AbstractWe applied niche overlap indices to for the first time show possible correlational occurrences among 40 non-marine ostracod taxa from seven aquatic habitats (lakes, creeks, ponds, springs, ditches, pools, troughs) in Turkey. Ecological tolerance and optimum estimates of each species were calculated and compared to explain possible reasons for habitat utilization. Eleven species were found suitable for the application of these indices. Overlap ranges of five of the species were found suitable for five variables (pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, electrical conductivity, and elevation; P < 0.05). Heterocypris incongruens (Ramdohr, 1808) and H. salina (Brady, 1868) were the only two species with common overlap for all the five variables. These two species generally showed common resource-utilization curves for each of these variables along with relatively similar tolerance ranges. Complete overlap was only possible for some cosmoecious species when they displayed wide-tolerance ranges and low optimum estimates for different environmental variables. Results suggest that cosmopolitan species do not only have wide geographical distributions but tolerance ranges higher than other species. Such wide tolerance ranges seem to help species coinhabit with each other and elevate their co-occurrence probabilities in different types of habitats. Applying the first usage of overlap indices on ostracods and attempting to show the relationship between niche overlap and species ecological tolerance could nevertheless provide a new tool to apply in future studies.

Discussions of the relationship between humanity and built environment usually focus on the human’s relationships with the earth’s surface. Less attention has been given to underwater environments, a relatively underexplored research area at the intersection of user experience design and psychology. This paper shows the initial findings of experiments on divers, which can guide the design of augmented reality tools for underwater environment. The comparative evaluation process demonstrates an increase in psychological restorativeness of users in relation to ambiance design, indicating a difference between a specifically designed environment and a naturally vacant area for first time divers. Future studies will explore immersive design of underwater ambiance through augmented reality tools, proposed as a product design and framework, in order to improve psychological restorativeness.

Abstract: Earthworms are often related to fertile soils and are also frequently used as environmental quality indicators. However, to optimize their use as bioindicators, earthworm populations must be evaluated together with the environmental and anthropogenic variables regulating their communities. This review sought to identify the earthworm-sampling, soil chemical and physical, and environmental and anthropogenic attributes evaluated in 124 published studies that quantified earthworm abundance (>7,300 samples) in 765 sites with different types of climate, soils, land use, and management systems in Brazil. Soil chemical and physical attributes (except pH) were less reported (≤50% of studies) than other environmental variables such as sampling date, altitude, temperature, precipitation, climate and soil type, and land use (>50% of studies). Earthworms were rarely identified (24%) and few studies (31%) measured their biomass, although most provided adequate information on sampling protocol. Based on their importance in regulating earthworm populations, a set of variables is proposed to be evaluated when studying earthworm communities and other macrofauna groups. This should help guide future studies on earthworms in Brazil and other countries, optimize data collection and replicability, allow comparisons between different studies, and promote the use of earthworms as soil quality bioindicators.

Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean, constitutes a biodiversity hotspot with high rates of plant endemism. The wild bees of the island were studied extensively by the native George Mavromoustakis, a world-renowned bee taxonomist, who collected extensively on the island from 1916 to 1957 and summarised his results in a series of eight Cyprus-specific papers published from 1949 [“1948”] to 1957. The current work represents the first modern checklist of the wild bees of Cyprus, based on a compilation of previous publications, museum specimens and authors’ recent collections. Overall, 369 verified wild bee species have been recorded on the island, with eleven species reported from Cyprus for the first time. The island hosts all six of the globally widespread bee families, with Apidae represented by 110 species, Megachilidae with 91, Andrenidae with 76, Halictidae with 72, Colletidae with 19, and Melittidae with 1. Twenty-one of the recorded bee species are endemic (i.e., 5.7 % endemism rate) and Cyprus ranks third after Lesvos and Sicily in known bee species richness among the Mediterranean islands. Previously unpublished records from various locations on Cyprus for 156 previously reported bee species are also provided in the study. The current work provides a baseline for future studies of wild bee diversity on the island of Cyprus and neighbouring regions.

Abstract Increasing evidence suggested that benzene exposure resulted in different types of hematological cancer. Both autophagy and apoptosis were reported to play vital roles in benzene toxicity, but the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis remain unclear in benzene-induced hematotoxicity. In this study, the toxic effect of benzene on autophagy and apoptosis in benzene-exposed workers and in vitro were verified. Results showed that benzene metabolite (1, 4-benzoquinone, 1, 4-BQ) dose-dependently induced autophagy and apoptosis via enhancing phosphorylation of Bcl-2 and beclin1. Finally, we also found that the elevated ROS was in line with enhancing the phosphorylation of Bcl-2 and beclin1 which contributed to 1, 4-BQ-induced autophagy and apoptosis. Taken together, this study for the first time found that the effect of 1, 4-BQ on the crosstalk between autophagy and apoptosis were modulated by the ROS generation via enhancing phosphorylation of Bcl-2(Ser70) and phosphorylation of beclin1(Thr119), which offered a novel insight into underlying molecular mechanisms of benzene-induced hematotoxicity, and specifically how the crosstalk between autophagy and apoptosis was involved in benzene toxicity. This work provided novel evidence for the toxic effects and risk assessment of benzene.

