Abstract P128: Serum Lipid Levels at Adolescence can Predict Adult Dyslipidemia in South Korea - The Kangwha Study

Introduction: Several studies have examined tracking pattern of lipid profile level during long follow-up periods in Western countries. However, there have been few such studies in East Asia. Hypothesis: We assessed the hypothesis that there exists tracking pattern of lipid profile level from adolescence to adulthood, and lipid measurements in adolescence can predict adult dyslipidemia in South Korea. Methods: The Kangwha Study was a community-based prospective cohort study that started in 1986 in Kangwha County, South Korea . A total of 400 participants (54% women) whose serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level were measured at least once during adolescence (1992-1996), and repeatedly measured at least once during adulthood (2005-2015) were enrolled in our study. Body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure were measured at all measurements. Family history of cardiovascular disease, smoking history, and presence of adult dyslipidemia were checked at adulthood. The tracking pattern of lipid profile level was determined by tracking coefficients (low: <0.30; moderate: 0.30-0.59; moderately high: 0.60-0.89; high: ≥0.90). The tracking coefficients were calculated by Generalized Estimating Equation. The predictability of adult dyslipidemia was assessed by multiple logistic regression and area under curve (AUC) value. Additional analyses were performed to find out whether repeated lipid measurements during adolescence can enhance the predictability of adult dyslipidemia or not. Results: The presence of adult dyslipidemia was 26.3% (105 of 400). Mean age of study participants at enrollment is 13.8 years (SD, 1.6 years), and that at adulthood is 30.1 years (SD, 3.7 years). When adjusted for age, body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure, the tracking coefficient of total cholesterol was 0.59 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.54-0.63), that of triglyceride was 0.39 (95% CI, 0.28-0.49), and that of HDL cholesterol was 0.51 (95% CI, 0.46-0.55). The AUC value of our multiple logistic regression model on adult dyslipidemia without lipid profile levels at adolescence was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.72-0.83), and that with lipid profile levels at adolescence was 0.80 (95% CI, 0.75-0.85). P value for AUC comparison was significant (p=0.02). In additional analyses, using the average lipid profile levels in multiple lipid measurements at adolescence did not significantly improve the AUC value (p>0.09). Conclusion: In conclusion, moderate tracking patterns of serum lipid profile level were shown in this study. Serum lipid profile measurements at adolescence could help the prediction of adult dyslipidemia. The results of this study supported the need of lipid profile screening at adolescence.

Background: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the changes of serum lipid profile in apparently healthy shift workers and non shift workers to identify the possible high risk factors for developing atherosclerotic changes. Methods: Serum Total Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL-Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol levels were estimated and blood pressure was measured in apparently healthy adult shift worker and non shift worker participants. Total 60 subjects age ranged from 20-50 years were selected, of whom 30 were shift workers (Study) for at least one year and 30 were non shift workers (control). Height, weight and resting blood pressure of all the subjects were recorded before collection of blood. Blood samples were collected after over night fasting for estimation of serum lipid and lipoprotein levels and were measured by standard laboratory technique. Data were analyzed by unpaired ‘t' test. Results: The mean serum Total Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol levels were significantly higher in shift workers compared to those of non shift workers. Again mean serum Triglyceride and HDL-Cholesterol levels in the shift workers did not differ significantly from that of non shift workers. These changes may be related to internal desynchronization due to disruption of circadian rhythm. Conclusion: The changes in serum lipid and lipoprotein levels with the exception of HDL-Cholesterol and Triglyceride in the subjects engaged in shift work may put them at increased risk for coronary artery disease. Abstract Lipid traits (total, low-density and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides) are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. DNA methylation is not only an inherited but also modifiable epigenetic mark that has been related to cardiovascular risk factors. Our aim was to identify loci showing differential DNA methylation related to serum lipid levels. Blood DNA methylation was assessed using the Illumina Human Methylation 450 BeadChip. A two-stage epigenome-wide association study was performed, with a discovery sample in the REGICOR study (n = 645) and validation in the Framingham Offspring Study (n = 2,542). Fourteen CpG sites located in nine genes (SREBF1, SREBF2, PHOSPHO1, SYNGAP1, ABCG1, CPT1A, MYLIP, TXNIP and SLC7A11) and 2 intergenic regions showed differential methylation in association with lipid traits. Six of these genes and 1 intergenic region were new discoveries showing differential methylation related to total cholesterol (SREBF2), HDL-cholesterol (PHOSPHO1, SYNGAP1 and an intergenic region in chromosome 2) and triglycerides (MYLIP, TXNIP and SLC7A11). These CpGs explained 0.7%, 9.5% and 18.9% of the variability of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the Framingham Offspring Study, respectively. The expression of the genes SREBF2 and SREBF1 was inversely associated with methylation of their corresponding CpGs (P-value = 0.0042 and 0.0045, respectively) in participants of the GOLDN study (n = 98). In turn, SREBF1 expression was directly associated with HDL cholesterol (P-value = 0.0429). Genetic variants in SREBF1, PHOSPHO1, ABCG1 and CPT1A were also associated with lipid profile. Further research is warranted to functionally validate these new loci and assess the causality of new and established associations between these differentially methylated loci and lipid metabolism.

