Multibody Models for Tower Vibrations With an Unbalanced Rotor

Abstract This paper compares different models that can be used to analyze the vibrations of an unbalanced rotor with horizontal axis over a flexible tower. Model results are compared with experimental results. The modeled system is equivalent to a wind turbine with perfectly rigid blades. The selected models are the linear elastic model that is obtained using the linear theory of vibrations and two multibody models. The first multibody model uses Component Mode Synthesis for the description of the tower flexibility while the second multibody model used a lumped properties approach. Experimental results validate with reasonable agreement the resonance speeds of an unbalanced rotor. Furthermore, the models, while low degrees of freedom, give valuable insight of inertial loads on drivetrain components based on tower top dynamic motion. The work presented in this paper showed the use of 3 low-degrees of freedom models to predict resonance and tower top displacements. All simulation models did exhibit slightly higher resonance frequencies than the experimental results. The results showed that the tower top motion for the rectangular tower resembles a figure eight type motion, while the square tower top shows an elliptical motion.

To analyze the influence of suspension kinematics on tire wear, detailed simulation models are required. In this study, a non-linear, flexible multibody model of a rear axle system is built up in the simulation software MSC Adams/View. The physical model comprises the suspension kinematics, compliance, and dynamics as well as the non-linear behavior of the tire using the FTire model. FTire is chosen because it has a separate tire tread model to compute the contact pressure and friction force distribution in the tire contact patch. To build up the simulation model, a large amount of data is needed. Bushings, spring, and damper characteristics are modeled based on measurements. For the structural components (e.g., control arms), reverse engineering techniques are used. The components are 3D-scanned, reworked, and included as a modal reduced finite element (FE)-model using component mode synthesis by Craig–Bampton. Finally, the suspension model is validated by comparing the simulated kinematic and compliance characteristics to experimental results. To investigate the interaction of suspension kinematics and tire wear, straight line driving events, such as acceleration, driving with constant velocity, and deceleration, are simulated with different setups of wheel suspension kinematics. The influence of the setups on the resulting friction work between tire and road is examined, and an exemplarily calculation of tire wear based on a validated FTire tire model is carried out. The results demonstrate, on the one hand, that the chosen concept of elasto-kinematic axle leads to a relatively good match with experimental results and, on the other hand, that there are significant possibilities to reduce tire wear by adjusting the suspension kinematics.

Using the piezoelectric effect to harvest energy from surrounding vibrations is a promising alternative solution for powering small electronic devices such as wireless sensors and portable devices. A conventional piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) can only efficiently collect energy within a small range around the resonance frequency. To realize broadband vibration energy harvesting, the idea of multiple-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) PEH to realize multiple resonant frequencies within a certain range has been recently proposed and some preliminary research has validated its feasibility. Therefore, this paper proposed a multi-DOF wideband PEH based on the frequency interval shortening mechanism to realize five resonance frequencies close enough to each other. The PEH consists of five tip masses, two U-shaped cantilever beams and a straight beam, and tuning of the resonance frequencies is realized by specific parameter design. The electrical characteristics of the PEH are analyzed by simulation and experiment, validating that the PEH can effectively expand the operating bandwidth and collect vibration energy in the low frequency. Experimental results show that the PEH has five low-frequency resonant frequencies, which are 13, 15, 18, 21 and 24 Hz; under the action of 0.5 g acceleration, the maximum output power is 52.2, 49.4, 61.3, 39.2 and 32.1 μW, respectively. In view of the difference between the simulation and the experimental results, this paper conducted an error analysis and revealed that the material parameters and parasitic capacitance are important factors that affect the simulation results. Based on the analysis, the simulation is improved for better agreement with experiments.

A method for selecting dynamic parameters and structures of drive systems using the synthesis algorithm is presented. The dynamic parameters of the system with six degrees of freedom, consisting of a power component (motor) and a two-speed gearbox, were determined, based on a formalized methodology. The required gearbox is to work in specific resonance zones, i.e., meet the required dynamic properties such as the required resonance frequencies. In the result of the tests, a series of parameters of the drive system, defining the required dynamic properties such as the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies were recorded. Mass moments of inertia of the wheels and elastic components, contained in the required structure of the driving system, were determined for the selected parameters obtained during the synthesis.

An assumed strain approach for a linear triangular element able to handle finite deformation problems is presented in this paper. The element is based on a total Lagrangian formulation and its geometry is defined by three nodes with only translational degrees of freedom. The strains are computed from the metric tensor, which is interpolated linearly from the values obtained at the mid-side points of the element. The evaluation of the gradient at each side of the triangle is made resorting to the geometry of the adjacent elements, leading to a four element patch. The approach is then nonconforming, nevertheless the element passes the patch test. To deal with plasticity at finite deformations a logarithmic stress-strain pair is used where an additive decomposition of elastic and plastic strains is adopted. A hyper-elastic model for the elastic linear stress-strain relation and an isotropic quadratic yield function (Mises) for the plastic part are considered. The element has been implemented in two finite element codes: an implicit static/dynamic program for moderately non-linear problems and an explicit dynamic code for problems with strong nonlinearities. Several examples are shown to assess the behavior of the present element in linear plane stress states and non-linear plane strain states as well as in axi-symmetric problems.

