Predictive modeling of material properties for aircraft control cables

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between material properties and alloying elements of carbon steels through predictive modeling. Aircraft control cables are usually made of steel materials and subjected to deformation because of the motion of control surfaces such as aileron, rudder, elevator and trailing edge flaps. Investigation of the relationship between material properties and alloying elements would therefore be explored. Design/methodology/approach This study is focused on the modeling of mechanical properties of carbon steels concerning the content of alloying elements by using response surface methodology with false discovery rate (FDR) correction approach. SAS Institute JMP data analysis software was used to develop response and argument relationships in various carbon steels without including thermomechanical treatment effect. Mechanical properties were considered as tensile strength, yield strength, ductility, and Brinell hardness. Carbon (0.28 Wt.%-0.46 Wt.%) and manganese (0.7 Wt.%-0.9 Wt.%) proportions were gathered from ASM Handbook. Linear regression models were tested for the statistical adequacy by using analysis of variance and statistical significance analysis. A posterior probability, which refers to Benjamini–Hochberg FDR (BH-FDR), was embedded as multiple testing corrections of the t-test p-values. Findings Predictive modeling of the material properties for aircraft control cables was successfully achieved by using the response surface method with BH-FDR significance level of 0.05. Originality/value The effect of statistically developed graphical interactions of alloying elements on the common mechanical properties of such steels would provide prompt comparison to material suppliers and part manufacturers except those subjected to thermomechanical treatment applications.

In this work, ultrahigh carbon steels (UHCS) obtained by powder metallurgy with CIP and argon sintered at 1150°C. Then, they were rolled at 850 °C with a reduction of 40 %. Finally, steels were quenched at 850 and 1000 °C in oil. In each step, hardness, bending strength and wear performance were evaluated. Obtained results are justified with a metallographic study by SEM. Both mechanical properties and wear resistance are highly favoured with the thermomechanical treatment that removes the porosity of the material. Moreover, final quenching highly hardens the material. The obtained material could be used as matrix for tool steels.

A relative method, defined as indirect approach to evaluate the material properties via the relationship between unknown properties and a known property, is proposed to estimate some properties that could not be measured by the traditional methods for ceramics. Experiments and theoretic analysis based on the relative method were carried out in this study to estimate the properties in following aspects: determining the temperature dependence of elastic modulus of some machineable ceramics by comparing the deflections; obtaining the modulus and strength of ceramic coatings supported by substrates, from the variation in properties of the rectangular beam samples before and after coating; estimating the residual stresses in tempered glass by comparing the change in the surface strength after strengthening.

This work uses the finite element technique to model the elasto-plastic deformation of a hemisphere contacting a rigid flat for various material properties typical of aluminum, bronze, copper, titanium and malleable cast iron. Additionally, this work conducted parametric FEM tests on a generic material in which the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio are varied independently while the yield strength is held constant. A larger spectrum of material properties are covered in this work than in most previous works. The results are compared to two previously formulated elasto-plastic models simulating the deformation of a hemisphere in contact with a rigid flat. Both of the previously formulated models use carbon steel mechanical properties to arrive at empirical formulations implied to pertain to various materials. While both models considered several carbon steels with varying yield strengths, they did not test materials with varying Poisson’s ratio or elastic modulus. The previously generated elasto-plastic models give fairly good predictions when compared to the FEM results for various material properties from the current work, except that one model produces more accurate predictions overall, especially at large deformations where other models neglect important trends due to decreases in “hardness” with increasing deformation.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the influence of additive manufactured polymer injection moulds on the mechanical properties of moulded parts. Therefore, polymer moulds are used to inject standard specimens to compare material properties to specimens produced using a conventional aluminium tool. Design/methodology/approach PolyJet technology is used to three-dimensional (3D)-print a mould insert in Digital ABS and selective laser sintering (SLS) technology is used to 3D-print a mould insert in polyamide (PA) 3200 GF. A conventionally aluminium milled tool serves as reference. Standard specimens are produced to compare resulting mechanical properties, shrinkage behaviour and morphology. Findings The determined material characteristics of the manufactured prototypes from the additive manufactured tools show differences in terms of mechanical behaviour to those from the aluminium reference tool. The most significant differences are an up to 25 per cent lower tensile elongation and an up to 63 per cent lower elongation at break resulting in an embrittlement of the specimens produced. These differences seem to be mainly due to the different morphological structure caused by the lower thermal conductivity and greater surface roughness of the polymer tools. Research limitations/implications The determined differences in mechanical behaviour can partly be assigned to differences in surface roughness and morphological structure of the resulting parts. The exact extend of either cause, however, cannot be clearly determined. Originality/value This study provides a comparison between the part material properties from conventionally milled aluminium tools and polymer inserts manufactured via additive tooling.

 Case Carburized (CC) low carbon steels containing Ni, Cr and Mo alloying elements are widely used for transmission gears in automobile, as it possesses desired mechanical properties. In order to cut cost and save scarce materials like Ni and Mo for strategic applications, steel alloyed with Boron has been developed, which gives properties comparable to Ni-Cr-Mo alloyed steel. In the process of steel development, care was taken to ensure precipitation of boron which results in precipitation hardening. The characterization of the developed boron steel had exhibited properties comparable to Ni-Cr-Mo alloyed steel and superior to conventional boron steel.

The results suggest small and uniform grains in the Cu vias, as well as stronger interfaces between the via and Si led to smaller via extrusion, and are thus preferable for reduced via extrusion failure and improved TSV reliability.

Purpose This study aims to discuss the determination of the unknown in-plane mechanical material properties of printed circuit boards (PCBs) by correlating the results from dynamic testing and finite element (FE) models using the response surface method (RSM). Design/methodology/approach The first 10 resonant frequencies and vibratory mode shapes are measured using modal analysis with hammer testing experiment, and hence, systematically compared with finite element analysis (FEA) results. The RSM is consequently used to minimize the cumulative error between dynamic testing and FEA results by continuously modifying the FE model, to acquire material properties of PCBs. Findings Great agreement is shown when comparing FEA to measurements, the optimum in-plane material properties were identified, and hence, verified. Originality/value This paper used FEA and RSMs along with modal measurements to obtain in-plane material properties of PCBs. The methodology presented here can be easily generalized and repeated for different board designs and configurations.
