ABET Alignment of Learning Resources in the Engineering Pathway Digital Library

The Engineering Pathway (EP) digital library (www.engineeringpathway.com) strives to provide quality educational resources for learners of all age levels. ABET Engineering Criteria has been the driving force behind modern engineering education reform since its introduction at the turn of the century. In order to help engineering educators and administrators meet the challenges of developing and teaching a learning outcomes-focused curriculum, EP is linking existing resources to appropriate ABET criteria. This paper summarizes the research behind using our ABET alignment process where computational linguistics and information retrieval tools are used to augment the ABET alignment process. Experts then review these recommendations and make corrections where needed. By taking this approach, we not only shorten the time to align existing learning resources; but also improve the scalability by aligning new resources as they are being submitted. The technologies can also be applied to the development of thesauri and recommender systems that can be tailored to individual faculty needs.

Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, Blow, bugle; answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. —from The Splendor Falls by Alfred, Lord Tennyson This is the story of the closure of a hospital and with it a part of American pediatric history. Children's Seashore House of Atlantic City is the nation's fourth oldest pediatric hospital. After 118 years, it will close in the summer of 1990 and move to a new facility in Philadelphia. The simple brick, layer-cake structure looks very tired now, its iconic soul having been steadily removed for incorporation into the new hospital. The cornerstone animals, lions and bighorn, have been chiseled free and now guard a new outpost. So too have the plaques from the turn of the century, optimistically commemorating the establishment of endowed beds, wards, and cottages "for perpetual use" with their benefactors of simplicity and gentleness by name, such as the "Endowed Bed of St James Sunday School, 1889" and "Endowed by the Everyday Kindness Society, 1912." On this day, the workers hammer to remove the final link—an enormous marble tablet from 1919 eulogizing Dr William Bennett, the principal driving force of Children's Seashore House and also the founder of St Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia. A mere 50 yards away, the Atlantic Ocean beats inexorably as it did at the founding in 1872, 2 years after the first planks were laid for the famous boardwalk.

This study aims to describe the types of learning resources used previously at SMA N 3 Salatiga, describe the feasibility of Biomagz Based on Local Wisdom, and test the effectiveness of Biomagz Based on Local Wisdom on learning outcomes and student’s environmental care attitude. The method used is research development (R & D). Products are validated by material and media validators, and revised before being tested. Small-scale trials (readability test) use 10 students from class X MIPA 1, while large-scale trials use class X MIPA 2 with the experimental design Pre-experimental Design with the type of Pre-test and Post-test One Group Design. The results of the study show the variety of learning resources used previously including biological, teacher, internet, biology books, and the environment around students. The Feasibility of Biomagz Based on Local Wisdom obtained an average score of 92.21% with very decent criteria. Large-scale trials with an average N-gain value 0.49 in the medium category, the average classical completeness is 85.29%, and the environment care attitude of students is based on the observation result of 92.9% with a high category and the result of the inter-student assessment is 86, 18% with a high category. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that Biomagz Based Local Wisdom is well worth and effective on learning outcomes and student’s environmental care attitude.


This book examines the politics of the learning crisis in the global South, where learning outcomes have stagnated or worsened, despite progress towards Universal Primary Education since the 1990s. Comparative analysis of education reform in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda highlights systemic failure on the frontline of education service delivery, driven by deeper crises of policymaking and implementation: few governments try to raise educational standards with any conviction, and education bureaucracies are unable to deliver even those learning reforms that get through the policy process. Introductory chapters develop a theoretical framework within which to examine the critical features of the politics of education. Case study chapters demonstrate that political settlements, or the balance of power between contending social groups, shape the extent to which elites commit to adopting and implementing reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes, and the nature this influence takes. Informal politics and power relations can generate incentives that undermine rather than support elite commitment to development, politicizing the provision of education. Tracing reform processes from their policy origins down to the frontline, it seems that successful schools emerged as localized solutions to specific solutions, often against the grain of dysfunctional sectoral arrangements and the national-level political settlement, but with local political backing. The book concludes with discussion of the need for more politically attuned approaches that focus on building coalitions for change and supporting ‘best-fit’ types of problem-solving fixes, rather than calling for systemic change.