This paper presents the design and development of an efficient modular ‘Computer Simulation Model (CSM)’ for response analysis of a moored semi-submersible. The computer simulation model is designed in two split models (i.e. computational and experimental models) and each of these models consists of various modules. The modules are developed from basic governing equations related to motion and modules are integrated and we aim for a seamless integration. The moored semi-submersible is represented mathematically as six degrees of freedom dynamic system and the coupling effects between the structure and mooring lines are considered. The basic geometric configuration of semi- submersible is modelled and analyzed for stability computations in MS-Excel*TM and then the basic governing equations related to motion are modelled mathematically in a module and solved numerically with Ansys-AQWA**TM. The computational model is validated and verified with some available experimental results. The CSM is utilized to study the surge and sway responses with respect to the horizontal range of mooring lines and our results show good validation with the existing experimental results. Our presented results show that the fibre wires have minimum steady state response in surge and sway degrees of freedom as compared with the steel wires. However, they have large drift as compared with steel wires. Finally, we show that the computer simulation model can help in detailed analysis of responses and results can be utilized for design and development of new age semi-submersibles for optimum performances for a given set of parameters.

Purpose This paper aims to develope a novel fractional hybrid impedance control (FHIC) approach for high-sensitive contact stress force tracking control of the series elastic muscle-tendon actuator (SEM-TA) in uncertain environments. Design/methodology/approach In three different cases, the fractional parameters of the FHIC were optimized with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Its adaptability to the pressure of the sole of the foot on real environments such as grass (soft), carpet (medium) and solid floors (hard) is far superior to traditional impedance control. The main aim of this paper is to derive the dynamic simulation models of the SEM-TA, to develop a control architecture allowing for high-sensitive contact stress force control in three cases and to verify the simulation models and the proposed controller with experimental results. The performance of the optimized controllers was evaluated according to these parameters, namely, maximum overshoot, steady-state error, settling time and root mean squared errors of the positions. Moreover, the frequency robustness analysis of the controllers was made in three cases. Findings Different simulations and experimental results were conducted to verify the control performance of the controllers. According to the comparative results of the performance, the responses of the proposed controller in simulation and experimental works are very similar. Abstract This paper presents the kinematics and dynamic modeling of a three-link (3-DOF) underwater manipulator where the effects of hydrodynamic forces are investigated. In our investigation, drag and added mass coefficients are not considered as constants. In contrast, the drag coefficient is a variable with respect to all relative parameters. Experiments were conducted to validate the hydrodynamic model for a one degree-of-freedom manipulator up to a three degrees-of-freedom manipulator. Finally, the numerical and experimental results are compared and thoroughly discussed.

Natural motion types found in skeletal and muscular systems of vertebrate animals inspire researchers to transfer this ability into engineered motion, which is highly desired in robotic systems. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promising capabilities as artificial muscles for driving such structures, as they are soft, lightweight, and can generate large strokes. For maximum performance, dielectric elastomer membranes need to be sufficiently pre-stretched. This fact is challenging, because it is difficult to integrate pre-stretched membranes into entirely soft systems, since the stored strain energy can significantly deform soft elements. Here, we present a soft robotic structure, possessing a bioinspired skeleton integrated into a soft body element, driven by an antagonistic pair of DEA artificial muscles, that enable the robot bending. In its equilibrium state, the setup maintains optimum isotropic pre-stretch. The robot itself has a length of 60 mm and is based on a flexible silicone body, possessing embedded transverse 3D printed struts. These rigid bone-like elements lead to an anisotropic bending stiffness, which only allows bending in one plane while maintaining the DEA's necessary pre-stretch in the other planes. The bones, therefore, define the degrees of freedom and stabilize the system. The DEAs are manufactured by aerosol deposition of a carbon-silicone-composite ink onto a stretchable membrane that is heat cured. Afterwards, the actuators are bonded to the top and bottom of the silicone body. The robotic structure shows large and defined bimorph bending curvature and operates in static as well as dynamic motion. Our experiments describe the influence of membrane pre-stretch and varied stiffness of the silicone body on the static and dynamic bending displacement, resonance frequencies and blocking forces. We also present an analytical model based on the Classical Laminate Theory for the identification of the main influencing parameters. Due to the simple design and processing, our new concept of a bioinspired DEA based robotic structure, with skeletal and muscular reinforcement, offers a wide range of robotic application.

A micro-machined manipulator with three kinematic degrees-of-freedom (DOF): x, y, and φ is presented. The manipulator is driven by three thermal actuators. A six DOF discrete spring-mass model of the compliant mechanism is developed which manifests the dynamic properties of the device. Numerical simulations are compared with experimental results.

Under launch impact load, LIGA nickel that manufacturing MEMS fuze safety and arming (S&A) device will have obvious strain rate effect. By using finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, simulation models of a small-caliber ammunition MEMS fuze setback S&A device with strain rate effect and without strain rate effect were respectively established. The results of the two simulation modules were quite different. Comparisons between experimental results and simulation results show that simulation results considering strain rate effect agree well with experimental results, which proves strain rate effect should not be ignored in the simulation of MEMS S&A device.
