Preaching and the Cure of Souls

Teachers, particularly philosophers, saw the purpose of their teaching to be the therapy of the soul. Similar medical language can also be found in much Christian literature throughout antiquity, and Chrysostom is no exception. It permeates both his preaching and his discussion of preaching in his treatise On the Priesthood, and will thus prove to be important for assessing how he perceives and articulates his objectives as preacher. Despite it being a commonly used metaphor in his preaching, Chrysostom’s use of medical language has only very recently begun to receive attention, particularly in recent articles by Wendy Mayer, who has depicted Chrysostom as a ‘medico-philosophical psychic therapist’, and compares his ministry to the therapy of the soul exercised by many of the Hellenistic philosophers. Chapter 4 will largely support her arguments through a closer analysis of his preaching (her own research focusing more on a selection of his treatises).

This article attempts to investigate certain problematic aspects of the institution of the victim in the Russian criminal process. For this purpose, analyzed the individual norms governing his procedural status. Separate gaps of the criminal procedure legislation in the sphere of protection of the legal rights and interests of the victim are disclosed. The author emphasizes that the improvement of the criminal procedure legislation in terms of the extension of the victim’s authority to defend his rights violated by the crime should be continued. On the basis of the study of the current legislation regarding the regulation of the rights of the victim of a crime, it is proposed to expand the list of decisions received by him, referred to in paragraph 13, part 2 of article 42 Code of Criminal Procedure. The author proposes to include in the list of the indicated legislative norm the right to receive the victim a copy of the decision on the selection of a specific type of preventive measure, selected in relation to the suspect (accused). To create an effective mechanism for protecting the interests of legal entities victims of a crime, we offer part 9 of art. 42 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation shall be reworded as follows: «if a legal entity is recognized as a victim, his procedural right in criminal proceedings is exercised by the professional lawyer representing him».

The aim of the study is to optimize the comprehensive treatment of patients with severe arterial hypertension, through the use of multicomponent rational antihypertensive pharmacotherapy, followed by the use of unloading therapeutic exercises. 32 men with severe arterial hypertension were examined. Initially, a clinical, instrumental and laboratory examination, registration of blood pressure and its 24-hour monitoring were carried out. The average daily systolic (ADBPsyst.) and average daily diastolic (ADBPdiast.) blood pressure were determined. A multicomponent rational antihypertensive pharmacotherapy, according to the clinical recommendations for the treatment of arterial hypertension was selected for all the patients. In at least 3 months after the selection of pharmacotherapy, the patients were divided into two groups, comparable in gender, age, severity of the condition, features of the disease course and medicamentous therapy. Patients of the 1st group (active treatment group) against the background of pharmacotherapy were prescribed unloading therapeutic exercises according to a patented technique. The 2nd group of patients continued to take pharmacotherapy and it was used as a baseline group. The average age in the 1st and 2nd groups was 46,3±6,8 and 43,6±7,2 years, respectively. Patients of the 1st group were prescribed unloading therapeutic exercises and in 3 months in both groups the ADBPsyst. and ADBPdiast. were compared. Initially, there was a significant increase in ADBPsyst. and ADBPdiast. compared to the normal range in both groups. These indicators in both groups differed insignificantly. In 3 months after pharmacotherapy, there was a significant decrease in ADsyst. and ADdiast. in both groups, but these indicators remained elevated and did not reach the target level. Then, in the 1st group, unloading therapeutic exercises were included in the comprehensive treatment. Patients of the 2nd group continued to receive pharmacotherapy. In 3 months after including unloading therapeutic exercises in the 1st group, there was a significant decrease in ADBP (syst. and diast.) not only in comparison with the initial data, but also with the data in 3 months after pharmacotherapy. In the 2nd group, these indicators did not change significantly compared to the three-month data. In 6 months, ADBPsyst. and ADBPdiast. in the 1st group were significantly lower compared to similar indicators in the 2nd group, which proves significant clinical effectiveness of unloading therapeutic exercises in patients of the 1st group. The results obtained confirm that patients with severe arterial hypertension have such types of disorders at the cellular-tissue and microcirculatory level that are not eliminated only by drug therapy. For their high-grade correction, along with multicomponent pharmacotherapy, it is necessary to include unloading therapeutic exercises. To optimize the treatment of severe arterial hypertension against the background of receiving multicomponent antihypertensive pharmacotherapy, it is recommended to include unloading therapeutic exercises in the therapeutic complex.

This study aims to create a database application program that is able to process data on lecturer course activities and generate reports on the calculation of teaching fees periodically during the pandemic which requires lecturers to report lecture activities online. The system design method approach used is prototyping, namely by creating a program that most closely resembles user needs in a relatively short time. The prototype was generated using the Microsoft Access 2010 database application. The selection of microsoft access to create a prototype was based on the availability of complete facilities in Microsoft Access to design table relations, input forms, query processing, reports and the visual basic programming language for applications. Google Forms used to receive lecture data input online. The application development stages consist of design, testing and implementation stages. This application has succeeded in providing the right solution for the Padang State Polytechnic Accounting Department during the pandemic in calculating and reporting lecture activities and lecturers teaching fees.

