Excess consumption of egg especially its yolk has been implicated in hyperlipidaemia (high level of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood). Conversely, soluble dietary fibers, probably due to their ability to bind free lipid molecules, appear to play an important role in protecting against hyperlipidaemia. This study sought to evaluate the comparative effects of selected sources of fibers: apple, oats, and wheat bran, on serum lipid profile in physiologically normal Wistar rats. Twenty rats were used for the study and were randomized into four groups, with each containing five animals (). A group which serves as control was fed with egg yolk while the other three groups were fed with apple, oats, and wheat bran, respectively. After two weeks of feeding, the animals were fasted overnight and blood samples from the retro-orbital sinus of the eye were collected for analyses of lipid profile. The results obtained showed that the group fed with oats had the lowest level of total cholesterol ( mg), low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ( mg), and triglycerides (TG) ( mg), as well as the highest level of HDL cholesterol ( mg). On the contrary, the group fed with egg yolk showed the highest level of total cholesterol ( mg), LDL cholesterol ( mg), and triacylglyceride ( mg), as well as the lowest level of HDL cholesterol ( mg). There was no significant difference () between oats and apple in their effects on blood lipid profile of Wistar rats. Wheat bran, being an insoluble dietary fibre, had less significant () effect on the blood lipid profile when compared to oats and apple. Findings from this study may assist physicians and dieticians in recommending appropriate diet for individuals desiring to normalize their blood lipids levels.

A prospective study was conducted in the Northern region of Bangladesh, to investigate the serum lipid profile viz the level of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of hypertensive patients and compares them with levels of control subjects. The results revealed that serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly markedly raised (p>0.001) whereas the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower (p>0.001) in hypertensive patients as compared to control subjects. No significant changes of serum lipid profile were found between male and female hypertensive patients, but in control subjects, markedly higher levels of serum lipid profile was observed in male compared to that of female. It was concluded that hypercholesterolaemia, hypertrigyceridaemia and low density lipoprotein are the main lipid abnormalities on the incidence of hypertension in the study area. The Influence of Chronic Helicobacter Pylori Infection on some Serum Lipid Profile Parameters, Apolipoproteins A-I and B and Lp(a) Lipoprotein Data on proatherogenic lipid profile alterations due to chronic Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection are contradictory. Aim of this study was to examine the differences in some lipid parameters between 55 subjects of both gender with a chronic HP infection (IgG>50 U/mL and IgA <20 U/mL) and 55 gender matched HP seronegative subjects (IgG and IgA <20 U/mL). Total cholesterol (TC) (p<0.001), triglycerides (TG) (p<0.05), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) (p<0.02), non-HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-C), apolipoprotein (apo) B (p<0.001), Lp(a) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) serum levels were higher in HP seropositive than in seronegative subjects, while there were almost no differences in apo A-I. In HP seropositive subjects, the frequency of pathological TC (p<0.001), TG (p<0.05), LDL-C (p<0.01), non-HDL-C (p<0.01), apo B (p<0.02) and Lp(a) serum levels was higher compared to seronegative. Serum HP IgG titers correlated negatively with TC, LDL-C (p<0.05), non-HDL-C, apo B and Lp(a) levels, and positively with TG, HDL-C and apo A-I levels. Results are similar for both genders. Our results confirm the hypothesis that a chronic HP infection could modify the lipid profile in a proatherogenic way.

The objective of this study was to analyze the association of fiber consumption with nutritional status and blood lipid profile in dyslipidemic adults. The design study was cross sectional survey involving 79 subjects. The results showed that there were significant correlations between energy intake with High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol, fat intake with BMI (Body Mass Index), and BMI with Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol (p&lt;0.05). There was no significant correlation between consumption of fiber with nutritional status and blood lipid profile (p&gt;0.05). In conclusion, most of the dyslipidemia subjects were obese. Dyslipidemia subjects should keep their intake of energy and fat in recommended ranges in order not to be obese and keep the BMI in normal range to avoid abnormalities of blood lipid profile.<br /><br />

