Background: Most recent cancer registry data suggests a change in cancer occurrence in Uganda with a decrease in incidence of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) but an increase in cervical, prostate and breast cancer. Anecdotal data suggest that KS, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and breast cancer were the most common cancers among patients at Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) by 2006. Aim: To describe the spectrum of cancer diagnoses among new patients that presented for care at UCI over the past 2-years. Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study of patients admitted into care at UCI with a histologic or clinical diagnosis of cancer from January 2015 to December 2016. Cancer diagnoses were reported as proportions by gender and age - children (0-14 years) and adults (above 14 years). Results: Overall, 8279 new patients were registered during the study period but only 7588 (92%) were recorded in the electronic database and had information on cancer diagnosis. Of these, 53% were admitted in 2015, and 55% were females. Median age was 48 years (IQR: 34-62). Among 2997 female adults, 30% had cervical, 17% breast, 5% Kaposi sarcoma (KS), 4% leukemia and 3.9% esophageal cancer. Among 2136 male adults, 17% had KS, 12% prostate, 10% esophageal, 6% leukemia and 4% colorectal cancer. Among the 486 children, 17% had leukemia, 16.7% nephroblastoma (Wilms tumor), 15.9% Burkitt lymphoma (BL), 8% rhabdomyosarcoma, and 6% Kaposi sarcoma. Conclusion: The distribution of cancer diagnoses among patients seen at UCI reflects the population level cancer incidence with cervical, breast, KS, prostate, esophageal, and colorectal cancer in adults, and nephroblastoma in children as the leading cause of cancer related morbidity. The overrepresentation of leukemia may be due to referral bias but warrants further study. The correlation of our findings with incidence data suggests that missing information did not significantly skew our findings. However more investments are needed to improve the quality of data captured electronically.

AbstractObjectiveA 5-year nationwide mass media campaign aimed at prevention of overweight was organised from 2002 onwards. The present study evaluates the first campaign, which was aimed primarily at increasing awareness of weight gain.Design and subjectsData were collected by telephone interview in four independent cross-sectional surveys among non-obese Dutch adults aged 25–35 years (total n = 1949) for statistical analyses. Awareness of personal body-weight status, overweight-related risk perceptions, attitudes towards weight-gain prevention, motivation to prevent weight gain and self-reported body mass index (BMI) were measured in each survey. Campaign exposure was assessed in the post-intervention surveys. To identify intervention effects over time multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were used, adjusted for secular time effects and age.ResultsAfter the campaign about 65% of the respondents knew about the campaign. The campaign was associated with more positive attitudes towards the prevention of weight gain (β = 0.16; P ≤ 0.01) and higher self-reported BMI (β = 0.14; P ≤ 0.01).ConclusionsThe results suggest that the first campaign reached a large proportion of the population and initiated some positive change in attitudes, but did not achieve significant improvements in other determinants of weight-gain prevention among non-obese young adults.

AbstractObjectiveTo determine whether frequent vitamin C supplement use is associated with healthier behaviours, and a history of cancer and other illnesses in UK women.DesignThe present cross-sectional analysis examines the odds of taking supplements containing vitamin C as recorded in 4 d food diaries, based on lifestyle characteristics and morbidity history self-reported by questionnaire.SettingA large national UK cohort study.SubjectsA total of 12 453 women aged between 37 and 79 years.ResultsWomen frequently taking supplements containing vitamin C, compared to those who did not, had healthier behaviours, including higher consumption of fruit and vegetables. Frequent high-dose vitamin C users (≥1000 mg) had a higher socio-economic status, visited alternative practitioners more often than family or private doctors, and were more likely to be ex-smokers and to drink little or no alcohol. Women who self-reported having had cancer (OR = 1·33, 95 % CI 1·00, 1·76) or specifically breast cancer (OR = 1·70, 95 % CI 1·14, 2·55), or reported a family history of cancer (OR = 1·16, 95 % CI 0·95, 1·41) or breast cancer (OR = 1·26, 95 % CI 1·01, 1·58) had increased odds of being frequent high-dose users after adjusting for sociodemographic and health behaviours. Women with personal or family histories of some cardiovascular or intestinal disorders were more likely to take supplements containing vitamin C, though not necessarily at high doses.ConclusionsHigh-dose vitamin C intake by UK women was associated with healthier behaviours and a history of breast cancer, total cancer and other illnesses. Consequences of high-dose vitamin C supplement intake are not clear at the population level.

