Antibacterial effect of silver nanofilm modified stainless steel surface

Bacteria can attach to stainless steel surfaces, resulting in the colonization of the surface known as biofilms. The release of bacteria from biofilms can cause contamination of food such as dairy products in manufacturing plants. This study aimed to modify stainless steel surfaces with silver nanofilms and to examine the antibacterial effectiveness of the modified surface. Ion implantation was applied to produce silver nanofilms on stainless steel surfaces. 35 keV Ag ions were implanted with various fluences of 1 × 1015 to 1 × 1017 ions•cm-2 at room temperature. Representative atomic force microscopy characterizations of the modified stainless steel are presented. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry spectra revealed the implanted atoms were located in the near-surface region. Both unmodified and modified stainless steel coupons were then exposed to two types of bacteria, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Streptococcus thermophilus, to determine the effect of the surface modification on bacterial attachment and biofilm development. The silver modified coupon surface fluoresced red over most of the surface area implying that most bacteria on coupon surface were dead. This study indicates that the silver nanofilm fabricated by the ion implantation method is a promising way of reducing the attachment of bacteria and delay biofilm formation.

The degradation of steam generator tubing at nuclear power plants has become an important problem for the electric utilities generating nuclear power. The material used for the tubing, Inconel 600, has been found to be succeptible to intergranular attack (IGA). IGA is the selective dissolution of material along its grain boundaries. The author believes that the sensitivity of Inconel 600 to IGA can be minimized by homogenizing the near-surface region using ion implantation. The collisions between the implanted ions and the atoms in the grain boundary region would displace the atoms and thus effectively smear the grain boundary.To determine the validity of this hypothesis, an Inconel 600 sample was implanted with 100kV N2+ ions to a dose of 1x1016 ions/cm2 and electrolytically etched in a 5% Nital solution at 5V for 20 seconds. The etched sample was then examined using a JEOL JSM25S scanning electron microscope.

To satisfy the harsh service demand of stainless steel and aviation bearing steel, the anticorrosion and wettability behaviors of 9Cr18 stainless steel and M50 bearing steel tailored by ion beam surface modification technology were experimentally investigated. By controlling the ion implantation (F+, N+, N+ + Ti+) or deposition processes, different surface-modified layers and ceramic layers or composite layers with both effects (ion implantation and deposition processes) were obtained on metal surfaces. The wettability was characterized by a contact angle instrument, and the thermodynamics stabilization of ion implantation-treated metals in corrosive solution was evaluated through an electrochemical technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed for detecting the chemical bonding states of the implanted elements. The results indicated that ion implantation or deposition-induced surface-modified layers or coating layers could increase water contact angles, namely improving hydrophobicity as well as thermodynamic stabilization in corrosive medium. Meanwhile, wettability with lubricant oil was almost not changed. The implanted elements could induce the formation of new phases in the near-surface region of metals, and the wettability behaviors were closely related to the as-formed ceramic components and amorphous sublayer.

Bacterial attachment on solid surfaces and subsequent biofilm formation is a significant problem in the food industry. Superhydrophobic surfaces have potential to prevent bacterial adhesion by minimizing the contact area between bacterial cells and the surface. In this study, stainless steel-based superhydrophobic surfaces were fabricated by manipulating nanostructures with electrochemical etching and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film. The formation of nanostructures on stainless steel surfaces was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The stainless steel surfaces etched at 10 V for 5 min and at 10 V for 10 min with PTFE deposition resulted in average water contact angles of 154° ±4° with pore diameters of 50 nm. In addition, adhesion of Listeria monocytogenes was decreased by up to 99% compared to the bare substrate. These findings demonstrate the potential for the development of antibacterial surfaces by combining nanoporous patterns with PTFE films. A study was conducted to determine the effects of three commercially available disinfectants on the reduction of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris spores in single-strength apple juice applied to stainless steel surfaces. Apple juice was inoculated with A. acidoterrestris spores, spread onto the surface of stainless steel chips (SSC), dried to obtain spore concentrations of approximately 104 CFU/cm2, and treated with disinfectants at temperatures ranging from 40 to 90°C. The concentrations of disinfectants were 200, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 ppm of total chlorine for Clorox (CL) (sodium hypochlorite); 50, 100, and 200 ppm of total chlorine for Carnebon 200 (stabilized chlorine dioxide); and 1,500, 2,000, and 2,600 ppm for Vortexx (VOR) (hydrogen peroxide, peroxyacetic acid, and octanoic acid). For all temperatures tested, VOR at 2,600 ppm (90°C) and CL at 2,000 ppm (90°C) were the most inhibitory against A. acidoterrestris spores, resulting in 2.55- and 2.32-log CFU/cm2 reductions, respectively, after 2 min. All disinfectants and conditions tested resulted in the inactivation of A. acidoterrestris spores, with a maximum reduction of >2 log CFU/cm2. Results from this study indicate that A. acidoterrestris spores, in single-strength apple juice, may be effectively reduced on stainless steel surface by VOR and CL, which may have practical applications in the juice industry.

