Typically in longitudinal quantitative research, classifications are tracked over time. However, most classifications change in absolute terms in that some die whilst others are created, and in their meaning. There is a need, therefore, to re-think how longitudinal quantitative research might explore both the qualitative changes to classification systems as well as the quantitative changes within each classification. By drawing on the changing classifications of local food retail outlets in the city of York (UK) since the 1950s as an illustrative example, an alternative way of graphing longitudinal quantitative data is presented which ultimately provides a description of both types of change over time. In so doing, this article argues for the increased use of ‘dirty data’ in longitudinal quantitative analysis, a step which allows for the exploration of both qualitative and quantitative changes to, and within, classification systems. This ultimately challenges existing assumptions relating to the quality and type of data used in quantitative research and how change in the social world is measured in general.

Sean Safford’s 2009 book Why the Garden Club Couldn’t Save Youngstown introduces a revolutionary idea that much of a community’s economic resilience is tied to the social capital that exists within it. Recent research suggests that social capital not only benefits those who develop it, but it can serve as a source of economic development in the communities in which it arises. Past quantitative research on the economic benefit of social capital has only examined the city or higher levels of aggregation. This study measures social capital in three diverse socioeconomic neighborhoods to better understand how social capital can serve as a tool for economic development. An ordered probit regression model was developed to examine how individual and neighborhood levels of social capital benefit households within these communities. Moreover, this study addresses how differences in social capital across neighborhoods are explained by both individual and neighborhood characteristics.

Background: the social impact of Parkinson's is difficult to capture in quantitative research given the condition's variable presentation, so qualitative research is needed to support a person-centred approach. Aims: to describe how people with Parkinson's experience living with their condition over time. Methods: 27 audio-recorded verbatim-transcribed interviews were analysed through the grounded theory method. Findings: past, present and future were the core categories that emerged. Past is the dimension of regretted memories of past life overturned by the communication of diagnosis. Present is the time dimension in which patients concretely experience the hindrances associated with the condition (loss of autonomy, submissive acceptance and social embarrassment), and the resources (search for autonomy, serene or in-progress acceptance, and social support). Future is characterised by both positive visions of tomorrow and negative ones (worry, resignation, denial). Conclusion: these results, highlighting what living with Parkinson's means over time, may contribute to a better tailoring of nursing practice to the person's needs and rhythm, in a perspective of continuous adaptation.

The assembly movement of Buenos Aires was one of the main political actors that emerged with the social explosion of December 2001. It initially called for a complete renewal of the country’s elites, but it gradually divided into a sector that focused on neighborhood demands and a sector that adopted a national perspective. A detailed examination of a decade of development of two assemblies that are paradigmatic examples of the movement’s division show that they retained their political identities over time, with the result that the “neighborhood” assembly disbanded once the problems on which it had concentrated were considered resolved while the “popular” assembly continued to engage in cultural and political projects.

Changes in urban planning resulting from the process of reviewing the cityplan for Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ were the object of this work. The objective of this research was to verify changes in land use legislation due to the revision of the 2008cityplan considering Araújo's proposal (2018), especially for the macro road system and for green areas in urban areas. In the methodological process, bibliographic and documentary data such as laws and maps were collected, an updated bibliographic review was carried out, and comparisons of maps and laws were made. It is noteworthy that due to the social distance caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the research was carried out remotely using the Google Classroom/Meet platform. The results indicated that the new urban legislation significantly expanded the macro road system and the green areas of preservation in the municipal urban area, in line with Araújo's proposal, with emphasis on the creation of the environmental protection road, which will enable the population's access to the green conservation areas that have been disorderly occupied over time. It was concluded that the revision of the Campos dos Goytacazescityplan allowed for quantitative and qualitative changes in the macro road system and in the city's green area system in a positive way.

This chapter concludes the book by examining the extent to which shops and bars were deeply integrated into the social and structural underpinnings of Roman urbanism. It looks more closely at the very things being retailed in bars: so, something of the menu of the Roman food and drink outlet. It also considers the role of shops and bars in the social and economic life of the city, and the extent to which these types of spaces serve as an index of urban living conditions. The aim of the chapter, indeed of the book, is not simply to argue for the “importance” of retail outlets to Roman life. It is rather to stimulate more and better ways to integrate studies of Roman retail into our growing understanding of cities and their urban communities.

Abstract Recognized as the basis for maintaining the functionality of the community in disaster conditions, the protection of critical infrastructure is one of the most important measures to improve the resilience of society. Starting from the fact that society can be affected by various natural and anthropogenic disasters, the subject of this chapter refers to a comprehensive analysis of the security aspects of critical infrastructure protection in anthropogenic (man-made) disasters. On the other hand, the social goal of the research is to determine the level of public awareness of the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from these disasters. By applying the quantitative research tradition, quantitative research was realized in the area of the city of Belgrade, in which 200 respondents were interviewed by the method of random sampling. The obtained research results unequivocally indicate that preventive action in this area should be mainly focused on the adoption of strategies based on which plans are made to prevent the occurrence of these disasters, as well as operational procedures for the protection of critical infrastructure.
