Locomotive Studies Utilizing Multibody and Train Dynamics

Locomotive traction studies have been extensively performed in multi-body software packages. Generally, these research activities have been focused on purely mechanical system design issues and, as a result, there is a limited amount of information available on modeling locomotives under the influence of traction/braking capabilities and train dynamics. Evidence of using results from longitudinal train dynamics simulations as input to locomotive dynamics simulations has also been limited and information on this is rarely presented in the public domain. This means that locomotive traction/braking studies are commonly focused on the dynamics of an individual locomotive and are limited in terms of implementation of intrain forces. Recent progress shows some activities involving the application of approximations of lateral coupler forces to replicate a locomotive’s dynamics on the track. However, such an approach has its own limitations and does not fully depict the real behavior of locomotives. At this stage, the optimal technique capable of covering all locomotive behavior issues when traveling in a train configuration is to use a co-simulation approach between a multibody software package and a train dynamics code. This paper describes a methodology for the development of such a technique and presents numerical experiments for locomotive dynamics studies. The results obtained from co-simulation runs for three heavy haul locomotives in a head-end consist, taking into account in-train forces and speeds, are discussed along with limitations found during the development process.

The locomotive coupling came from the development of heavy-haul transportation in railway. Considering the insufficiencies of cable and radio in locomotive coupling at present, a new method of locomotive coupling is presented in this paper. The overall design of system scheme is provided based on WLAN. The system feasibility is analyzed and verified by using OPNET Modeler. The hardware structure of coupling transmission device and development process of embedded operating system are described briefly. Finally, taking measures guarantees the system reliability of data transmission.

Crowdsourcing is an important form for enterprises to realize open innovation, which can gather the wisdom of the public and gather talents from various fields to participate in technological innovation and value creation. This paper systematically reviews the emergence and development of crowdsourcing in China, analyzes the causes and characteristics of the four stages of crowdsourcing development with the clue of major events in the development process of crowdsourcing; takes the operation process of crowdsourcing as the breakthrough point, discusses the bidirectional driving optimization path for the benign rolling development of crowdsourcing mode under the background of “mass entrepreneurship and innovation”; and prospects. Finally, the future development direction of crowdsourcing mode is pointed out.

<p>The role that the physical environment of an exhibition plays in the visitor's experience of a museum is a topic that, though increasingly acknowledged in museum studies, has not yet received detailed attention from researchers. The interaction of exhibitor and visitor, in and through exhibitions, can be situated in the wider context of the recent paradigm shirt within museum practice, towards communication with the public and developments in museum theory, which consider the qualitative aspects of the visitor experience as an active dialogue, conversation or a process of meaning-making. This dissertation examines the interactive exhibit Stowaways in the permanent exhibition, Blood, Earth, Fire - Whāngai, Whenua, Ahi Kā, at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. It considers the question 'How does the physical environment affect the meanings that the visitor makes in and after visiting the exhibition?' The study builds on existing New Zealand research, which questioned the gap between exhibition creation and visitor reception. A theoretical framework was constructed from relevant strands of the literature of museum studies, visitor studies and exhibition design. A qualitative approach was employed, in order to examine in detail both the exhibition development process and then how the visitor responded to the exhibition. Several methods were used to conduct the research, such as archival research and interviews with both the museum staff and seven visitors, who came with their families to the exhibit. The findings provide interesting evidence of the complex and deep affect that the built exhibition space can have on the visitor, not just at the time of the visit but long afterwards. This was an affect that rippled out from the individual to their family group and everyday life. This dissertation makes a small but significant contribution to museum studies in New Zealand, through an integrated examination of the production and reception of a museum exhibit, from the perspective of both the visitor and the museum. One of the main conclusions was to re-iterate the important role of exhibition evaluation in facilitating a more complete communication between museum and visitor, by allowing museum professionals to build on the experience of the development process in a way that can inform future practice.</p>

After being an economic backwater, the southeastern Austrian border region enjoys economic boom today. The decisive factor for the turnaround was a regional development process that had its first steps in 1995. The region was suffering from low education, had the national lowest income rate, no industrial development, no infrastructure, little self-esteem and a lack of job opportunity. The initiators of the project were thinking of a different way of measuring progress and started imagining a future built on different standards. Due to profound research activities, the initiators came to the conclusion that mega projects won’t entail sustainable solutions or future-competence. Hence, they turned their focus to their habitat – their region. To in-valuate the living space, a new identity that was representative, gained recognition and reinforced the peoples self-confidence. In 2001 the new identity ‘Steirisches Vulkanland’ was born. The vision throughout the entire development process was to transform the border region with little chances into an innovative, worth living region ‘Steirisches Vulkanland’ within a period of 15 years. In 2010 their vision seems to be achieved, 79 municipalities together promote successfully local, green, self-sustaining businesses. Yet, the development process is still going on, heading for new, courageous, challenging visions like achieving energy independence by the year 2025.