Breast cancer is one of the most common illness that killed woman. One of the therapy to cure breast cancer is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has side effect either physical and psychology, that caused people who’s in chemo therapy, prone to stress. Stress effected by many factors, such as characteristic and chopping strategy that patient has been using. The aim of this research is to get a perspective about the relation of characteristic and chopping strategy with breast cancer patient stress, whose in chemo therapy. This research using cross sectional study and taking sample by using accidental sampling method. The data analyzed by using bavariat and multivariat with variable result shows that breast cancer patient stress who has chemo therapy realted to age characteristic (p value = 0.00) the time since they diagnosed with cancer (pvalue = 0.03), how long they have chemo therapy (pvalue = 0.00) and chopping strategyby looking social support (pvalue = 0.00) looking for spiritual (pvalue = 0.00) with dominan variable which related to stress is chopping strategy to looking spiritual support (coeffecients B = -1.139).   Key words : Breast cancer, chemotherapy, stress

ABSTRACT Breast cancer on the mark with the growth or uncontrolled growth of cells that are excessive. Factors affecting the incidence of breast cancer include maternal age, marital status, family history, hormone use, radiation, manarche, and obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between Age and Marital Status of Mother with Breast Cancer incidence in the Installation Surgeon General Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2012. The study design was analytical descriptive with the approach in which the independent variables Cross Sectional Age Mother and Status Perkawianan and dependent variables in breast cancer incidence collected at the same time. The study population was all women who develop breast cancer in the Installation General Hospital Surgery Center Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2012 and samples taken by systematic random sampling with a sample of 130 respondents. The results of univariate analysis of data showed that respondents had breast cancer with a percentage of total 58 (44.61%) while respondents who had not had breast cancer totaled 72 by the percentage (63.39%). Respondents by Age Mothers who are at risk amounted to 34 by the percentage (26.15%) while respondents with Age Mothers who are not at risk amounted to 96 by the percentage (73.85%). Respondents by Marital Status is married and the mother who totaled 69 by the percentage (53.07%) and Marital Status with the status of unmarried women totaled 61 by the percentage (46.03%). Of Chi-Square test results found no significant relationship between Age Mothers with Breast Cancer event in which the p value = 0.007, no significant relationship between Marital Status in Breast Cancer event in which the p value = 0.030. Based on the results of the study, researchers suggest counseling efforts, medical knowledge and improve the quality of health services in order to reduce the incidence of breast cancer..   ABSTRAK Kanker payudara di tandai dengan pertumbuhan atau perkembangan tidak terkontrol dari sel-sel yang berlebihan. Faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kejadian kanker payudara antara lain umur ibu, status perkawinan, riwayat keluarga, penggunaan hormon, radiasi, manarche, dan obesitas. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan antara Umur Ibu dan Status Perkawinan dengan kejadian Kanker Payudara di Instalasi Bedah Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Tahun 2012. Desain Penelitian ini adalah deskriptif analitik dengan pendekatan Cross Sectional dimana variabel independen Umur Ibu dan Status Perkawianan dan variabel dependen kejadian kanker payudara dikumpulkan dalam waktu yang bersamaan. Populasi penelitian ini adalah semua ibu yang menderita kanker payudara di Instalasi Bedah Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Tahun 2012 dan sampel di ambil secara systematic random sampling dengan jumlah sampel 130 responden. Hasil analisis univariat data menunjukan responden yang mengalami Kanker Payudara berjumlah 58 dengan persentase sebesar (44,61%) sedangkan responden yang tidak mengalami Kanker Payudara berjumlah 72 dengan persentase (63,39%). Dari hasil uji Chi-Square didapatkan ada hubungan bermakna antara Umur Ibu dengan kejadian Kanker Payudara dimana p Value = 0,007, ada hubungan bermakna antara Status Perkawinan dengan kejadian Kanker Payudara dimana p Value = 0,030. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menyarankan upaya-upaya penyuluhan, pengetahuan tenaga medis dan meningkatkan mutu pelayanan kesehatan guna menurunkan angka kejadian kanker payudara.

Background: Tamoxifen (TAM) is a frequently used hormonal prodrug for patients with breast cancer that needs to be activated by cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) into Zusammen-endoxifen (Z-END). Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the association between CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) genotype and attainment of the plasma steady-state Z-END minimal threshold concentration (MTC) in Indonesian women with breast cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 125 ambulatory patients with breast cancer consuming TAM at 20 mg/day for at least 4 months. The frequency distribution of CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) genotypes (C/C: wild type; C/T: heterozygous mutant; T/T: homozygous mutant) was detected using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), the results of which were subsequently confirmed by sequencing. The genotypes were categorized into plasma Z- END concentrations of <5.9 ng/mL and ≥5.9 ng/mL, which were measured using ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Results: Percentages of C/C, CT, and T/T genotypes were 22.4%, 29.6%, and 48.8%, respectively. Median (25-75%) Z-END concentrations in C/C, C/T, and T/T genotypes were 9.58 (0.7-6.0), 9.86 (0.7-26.6), and 3.76 (0.9-26.6) ng/mL, respectively. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in median Z-END concentration between patients with T/T genotype and those with C/C or C/T genotypes (p<0.001). There was a significant association between CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) genotypes and attainment of plasma steady-state Z-END MTC (p<0.001). Conclusion: There was a significant association between CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) and attainment of plasma steady-state Z-END MTC in Indonesian breast cancer patients receiving TAM at a dose of 20 mg/day.
