Organ-weights and body-composition in mice bred for many generations at – 3˚C

Three classes of highly inbred 16-week-old mice, of strain A 2 G / Tb , were studied: (i) controls, kept at 21 °C; (ii) ‘new stock’, of the first or second generations reared in a room kept at –3 °C; (iii) ‘old stock’, of the fourteenth generation reared at –3 °C. All were bred at the same time. The new - stock mice were lighter than the controls, their tails were shorter, and they (especially the females) had less fat. They contained more water, and less nitrogen and collagen. The males, but not the females, had less calcium and phosphorus. The heart, stomach and small intestine were heavier than in the controls, and the intestine was longer. Liver and kidneys, too, were heavier, but these differences were large only in the females. The shaved skin was lighter, but the hair, especially in the females, heavier. Gonad weights were lower. The spleen tended to be lighter, but varied greatly. Most of these differences from the controls resemble those seen in adult laboratory rats exposed to cold for a few weeks. The old stock , of both sexes, had almost the same body-weight as the controls, but resembled the new stock in tail-length: hence the effect of cold on growth of the tail was independent of body-weight. The old-stock males had more fat than the controls, while the females were intermediate between the controls and the new stock. The males contained less water than the controls; while in nitrogen, collagen, calcium and phosphorus they did not differ significantly. The tendency to return towards the control state was less marked in the females. In weights of stomach, intestine and liver the old-stock males again resembled the controls; and their kidneys were lighter . They had, however, longer intestines than the controls and, like the new stock, they had heavier hearts. Their skin was lighter but hair, heavier. The spleen was lighter. Except in their kidneys and spleen, the old-stock females resembled the new-stock females, rather than the controls. Since other work has shown that the old-stock females are more efficient mothers than the new-stock, the old-stock mice of both sexes were clearly better adapted to cold than the new. This may have been due to intracellular changes making individual tissues more efficient. The change in the old stock cannot be due to selection of favourable genotypes; it may be due to a cumulative maternal effect.

The growth-promoting effects of a partially purified preparation of somatomedin (12·7 units/mg) were compared with those of various doses of bovine GH (5, 20 and 80 μg/day) when injected into hypopituitary dwarf mice. Growth parameters studied were body-weight and tail-length velocities (calculated as the slope of a regression line fitted to daily measurements against time), uptake of 35SO2−4 into costal cartilage in vivo and organ weights (heart, liver and kidney). In the first experiment somatomedin (6·4 units/day), bovine GH and 0·9% NaCl were injected once daily in a volume of 0·1 ml for 10 days. Treatment with bovine GH promoted a significant dose-dependent increase in body-weight and tail-length velocities and 35SO2−4 uptake into costal cartilage in vivo. Somatomedin also promoted a significant increase in body-weight velocity and 35SO2−4 uptake, both responses were between that observed with the lowest dose of bovine GH and control values. Somatomedin did not promote increase in tail-length velocity. Organ weights did not differ significantly between any of the treatment groups when expressed as mg/g body weight. In the second experiment somatomedin (a daily total of 21·6 units/day) and 0·9% NaCl were injected three times per day in a volume of 0·033 ml, bovine GH was again injected once daily in a volume of 0·1 ml, and the treatment period was 12 days. As in the first experiment all doses of bovine GH and somatomedin promoted a significant increase in body-weight velocity. These results are consistent with the somatomedin hypothesis.

Purified diets containing 25% lactose, agar, wood cellulose or raw potato starch, or 10% arabinose were compared with a control diet containing cornstarch as the only carbohydrate for effects upon dry weights of cleaned gastrointestinal organs in rats. Many effects of diets upon absolute organ weights and upon organ weights relative to body weight were found. When the lactose diet was fed for 1 week from weaning, the relative small intestine weight and the absolute and relative weights of both the cecum and the colon plus rectum were increased over the controls. When all of the diets were fed for 4–5 weeks, organ weights were increased by diets as follows: relative stomach weight by agar and cellulose, absolute and relative small intestine weights by lactose, relative small intestine weight by arabinose, absolute and relative cecum weights by all experimental diets except cellulose, and absolute and relative colon plus rectum weights by all five experimental diets. Thus, stomach growth is affected by diet little or not at all, while intestine growth is differently affected in its different regions by various diets. Increases in dry weights or numbers of fecal pellets were not at all related to increases in small intestine or cecum weight, and were not well related to increases in colon plus rectum weight. Using these facts and knowledge of certain properties of the various substances, certain ideas as to modes of action of diets in producing the observed changes were excluded.

Nilai heritabilitas untuk bobot ikan adalah 0,238 (jantan) dan 0,505 (betina).Punten carp breeding programs were carried out by individual selection for body weight trait. The base population for selection activities were conducted by mass breeding of parent consisted of 20 female and 21 male collected from area Punten, eight female and six male (Kepanjen), seven female and 12 male (Kediri), 27 female and 10 male (Sragen), 15 female and 11 male (Blitar). Larvae 10 days old reared for four moths. Then after spacing out 50% of total harvest, the offspring reared for 14 months for selection activity based on the sampling of 250 individual each population. Selection of broodstock candidates performed since 18 months age on male and female populations separately by selecting based on 10% of fish with best body weight. Candidates selected broodstocks were then maintained until mature. In oder to produce the next generation 150 pairs were sets and held for mass spawning. The results revealed that selection response were positive, 49.89 g (3.66%) for male and 168.47 (11.43%) for female. Heritability for body weight is 0.238 (male) and 0.505 (female).

