This chapter starts with a review of the definitions, meanings, and uses of the concept of empathy in the domains of ethnomusicology, interpersonal relationships, aesthetics, and embodied musical cognition. The following five issues are then addressed: (1) How does the notion of empathy impact the classic theories of musical emotion? (2) It is possible to define different types of musical empathy, depending on the nature of its referent? (3) Do different performance contexts foster different types of musical empathy? (4) What light do theories of empathy shed on the process of association between persons and tunes? (5) Is there any connection between an empathic disposition and the musical form of de jale (“sorrowful”) tunes?

Interpersonal relationships and communication are always developed in a specific cultural context that has its own values, norms, and even institutions to cope with different types and levels of interpersonal relationships (Mamali, 1996, p. 217). Since the dawn of mankind, what separates man from beast is man’s ability to use and develop tools and technology. The use of technology has become so prevalent that it permeates all aspects of our lives, schools, business, and our personal lives. Businesses especially have to broaden and improve their technological skills in order to survive in technology-dependant environments.

AbstractIntroduction:The purpose of the study was to document the occurrence and causes of disagreements between paramedics in a tiered-response emergency medical services (EMS) system.Methods:This cohort analysis of disagreements between paramedics sampled 63 male public agency, 90 male private agency, and 41 female private agency paramedics. Paramedics responded to Likert-type items and one open-ended item concerning the occurrence of conflict between paramedics.Results:On-scene conflict between EMS personnel from public and private agencies was reported by 70% of the respondents. Conflicts that interfered with patient care were reported to occur more frequently between paramedics from different types of agencies. The most commonly mentioned subject of disagreement was patient treatment, followed by patient transport, interpersonal and interagency conflicts, and patient assessment.Conclusion:A majority of paramedics have experienced on-scene disagreements with other paramedics. Disagreements occur more frequently between paramedics from different agencies and encompass a wide range of issues concerning patient care and interpersonal relationships.

Abstract Background Reducing stigma is a perennial target of mental health advocates, but effectively addressing stigma relies on the ability to correctly understand and accurately measure culture-specific and location-specific components of stigma and discrimination. Methods We developed two culture-sensitive measures that assess the core components of stigma. The 40-item Interpersonal Distance Scale (IDS) asks respondents about their willingness to establish four different types of relationships with individuals with 10 target conditions, including five mental health-related conditions and five comparison conditions. The 40-item Occupational Restrictiveness Scale (ORS) asks respondents how suitable it is for individuals with the 10 conditions to assume four different types of occupations. The scales – which take 15 min to complete – were administered as part of a 2013 survey in Ningxia Province, China to a representative sample of 2425 adult community members. Results IDS and ORS differentiated the level of stigma between the 10 conditions. Of the total, 81% of respondents were unwilling to have interpersonal relationships with individuals with mental health-related conditions and 91% considered them unsuitable for various occupations. Substantial differences in attitudes about the five mental health-related conditions suggest that there is no community consensus about what constitutes a ‘mental illness’. Conclusions Selection of comparison conditions, types of social relationships, and types of occupations considered by the IDS and ORS make it possible to develop culture-sensitive and cohort-specific measures of interpersonal distance and occupational restrictiveness that can be used to compare the level and type of stigma associated with different conditions and to monitor changes in stigma over time.

