In a society dominated by the use of technology as a primary method of communication and education, it should come as no surprise that medical professionals rely heavily on its use as well. The new dominance of smartphones over cell phones and pagers in medicine is largely influenced by convenience and efficiency, and over 70% of healthcare professionals have reported using a mobile device in their workplaces. This chapter aims to highlight the transition to mobile devices in the medical realm and the benefits for both clinicians and patients. For clinicians, mobile devices and apps may serve as diagnostic aids, med calculators, and clinical references. They can also be used for medical education purposes and access of electronic medical records. For patients, mobile devices and apps are often utilized to find resources and information about diseases, to help with disease management, and to promote lifestyle modification and fitness. Nevertheless, despite the numerous benefits of mobile devices in practice, potential risks and drawbacks must also be considered.

The impact of technology can be felt throughout the medical education continuum. From online learning environments in blended learning approaches to exclusively providing the preclinical curriculum online, there is a growing need to optimize the way that technology supports self-directed learning in the next generation of medical professionals. In this chapter, the authors address issues of best practice surrounding the development of virtual content for medical education. The information presented will be integral for medical education professionals, basic science/clinical faculty, and educational assessment specialists with an interest in the use of technology for contemporary medical education. The goal is to offer an overview of the theory and ethics behind adopting an online strategy for medical education. An emphasis is placed on developing best practices for presenting content, a comparison of blended and online-only approaches, and the ethical considerations necessary for the successful training of medical professionals online.

A case study of the process of foreign intervention in medical education in the developing world is presented. Material collected from the Rockefeller Foundation Archives on a Foundation program in Thailand is used to analyze the conditions under which foreign agencies and their personnel intervene in the development of medical professionals in the Third World and to study the problems that may occur as a result of such intervention. The importance of value consensus and the competitive advantage foreigners have in the marketing of professional models are highlighted as reasons for the diffusion of Western models of medical education throughout the developing world.

Abstract Background The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) has acknowledged the importance of pregnancy options counseling by listing it as a “shows how” skill for all undergraduate medical students. Unfortunately, there is no standard curriculum utilized to teach medical students pregnancy options counseling or to assess skill sustainability over time. Objectives To review and summarize the literature on pregnancy options counseling in undergraduate medical education. Methods We performed a structured literature review searching Google Scholar, PubMed, and EMBASE for articles between 2000 and February 2020. Inclusion criteria were English language studies of M. D. and D.O. programs in North America with a discussion of pregnancy options counseling as it relates to medical student education. Results There is a small but growing body of literature on pregnancy options counseling in medical student education. The common themes across the 17 papers reviewed include the status of pregnancy options counseling in undergraduate medical education, barriers to teaching options counseling, the timing of education, utilization of the options counseling Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), learner challenges, and novel strategies for implementing education in options counseling and subsequent learning outcomes. Conclusions There is no standardized pregnancy options counseling curriculum in undergraduate medical education (UME). The landscape in which this important skill is being taught is one of random, insufficient, and uncoordinated curricular interventions. This is the only review on this subject, making it a unique summary on pregnancy options counseling in UME.

UNSTRUCTURED Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, medical schools have paused traditional clerkships, eliminating direct patient encounters from medical students’ education for the immediate future. Telemedicine offers opportunities in a variety of specialties that can augment student education during this time. The projected growth of telemedicine necessitates that students learn new skills to be effective providers. In this viewpoint, we delineate specific telehealth opportunities that teach core competencies for patient care, while also teaching telemedicine-specific skills. Schools can further augment student education through a variety of telemedicine initiatives across multiple medical fields. The explosion of telemedicine programs due to the pandemic can be a catalyst for schools to integrate telemedicine into their current curricula. The depth and variety of telemedicine opportunities allow schools to continue providing high-quality medical education while maintaining social distancing policies.

