To enhance the crack resistance of asphalt-treated base (ATB), a type of gapped and semiopened gradation ATB mixture, GSOG, was designed. Its design method was proposed based on the volume design method and performance tests. Firstly, several gradations were designed preliminarily in which middle particle sizes of coarse aggregates were partially or completely gapped according to the gradation specification. Secondly, their voids in coarse aggregates (VCA) were determined through dry rod compaction test on coarse aggregates, and then their theoretical voids were calculated. Gradations whose theoretical voids met the requirements were selected to fabricate specimens with Superpave Gyratory Compactor, and their voids were determined using vacuum sealing method and submerged weight in water method. Finally, gradations whose voids meet requirements were selected to fabricate different types of specimens for various performance tests, and the optimal gradation can be selected comprehensively considering their performances, especially focusing on their crack resistance. According to this gradation design method, the gradation of GSOG-25 was designed, and its performances, including high-temperature stability, water stability, fatigue, and antireflection crack resistance, were measured and compared to ordinary ATB-25. The results demonstrate that the performance of GSOG-25 is much better than that of ordinary ATB-25, especially in anticracking capacity.

The paper studied on the mix design method of two different warm mix asphalt adopted Marshall test and SGC(Superpave Gyratory Conpactor) test, and analysed their differences of high temperature stability, low temperature cracking resistance performance. The results show that, for different types of warm mix asphalt, it should be taken a different test method to design. It was recommended that the design of warm mix asphalt based on surface activity agent should use Marshall method, and warm mix asphalt with the addition of organic agent should use SGC method.

Additives on low temperature compaction and performances of compacted mixtures, the author devised low temperature environment compaction test, and then, comparison tests of volume parameters, high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity were conducted. Tests results showed that the wax additives and the surface-active additive can significantly contribute to mixtures low-temperature compactibility. The wax additive helps to improve high temperature stability obviously, and has no significant contribution to low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity. The surface-active additive directly reduces water sensitivity, the wax additive indirectly plays the role of reducing water sensitivity by increasing the density of mixture, and the foam additive has no obvious effect on the water sensitivity.

The energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission of asphalt pavement have become a very serious global problem. The high-temperature stability and durability of polyurethane (PU) are very good. It is studied as an alternative binder for asphalt recently. However, the strength-forming mechanism and the mixture structure of the PU mixture are different from the asphalt mixture. This work explored the design and performance evaluation of the PU mixture. The PU content of mixtures was determined by the creep slope (K), tensile strength ratios (TSR), immersion Cantabro loss (ICL), and the volume of air voids (VV) to ensure better water stability. The high- and low-temperature stability, water stability, dynamic mechanical property, and sustainability of the PU mixture were evaluated and compared with those of the stone matrix asphalt mixture (SMA). The test results showed that the dynamic stability and bending strain of the PU mixture were about 7.5 and 2.3 times of SMA. The adhesion level of PU and the basalt aggregate was one level greater than the limestone, and basalt aggregates were proposed to use in the PU mixture to improve water stability. Although the initial TSR and ICL of PU mixture were lower, the long-term values were higher; the PUM had better long-term water damage resistance. The dynamic modulus and phase angles (φ) of the PU mixture were much higher. The energy consumption and CO2 emission of the PU mixture were lower than those of SMA. Therefore, the cold-mixed PU mixture is a sustainable material with excellent performance and can be used as a substitute for asphalt mixture.

This paper introduces dynamic water effect into the test, develops a laboratory test device for simulating the dynamic water effect on asphalt pavement, and puts forward a test method of dynamic water effect working together with load, water and temperature. Based on this method, the high temperature stability of seven kinds of asphalt mixtures with the factors of asphalt grade, gradation and air voids are studied. The research shows that the effect of dynamic water can take adverse effect for the high temperature stability of asphalt mixture. The effect degree is different under different factors. It is the most disadvantaged when the air voids of the mixture is near 10%, the skeleton structure gradation of mixture is better than the suspended structure at the most disadvantage air voids, and the mixture made of high viscosity asphalt is more affected when the temperature is higher.

The volume parameter of matrix asphalt mixture is an important target in the design of the semi-flexible pavement. The research used volume-standar to design four kinds of matrix asphalt mixture, fulfilled mechanics performances and performances of semi-flexible pavement material with different aging, compared with common asphalt mixture and researched the effect by air void and pore structure. It proves that the compacted intensity, high-temperature stability and low temperature bend of the semi-flexible pavement material is better than common asphalt pavement material, the performances of matrix asphalt mixture with high air void is better. As for matrix asphalt mixture with same air void but different pore structure, the performances of homogenous grade design is prior to consecutive grade disign.

This paper introduces an asphalt mixture that mixed with different admixtures, rutting resistance agent and lignin fiber, at the same time. Rutting test and freeze-thaw splitting test are used to analyze rutting resistance on the high temperature and low temperature cracking of the asphalt mixture. The experiments with different mixes material composition are conducted to analysis various properties of the two admixtures on the mixture, especially the high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and the law of improvement effect. In addition, the experiments also determine the optimal asphalt content of different type of mixtures. The results showed that the single-doped KTL rutting resistance or lignin fibers have some improvement in water temperature performance of asphalt mixture, stability improvement of double-doped admixture asphalt mixture is better than the single-doped asphalt mixture, such as KTL rutting resistance agents and lignin fibers

This study presented the preparation and performance of a kind of high viscosity and elastic recovery asphalt (HVERA) by using some modifiers. The performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), rock asphalt (RA), crumb rubber (CR), and stabilizing agent (SA) for different modifiers was investigated by conventional binder test. Effects of modifiers on the high- and low-temperature properties of HVERA were investigated. The dynamic viscosity (DV) test, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) analysis indicated that the high- and low-temperature rheological properties of asphalt were improved attribute to the addition of mixture of modifiers. Meanwhile, the short-term aging and long-term aging were simulated by rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and pressure aging vessel (PAV) tests. Furthermore, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements were conducted for obtaining the mechanism and microstructure distribution of the modified asphalt binders. From the test results in this study, it was evident that the addition of SBS, RA, CR, and SA into a neat asphalt binder could both significantly improve the viscosity of the binder at high temperature and lower the creep stiffness at low temperature, which was beneficial to better both high-temperature stability and low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt pavements. It was proved that the high temperature grade of HVERA could be increased by increasing of RA and a proper percentage of modifiers could be improved by the low temperature grade of HVERA.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of three different media in teaching a specific motor skill. Validated lessons utilizing three different media — motion/sound, slide/sound, and story boards — were used to teach basic manipulations of the M203 Grenade Launcher. Written and performance tests, derived directly from the instructional objectives, were used to evaluate the learning. As evaluated by the performance test, learners using motion film performed significantly better than those using either slides or workbooks, and required significantly less time. Written tests, however, failed to detect this difference. These results suggest that much previous research comparing media may have been inconclusive due to defects in experimental design, such as using a written test to measure motor skills taught by visual media.
