Saberes e fazeres. Trajetórias de trabalho.   Knowledge, practice and collective memory: the social trajectories of barbers in downtown Porto Alegre (RS)   Abstract  By considering the memoirs of barbers working in downtown Porto Alegre (RS), I intend to discuss the knowledge and practice of this craft, examining the social networks and the profession social trajectories linked to the work of the interlocutors. Abstract: Based on the evidence that the programs of land regularization have a curative nature, not having the capacity to prevent irregularity, we try to show in this study that the instruments provided by the City Statute, although necessary, are not enough to respond to the challenge faced by brazilian cities. This challenge is related to the institutional capacity of making an urban and housing policy that matches to the land regularization policies mechanisms to prevent the everyday production of informal settlements, through the offer of regular lots with low prices. We argue that the Brazilian juridical-urbanistic order provided by the City Statute does not present effective guarantees of implementation. One foresees a long juridical-political dispute process between the ones who are interested in maintaining the old juridical order cored by the absolute property right and those who defend an emergent juridical order that guarantees the social function of city and property. This article analyses the case of Porto Alegre city, where an innovative urban and housing policy called Urbanizador Social (Social Urbanizer) was created. Keywords: housing policy; land regularization; urban planning.

Parkour – a placemaking practiceParkour is a relatively new movement-culture that has evolved rapidly in Denmark since 2005. In the academic field of scholarly work on parkour the movement-culture has been interpreted as a subversive bodily strategy for the subject to handle architecture, space and power. The movements of the traceurs are being ”read” for their cultural significance on a discursive level. The traceurs does not follow the social norms for how to move in public places, but balances on the back of benches, jumps over rails and crawls down stairs. In Denmark the interpretation of the movements of parkour as a critical practice meets oppositions. The first specialized facility for parkour was built in 2007 in cooperation with both the peoples academy ”Gerlev Idrætshøjskole” and practitioners of parkour. Today over 47 facilities for parkour exist. A problem lies within present studies’ point of departure which stems from abstract ideas about the city and political resistance instead of departuring in the bodily practice. What do the practioners actually do, when they practice parkour? This article seeks to answer this particular question and tries to do so based on the authors own experience and ethnographic fieldwork with practitioners in their daily training. Parkour is played out in the streets as well as in specialized facilities. What binds these places together and constitute parkour as a movement-culture, is a dynamic pattern of movements and a practical knowledge about the spatial and adaptive dimensions of these. These movements and the knowledge are incorporated into the bodies of the practitioners. By utilizing a theory of affordance by James Gibson and Polanyi’s concept of tacit knowledge the dynamic pattern can be understood as perceptual skills that opens up a new relation to the surroundings; in urban spaces as well as specialized facilities.

There are no labor routines of soccer referees in amateur tournaments. To this end, I participate as a game official for the municipal soccer league, held by the city of Porto Alegre - RS. I want to follow the activity of referees to draw an overview of what I have so far termed "to get by" on refereeing. I use this expression because people who engage in this service do not exercise it as the only paid activity in their routines. Thus, the purpose of this text is to explore essayistically how elements gained in the field can contribute to the elaboration of this panorama, in which the traffic of people and workplaces are quite varied. To this end I find myself in the social studies of economics to address the notion of markets. I infer that the association between referees, referee leagues and football leagues are the entities with agency skills within this panorama and that reports of daily work occur from the different forms of measurement engendered by them. Keywords: Work. Abstract This paper handles a unique example of religious tolerance and Christian-Muslim coexistence in one of the most conservative Islamic societies; the Saudi Arabian society, by going through the story of Khawaja Yeni, the Greek merchant who lived in the city of Jeddah in the middle of the twentieth century, integrated with its people, formed extensive relations with its Muslim people, and was able to remain vivid in the collective memory of its inhabitants despite his death has Christian decades ago. The Yeni model represents a model of mutual understanding and coexistence between Islamic and Christian cultures. It would not have mattered if the story had been in another Islamic country, but it was in Saudi Arabia and in the city of Jeddah, which is part of the emirate of Mecca, the holy capital of Muslims, this has made the story of Yeni eye-catching and intriguing. Therefore, I saw fit to give that subject a special care and a thorough inquest in order to capture the details of the social, cultural and religious life experienced and interacted with by this Greek merchant. In the absence of official documentation of the details of public life in the mid-20th century, the stories and news about Yeni remained only circulating amongst the inhabitants of Jeddah, and were not written or collected in an academic research that would have saved them from loss and made them available for specialists to study and analyze. Therefore, I relied on the method of “oral history’s documentation” and I gathered these narratives from the mouths of the men who lived and worked with Yeni. Then I analyzed these narratives and drafted them in an academic form that brings together all the narratives from popular circles about the personality of this wonderful Christian who gave a wonderful example of coexistence and integration into a very conservative Islamic society.

