Directional ultrawideband (UWB) antennas are popular in wireless signal-tracking and body-area networks. This paper presents a stacked microstrip antenna with an ultrawide impedance bandwidth of 114%, implemented by introducing defects on the radiating patches and the ground plane. The compact (20×34 mm) antenna exhibits a directive radiation patterns for all frequencies of the 3–10.6 GHz band. The optimized reflection response and the radiation pattern are experimentally verified. The designed UWB antenna is used to maximize the received power of a software-defined radio (SDR) platform. For an ultrawideband impulse radio system, this class of antennas is essential to improve the performance of the communication channels.

A compact CPW-fed planar UWB antenna with dual band-notched property is presented. The dual band rejection is achieved by etching a C-shaped slot on the radiation patch and two L-shaped parasitic strips in the ground plane. The experimental and measured results show that the proposed antenna exhibits an impedance bandwidth over an ultrawideband frequency range from 2.4 to 12.5 GHz with VSWR less than 2, except for two stopbands at 3.3 to 3.75 GHz and 5.07 to 5.83 GHz for filtering the WiMAX and WLAN signals, respectively. It also demonstrates a nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern. The fabricated antenna has a tiny size, only 32 mm × 32 mm × 0.508 mm. The simulated results are compared with the measured performance and show good agreement. The simple structure, compact size, and good characteristics make the proposed antenna an excellent candidate for UWB applications.

AbstractA compact high isolation MIMO-UWB antenna with triple frequency rejection bands is proposed for UWB communication applications. The proposed MIMO-UWB antenna consists of two identical UWB antennas and each antenna element has a semicircle ring shaped radiation patch fed by a bend microstrip feeding line for covering the UWB band, which operates from 2.85 GHz to 11.79 GHz with an impedance bandwidth of 122.1 %. By etching a L-shaped slot on the ground plane, and embedding an “anchor” shaped stub into the patch and integrating an open ring under the semicircle shaped radiation patch, three notch bands are realized to suppress WiMAX (3.3–3.6 GHz), WLAN(5.725–5.825 GHz) and uplink of X-band satellite (7.9–8.4 GHz) signals. The high isolation with S21<–20 dB in most UWB band is obtained by adding a protruded decoupling structure. The design procedure of the MIMO-UWB antenna is given in detail. The proposed MIMO-UWB antenna is simulated, fabricated and measured. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MIMO-UWB antenna has a stable gain, good impedance match, high isolation, low envelope correlation coefficient and good radiation pattern at the UWB operating band and it can provide three designated notch bands.

This paper presents a novel design of a modified ultrawideband (UWB) antenna array integrated with a multimode resonator bandpass filter. First, a single UWB antenna is modified and studied, using a P-shape radiated patch instead of a full elliptical patch, for wide impedance bandwidth and high realized gain. Then, a two-element UWB antenna array is developed based on this modified UWB antenna with an inter-element spacing of 0.35 λL, in which λL is the free space wavelength at the lower UWB band edge of 3.1 GHz, compared to 0.27 λL of a reference UWB antenna array designed using a traditional elliptical patch shape. The partial ground plane is designed with a trapezoidal angle to enhance matching throughout the UWB frequency range. The mutual coupling reduction of a modified UWB antenna array enhances the reflection coefficient, bandwidth, and realized gain, maintaining the same size of 1.08 λ0 × 1.08 λ0 × 0.035 λ0 at 6.5 GHz center frequency as that of the reference UWB antenna array. The UWB antenna array performance is investigated at different inter-element spacing distances between the radiated elements. To add filtering capability to the UWB antenna array and eliminate interference from the out-of-band frequencies, a multimode resonator (MMR) bandpass filter (BPF) is incorporated in the feedline while maintaining a compact size. The measurement results showed a close agreement with simulated results. The proposed UWB filtering antenna array design achieved a wide fractional bandwidth of more than 109.87%, a high realized gain of more than 7.4 dBi, and a compact size of 1.08 λ0 × 1.08 λ0 × 0.035 λ0 at 6.5 GHz center frequency. These advantages make the proposed antenna suitable for UWB applications such as indoor tracking, radar systems and positioning applications.

