A new low-cost electronic control circuit actuator is proposed for minimizing the bouncing times of an AC permanent magnet (PM) contactor after two contacts closing. The proposed new actuator overcomes the bouncing problem of an uncontrollable restrictions imposed by previously conventional AC electromagnetic (EM) contactor based on the minimization of kinetic energy prior to two contacts impact. By choosing the closing phase angle of coil voltage on purpose, the bouncing problems of the movable contact during the closing process are then overcome. The using life of contacts is then prolonged and their operating reliability is improved as well. In order to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method here, several simulation and experimental procedures were performed on a prototype of AC PM contactor in the laboratory. Testing results actually showed that bouncing problem of contactor's contacts during the closing process was to be controlled by using the proposed technology.

In this paper, a novel dual-stator permanent magnet machine (DsPmSynM) with low cost and high torque density is designed. The winding part of the DsPmSynM adopts phase-group concentrated-coil windings, and the permanent magnets are arranged by spoke-type. Firstly, the winding structure reduces the amount of copper at the end of the winding. Secondly, the electromagnetic torque ripple of DsPmSynM is suppressed by reducing the cogging torque. Furthermore, the dynamic performance of DsPmSynM is studied. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the simulation results.

A new control system of a hand gesture-controlled wheelchair (EWC) is proposed. This smart control device is suitable for a large number of patients who cannot manipulate a standard joystick wheelchair. The movement control system uses a camera fixed on the wheelchair. The patient’s hand movements are recognized using a visual recognition algorithm and artificial intelligence software; the derived corresponding signals are thus used to control the EWC in real time. One of the main features of this control technique is that it allows the patient to drive the wheelchair with a variable speed similar to that of a standard joystick. The designed device “hand gesture-controlled wheelchair” is performed at low cost and has been tested on real patients and exhibits good results. Before testing the proposed control device, we have created a three-dimensional environment simulator to test its performances with extreme security. These tests were performed on real patients with diverse hand pathologies in Mohamed Kassab National Institute of Orthopedics, Physical and Functional Rehabilitation Hospital of Tunis, and the validity of this intelligent control system had been proved.

AbstractIn this paper we investigate the control of three-dimensional non-autonomous fractional-order uncertain model of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) via a adaptive control technique. We derive a dimensionless fractional order model of the PMSM from the integer order presented in the literatures. Various dynamic properties of the fractional order model like eigen values, Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation and bicoherence are investigated. The system chaotic behavior for various orders of fractional calculus are presented. An adaptive controller is derived to suppress the chaotic oscillations of the fractional order model. As the direct Lyapunov stability analysis of the robust controller is difficult for a fractional order first derivative, we have derived a new lemma to analyze the stability of the system. Numerical simulations of the proposed chaos suppression methodology are given to prove the analytical results derived through which we show that for the derived adaptive controller and the parameter update law, the origin of the system for any bounded initial conditions is asymptotically stable.

Some of the most recent developments in reconfigurable reflectarrays using surface-mounted RF-MEMS, which have been developed at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, are summarized in this paper. The results include reconfigurable elements based on patches aperture-coupled to delay lines in two configurations: single elements and gathered elements which form subarrays with common phase control. The former include traditional aperture-coupled elements and a novel wideband reflectarray element which has been designed using two stacked patches. The latter are proposed as a low cost solution for reducing the number of electronic control devices as well as the manufacturing complexity of large reflectarrays. The main advantages and drawbacks of the grouping are evaluated in both pencil and shaped-beam antennas. In all the cases, the effects of the MEMS switches and their assembly circuitry are evaluated when they are used in a 2-bit phase shifter which can be extended to more bits, demonstrating that the proposed elements can be used efficiently in reconfigurable-beam reflectarrays.

The requirements of the modern automotive petrol engine in relation to higher specific power outputs while retaining good driveability and satisfying the impending exhaust emission control regulations, motivated an investigation into the potential of petrol injection. Consideration of the control requirements and accuracy necessary led, at an early stage, to the selection of electronic control on the basis of control capability, long term reliability, relatively low cost and the potential for future development. The fuel system was designed round the electronic control, manifold injection being used instead of direct injection on the basis of simplicity, lower cost and greater installation flexibility. The original system concept has changed only in detail, development effort being applied to the refinement of the system components to achieve a high standard of performance and the facility to apply the system with minimal modification to a wide range of engine types. The system is described in some detail and typical examples of the system performance on vehicles are presented.

Matrix converter is an AC-AC direct power converter comprising of an array of bi-directional switches. It does not require an intermediate DC-link and allows sinusoidal output waveforms with varying amplitudes and frequencies. The configuration of these bi-directional switches decides the number of inputs and outputs of the matrix converter. This research uses a direct matrix converter (DMC) as a phase-changing device that can convert a three-phase AC voltage into a 5-phase AC voltage. The DMC is modulated with the model predictive control algorithm. The output of DMC is fed to a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The model predictive current control technique for DMC is carried out by developing a mathematical model of an input filter and PM motor used as a load. The predictive control of DMC results in sinusoidal output current, and it also enables the frequency variation in the output current. This frequency variation is useful in controlling the speed of the motor connected to the load. After controlling the 5-phase motor, the switching frequency regulation is done to observe its effect on the motor's stator current waveforms. Switching frequency regulation helps to limit the unnecessary switching of DMC. We developed a MATLAB-based Simulink model to study PMSM, and detailed results are presented. The results show that switching regulation can significantly reduce the switching frequency without compromising the current waveform quality.
