AbstractIn the recent years, many computational tools, such as image analysis, data management, process-based simulation and upscaling tools, were developed to help quantify and understand water flow in the soil-root system, at multiple scales (tissue, organ, plant and population). Several of these tools work together or, at least, are compatible. However, for the un-informed researcher, they might seem disconnected, forming a unclear and disorganised succession of tools. In this article, we present how different pieces of work can be further developed by connecting them to analyse soil-root-water relations in a comprehensive and structured network. This “explicit network of soil-root computational tools” informs the reader about existing tools and help them understand how their data (past and future) might fit within the network. We also demonstrate the novel possibilities of scale-consistent parameterizations made possible by the network with a set of case studies from the literature. Finally, we discuss existing gaps in the network and how we can move forward to fill them.HighlightsMany computational tools exist to quantify water flow in the soil-root system. These tools can be arranged in a comprehensive network that can be leveraged to better interpret experimental data.

This paper describes a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the eight oil film stiffness and damping coefficients for a novel low impedance hydrodynamic bearing. The novel design incorporates a recess in the bearing surface which is connected to a standard commercial gas bag accumulator; this arrangement reduces the oil film dynamic stiffness and leads to improved machine response and stability. A finite difference method was used to solve Reynolds equation and yield the pressure distribution in the bearing oil film. Integration of the pressure profile then enabled the fluid film forces to be evaluated. A perturbation technique was used to determine the dynamic pressure components, and hence to determine the eight oil film stiffness and damping coefficients. Experimental data was obtained from a laboratory test rig in which a test bearing, floating on a rotating shaft, was excited by a multi-frequency force signal. Measurements of the resulting relative movement between bearing and journal enabled the oil film coefficients to be measured. The results of the work show good agreement between theoretical and experimental data, and indicate that the oil film impedance of the novel design is considerably lower than that of a conventional bearing.

Introduction: A recent meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concluded that mechanical thrombectomy using Solitaire for large vessel ischemic stroke was effective with significantly reduced disability. Hypothesis: Our hypothesis was that treatment with the Penumbra Aspiration System and the novel 3D Stent Retriever would demonstrate similar angiographic and functional outcomes compared to use of Solitaire. Methods: The 3D trial was a RCT to compare the safety and effectiveness of the 3D Stent Retriever when used with the Penumbra Aspiration System (3D/PS) compared to the PS alone. Inclusion criteria for the 3D RCT included presentation with NIH Stroke Scale ≥ 8 and refractory to or not eligible for IV rtPA. Analysis compared reperfusion to mTICI 2b or 3 and functional independence (mRS 0-2 at 90 days) in a 3D Trial cohort with ASPECTS 8-10 vs the meta-analysis data reported by Campbell et al ( Stroke 2016). Results: One hundred four (104) of 198 patients met analysis criteria. Baseline ASPECTS (median [IQR]) were similar between the 3D Trial ASPECTS 8-10 cohort (3D/PS, PS, combined: 9 [8,10]) and Campbell group (9 [7,10]). Substantial reperfusion (mTICI 2b or 3) was experienced in 84.6% (44/52) of 3D/PS and 75.0% (39/52) of PS alone cases, similar to the Campbell group (76.6%). When both arms were pooled, results (79.8%) were also similar to Campbell. With regards to functional independence, both 3D cohorts and pooled trial results showed similar rates compared with Campbell (Figure). Conclusions: The novel 3D Stent Retriever + Penumbra System and the Penumbra Aspiration System alone showed similar reperfusion and functional outcomes compared to Solitaire.

Electric streamer discharges (streamers) in the air are a very important stage of lightning, taking place before formation of the leader discharge, and with which an electric discharge starts from conducting objects which enhance the background electric field, such as airplanes. Despite years of research, it is still not well understood what mechanism determines the values of a streamer’s parameters, such as its radius and propagation velocity. The novel Streamer Parameter Model (SPM) was made to explain this mechanism, and to provide a way to efficiently calculate streamer parameters. Previously, we demonstrated that SPM results compared well with a limited set of experimental data. In this article, we compare SPM predictions to the published hydrodynamic simulation (HDS) results.

In this review we systematized the theoretical and experimental data concerning the versatile approaches for the synthesis of N-acylphenothiazines. The aim of the study was to compile the literature reported worldwide in the past 20 years. This article also reviewed the analysis of pharmacological activities of these heterocycles as one of the promising chemotherapeutic objects for the modern bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. It has been hypothesized that the enormous biological potential of these moieties is due to the radical nature in the acyl moiety. Therefore, the present review will be a good contribution to the literature and will provide the platform for the medicinal chemistry researchers to carry out more studies aiming the N-acylphenothiazine moieties as the novel chemotherapeutic agents.

Experimental validation of the design guideline to prevent the failure of a thermometer well by vortex-induced vibration is presented, clarifying the effect of structure damping on displacement amplitudes of a cantilever cylinder. The available experimental data in piping are limited to those with small damping in water flow, because of the difficulty in increasing structure damping of the cantilever cylinders in experiments. In the present experiment, high-viscosity oil within cylinders is used to control their structure damping. Resulting values of reduced damping Cn are 0.49, 0.96, 1.23, 1.98, and 2.22. The tip displacements of the cylinder induced by vortex vibration were measured in the range of reduced velocity Vr from 0.7 to 5 (Reynolds number is 7.8×104 at Vr=1). Cylinders with reduced damping 0.49 and 0.96 showed vortex-induced vibration in the flow direction in the Vr>1 region. However, in cases of reduced damping of 1.23, 1.98, and 2.22, the vibration was suppressed to less than 1 percent diameter. It is confirmed that the criteria of “Vr<3.3 and Cn>1.2” for the prevention of vortex-induced vibration is reasonably applicable to a cantilever cylinder in a water flow pipe.

ABSTRACTObjectiveThe Collaborative Emergency Centre (CEC) model of care was implemented in Nova Scotia without an identifiable, directly comparable precedent. It features interprofessional teams working towards the goal of providing improved access to primary health care, and appropriate access to 24/7 emergency care. One important component of CEC functioning is overnight staffing by a paramedic and registered nurse (RN) team consulting with an off-site physician. Our objective was to ascertain the attitudes, feelings and experiences of paramedics working within Nova Scotia’s CECs.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study informed by the principles of grounded theory. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with paramedics with experience working in a CEC. Analysis involved an inductive grounded approach using constant comparative analysis. Data collection and analysis continued until thematic saturation was reached.ResultsFourteen paramedics participated in the study. The majority were male (n=10, 71%) with a mean age of 44 years and mean paramedic experience of 14 years. Four major themes were identified: 1) interprofessional relationships, 2) leadership support, 3) value to community and 4) paramedic identity.ConclusionsParamedics report largely positive interprofessional relationships in Nova Scotia’s CECs. They expressed enjoyment working in these centres and believe this work aligns with their professional identity. High levels of patient and community satisfaction were reported. Paramedics believe future expansion of the model would benefit from development of continuing education and improved communication between leadership and front-line workers.