Background: Our study aimed to assess the relationship between the parameters of the lipid profile, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), anthropometry influence with the severity of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 in women. Material and methods. The study design was a cross-sectional study. The research included 138 women aged 29–82 years who had undergone a new coronavirus infection COVID-19 at least two months ago. Participants were divided into three groups by severity of infection: mild (n = 61), moderate (n = 70) and severe (n = 7). Body mass index, waistline and hip circumference, waistline circumference to hip circumference index, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, AIP were calculated. Statistical processing of the obtained results was carried out using the SPSS software package (version 20.0) using the Mann-Whitney test, univariate logistic regression analysis, Pearson chi-squared test. Results. The levels of HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower in group 3 compared with the level of HDL-cholesterol in women in group 2 (p2-3 = 0.046). BMI was higher in the moderately severe group compared to the mild one (26.32 [23.305; 30.4] versus 28.78 [24.72; 34.77], p1-2 = 0.026). Hip circumference was higher in patients with severe COVID-19 than in patients with mild course (104 [98; 112] versus 114 [109.5; 126], p1-3 = 0.039), AIP was higher in women with severe course compared to women with moderate and mild course (p1-3 = 0.043, p2-3 = 0.04). The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the moderate course of COVID-19 is associated with BMI (OR = 1.09, 95 % CI 1.019–1.166, p1-2 = 0.012), and the severe course with WC (OR = 1.041, 95 % CI 1.001–1.084, p1-3 = 0.046), AIP value ≥ 0.11 (OR = 13.824, 95 % CI 1.505–126.964, p1-3 = 0.02; OR = 11,579, 95 % CI 1,266–105,219, p2-3 = 0.03) and HDL level < 40 mg/dl (OR = 14,750, 95 % CI 2,317–93,906, p1-3 = 0.004; OR = 8,000, 95 % CI 1,313– 48,538, p1-3 = 0.024). Conclusion. Patients from the group with moderate and severe course of the new coronavirus infection have higher body mass index, hip circumference, AIP, lower HDL values. The chance of a moderate course of COVID-19 is associated with an increased BMI value, and a severe course with WC, AIP ≥ 0.11 and HDL level < 40 mg/dl.

A prospective study was conducted in the Northern region of Bangladesh, to investigate the serum lipid profile viz the level of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of hypertensive patients and compares them with levels of control subjects. The results revealed that serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly markedly raised (p>0.001) whereas the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower (p>0.001) in hypertensive patients as compared to control subjects. No significant changes of serum lipid profile were found between male and female hypertensive patients, but in control subjects, markedly higher levels of serum lipid profile was observed in male compared to that of female. It was concluded that hypercholesterolaemia, hypertrigyceridaemia and low density lipoprotein are the main lipid abnormalities on the incidence of hypertension in the study area. Introduction The aim of this study was to estimate the correlation between C-reactive protein levels and leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease in men. Material and methods The study included 183 working capable men chosen randomly from the regular systematical check-up in Health Centre Banja Luka in 2006. Standard laboratory methods were used to establish the following: total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol level and LDL-cholesterol level was calculated. . High sensitive C-reactive protein level was measured by immunuturbidimetric method CRP (Latex) HS Roche Diagnostic. Results Average values of high sensitive C-reactive protein for the whole group was 1.69 mg/L, total cholesterol 5.73 mmol/L, HDL-cholesterol 1.38 mmol/L, LDL-cholesterol 3.40 mmol/L. The average value for the systolic blood pressure was 132.9 mmHg, dyastolic blood pressure 85.4 mmHg, and body mass index 28.47 kg/m2. Out of the overall number of examinees, 74 were smokers (40.4%) and 109 (59.6%) nonsmokers. The statistical analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference between C-reactive protein level in the group with dyastolic blood pressure below 90 mmHg and above (p<0.05); as well as statistically significant difference between the group with desirable body mass index and the group with increased BMI(p<0.05). Discussion The results of our study show that there is a significant correlation between CRP levels and high blood pressure, and in persons with increased body mass index. However, there was no correlation between CRP levels and total cholesterol HDL and LDL cholesterol levels. Conclusion High sensitive CRP screening is useful in early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