Purpose To receive a satisfactory consultancy service, a construction client must first select suitable consultants. While numerous criteria for the selection of construction consultants have been suggested in the literature, their influence on client satisfaction has hardly been statistically established. This study aimed to reduce the criteria for the selection of construction consultants into a more manageable set of fewer factors and ascertain the influence of the factors on client satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered through a purposively administered cross-sectional survey of public sector clients in Nigeria. Analyzes were done using relative importance index, factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings The results proved that the criteria for the selection of consultants can, in the order of decreasing influence on client satisfaction, be grouped into service delivery approach (SDA), relationship with the client, the caliber of personnel, firm reputation and firm certification. However, SDA is more influential on client satisfaction. All the factors were found to have significant statistical effects on clients’ overall satisfaction with consultancy services. Originality/value The study demonstrates the extent to which construction consultant selection criteria are relevant to client satisfaction. It shows that SDA is the most important predictor of clients’ satisfaction with consultancy services. The results are helpful for grouping consultant selection criteria in future studies, and in guiding clients on the weights to assign to consultant selection criteria during tender evaluation.

We evaluate an experimental program in which the French public employment service anonymized résumés for firms that were hiring. Firms were free to participate or not; participating firms were then randomly assigned to receive either anonymous résumés or name-bearing ones. We find that participating firms become less likely to interview and hire minority candidates when receiving anonymous résumés. We show how these unexpected results can be explained by the self-selection of firms into the program and by the fact that anonymization prevents the attenuation of negative signals when the candidate belongs to a minority. <p>Terceira Island is located in the Azores Archipelago and it lies at the intersection of four submarine volcanic ridges. Due to its characteristics the geothermal potential of Terceira Island has begun to receive some interest from researchers and decision makers from the 70s of last century, but only in 2000 an exploration license was granted in favour of GEOTERCEIRA (now EDA RENOVÁVEIS S.A.). The area of this license is located in the central part of the island in the Pico Alto Volcanic Complex, and includes the fumarolic field of Furnas do Enxofre.</p><p>The main aim of this study is to provide additional information about the presence of fluids upflow regions and areas of increased subsurface permeability related to high temperature hydrothermal activity at depth, as part of an study to expand the current geothermal plant of Terceira. To achieve this objective, a soil gas and diffuse CO2 and H2S degassing survey, which included in situ CO2 emission measurements and soil temperature at 15 and 40 cm deep and the collection of soil gas samples, was performed during September 2019. 122 sampling sites were selected spaced at ~100 meters at Pico Alto Volcanic Complex. Diffuse CO2 and H2S measurements were performed according to the accumulation chamber method, using a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) LICOR-830 CO2 analyser and ALPHASENSE H2S-BH detectors, respectively. In addition, soil gas samples were collected to analyse the He, H2, O2, N2, CO2, CH4 and CO contents and the isotopic composition of the CO2. Soil CO2 efflux values ranged between non-detectable values and 56.2 g m2 d-1, with an average of 21.7 g m2 d-1. Soil H2S efflux values ranged between non-detectable values and 0.245 g m2 d-1, with an average of 0.027 g m2 d-1. The probability plot technique applied to the soil CO2 efflux data allowed to distinguish three different geochemical populations: background, intermediate and peak represented by 36.9 %, 59.8 % and 3.3 % respectively, with geometric means of 10.8, 25.4 and 50.0 g m2 d-1 respectively. The spatial distribution of soil CO2 efflux data, constructed by means of Sequential Gaussian simulations algorithm, depicted the most important emission anomalies at the western section of the study area. These results can help to identify the possible existence of additional actively degassing geothermal reservoirs to reduce the uncertainty inherent to the selection of the area with the highest potential success in the selection of new exploratory wells at Terceira.</p>

The paper presents research on use of magnetostrictive cores for the recovery of energy from vibrations and its use to power low-power electronics. To achieve this goal a test stand was constructed to generate and to receive the vibrations in the measurement system at the same time. Selection of an appropriate magnetomechanical parameters of the system was an important element influencing end results. The most important were values of the prestress and magnetising field for actuators and harvesters. As a result of the investigation the device operating in a wide frequency range (up to 40 KHz) and a system for energy transportation through mechanical vibrations were developed. Moreover it was shown that the proposed solution allow information transfer in a short bursts over the same system as energy transfer.

Loans for civil servants and police employees must be given to employees who are entitled to receive them. Lending without any criteria makes other employees not accept them. Lending using criteria ensures that the employee given the loan is an employee who deserves to receive it. The ahp method is able to complete the selection of employees who are eligible for the loan. Because of the criteria that can determine the weight value for each attribute, and then proceed with a ranking process that will select the best alternative from a number of alternatives. In this case, the alternative in question is the one who is entitled to receive a loan based on attributes, or determining criteria in selecting employees who are eligible to receive loans. Based on the ranking, Juliana Situmorang's employee has the highest score of 0.977 compared to other employees. The ahp method is the right step in determining employees who are eligible to receive loans.