The curriculum in Indonesia is currently curriculum 2013, especially  on the basic framework and structure of the vocational curriculum that states that the 2013 curriculum was developed with the improvement of mindset, among others:  educationthat focuses on teachers so focused on students, as well as passive learning so active learning. Therefore, as a teacher can develop the learning process, especially learning resources that are able to explore the ideas of students into an innovative and critical so that they can produce and solve theirown problems,through problem-based LKPD  learning. This method and type of research is a development study with a 4-Dmodelby Thiagarajan and Semmel. The findings in this study are the use of problem-based learning-based LKPD   and the response of students who were found to be positive or good

This study aimed to analyze various ICT-based media and learning resources used in learning Arabic, the selection or development process, the process of using it in learning, and the learning outcomes. Research data collected from observations, documentation, and interviews were validated with FGD and analyzed with interactive models. The results of this study show that; (1) the most widely used media in learning Arabic is powerpoint presentations with LCD and language laboratories, then video, audio and games, (2) the process of selecting developing media and learning resources is done by design and by utilization, (3) the process of utilizing media and learning resources is done more for the delivery of material at the core activities in addition to enrichment and assignment, and (4) media and learning resources for Arabic-based ICT that use material from native speakers have a positive impact on improving the motivation, self confidence, and Arabic competence of students.

Abstract This study aims to determine the completeness of the relationship of learning resources with improved learning outcomes, and the degree of closeness of the relationship between the completeness of the learning resources with improved learning outcomes of economic subjects in class X second semester. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative method. Where a population of 397 students. The sample in this study as many as 38 students were given a test in the form of 20 multiple-choice questions to determine student learning outcomes and questionnaires to determine the relationship of the completeness of the source of student learning. Testing the hypothesis in this study using product moment correlation test. Based on the results of hypothesis testing that has been done with the author, obtained = 0.645 greater than rdaf at the level of 5% with N = 38 is 0.320 (statistics table) this means. Namely 0.645> 0.320, which means that there is a relationship completeness of learning resources with the results of the economic study in grade x second semester. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui Hubungan kelengkapan sumber belajar dengan peningkatan hasil belajar, dan tingkat keeratan antara hubungan kelengkapan sumber belajar dengan peningkatan hasil belajar mata pelajaran ekonomi pada siswa kelas X semester genap. Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Dimana populasi sebanyak 397 siswa. Sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 38 siswa diberikan tes dalam bentuk pilihan ganda sebanyak 20 soal untuk mengetahui hasil belajar siswa dan angket untuk mengetahui hubungan kelengkapan sumber belajar siswa. Pengujian hipotesis dalam penelitian ini menggunakan uji korelasi product moment. Berdasarkan hasil pengujian hipotesis yang telah dilakukan penulis, di peroleh = 0,645 lebih besar dari rdaf pada taraf 5% dengan N = 38 yaitu 0,320 (tabel statistik) hal ini berarti . Yaitu 0,645 > 0,320 yang berarti bahwa ada hubungan kelengkapan sumber belajar dengan hasil belajar ekonomi pada siswa kelas x semester genap. One of the most important tasks of a librarian is the assignment of appropriate subject(s) to a resource within a library’s collection. The subjects usually belong to a controlled vocabulary that is specifically designed for such a task. The most widely adopted controlled vocabulary across libraries around the world is the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). However, there seems to be a shifting from traditional LCSH to modern thesauri. In this paper, a methodology is proposed, capable of incorporating thesauri into existing LCSH-based Information Retrieval–IR systems. In order to achieve this, a mapping methodology is proposed capable of providing a common structure consisting of terms belonging to LCSH and/or a thesaurus. The structure is modeled as a Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) ontology, which can be employed by appropriate subject-based IR systems. As a proof of concept, the proposed methodology is applied to the DSpace-based University of Piraeus digital library.

Structural and semantic interoperability have been the focus of digital library research in the early 1990s. Many research works have been done on searching and retrieving objects across variations in protocols, formats, and disciplines. As the World Wide Web has become more popular in the last ten years, information is available in multiple languages in global digital libraries. Users are searching across the language boundary to identify the relevant information that may not be available in their own language. Cross-lingual semantic interoperability has become one of the focuses in digital library research in the late 1990s. In particular, research in cross-lingual information retrieval (CLIR) has been very active in recent conferences on information retrieval, digital libraries, knowledge management, and information systems. The major problem in CLIR is how to build the bridge between the representations of user queries and documents if they are of different languages.

This chapter introduces a new category of digital library user interfaces called metadata-enhanced visual interfaces. Drawing on the earlier information retrieval visual interfaces that have made use of thesauri, this chapter will review and analyze metadata-enhanced visual interfaces to digital libraries based on two key variables, namely metadata elements used for visualization purposes and visual metaphors incorporated into the user interfaces. The aim of this study is to inform the design of visual interfaces for digital libraries through bringing together issues that have roots in such communities as information retrieval, digital libraries, human-computer interaction, and metadata. The findings of this study provide design ideas and implications for digital library interface design in terms of the various metadata-based information search and retrieval features for visualization purposes.
