Parametric study on the performance of combined power plant of steam and gas turbines

Abstract This paper deals with aspects of the combined power and power (CPP) plants. Such plants consist of two major parts; the steam turbine and gas turbine plants. This study investigates the efficiency of CPP under the effect of several factors. CPP plants can achieve the highest thermal efficiency obtained with turbomachinery up to date. In this cycle, the anticipated waste thermal energy of the exhaust of gas turbine is used to generate a high pressure steam to empower the steam turbine in the steam cycle. By systematically varying the main design parameters, their influence on the CPP plant can be revealed. A comprehensive parametric study was conducted to measure the influence of the main parameter of the gas and steam cycles on the performance of CPP. The results exhibit that the overall plant thermal efficiency is significantly greater than that of either the two turbines. Due to the high thermal efficiency, a significant reduction in the greenhouse effect can be achieved. It is found that regenerative steam cycle will reduce the overall efficiency of combined cycle. On the other hand, using reheat steam cycle in the CPP plant will lead to an increase in both the thermal efficiency of the plant and the dryness factor of steam at exit of the steam turbine.

Combined-cycle power plants have been built with the gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator connected end-to-end to form a machine having a single shaft. To date, these plants have utilized a nonreheat steam cycle and a single-casing steam turbine of conventional design, connected to the collector end of the generator through a flexible shaft coupling. A new design has been developed for application of an advanced gas turbine of higher rating and higher firing temperature and exhaust gas temperature with a reheat steam cycle. The gas turbine and steam turbine are fully integrated mechanically, with solid shaft couplings and a common thrust bearing. This paper describes the new machine, with emphasis on the steam turbine section where the elimination of the flexible coupling created a number of unusual design requirements. Significant benefits in reduced cost and reduced complexity of design, operation, and maintenance are achieved as a result of the integration of the machine and its control and auxiliary systems.

Many ideas were proposed to aim the generation thermal efficiency up to 60%, such as “Steam-Cooled H-Tech. Combined Cycle”, “Methanol Conversion Regenerative Gas Turbine”, “Kalina Cycle” etc. The target thermal efficiency of 60% based upon LHV, could be also attained, when applying mixed gas-steam cycle like ISTIG and/or GAS3D for advanced aeroderivative gas turbines, which comprise of multiple shafts with overall pressure ratio more than 50, and TIT more than 2600 F (1700 K). It might be meaningful to evaluate existing aeroderivative gas turbines like LM6000 etc. by applying such a improving concept, as the more advanced gas turbines to be derived from GE90, PW4000, and Trent800 are not available to date for land applications. The intercooled ICAD GT of 77 MW was adopted as a base engine, and it was derived that the water /steam-injected WI/GAS3D GT version could produce 106 MW with 56% thermal efficiency, and it must be emphasized that the power curve in variation with ambient temperature is very flat than conventional GT plants.

Gas turbine is widely applied in power-generation field, especially combined gas-steam cycle. In this paper, the new scheme of steam turbine driving compressor is investigated aiming at the gas-steam combined cycle power plant. Under calculating the thermodynamic process, the new scheme is compared with the scheme of conventional gas-steam combined cycle, pointing its main merits and shortcomings. At the same time, two improved schemes of steam turbine driving compressor are discussed.

This paper is aimed at designing and optimizing combined cycles for marine applications. For this purpose, an in-house numerical simulation tool called DNA (Dynamic Network Analysis) and a genetic algorithm-based optimization routine are used. The top cycle is modeled as the aero-derivative gas turbine LM2500, while four options for bottoming cycles are modeled. Firstly, a single pressure steam cycle, secondly a dual-pressure steam cycle, thirdly an ORC using toluene as the working fluid and an intermediate oil loop as the heat carrier, and lastly an ABC with inter-cooling are modeled. Furthermore, practical and operational aspects of using these three machinery systems for a high-speed ferry are discussed. Two scenarios are evaluated. The first scenario evaluates the combined cycles with a given power requirement, optimizing the combined cycle while operating the gas turbine at part load. The second scenario evaluates the combined cycle with the gas turbine operated at full load. For the first scenario, the results suggest that the thermal efficiencies of the combined gas and steam cycles are 46.3% and 48.2% for the single pressure and dual pressure steam cycles, respectively. The gas ORC and gas ABC combined cycles obtained thermal efficiencies of 45.6% and 41.9%, respectively. For the second scenario, the results suggest that the thermal efficiencies of the combined gas and steam cycles are 53.5% and 55.3% for the single pressure and dual pressure steam cycles, respectively. The gas ORC and gas ABC combined cycles obtained thermal efficiencies of 51.0% and 47.8%, respectively.