Межличностные отношения являются необходимым условием, определяющим развитие не только отдельных психических процессов, но и личности в целом. Имеется ряд работ, в которых показана деформация межличностных отношений у подростков с разным видом дизонтогенеза, в том числе и при умственной отсталости. Представлены результаты изучения межличностных отношений подростков, имеющих умственную отсталость, осложненную нарушением зрения. Результаты проведенного исследования позволили констатировать наличие как общих, так и специфических особенностей межличностных отношений у подростков с умственной отсталостью, осложненной нарушением зрения, и у их сверстников с неосложненной умственной отсталостью. В обследуемых группах только треть подростков рассматривают отца и мать как родительскую чету, при этом наблюдается высокая значимость взаимоотношений с матерью и отказ от общения с отцом. Для подростков обеих групп характерны: слабая включенность во взаимодействие со сверстниками; наличие чувственно дефицитного или чувственно чрезмерного типа взаимодействия с преобладанием чувственно дефицитного типа; нерешительность в принятии решений, стремление переложить ответственность на других; отсутствие тенденции к доминированию; частые конфликты со сверстниками и неспособность их конструктивно разрешить. Кроме того, подростки обследуемых групп часто демонстрируют реакции на фрустрацию активно-агрессивного или пассивно-страдательного типа, причем у подростков с неосложненной умственной отсталостью доминируют реакции активно-агрессивного типа, а у подростков с умственной отсталостью, осложненной нарушением зрения, – реакции пассивно-страдательного типа. Примечательно, что подростки с умственной отсталостью, осложненной нарушением зрения, склонны к изоляции от сверстников, проявляют бóльшую привязанность к дому и своей семье. Interpersonal relations are a prerequisite that determines the development of not only individual mental processes, but also the personality as a whole. There are a number of works that show the deformation of interpersonal relationships in adolescents with different types of dysontogenesis, including with mental retardation. This article presents the results of a study of the interpersonal relationships of adolescents with mental retardation complicated by visual impairment. The results of the study made it possible to ascertain the presence of both general and specific features of interpersonal relationships in adolescents with mental retardation complicated by visual impairment, and their peers with uncomplicated mental retardation. In the examined groups, only a third of adolescents consider the father and mother as a parental couple, while there is a high significance of the relationship with the mother and refusal to communicate with the father. For adolescents of both groups are characteristic: weak involvement in interaction with peers; the presence of a sensually deficient or sensually excessive type of interaction with a predominance of the sensually deficient type; indecision in decision making, the desire to shift responsibility to others; lack of a tendency to domination; frequent conflicts with peers and the inability to constructively resolve them. In addition, adolescents of the studied groups often show reactions to frustration of the activeaggressive or passive-suffering type, and in adolescents with uncomplicated mental retardation, the reactions of the active-aggressive type dominate, and in adolescents with mental retardation complicated by visual impairment, the reactions of passive-passive type. It is noteworthy that adolescents with mental retardation, complicated by visual impairment, are prone to isolation from their peers, show greater attachment to home and their family.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been shown to have a variety of negative health and mental health effects on those who are afflicted, as well as negative effects on relationships with intimate partners and close relatives. Families are likely to be impacted by the specific nature of the sustained trauma. For example, PTSD related to sexual trauma may be experienced solely by the victim, who is likely to be uniquely impacted by and “impactful” to intimate partners, close family, and friends in the victim’s life. In contrast, PTSD resulting from exposure to natural disasters or terrorism may affect numerous members of a family, particularly when multiple family members have been exposed to the same event or when homes, possessions, or neighborhoods have been broadly affected. Although specific circumstances may require tailored approaches to family intervention, different types of traumas also share commonalities related to their impact on interpersonal relationships, communication, and family functioning. Little is known about effective interventions for families affected by PTSD, regardless of circumstances.

Although most individuals who gamble do so without any adverse consequences, some individuals develop a recurrent, maladaptive pattern of gambling behaviour, often called pathological gambling or gambling disorder, that is associated with financial losses, disruption of family and interpersonal relationships, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Identifying whether different types of gambling modalities vary in their ability to lead to maladaptive patterns of gambling behaviour is essential to develop public policies that seek to balance access to gambling opportunities with minimizing risk for the potential adverse consequences of gambling behaviour. Until recently, assessing the risk potential of different types of gambling products was nearly impossible. ASTERIG, initially developed in Germany in 2006-2010, is an assessment tool to measure and to evaluate the risk potential of any gambling product based on scores on ten dimensions. In doing so, it also allows a comparison to be drawn between the addictive potential of different gambling products. Furthermore, the tool highlights where the specific risk potential of each specific gambling product lies. This makes it a valuable tool at the legislative, case law, and administrative levels as it allows the risk potential of individual gambling products to be identified and to be compared globally and across 10 different dimensions of risk potential. We note that specific gambling products should always be evaluated rather than product groups (lotteries, slot machines) or providers, as there may be variations among those product groups that impact their risk potential. For example, slot machines may vary on the amount of jackpot, which may influence their risk potential.

