BackgroundOptimal functioning of the lower extremities under repeated movements on unstable surfaces is essential for military effectiveness. Intervention training to promote proprioceptive ability should be considered in order to limit the risk for musculoskeletal injuries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a proprioceptive intervention programme on static and dynamic postural balance among Israel Defense Forces combat soldiers.MethodsTwenty-seven male soldiers, aged 18–20 years, from a physical fitness instructor’s course, were randomly divided into two groups matched by age and army unit. The intervention group (INT) underwent 4 weeks of proprioceptive exercises for 10 min daily; the control group underwent 4 weeks of upper body stretching exercises for 10 min daily. All participants were tested pre and postintervention for both static and dynamic postural balance.ResultsSignificant interaction (condition*pre-post-test*group) was found for static postural balance, indicating that for the INT group, in condition 3 (on an unstable surface—BOSU), the post-test result was significantly better compared with the pretest result (p<0.05). Following intervention, the INT group showed significant correlations between static postural stability in condition 2 (eyes closed) and the dynamic postural stability (length of time walked on the beam following fatigue) (r ranged from 0.647 to 0.822; p<0.05).ConclusionsThe proprioceptive intervention programme for combat soldiers improved static postural balance on unstable surfaces, and improved the correlation between static postural balance in the eyes closed condition and dynamic postural balance following fatigue. Further longitudinal studies are needed to verify the relationship between proprioception programmes, additional weight bearing and the reduction of subsequent injuries in combat soldiers.

The main aim of this study was to find out if exercise with elastic cord improved postural stability in a experimental group. Postural stability was measured by electronic balancing board with variable radius and integrated feedback. The exercise regimen was undertaken twice a week for 3 months. All participants were measured at the beginning of the study and then after 3 months. Participants had to stand on the electronic balance board during 30 seconds with open eyes and kept the board balanced using feedback from the screen. The results were expressed by number from 0 to 100. Twenty-nine elite gymnasts volunteered for this study. Participants did not report any neuromusculoskeletal injuries or other diseases that may affect balance performance. Before participating in the study, all parents of gymnasts read and signed the informed consent form. The participants were assigned to a control group (15 girls; mean age = 13.78±1.62 years; mean height = 1.57±0.09 m; mean mass = 46.16±8.71 kg) and experimental group (14 girls; mean age =14.1±2.0 years; mean height =1.56±0.08 m; mean mass = 45.6±10.55 kg). The total number of time spending in training was 18 hours per week. Experimental group performed 2 hours plus of exercise with elastic cord. One of the aims of the study was to decide if the differences between pre-test and post-test in experimental group will occur. The paired samples t-test was used (p=0.006578; the significance level 95%). The intervention programme with elastic cord improved postural stability in a group of elite gymnasts.

Abstract Background Flatfoot subjects presents an increase plantar foot area related to a plantar pressure feedback impairment. The Lyapunov Exponent is considered a nonlinear parameter used to characterize a signal chaotic behavior measuring the information rate loss from time series, i.e., for the Center of Pressure data. This exponent is used to quantify and measure the capability and resistance of subjects to several perturbations. The study purpose was to investigate the postural stability differences among foot posture condition through the Lyapunov Exponent analysis. Methods The sample of the observation descriptive study consisted of 31 participants (23.26 yo ± 4.43 SD) comprising a total of 62 feet, where 15 integrated into the experimental group with bilateral flatfoot condition and the remaining 16 in the control group with the bilateral neutral foot condition. Subjects were screened, before posture analysis, using the Navicular Drop Test and Resting Calcaneal Stance Position test, to characterize each group. All participants were subjected to a bipedal weight-bearing stance posture stability analysis a force platform, both in eyes-open and closed condition. The Lyapunov Exponent was calculated using the Matlab-R2020b (MathWorks Inc., USA) software. Results Regarding the Center of Pressure outcomes, only the Lyapunov Exponent value upon the Antero-Posterior component regarding groups in the eyes closed condition (diff = 3.09°, p = .016) presented a significant result. Conclusion Flatfoot subjects present a significant difference compared to neutral foot participants, in bipedal weight-bearing stance, in the eyes closed condition regarding the Lyapunov Exponent. This relates to increase variability and decrease stability regarding the Antero-Posterior component.