The effect of synthetic natural gas (SNG) and mixture of syngas and SNG fed to Natural Gas Combined-Cycle (NGCC) plants is presented in this study via a system-level simulation model. The commercial chemical process simulator, Pro/II®V8.1.1, was used in the study to build the analysis model. The NGCC plant consists of gas turbine (GT), heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine (ST). The study envisages two analyses as the basic and feasibility cases. The former is the benchmark case which is verified by the reference data with the GE 7FB gas turbine. According to vendor’s specification, the typical net plant efficiency of GE 7FB NGCC with two gas turbines to one steam turbine is 57.5% (LHV), and the efficiency is the benchmark in the simulation model built in the study. The latter introduces a feasibility study with actual parameters in Taiwan. The SNG-fed GE 7FB based combined-cycle is evaluated, and the mixture of SNG and syngas is also evaluated to compare the difference of overall performance between the two cases. The maximum ratio of syngas to SNG is 0.14 due to the constraint for keeping the composition of methane at a value of 80 mol%, to meet the minimum requirement of NG in Taiwan. The results show that the efficiency in either case of SNG or mixture of SNG and syngas is slightly lower than the counterpart in the benchmark one. Because the price of natural gas is much higher than that of coal, it results in higher idle capacity of NGCC. The advantage of adopting SNG in Taiwan is that it could increase the capacity factor of combined-cycles in Taiwan. The study shows a possible way to use coal and reduce the CO2emission, since coal provides nearly half of the electricity generation in Taiwan in recent years.

Air cooling blades are usually applied to gas turbines as a basic specification. This blade cooling air is almost 20% of compressor suction air and it means that a great deal of compression load is not converted effectively to turbine power generation. This paper proposes the CCM (Cascade Cooling Module) system of turbine blade air line and the consequent improvement of power generation, which is achieved by the reduction of cooling air consumption with effective use of recovered heat. With this technology, current gas turbines (TIT: turbine inlet temperature: 1350°C) can be up-rated to have a relative high efficiency increase. The increase ratio has a potential to be equivalent to that of 1500°C Class GT/CC against 1350°C Class. The CCM system is designed to enable the reduction of blade cooling air consumption by the low air temperature of 15°C instead of the usual 200–400°C. It causes the turbine operating air to increase at the constant suction air condition, which results in the enhancement of power and thermal efficiency. The CCM is installed in the cooling air line and is composed of three stage coolers: steam generator/fuel preheater stage, heat exchanger stage for hot water supplying and cooler stage with chilled water. The coolant (chilled water) for downstream cooler is produced by an absorption refrigerator operated by the hot water of the upstream heat exchanger. The proposed CCM system requires the modification of cooling air flow network in the gas turbine but produces the direct effect on performance enhancement. When the CCM system is applied to a 700MW Class CC (Combined Cycle) plant (GT TIT: 135°C Class), it is expected that there will be a 40–80MW increase in power and +2–5% relative increase in thermal efficiency.

Steam injection is a well-known principle for increasing gas turbine efficiency by taking advantage of the relatively high gas turbine exhaust temperatures. Unfortunately, performance is not sufficiently improved compared with alternative bottoming cycles. However, previously investigated supplements to the STIG-principle — such as sequential combustion and consideration of a back pressure steam turbine — led to a remarkable increase in efficiency. The cycle presented in this paper includes a further improvement: The steam, which exits from the back pressure steam turbine at a rather low temperature, is no longer led directly into the combustion chamber. Instead, it reenters the boiler to be further superheated. This modification yields additional improvement of the thermal efficiency due to a significant reduction of fuel consumption. Taking into account the simpler design compared with combined-cycle power plants, the described type of an advanced STIG-cycle (A-STIG) could represent an interesting alternative regarding peak and medium load power plants.

High-cycle pressure-ratio (38–42) gas turbines being developed for future aircraft and, in turn, industrial applications impose more critical disk and casing cooling and thermal-expansion problems. Additional attention, therefore, is being focused on cooling and the proper selection of materials. Associated blade-tip clearance control of the high-pressure compressor and high-temperature turbine is critical for high performance. This paper relates to the use of extracted steam from a steam turbine as a coolant in a combined cycle to enhance material selection and to control expansion in such a manner that the cooling process increases combined-cycle efficiency, gas turbine output, and steam turbine output.

A new reheat gas turbine system is being developed as a national project by the “Engineering Research Association for Advanced Gas Turbines” of Japan. The machine consists of two axial flow compressors, three turbines, intercooler, combustor and reheater. The pilot plant is expected to go into operation in 1982, and a prototype plant will be set up in 1984. The major objective of this reheat gas turbine is application to a combined cycle power plant, with LNG burning, and the final target of combined cycle thermal efficiency is to be 55 percent (LHV).

Mitsubishi completed design development and verification load testing of a steam-cooled M501H gas turbine at a combined cycle power plant at Takasago, Japan in 2001. Several advanced technologies were specifically developed in addition to the steam-cooled components consisting of the combustor, turbine blades, vanes, and the rotor. Some of the other key technologies consisted of an advanced compressor with a pressure ratio of 25:1, active clearance control, and advanced seal technology. Prior to the M501H, Mitsubishi introduced cooling-steam in “G series” gas turbines in 1997 to cool combustor liners. Recently, some of the advanced design technologies from the M501H gas turbine were applied to the G series gas turbine resulting in significant improvement in output and thermal efficiency. A noteworthy aspect of the technology transfer is that the upgraded G series M701G2 gas turbine has an almost equivalent output and thermal efficiency as H class gas turbines while continuing to rely on conventional air cooling of turbine blades and vanes, and time-proven materials from industrial gas turbine experience. In this paper we describe the key design features of the M701G2 gas turbine that make this possible such as the advanced 21:1 compressor with 14 stages, an advanced premix DLN combustor, etc., as well as shop load test results that were completed in 2002 at Mitsubishi’s in-house facility.