: The ongoing pandemic of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), has created a major challenge for the public health worldwide. The reported cases indicate the outbreak is more widespread than initially assumed. Around 18 million people have been infected with 689,000 reported deaths (August 2020; number is increasing daily) by this novel coronavirus, with a high mutation rate this poses even more serious threat worldwide. The actual source of COVID-19 is still unclear, even if the initial reports links it to the Chinese seafood wet markets in Wuhan, other animals such as birds, snakes, and many small mammals including bats are also linked with this novel coronavirus. Structure of the COVID-19 shows distinctive proteins among which, spike proteins have a pivotal role in host cell attachment and virus-cell membrane fusion in order to facilitate virus infection. Currently, no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine is available. Various drug candidates including SARS‐CoV and MERS‐CoV protease inhibitors, neuraminidase inhibitors, RNA synthesis inhibitors, ACE2 inhibitors and lungs supportive therapy are on the trail. Cell-based therapy also appeared with remarkable treatment possibilities. In this article, we endeavored to succinctly cover the current and available treatment options including pharmaceuticals, cell-based therapy, and traditional medicine. We also focused on the extent of damages by this novel coronavirus in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the strategies adopted and the research activities initiated so far by these densely populated countries (neighboring China) are explained in this review.

The protection of intellectual property (IP) is a crucial area to support the development process of any country, as it is in this context that the biggest strategic disputes are taking place. In recent years Brazil has developed some actions to achieve greater efficiency in the public IP management system, but are we on the right track? The present study seeks to present answers regarding the performance of Brazil and to highlight the advances and challenges regarding the IP system. The methodological approach was structured based on a review in the literature, highlighting the scientific, economic and technological indicators on the development of IP and the main IP objects registered with the Brazilian national intellectual property body (INPI) in the period of 2013 to 2016, in the areas of patents, trademarks, industrial design, computer program, circuit topography, technology contracts and geographical indication.

Scientific evidence spanning experimental and epidemiologic studies has shown that air pollution exposures can lead to a range of health effects. Quantitative approaches that allow for the estimation of the adverse health impacts attributed to air pollution enable researchers and policy analysts to convey the public health impact of poor air quality. Multiple tools are currently available to conduct such analyses, which includes software packages designed by the World Health Organization (WHO): AirQ+, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA): Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program—Community Edition (BenMAP—CE), to quantify the number and economic value of air pollution-attributable premature deaths and illnesses. WHO’s AirQ+ and U.S. EPA’s BenMAP—CE are among the most popular tools to quantify these effects as reflected by the hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and technical reports over the past two decades that have employed these tools spanning many countries and multiple continents. Within this paper we conduct an analysis using common input parameters to compare AirQ+ and BenMAP—CE and show that the two software packages well align in the calculation of health impacts. Additionally, we detail the research questions best addressed by each tool.

Wildlife researchers and conservation biologists are encountering growing research difficulties due to strong and effective advocacy of animal welfare concerns. However, collecting information on the basic biology of animals, which is often essential to effective conservation and management, frequently involves invasive research. The latter is unacceptable to some animal welfare advocates, even if it ultimately leads to better conservation outcomes. For effective biodiversity conservation it is imperative that conservation and wildlife researchers lucidly present the case for their research on individual animals. This requires conservation biologists and the research community in general, to present these arguments in the public domain as well as in peer-reviewed literature. Moreover, it is important to measure how these activities affect animals. Only then can we show that high quality research activities often have little or no effects on animal vital rates and performance.

The Hardware in the Loop simulation is an useful instrument to simulate complex mechanical systems in which the subject of the test is an hardware component. The results of the simulation, closer to the real behavior of the system, are the main advantage of this approach. This application is often used during the design process to test components of a complex mechanical system before the development of the prototype (e.g. embedded systems). The literature examples show, in general, mathematical model finalized to the application. The objective of this work is focused on the development of a generic Multi-Body software for HIL applications. Some simulations examples, the dynamic of a slider-crank and of a McPherson suspension, are presented at the end of the paper.

AbstractThe Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) consortium has designed a universal application programming interface (API) to make materials databases accessible and interoperable. We outline the first stable release of the specification, v1.0, which is already supported by many leading databases and several software packages. We illustrate the advantages of the OPTIMADE API through worked examples on each of the public materials databases that support the full API specification.
