Since 1996, the technical subjects comprised of Engineering Technology (TK), Engineering Drawing (LK) and Inventions (RC) have been introduced as elective subjects for Form 4 and Form 5 students.  Examination results for TK, LK and RC from 2006 to 2010 in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Examination were less encouraging and shows some declination of students performance.  Data from the Ministry of Education also show a decline in students’ enrolment in TK, LK and RC between 10 to 17 percent from 2009 to 2011.  Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate on the implementation of TK, LK and RC in the input, process and product dimensions. A CIPP model was used as a conceptual framework for the study. Research design used in this study was programme evaluation. Stratified random sampling was used to select 712 respondents from national secondary schools in Peninsular Malaysia consisted of 159 administrators, 176 teachers and 377 students. Questionnaires, interview protocols and observation checklists were used as instruments in this study. Cronbach Alpha reliability index for the three sets of questionnaires were between 0.77 to 0.95. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The empirical data of the study found that staff training aspects need to be improved, especially staff training organized by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education in terms of knowledge and skills of teachers for all three subjects.Interview and observation data were also presented to support the quantitative findings. Implications and recommendations for teaching and learning as well as for future research are presented and discussed.

This study analyzed sudoku solving skills of preschool children and to ascertain whether there was a difference between children who were educated according to the Ministry of Education preschool education program and the Montessori approach. Sudoku skills of children were analyzed by gender, age, duration of preschool attendance, mother’s and father’s education level and previous experience of playing sudoku using a 12-question Sudoku Skills Measurement Tool developed for this research study. The study sample of the study consisted of 118 children (57 girls, 61 boys) aged between 54-77 months. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in sudoku skills by gender. However, sudoku skills varied with age (54-65 months and 66-77 months) in favor of older groups. Children's sudoku skills were more developed with an increase in education level of either parent. Children who had been in preschool for longer had higher sudoku scores. A previous experience of playing sudoku did not impact sudoku scores. Sudoku skills of children who were educated according to the Montessori program were more developed compared to those of children educated according to Ministry of National Education program.

Purpose – In the new mandatory National Preschool Curriculum Standards introduced by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the play-based approach has been emphasized in the teaching and learning process. This study aimed to find out teachers’ perception towards the use of the play-based approach in the language and literacy development of preschoolers.   Method – A structured questionnaire survey was the main instrument used for data collection. The respondents consisted of 60 teachers from four agencies which provide preschool education, namely the Ministry of Education, KEMAS, Jabatan Perpaduan Negara (JPN), and private preschool centers in the district of Hulu Langat Selangor. All respondents were randomly selected. Of the 60, 51 respondents completed the survey. To gain additional insights into teachers’ perceptions 12 respondents were purposely selected from this group to be interviewed. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze data from the survey.   Findings – The results showed that teachers have a positive response towards a play-based approach in preschoolers’ language and literacy development. They believed children like to play and are actively involved in play. However, they were unsure about the use of play based approach. Issues and constraints such as time allocation for play activities, limited and unsuitable space for play, and lack of knowledge and skills required to implement developmentally appropriate teaching including play, made them resort to a didactic teacher-directed approach in their classrooms.   Significance – The study points to the importance of providing teachers with knowledge and skills on the use of play in their teaching approach. Intervention programs and collaborations among the agencies providing preschool education must be established to enhance the quality of teaching practices and to ensure the new curriculum is effectively implemented.