AbstractA compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented in this paper with a partial ground plane on epoxy woven glass material. The study is discussed to comprehend the effects of various design parameters with explicit parametric analyses. The overall antenna dimension is 0.22×0.26×0.016 λ. A prototype is made on epoxide woven glass fabric dielectric material of 1.6 mm thickness. The measured results point out that the reported antenna belongs to a wide bandwidth comprehending from 3 GHz to more than 11 GHz with VSWR<2. It has a peak gain of 5.52 dBi, where 3.98 dBi is the average gain. Nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns are observed within the operating frequency bands. A good term exists between simulation and measurement results, which lead the reported antenna to be an appropriate candidate for UWB applications.

Interference between ultrawideband (UWB) antennas and other narrowband communication systems has spurred growth in designing UWB antennas with notch characteristics and complicated designs consisting of irregular etched slots and larger physical size. This article presents a simplified notched design method for existing UWB antennas exhibiting four frequency-band-rejecting characteristics. The investigation has been conducted by introducing four semicircular U-shaped slot structures based on a theoretical formulation. The formulation is validated with the equivalent LC lumped parameters responsible for yielding the notched frequency. A novel feature of our approach is that the frequency notch can be adjusted to the desired values by changing the radial length based on the value calculated using a derived formula for each semietched U-slot, which is very simple in structure and design. Additionally, by introducing the rectangular notch at the ground plane, the upper passband spectrum is suppressed while maintaining the wide impedance bandwidth of the antenna applicable for next-generation wireless communications, 5G. The measured result shows that the antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth of 149% from 2.9 to 20 GHz, apart from the four-notched frequencies at 3.49, 3.92, 4.57, and 5.23 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of <2 rejecting the Worldwide Interoperability for microwave Access (WiMAX) band at (3.38-3.7 GHz), the European C-band at (3.84-4.29 GHz), the Indian national satellite (INSAT) at (4.47-4.92 GHz), and wireless local area networks (WLANs) at (5.09-5.99 GHz). Measured and simulated experimental results reveal that the antenna exhibits nearly an omnidirectional pattern in the passband, low gain at the stopband, and good radiation efficiency within a frequency range. The LC equivalent notched frequency has been proposed by analyzing the L and C equivalent formula, and it has been validated with simulated and measured results. The measurement and simulated results correspond well at the LC equivalent notch band rejecting the existing narrowband systems.

AbstractIn this paper, a novel compact UWB antenna with variable notched band characteristics for UWB applications is presented. The designed antenna primarily consists of an adjusted elliptical shaped metallic patch and a partial ground plane. The proposed antenna has a compact size of only 17 × 17 mm2. The suggested antenna covers the frequency range from 3.1 GHz to 12 GHz. A single notched band has been achieved at 7.4 GHz with the aid of integrating a novel closed loop resonator at the back plane of the antenna. This notched band can be utilized to alleviate the interference impact with the downlink X-band applications. Besides, a square slot was cut in the loop in order to obtain a variable notched band. With the absence and the existence of this slot, the notched band can be varied to mitigate interference of the upper WLAN band (5.72–5.82 GHz) and X-band (7.25–7.75 GHz) with UWB applications. A good agreement between measurement and simulation results was achieved, which affirms the appropriateness of this antenna for UWB applications.

In this paper, a simple method of enhancing the bandwidth of the Bell-shaped UWB Antenna for indoor localization systems is proposed. Therefore, a modified version of the bell-shaped Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) antenna for indoor localization systems is presented. The proposed antenna is printed on a low-cost FR-4 substrate of 21×27×1.6mm3 size. It is composed of a bell-shaped radiating patch and a multi-slotted ground plane. The measured results show that the proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of about 11.2GHz ranging from 3.16GHz to 14.36GHz at S11<−10dB. Compared to the original version, an enhancement of about 5.56GHz in the measured impedance bandwidth was observed.