The assembly movement of Buenos Aires was one of the main political actors that emerged with the social explosion of December 2001. It initially called for a complete renewal of the country’s elites, but it gradually divided into a sector that focused on neighborhood demands and a sector that adopted a national perspective. A detailed examination of a decade of development of two assemblies that are paradigmatic examples of the movement’s division show that they retained their political identities over time, with the result that the “neighborhood” assembly disbanded once the problems on which it had concentrated were considered resolved while the “popular” assembly continued to engage in cultural and political projects.

Despite its highly visible physical reunification, Berlin has social fault lines that seriously challenge the city?s integration. This article reviews the multiple cleavages that crisscross Berlin?s social fabric and assesses whether and how these divides are being bridged. East-West, neighborhood, religious, national/ethnic, and socioeconomic fractures remain wide. Even the social construction of the city?s history and the embedding of collective memory in the built environment are occasions for division. Hopeful signs of increasing social integration, however, are found in the new memorials, creative multicultural forms, vibrant and diverse immigrant neighborhoods, ethnic intermarriage, and other indicators. Under conditions of severe fiscal crisis, policies such as housing renovation, the Social City Program, local nonprofit labor market initiatives, and expanded language instruction are among the deliberate attempts to promote social integration in the "New" Berlin.

The social-philosophical research of a phenomenon of urban memory is presented in the article. The basic is the memory concept. Defining essence of individual and collective memory in their interrelation and development, the author has created the platform for conceptualization of urban memory. Concepts “memory figures”, “reminiscence modes”, “а subject of urban memory” “an object of urban memory”, “the place of memory”, “cultural forms”, development of typology of cultural forms of the urban landscape and the concept “substitution” have allowed to create complete idea of urban memory.Urban memory is treated as one of forms of collective memory. It is carried out by the city as social community and collective historical identity in relation to itself, to the famous historical figures and products of the sociocultural development who personify the historical past and the present of the city, are uniform for members of urban society, are included in a context of personal memory and are reproduced in individual memoirs.Urban memory is changeable and substituted (from Latin – substitutio) because in development there is a replacement of one objects of memory with others. It is substantially caused by transformation of an urban cultural landscape and can be interpreted as natural development of the city and memory. On the example of Vitebsk the author has shown dependence of transformation of urban memory on change of an urban cultural landscape. The multilayered substitutability of the city and its memory is as a result revealed.

AbstractThe article approaches the process of aging of the retired railroad work community in the city of Pelotas from the point of view of the Ethnography of the Duration. It pays attention to the plurality of images that are constitute of the narrative identities of the railroad workers and of their efforts to endure in the time facing his multiple discontinuities as the retirement, the aging itself and the railroad transport crisis in Brazil. I focused on their projects, their engagements, their claimings for duration of the collective memory. I pointed out to the actions of the retired workers are directly implied with the impacts of “the end” of the productive model based on railroads and also related with the dissolution of their professional community. I intend to demonstrate that the crisis has direct relation with the duration of the memories not as their antithesis but much more as a base for the resilience actions. My experience between the social networks of the railroad community was the base for refletion that the anthropological efforts can be allies of the duration projects of the urban workers populations.