Migration and cultural interconnection has been one of the major contributors to globalization of disease. This is often a challenge physicians face as they encounter illnesses that they have not seen before while working in dissimilar environments to their training. Given this, international experiences are trending among medical professionals to be cognizant and proficient in dealing with such situations. In this paper, we will briefly reflect on our international exchange experiences as students and how such experiences can contribute to developing stronger global health knowledge and enrich our medical education experience as future physicians. We will also discuss some of the challenges medical students face while pursuing such opportunities, and how such challenges could be overcome.

Old methods of training and medical education are coming at halt considering chances of errors, neglect and communication gaps amongst medical teams  associated with the traditional methods, leading to avoidable patient mortality. Simulation based learning is slowly replacing the old methods given its provision of safe environment to medical professionals to polish their skills and knowledge without the risk of any loss of patient lives. This article discusses the experience of simulation based learning as it is tried to being introduced at one of the hospitals of Pakistan, a resource limited nation and the challenges that has to be faced in  trying to incorporate   simulation in the education system in near future

Chapter four explores how educators might help cultivate the capacity for authentic patient care among doctors-in-training, including a comportment of humility, openness, and gratitude for patients. The argument is made that the curative ethos of medicine and its preoccupation with calculative thinking will persist until educators can cultivate within clinicians and clinicians-in-training the capacity to face their vulnerability and the reality of existential anxiety. It is through a pedagogy that values and fosters vulnerability and reflexivity that this capacity can be cultivated. Although recent trends in the professionalism movement, including that of “professional identity formation,” have made progress toward these ends, these movements actually may serve to reinforce calculative thinking, due to their focus on outcomes and assessment. This chapter looks critically at such trends in medical education and contends that ideas concerning professionalism can be enriched and expanded through an understanding of virtue ethics and the Aristotelian concept of phronesis, which emphasize personal development, experiential and habitual learning, and quality mentorship.

Целью данной статьи являлось ознакомить кардиологическое сообщество страны с результатами работы ESC Education Conference (2020), которая была посвящена обсуждению проблем и возможности интеграции участия пациентов в совместном ведении их с врачами. ESC создан специальный форум по вовлечению уже пролеченных «старых» пациентов в программу совместного ведения «новых» пациентов, а также привлечению их в программы образования и науки. Конференция подтвердила единодушие участников в том, что интеграция пациентов в разработку их диагностических и лечебных планов требует выделения большего количества времени для обучения пациентов во время каждой встречи, а также сделала акцент о необходимости введения в учебные программы разделов по обучению медицинских работников совместному ведению. Вывод: Таким образом, концепция тесного сотрудничества пациентов и медицинских работников предоставляет огромную возможность для развития программы совместного ведения больных в области медицинского образования. The aim of article was to familiarize the cardiology community of the country with the results of the ESC Education Conference (2020), which was devoted to discussing the problems and the possibility of integrating patient participation in joint management with doctors. ESC created a special forum for the involvement of already treated "old" patients in the program of shared care of "new" patients, as well as their involvement in education and science programs. The Conference confirmed the consensus of the participants that the patients integration in the development of their diagnostic and treatment plans requires more time to train patients during each meeting, and also emphasized the need to introduce sections on training programs of medical professionals in the field of enabling shared care. Conclusion: Thus, the concept of close cooperation between patients and medical professionals provides a huge opportunity for the development of an enabling shared care in medical education.

The internet is increasingly used to propagate medical education, debate, and even disinformation. Therefore, this primer aims to help acute care medical professionals, as well as the public. This is because we all need to be able to critically appraise digital products, appraise content producers, and reflect upon our own on-line presence. This article discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with online medical resources. We then review Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) and the key tools used to assess the trustworthiness of on-line medical products. Specifically, after discussing the pros and cons of traditional academic quality metrics, we compare and contrast the Social Media Index, the ALiEM AIR score, the Revised METRIQ Score, and gestalt. We also discuss internet search engines, peer review, and the important message behind the seemingly tongue-in-cheek Kardashian Index. Hopefully, this primer bolsters basic digital literacy and helps trainees, practitioners, and the public locate useful and reliable on-line resources. Importantly, we highlight the continued importance of traditional academic medicine and primary source publications.