In this study, Ti + N ion implantation was used as a surface modification method for surface hardening and friction-reducing properties of Cronidur30 bearing steel. The structural modification and newly-formed ceramic phases induced by the ion implantation processes were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). The mechanical properties of the samples were tested by nanoindentation and friction experiments. The surface nanohardness was also improved significantly, changing from ~10.5 GPa (pristine substrate) to ~14.2 GPa (Ti + N implanted sample). The friction coefficient of Ti + N ion implanted samples was greatly reduced before failure, which is less than one third of pristine samples. Furthermore, the TEM analyses confirmed a trilamellar structure at the near-surface region, in which amorphous/ceramic nanocrystalline phases were embedded into the implanted layers. The combined structural modification and hardening ceramic phases played a crucial role in improving surface properties, and the variations in these two factors determined the differences in the mechanical properties of the samples.

ABSTRACTPhysical and structural property changes resulting from ion implantation and thermal annealing of α-A12O3 are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on damage production during implantation, damage recovery during thermal annealing, and impurity incorporation during thermal annealing. Physical and structural property changes caused by ion implantation and annealing are correlated with changes in the mechanical properties.

Use of modern dairy food processing equipment creates a complex microenvironment. Closed systems reduce air drying. The rate and extent of drying are dependent on temperature and humidity of the environment. These factors were studied to determine their impact on the microflora of films of milk on stainless steel surfaces. An ecosystem was established to simulate dairy food equipment by using 1cm2 pieces of stainless steel in controlled humidity chambers. Presoiling water loss from a film of milk, and solute concentration were studied to determine their influence on the fate of the microflora. Temperature and humidity of the atmosphere influenced the rate of moisture loss from films. Pre-soiling reduced the rate of water loss from films of milk sufficiently to allow bacterial growth at 12–80% relative humidity (RH). Results indicate bacteria can grow in a film placed in humidities well below the 95% RH limit previously projected. Apparently the substrate is influenced by interaction of the milk film and the stainless steel surface.

AbstractIn the present work, the influence of surface roughness on oxidation kinetics of AISI 316Ti stainless steel and its consequences in term of oxidation resistance were investigated. Namely, the effect of surface roughness on oxidation resistance was evaluated during different types of cyclic oxidation tests at 900 and 1000 °C. The obtained results revealed that alloy possessing higher surface roughness showed longer lifetime compared to that with lower surface roughness. It was also found that more severe cyclic conditions suppressed the positive effect of surface roughness on sample’s lifetime. The better oxidation resistance of rougher alloy was correlated with suppressed formation of Fe-rich nodules on ground surfaces and explained by the combined effect of introduced defects in the near-surface region and possible increase in residual stresses caused by mechanical surface preparation.

Attachment of Yersinia enterocolitica to stainless steel surfaces at 35, 21, and 10°C was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cells adhered at all three temperatures, but, in general, the greatest number of adhered cells were observed at pH 8 and 21°C. Multi-flagellated cells were noted under these growth conditions. When grown at pH 9.5 and 21°C, fibrils were observed between cells and extending to the stainless steel surface. Fewer cells with flagella were seen at this pH. Adherence may be related to the flagella and any exopolymer surrounding the cells.