SummaryEimeria grenieri was isolated from intensively reared guinea fowl in Britain. The oocysts had average dimensions of 21·09 × 15·48 μm and a small micropyle. Three generations of schizonts were found in the small intestine. The first mature schizonts were found in the upper intestine 30 h after inoculation. Second-generation schizonts were seen 48–80 h and third-generation schizonts were present 80–96 h after inoculation. These schizonts were found in the middle and lower small intestine. It was confirmed that gametogony of this species occurs only in the caeca. The pre-patent time was 112 h and the reproductive index from a dose of 6 × 102 oocysts was 8 × 104. Doses of between 1 × 104 and 1 × 106 caused severe depression of body weight gain. Immunity to re-infection developed rapidly. Sulphaquinoxaline at a dose of 0·04% in the drinking water given after inoculation was effective in reducing the pathogenic effects of the disease. Robenidine given in the food at a concentration of 16·5 ppm (50% of the recommended concentration for chickens) was effective in preventing disease caused by E. grenieri. The endogenous life-cycle of E. grenieri was completed in the chorioallantoic membrane of developing chicken embryos.

It is sometimes essential to have an animal in the hand to study some of their ecological and biological characteristics. However, capturing a solitary, cryptic, elusive arboreal species such as the red panda in the wild is challenging. We developed and successfully tested a protocol for tracking, trapping, immobilization, and handling of red pandas in the wild in eastern Nepal. We established a red panda sighting rate of 0.89 panda/day with a capture success rate of 0.6. We trapped and collared one animal in 3.7 days. On average, we took nearly 136 (range 50–317) min to capture an animal after spotting it. Further processing was completed in 38.5 (21–70) min. Before capture, we found it difficult to recognize the sex of the red panda and to differentiate sub-adults above six months from adults. However, body weight, body length, tail length, shoulder height, and chest girth can be used for diagnosis, as these attributes are smaller in sub-adults. Our method is a welfare-friendly way of trapping and handling wild red pandas. We report new morphometric data that could serve as a guide for field identification.

The Pannonian root vole Alexandromys oeconomus ssp. mehelyi represents a rare glacial relict, whose occurrence is nowadays bound to several areas in Europe. Four somatic and 25 craniological features were analysed, based on 355 measured specimens. Sex is a significant factor affecting the average value of all four somatic features, where all of them achieve higher values in males than in females. While body length and tail length were also affected by seasons, body weight and the length of the hind foot were stable features present across the seasons. In cranial features, the largest variability in the adult population is characterised by neurocranium breadth (LaN), total length of the cranial base (LB), and skull (LCr); whereas the smallest variability of the cranial dimensions is reflected in the values of the greatest palatal breadth (PS) and postorbital breadth (Io). Calculating the weight from cranial remains may be used to estimate the size of the prey and to determine vole biomass consumed by predators, such as raptors, highlighting the utility of studying feeding ecology.

This study was conducted to determine the growth performance, correlation and regression estimates of seven-chicken strains in South-western Nigeria using a total of 300 day-old chicks. The birds were divided into seven groups based on their strain. The seven strains are Normal feather (NF), Fulani ecotype (FE), Frizzle feather (FF), naked neck (NN) and Transylvania indigenous strains while Hubbard and Marshal were meat-type exotic chickens. There were forty- five (45) unsexed day-old chicks in each strain except the Frizzle feather that were 30 in number. Completely randomized design (CRD) was used for the trial that lasted for 8 weeks. The birds were fed experimental diets ad libitum throughout the period of the study. Results showed that there were significant differences (p<0.05) in the initial and final weights of the birds. It was observed that exotic strains weighed heavier (3569.73gHB) than their indigenous counterparts (1391.11gNF). However, the Fulani ecotype weighed heaviest (1840.99g) among Nigeria indigenous strains during the experimental period. This showed that FE strains are generally heavy breed chicken and could be incorporated into a meat producing indigenous chicken if improved upon. The result of the correlation coefficients showed that a very strong, positive and highly significant (P<0.001) relationship existed between body weights and linear body measurements as most of the values are (>0.40). All the body parameter examined had significant (p<0.01) and direct relationship with the body weight. Shoulder-to-tail length (STL) had the highest coefficient of 0.98.The high correlation estimates obtained in this study could be as a result of pleiotropy, heterozygosity or linkage of genes in the birds. The three functions were highly significant (p<0.05) for all the parameters studied. This shows that the functions well described the parameters. On the basis of coefficient of determination (R ), the body weight of poultry birds at any age can be predicted most accurately with BRG using cubic function.