The Influence of Chronic Helicobacter Pylori Infection on some Serum Lipid Profile Parameters, Apolipoproteins A-I and B and Lp(a) Lipoprotein Data on proatherogenic lipid profile alterations due to chronic Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection are contradictory. Aim of this study was to examine the differences in some lipid parameters between 55 subjects of both gender with a chronic HP infection (IgG>50 U/mL and IgA <20 U/mL) and 55 gender matched HP seronegative subjects (IgG and IgA <20 U/mL). Total cholesterol (TC) (p<0.001), triglycerides (TG) (p<0.05), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) (p<0.02), non-HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-C), apolipoprotein (apo) B (p<0.001), Lp(a) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) serum levels were higher in HP seropositive than in seronegative subjects, while there were almost no differences in apo A-I. In HP seropositive subjects, the frequency of pathological TC (p<0.001), TG (p<0.05), LDL-C (p<0.01), non-HDL-C (p<0.01), apo B (p<0.02) and Lp(a) serum levels was higher compared to seronegative. Serum HP IgG titers correlated negatively with TC, LDL-C (p<0.05), non-HDL-C, apo B and Lp(a) levels, and positively with TG, HDL-C and apo A-I levels. Results are similar for both genders. Our results confirm the hypothesis that a chronic HP infection could modify the lipid profile in a proatherogenic way.

Excess consumption of egg especially its yolk has been implicated in hyperlipidaemia (high level of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood). Conversely, soluble dietary fibers, probably due to their ability to bind free lipid molecules, appear to play an important role in protecting against hyperlipidaemia. This study sought to evaluate the comparative effects of selected sources of fibers: apple, oats, and wheat bran, on serum lipid profile in physiologically normal Wistar rats. Twenty rats were used for the study and were randomized into four groups, with each containing five animals (). A group which serves as control was fed with egg yolk while the other three groups were fed with apple, oats, and wheat bran, respectively. After two weeks of feeding, the animals were fasted overnight and blood samples from the retro-orbital sinus of the eye were collected for analyses of lipid profile. The results obtained showed that the group fed with oats had the lowest level of total cholesterol ( mg), low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ( mg), and triglycerides (TG) ( mg), as well as the highest level of HDL cholesterol ( mg). On the contrary, the group fed with egg yolk showed the highest level of total cholesterol ( mg), LDL cholesterol ( mg), and triacylglyceride ( mg), as well as the lowest level of HDL cholesterol ( mg). There was no significant difference () between oats and apple in their effects on blood lipid profile of Wistar rats. Wheat bran, being an insoluble dietary fibre, had less significant () effect on the blood lipid profile when compared to oats and apple. Findings from this study may assist physicians and dieticians in recommending appropriate diet for individuals desiring to normalize their blood lipids levels.

Objective: To estimate lipid profile in pre-eclampsia cases in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the dept. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) and outdoor Pathology Dept. of MMCH. A total 100 pregnant women were included in this study, out of which 50 were pre-eclampsia and 50 normal pregnant women. Purposive sampling technique was followed for selection of study population. Estimation of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) were done by colorometric method.Result: Findings of the study showed that woman with pre-eclampsia exhibits 14% higher mean plasma level of total cholesterol. It was (229.12 ± 49.31 mg/dl) in pre-eclampsia and (196.68 ± 38.60 ml/dl) in control group and the deference was statistically highly significant (p<.001). Mean plasma level of triglyceride (TG) was approximately 20% higher in the study group (251.28 ± 80.51) as compared with control (200.84 ± 80.51) which was also statistically significant (p<0.01). There was significant raised level of LDL cholesterol in pre-eclampsia (142.12 ± 44.57 mg/dl) as compared to (114.21 ± 37.81 mg/dl) in control which was statistically significant (p=0.004). HDL cholesterol level was found 13% lower in pre-eclampsia pregnant women than control group. There was statistically significant decrease of HDL cholesterol (p<0.05) in study group in which it was 36.74 ± 8.42 mg/dl and in normal pregnancy it was 42.40 ± 9.91 mg/dl.Conclusion: It can be concluded that altered serum lipid levels are seen in pre-eclampsia compared to normal pregnancy.Bangladesh J Obstet Gynaecol, 2013; Vol. 28(2) : 61-65

