Zn and Zn-based alloys exhibit biosafety and biodegradation, considered as candidates for biomedical implants. Zn-0.02 wt.% Mg (Zn-0.02 Mg), Zn-0.05 wt.% Mg (Zn-0.05 Mg), and Zn-0.2 wt.% Mg (Zn-0.2 Mg) wires (Φ 0.3 mm) were prepared for precision biomedical devices in this work. With the addition of Mg in Zn-xMg alloys, the grain size decreased along with the occurrence of Mg2Zn11 at the grain boundaries. Hot extrusion, cold drawing, and annealing treatment were introduced to further refining the grain size. Besides, the hot extrusion and cold drawing improved the tensile strength of Zn-xMg alloys to 240-270 MPa while elongation also increased but remained under 10%. Annealing treatment could improve the elongation of Zn alloys to 12% -28%, but decrease the tensile strength. Furthermore, Zn-xMg wires displayed an increase in degradation rate with Mg addition. The findings might provide a potential possibility of Zn-xMg alloy wires for biomedical applications.

In order to improve mechanical properties of roll cast 8011 aluminum alloy (AA 8011) by grain strengthening, and expand its application field, the effect of different annealing treating processes on mechanical properties and microstructures of cryogenic rolled AA 8011 was investigated. The roll cast AA 8011 was cryogenic rolled for six passes and then annealed. The annealing treatment was adopted at 100–300 °C for 1 h, and then the annealing treatment was adopted at 220 °C for 10–80 min. The microstructures of AA 8011 under roll cast and cryogenic rolled states were studied by using OM. The grain size was calculated by the Image-pro-plus 5.0. The microstructures of AA 8011 under annealing states were observed by using TEM and energy dispersive spectrum analysis. The results show that the second phase Al8Fe2Si appears in the cryogenic rolled AA 8011 after annealing treatment. When the dislocation moves in the grain, the dislocation plays a pinning role, which is conducive to grain refinement. The optical annealing treatment was treated at 220 °C for 40 min with optimal thermal stability. The ideal grain size is 1 μm, hardness is 65 HV, and tensile strength is 202 MPa. It is about 1.5 times of the roll cast AA 8011.

The effect of Al contents on the properties and structures of AZ80, AZ91,AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys has been studied. The experiments of homogenization treatment, hot extrusion, and annealing treatment are carried out in order to study the effects of these processes to the properties and structure of AZ80, AZ91, AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys. The parameters of homogenization treatment (420°C×24h, 420°C×36h) determined by DSC and metallurgical photo are sufficient which ensure the eutectic phase melt into magnesium matrix greatly. The strength of extruded bars shortly after homogenization treatment increase (Rp0.2 from 232 to 310MPa), but elongation decrease (A from 12 to 2.5%) with Al contents. The differences and causes of structure and mechanical properties of extruded bar after the process of aging are analyzed in detail by tensile experiments, hardness measurement, and optical observation.

The experiments of hot extrusion, hard drawing and annealing treatment were carried out in this paper in order to study the effects of these processes to the mechanical properties and structure of MB5B wrought magnesium alloy. The experimental results showed that, the eutectic phase was to melt into magnesium matrix greatly during the heating process and precipitated from matrix with point-like state in transverse section after extrusion. The tensile strength and elongation of billets after above mentioned treatment were equal to those after homogenization treatment. The as-received billets are then drawn continuously under the circumstance that the percent reduction in area(ψ) of each pass was no more than 15% and the total reduction in area was no more than 50%. As the results the tensile strength increased and elongation decreased sharply at the same time. The grains and eutectic phase of alloy after drawing were prolonged significantly. The subsequent heat treatment had little effects on the properties of the hard drawn bar.

The Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-Ce-Er alloy wires with different extrusion ratio (λ=12, 25, 50, 100) were produced by hot extrusion at 450oC. The effects of extrusion ratio on the microstructures, tensile strength and elongation of Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-Ce-Er alloy wires were researched by means of OM, SEM, TEM and mechanical test. The results show that with the extrusion ratio increasing, the average grain size decreased from 83μm to 42μm, the Al2Cu, Al8Cu4Ce and Al8Cu4Er phases was broken gradually, and the homogeneousdistribution about these second-phases in the alloy wires increased. The tensile strength increased from 366MPa to 459MPa with extrusion ratio, and the elongation initially decreased and then increased with the increase of extrusion ratio. Dynamic recrystallization for Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-Ce-Er alloy occurred at different extrusion ratios. Withincreasing of extrusion ratio, the main nucleation mechanism of dynamic recrystallization changed from the sub-grain coalescence at lower extrusion ratioto the acceleration of second-phases for nucleation at higher extrusion ratio.