The psychologists admit the frequent infantilism of the emotional and personal sphere in children of primary school age. Presented infantilism may occur in the form of difficulties in differentiating of emotional states and understanding the causes of one’s own actions and peers actions which may lead to problems in behavior and interpersonal relationships. Section 3 of the correctional course presents tasks aimed to the development and formation of an emotional and personal sphere in children of primary school age within the framework of the cognitive approach — a verbal and nonverbal understanding of emotions and emotional expression. Phenomenological approach to the study of the emotional sphere of the child is extremely heterogeneous and inaccurate, since in the emotional sphere there are many different aspects of emotions and emotional states are singled out, and therefore their differentiation is ambiguous. Purpose This paper focuses on the relationships that consumers develop with experiential objects in the context of the Biennale of Contemporary Art Exhibition, viewed from a dialogical and intersubjective approach. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on the interpersonal relationships that visitors of the Biennale establish with contemporary artworks and to understand the characteristics of these relationships as well as their role in shaping Biennale visitors’ identity narratives. Design/methodology/approach This research employs an instrumental case study that draws on multiple data sources and examines consumers’ relationships with contemporary artworks. Findings The case study evidence introduces the relationships that emerged from Biennale visitors’ interactions with contemporary artworks and the identity narratives evolving from these relationships. The findings suggest that Biennale visitors’ relationships with the contemporary artworks take the form of I-thou and I-it relationships. These two modes of interpersonal relationships by entailing different characteristics led investigated visitors to live different types of experiences of contemporary art consumption. Research limitations/implications The first limitation of this research is that it focuses on the establishment of interpersonal relationships at the microgenetic level. Further research can provide additional insights by conducting a longitudinal case study. The second limitation is that it provides limited insights into the relationships that are revealed by consumers’ experiences with possessive objects. Future research may examine interpersonal relationships in terms of consumers’ relationships with their brands. Practical implications The understanding of visitors’ interactions and relationships with contemporary artworks provides insights into curatorial and marketing practices for such art institutions. Originality/value The findings of the current research provide new theoretical insights into the interpersonal relationships that consumers develop with experiential objects and into the distinctive identity narratives that evolve from the establishment of different types of interpersonal relationships.

Abstract In original and dubbed film dialogue, direct questions are a means to depict interpersonal relationships on screen. In particular, pragmatic questions (i.e. non-questioning, rhetorical interrogatives) are frequently employed to mark alignment among interactants, in the form of affiliative and disaffiliative interrogatives, respectively expressing positive and negative stance. Based on the exploration of the Pavia Corpus of Film Dialogue, the current study aims at investigating the ways in which affiliative and disaffiliative questions are constructed in original English filmic speech and in Italian dubbing. The two dialogue types show rather high similarity in the distribution of pragmatic questions – with a notable prevalence of disaffiliative interrogatives carrying conflict-initiating role. However, different strategies are privileged in the two languages for the linguistic construction of stance. The English source text does not rely on a single and specific pattern to signal affiliation, while it marks disaffiliation through inserts, emotionally-loaded chunks and non-canonical word order in the interrogative. Conversely, dubbed Italian frequently draws on weak connectors to express disalignment and prefers different types of syntactically marked structures in the construction of affiliation. Findings thus suggest a certain degree of autonomy for dubbed dialogue in the selection of specific linguistic markers to transfer and re-portray interpersonal relationships in the target linguaculture.