There are many reasons for postural disorder development, but dysfunction of the cervical spine muscles is the most disputable reason. The purpose of the study is to reveal the influence of latent myogenic trigger zones of the cervical muscles on postural resistance. Materials and Methods. The authors used the method of computer posturography. Latent myogenic trigger zones (LMTZs) were determined by an indurated nodule or bundle in the neck muscle and by hyperesthesia in this zona. Assessment of postural resistance in subjects with LMTZs was carried out using standard posturography tests and Romberg test. Both classical and vector indicators were evaluated in a standard sample. Results. In fact, only vector indicators changed significantly in subjects with multiple LMTZs (4 or more). Thus, a decrease in the equilibrium function quality was established, as well as an increase in the average linear velocity of the pressure center and an increase in the normalized vectorogram area if compared with the indices in the control group and the group with sporadic LMTZs (from 1 to 3). The obtained results indicate a postural control decrease in individuals with multiple LMTZs. Subjects with sporadic LMTZs demonstrated a significant decrease in classical and a number of vector indicators, which shows the improvement in postural resistance in this test group. In Romberg test, all subjects with LMTZs, regardless of the zone number, showed an increasd Romberg coefficient. Conclusion. Multiple LMTZs of cervical muscles can reduce postural stability through increased afferentation from the cervical proprioreceptors. It is more obvious during in case of eye control elimination. Keywords: latent myogenic trigger points, postural control, posturography, Romberg test.

Abstract Background We aimed to determine the effectiveness of 4 weeks of balance exercise compared with no intervention on objectively measured postural sway. Methods This was a single-center parallel randomized controlled, open label, trial. A six-sided dice was used for allocation at a 1:1-ratio between exercise and control. The trial was performed at a university hospital clinic in Sweden and recruited community-dwelling older adults with documented postural instability. The intervention consisted of progressively challenging balance exercise three times per week, during 4 weeks, with follow-up at week five. Main outcome measures were objective postural sway length during eyes open and eyes closed conditions. Results Sixty-five participants aged 70 years (balance exercise n = 32; no intervention n = 33) were randomized. 14 participants were excluded from analysis because of early dropout before follow-up at week five, leaving 51 (n = 22; n = 29) participants for analysis. No significant differences were detected between the groups in any of the postural sway outcomes. Within-group analyses showed significant improvements in hand grip strength for the intervention group, while Timed Up & Go improvements were comparable between groups but only statistically significant in the control group. Conclusions Performing balance exercise over a four-week intervention period did not acutely improve postural sway in balance-deficient older adults. The lower limit in duration and frequency to achieve positive effects remains unclear. Trial registration Clinical trials NCT03227666, July 24, 2017, retrospectively registered.

Abstract Background Almost one-third of children under 5 years old in Indonesia suffer from stunting. Stunting can be prevented optimally during pregnancy as the initial phase of the first 1000 days of life. This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition and reproductive health education of pregnant women in Bogor Regency, Indonesia. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 194 pregnant women from August to November 2019. The pregnant women were randomly selected from four different villages in Bogor Regency. The intervention group (n = 97) received 2 h of nutrition and reproductive health education in small groups (four or five mothers per group) every 2 weeks for 3 consecutive months. This interactive education was given by facilitators using techniques such as lectures, role-playing, simulation, and games. The control group (n = 97) received regular health care services. A structured questionnaire was applied to collect data consisting of maternal characteristics, nutritional and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the intervention and control groups. Data were analysed using t-test and chi-square analysis. Results Pregnant women in the intervention group indicated a significant increase in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding nutrition and reproductive health after receiving education. The pre-test and post-test mean scores in the intervention group were 55.1 and 83.1 for overall knowledge, 40.2 and 49.0 for attitudes, and 36.2 and 40.2 for practices, respectively. In the control group, there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores for these three variables. There was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the post-test mean between the intervention group and the control group, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05) in the pre-test. Conclusion Providing nutrition and reproductive health education through small groups with interactive methods improves the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women. This intervention has the potential to be replicated and developed for large-scale implementation by optimising collaboration between government, non-governmental organizations, and maternal and child health service providers.

Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a weight-bearing joint disease and is more common in overweight and obese persons. The objective of this study was to determine the role of rehabilitation exercises (REs) of lower limbs on weight, functional strength, and exercise adherence in overweight and obese knee OA patients. Materials And Method: The patients were recruited from the Urban community of Lahore, Pakistan. The patients were divided into the rehabilitation group (RG) and control group (CG). The patients in the RG performed the REs of lower limbs and followed the instructions of daily care (IDC), while the patients in the CG only followed the IDC for 12 weeks. Outcome measures were assessed at pre-test before grouping and post-test after 12-weeks of interventions. The measures included: weight, functional strength, and exercise adherence. The Paired Samples t-test (for the normally distributed data) and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test (for the data that was not normally distributed) were used to analyze the differences within groups from pre to post-test measurements. The analysis of variance 2 × 2 factors and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used to analyze the difference of weight and functional strength respectively between the groups. Results: The patients in the RG reported a statistically significant weight reduction (p < 0.001) and improvement in the functional strength (p < 0.001) within the group. Similarly, the patients in the CG also reported a significant improvement in the scores of functional strength (p = 0.004) within the group. The improvement in the scores of functional strength was greater in the patients of RG than the CG (p < 0.001. Similarly, the patients in the RG reported a statistically significant reduction in weight than the CG (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The REs could improve weight, functional strength and exercise adherence.
