with epoxy LY556 resin with HY951 hardener under room temperature. Three different samples are prepared and their mechanical properties like impact and flexural strength are found. This hybrid composite is effectively developed for automobile and electrical applications.

Due to the light weight, high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance and other advantages, natural fibre based composites are becoming important composite materials in mechanical engineering fields. The current project emphasizes the newly identified Pandanus Fibre (Pandanus Fascicularis) which is extracted from the stem of screw pine tree by the manual water treatment process. The mechanical properties of chopped Pandanus fibre by Polyester composites are investigated and compared with the similar natural fibres in the fibre reinforced composite material field. The composite plates were fabricated with raw pandanus fibres by compression moulding method with varying weight percentage and lengths of fibre.

The increasing demand for newer materials with versatile properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio; has made fiber reinforced composite materials a favourable choice in various applications, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, marine, sports and defense industries. Moreover, the properties of a composite material could be tailored for specific functions or applications. Despite its many attractive features, composite material fails in a complex manner involving matrix failure, fiber failure and delamination. This failure behaviour needs to be well established. The objective of this study is to perform failure analysis on a woven Kevlar/Epoxy composite laminate subjected to uniaxial tension and establish its failure trend. The lamination sequence is (θ4/04/-θ4)S where the angle, θ, ranges from 0o to 90o. The failure analysis was carried out using a commercial finite element software, Ansys and comparisons were made using analytical methods (Matlab). The values of stresses were computed and Maximum Stress Theory was employed to check for failure. The trend of failure, in terms of the failure curves (normalized first ply failure and last ply failure loads), for woven Kevlar/Epoxy was established. This study had produced new failure datas for woven Kevlar/Epoxy and thus, contributes significant knowledge about the failure behaviour of composite materials.

Fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) are being used extensively in the rehabilitation and retrofitting of existing structures  as an external reinforcement because of their properties like high strength to weight and stiffness to weight  ratios, corrosion resistance, light weight and high durability. They are especially used in the reinforced concrete structure like bridges, chimney, high rise building etc. At present FRP reinforcements are available in the form of reinforcing bars and are used in the structures in place of steel, mainly the structures are constructed near the coastal areas or in the aggressive environments. The main advantage of FRP rebar is its corrosion resistance, light weight, durability and easy handing. The FRP rebars are being used worldwide for many structures including bridge structures as well, but not well explored because of its availability. The main objective of this thesis work is to assess the static load behaviour of RC T-beams reinforced internally with GFRP reinforcements using finite element analysis software ANSYS. Totally twelve numbers of specimens were considered in this study with varying parameters such as type of reinforcements, reinforcements ratio and concrete grade. Modelling of the T- beams were done with ANSYS using solid 65 and link 8 element and the same were analyzed under static loading conditions. The results obtained from the ANSYS were compared with the theoretical and experimental analysis. Based on the comparison suitable conclusions and recommendations are made in this research work.

Abstract: In Recent days, the natural fibres from renewable natural resources offer the potential to act as a reinforcing material for polymer composites alternative to the use of glass, carbon and other man-made fibres. Among various fibres, Hemp is most widely used natural fibre due to its advantages like easy availability, low density, low production cost and satisfactory mechanical properties. Composite materials play a vital role in the field of materials to meet the stringent demands of light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance and near-net shapes. Composite is a structural material that consists of two or more combined constituents that are combined at a macroscopic level and are not soluble in each other. Composites are having two phases that are reinforcing phase like fiber, particle, or flakes & matrix phase like polymers, metals, and ceramics. In this project an attempt is made to prepare different combination of composite materials using hemp/carbon fiber and Carbon nano tube reinforcement and vinyl ester as the matrix material respectively. Composites were prepared according to ASTM standards and following test are carried out Tensile, Flexural and ILSS test. The effect of addition of Carbon nano tubes in hemp/vinyl ester/carbon fibers has been studied & it has been observed that there is a significant effect of fibre loading and performance of hemp/carbon fiber reinforced vinyl ester based hybrid composites with improved results Keywords: Hemp fiber, Vinyl ester, Carbon fiber, Tensile, Flexural and ILSS Test