Advanced Cu-40mass%Zn alloys with a high tensile strength and excellent machinability have been developed via a powder metallurgy (P/M) process. They are environmentally benign because fine graphite particles are included instead of lead (Pb) to improve their machinability. The effect of the content and particle size of the graphite on the mechanical properties and machinability are investigated in this paper. When applying a conventional P/M process consisting of the cold compaction and hot extrusion to consolidate elementally premixed mixture of Cu-40mass%Zn and graphite powder, the addition of 1 mass% graphite particles with  m in diameter is suitable to obtain a high tensile strength and good machinability at the same time.

Mechanical and degradation properties are crucial factors of guided tissue/bone regeneration (GTR/GBR) membranes. In this work, a series of fibrous membranes with different ratios of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin (Gel) were prepared (PCL:Gel = 1:9 (P1G9), 3:7 (P3G7), 5:5 (P5G5), 7:3 (P7G3), and 9:1 (P9G1)) by electrospinning, and their physicochemical properties and In Vitro degradation behaviors were systematically investigated. Mechanical tests showed that tensile strength was enhanced with the presence of Gel, and the tensile strength of the P9G1 membrane reached nearly three times that of the pure PCL membrane. The degradation rate of the composite membranes could be adjusted by controlling the ratio of PCL and Gel; the higher the Gel content was, the faster the degradation of the PCL/Gel membrane. The higher PCL content favored maintaining the fibrous structure of the electrospun membranes. These findings will be beneficial for designing PCL/Gel composite materials for biomedical applications.

The effect of extrusion rate and ratio on the Al3Zr induced dynamic recrystallization (DRX) that occurs during hot extrusion of RS-P/M Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloys was investigated. An increase in the logarithm of extrusion rate promoted DRX and lead to a monotonic increase in the number of fine grains. Although DRX was also promoted and the grain size reduced by an increase in extrusion ratio from 10 to 20, the DRX behavior hardly changed, even when the extrusion ratio exceeded 20. However, with increasing extrusion ratio, the width of fibrous grain, i.e., the unrecrystallized region, decreased and the tensile strength increased to 879 MPa. When the extrusion rate and ratio exceeded 54 mm/min and 20, respectively, a marked grain coarsening occurred upon solution treatment, and the tensile strength tended to decrease, because of the high dislocation density induced by hot extrusion. By annealing at 563 K before solution treatment, it was possible to prevent grain coarsening, and thus prevent the strength decrease.

This paper describes the effect of hot extrusion on the microstructure and mechanical properties of electromagnetic continuous cast (EMC) AZ31 alloy. The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture surfaces of AZ31 alloy before and after extrusion were investigated. The results demonstrate that extrusion processing gives rise to a strong basal texture. The grains are significantly refined and the average grain size of localized fine grain area is 2μm. Compared with EMC ingots, as-extruded specimens have much finer grain size and more uniform microstructure, and the second phase ( Mg 17 Al 12) becomes smaller and distributes more uniformly. The mechanical properties of the deformed AZ31 were improved after hot-extrusion. When the extrusion ratio was 10, the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and reduction in cross-sectional area of as-extruded AZ31 alloy were 248MPa, 306MPa and 28.44%, which were respectively enhanced by 78.4%, 41% and 45.25%, compared with those of as-cast samples. With the increase of extrusion ratio, the grain refining effect was more significant and the microstructure was more uniform. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and reduction in cross-sectional area increased obviously with increasing the extrusion ratio. The observation on fracture surfaces demonstrates that the fracture mode changes from ductile-brittle fracture to ductile fracture after extrusion.

The microstructure of as-cast Mg-xAl-2Sn alloys consists of an α-Mg matrix, a Mg17Al12 eutectic phase and a Mg2Sn phase. In as-cast alloys, the Mg17Al12 eutectic phase was located at along grain boundaries. The eutectic phase of the extruded alloys was elongated in the extrusion direction and crushed into fine particles because of deformation during hot extrusion, and the grain size was refined with an increased Al content. The maximum values of the yield strength and tensile strength were 240 MPa and 300 MPa at 9 wt.% containing Al element, respectively.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of the Cu-17Ni-3Al-X alloy extruded at different temperatures were investigated by hardness and tensile tests, optical microscope and scanning electronic microscope. The experimental results showed that dynamic re-crystallization occured during the hot extrusion at 1000 . The grain size of the extruded alloy was significantly refined and the mechanical properties increased remarkably compared to the as-cast alloy. The alloy extruded at 1075 exhibited good mechanical properties with tensile strength of 994 MPa, Brinell hardness of 296 and elongation of 8.0%, which are 30%, 9% and 285% higher than that of the as-cast alloy.