AbstractFungal spores, especially those of coprophilous fungi, are present in dung middens ofRhinoceros unicornis(greater one-horned rhinoceros) in both forest and grassland areas of the Kaziranga National Park, India. The presence of coprophilous fungi on rhino dung, chieflySporormiella,Saccobolus,Ascodesmis,Cercophora, andSordaria, is documented for the first time. TheSporormiella–Ascodesmis–Saccobolusassemblage is abundant and characterizes the rhino dung in forest and grassland areas. The presence of coprophilous fungi spores allows for an examination of the relationship between rhinoceros ecology and the flora and other fauna in the region. The overall dataset is useful in interpreting the present and past distribution of rhino and other associated animals based on the relative abundance of different types of coprophilous fungi spores and their relationship to paleoherbivory and paleoecology in India and adjoining areas.

This narrative review of the literature assessed whether regular physical exercise and sleep patterns, fasting and autophagy, altogether can be an adequate strategy for achieving healthy longevity and well-being within different stage of life. There are a large number of studies dealing with well-being and healthy longevity; however, few of them have given us a specific formula for how to live long and healthy. Despite all the advances that have been made to create adequate physical exercise programs, sleep patterns or nutritional protocols, the relation between different types of fasting, nutritional supplementation as well as regular physical exercise and sleep patterns have not yet been satisfactorily resolved to cause the best effects of autophagy and, therefore, well-being and healthy longevity. In this way, future studies should clarify more efficiently the relationship between these variables to understand the association between regular physical exercise, sleep patterns, fasting and autophagy for healthy longevity and well-being.

This note examines the relationship between affirmative action (AA) program perceptions and women’s self-ascribed capacity and desire to become leaders. We propose that women who believe that their organization implements a program of preferential selection toward women will experience negative psychological effects leading to lowered self-expectations for leadership, but that this effect will be moderated by their justice perceptions of AA programs. We test this proposition empirically for the first time with a Latin American female sample. Among Brazilian women managers, desire but not self-ascribed capacity to lead was reduced when they believed an AA policy was in place. Both desire’s and capacity’s relationships with belief in an AA policy were moderated by justice perceptions.

For the first time in the world, a bison population has been created in an area of 60 degrees north latitude. In the new climatic conditions of breeding and preservation of bison, the factors of the species existence in the north of the European part of the Russian Federation are identified and analyzed. The signs, dynamics of abundance, which are an integral part of the system designed to manage biodiversity are identified, since the preservation of biological diversity on the planet is one of the main problems of our time. Introduction, being the process of introducing non-typical species into an ecosystem, can enhance changes in biocenoses, both positively and negatively. The question posing sounds especially when it comes to such a large hoofed animal as the European bison. How quickly and successfully the process of adaptation of the universe takes place and its environmental impact is seen depends on the continued existence of bison and biodiversity in general. The article discusses the relationship of bison with other types of ungulates and human activities, as well as the further use of bison in agricultural production. How these issues will be resolved positively depends on the future of these animals. Thus, the plasticity of bison, the identification of changes and their analysis, with the introduction of species into new habitat conditions is necessary not only to determine the development or degradation of biocenoses and the ecosystem as a whole, but also to predict the socio-economic consequences due to the introduction as one of the methods of preserving rare and endangered species of fauna.

The article analyzes the problem of the relationship between the philosophy of law and the scientific theory of law. The problem under consideration has become especially urgent in the Russian educational space in connection with the introduction of the Philosophy of Law discipline master's degree in law after a long break. The author of the article takes as the basis the thesis that the philosophy of law, being the sphere of philosophical thought, and the theory of law as a field of scientific socio-humanitarian knowledge are different types of theoretical discourse. Based on this, the article builds a theoretical concept according to which the task of the philosophy of law as a philosophical type of thinking is the construction or explication of ontological, epistemological, axiological, phenomenological grounds for the formation and functioning of concrete scientific theoretical and legal and historical and legal constructions. To implement the task posed in the article, the key characteristics of both a theory of a philosophical type and ideals, norms and characteristics of scientific knowledge are examined in detail. The revealed difference is extrapolated to the relationship between the theory of law as a product of scientific creativity and the philosophy of law as a construction that sets basic philosophical meanings. As an example of the foundations of the scientific theories of progress, state, morality and law developed by the philosophy of law and the state, the author gives the views and thinkers of the West European philosophical classics T. Hobbes, J.-J. Russo, I. Kant, G.V.F. Hegel. It was their philosophical concepts that predetermined the images of theoretical and historical-legal doctrines of the XVIII, XIX, XX and even the beginning of the XXI centuries. Thus, the attitude of the philosophy of law and the theory of law is built along the «vertical»: from the ontological foundation to the construction of theoretical and historical and historical legal scientific constructions.