Background: The millennium development goals encourage governments to address and reduce various developmental issues, two of the important ones being maternal and child health. The one of the important causes of maternal mortality in India is pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and present study is to identify the relationship between disturbed lipid profile and preeclampsia its effect on fetal and maternal outcome.Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study done on data of maternal care and outcomes from the NRI General Hospital, Guntur district in the year 2013. Multiple logistic regression analysis is applied and results are adjusted to covariates maternal age and gravida.Results: Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure of normal group (n=50) and PIH group (n=60) are 116.08±7.77, 76.08±4.93, and 165.66±16.8 105.5±14.07 respectively. Birth weights of infants in normotensives and PIH group are 2.85±0.33 and 1.93±0.659 respectively. Percentages of fetal and maternal complications in PIH group are 88.33% and 25%. Still births are present in 31.66% of PIH cases. Mean and SD of gestational age in weeks in normal and PIH groups are 37.92±1.94 and 34.36±3.44 respectively.Conclusions: The model showed significant association between the selected independent variable, covariates and outcomes. The study demonstrates that multiple logistic regression may be applied to medical data in developing predictor models which are useful in clinical settings.

Abstract Objective : to determine the relationship of BMI (Body Mass Index) and lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDV) in the second trimester of pregnancy with the incidence of hypertension in the third trimester of pregnancy Methods :this study is a prospective cohort. The research subjects were the second trimester pregnant women group which examined by BMI and lipid profile, then assessed the incidence of hypertension in third trimester. The study was conducted in Department of Obstetric and Gynecology and Prof.DR.RDKandou General Hospital, and affiliated hospital from January 2017 until May 2017. Data analyzed with SPSS version 2.0 Results:from 49 research subjects, based on age,most subject with age 20-34 years with 42 subjects (85.8%). Based on the parity obtained 27 subjects (55.2%) with multigravida. By education level, most are high school with 19 subjects (38,7%). From the occupation, most are housewives with 30 subjects (61.3%). Based on BMI, most were subjects with normal BMI with 21 subjects (42.9%). Pearson test showed a significant association between BMI with total cholesterol (r = 0,500 and p = 0,000), whereas Spearman test showed significant relation between BMI with LDL cholesterol (r = 0,416 and p = 0,003) and significant relation between second trimester LDL cholesterol with third trimester diastolic blood pressure(r = 0.303 and p = 0.034). Conclusions:there was a significant correlation between BMI with total cholesterol & LDL in second trimester  and there was significant correlation between LDL in second trimester and third trimesterdiastolic blood pressure. Metode : Penelitian ini merupakan kohort prospektif. Subjek penelitian adalah kelompok ibu hamil trimester kedua yang diperiksa IMT dan profil lipidnya, kemudian dinilai kejadian hipertensi pada trimester ketiga. Penelitian dilakukan di Departemen Obstetri dan Ginekologi  Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat (RSUP) Prof.DR.R.D Kandou, dan RS jejaring mulai Januari 2017 sampai Mei 2017. Data dianalisa dengan SPSS versi 2.0 Hasil : Dari 49 subjek penelitian, berdasarkan usia paling banyak usia  20 – 34 tahun dengan 42  subjek (85,8%). Berdasarkan paritas didapatkan 27 subjek (55,2%) dengan multigravida. Berdasarkan pendidikan, paling banyak adalah SMA dengan 19 subjek (38,7%). Dari jenis pekerjaan, paling banyak adalah ibu rumah tangga dengan 30 subjek (61,3%). Berdasarkan IMT, paling banyak adalah subjek dengan IMT normal dengan 21 subjek (42,9%). Uji Pearson menunjukkan hubungan bermakna antara IMT dengan kolesterol total (r = 0,500 dan p = 0,000), sedangkan Uji Spearman menunjukkan hubungan bermakna antara IMT dengan kolesterol LDL (r = 0,416 dan p = 0,003) dan hubungan bermakna antara kolesterol LDL trimester kedua dengan tekanan darah diastol trimester ketiga  (r = 0,303 dan p = 0,034). Kesimpulan : Terdapat hubungan bermakna antara IMT dengan kolesterol total, LDL trimester kedua dan terdapat hubungan bermakna antara LDL trimester kedua dengan tekanan darah diastol trimester ketiga. Kata kunci :IMT, kolesterol total, VLDL, TG, LDL, HDL, hipertensi.