Background: Stroke is one of the major global health problems. Stroke is the most common clinical manifestation of cerebrovascular disease of which more than 99% are due to arterial involvement and less than 1% due to venous involvement in the form of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (CVT). Among arterial causes 85% are due to infarction and 15% due to haemorrhage. There is difference in serum lipid levels in subtypes of strokes to guide lipid-lowering therapy which can reduce incidence of stroke and stroke related mortality by adapting primary and secondary preventive measures. Authors have endeavoured to correlate severity of lipid derangement and stroke. Methods: In this study 64 consecutive eligible ischaemic stroke cases and 64 eligible hemorrhagic stroke cases would be included. Cases of strokes will be divided into ischaemic and hemorrhagic as per clinical features and with help of brain imaging by CT scan and MRI at the time of admission and 8 hour fasting lipid profile was collected from all cases. All this information will be filled in preformed format. Results: Serum lipid profile of two categories of stroke showed raised serum total cholesterol in 39.1% patients of ischaemic stroke in contrast to 18.8% patients with haemorrhagic stroke (p=0.019). Stroke patients showed raised in LDL cholesterol in 29.7% patients of ischaemic stroke in contrast to 9.4% patients with haemorrhagic stroke, (p=0.007). Conclusions: Based on the finding of our study we conclude that ischemic stroke patient had higher lipid derangement as compare to haemorrhagic stroke in terms of raise total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of co-treatment with purified annatto oil (PAO) or its granules (GRA, Chronic®) with that of testosterone on the orchiectomy-induced osteoporosis in Wistar rats. After surgery, rats were treated from day 7 until day 45 with testosterone only (TES, 7 mg/kg, IM) or TES + PAO or GRA (200 mg/kg, p.o.). The following parameters were evaluated: food/water intake, weight, HDL, LDL, glucose, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), alkaline phosphatase levels, blood phosphorus and calcium contents, femur weight, structure (through scanning electron microscopy), and calcium content (through atomic absorption spectrophotometry). Our results show that orchiectomy could significantly change the blood lipid profile and decrease bone integrity parameters. Testosterone reposition alone could improve some endpoints, including LDL, TC, bone weight, and bone calcium concentration. However, other parameters were not significantly improved. Co-treatment with PAO or GRA improved the blood lipid profile and bone integrity more significantly and improved some endpoints not affected by testosterone reposition alone (such as TG levels and trabeculae sizes). The results suggest that co-treatment with annatto products improved the blood lipid profile and the anti-osteoporosis effects of testosterone. Overall, GRA had better results than PAO.

ABSTRACT Introduction Obesity is emerging as an epidemic worldwide. Obesity is associated with a number of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular abnormalities, anemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychosocial abnormalities. Aim This study aims at comparing the lipid profile levels of obese and nonobese men. Materials and methods This was a case—control study conducted at a tertiary care center. Totally, 80 men in the age group of 20 to 47 years attending the master health checkup were included in the study, out of which 40 men with normal body mass index (BMI) of 18 to 25 belonged to group I and 40 men with increased BMI of 30 and above belonged to group II. Lipid profile parameters, such as triglycerides (TGLs), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were estimated in them. The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 15.0. Results Statistically significant difference was found in the total cholesterol levels with a p-value of 0.040 while the difference in LDL cholesterol was statistically highly significant with a p-value of 0.040. Conclusion Among lipid profile parameters, only total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol showed significant difference between the obese and nonobese individuals. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel contains anthocyanin, fiber and vitamin C, so it can be used to improve lipid profile in dyslipidemia. The peel of the dragon fruit is not durable, so in this study we used freeze-dried dragon fruit peel. The aim of this study was to prove that the administration of the red dragon fruit peel in a dose of 0.72 g/200 g BW, 1.08 g/200 g BW, and 1.44 g/200 g BW of rat per day for 28 days may improve lipid profile in male wistar strain white rats with high-fat diet. Lipid profiles were studied by examining of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. This was a pure experimental study using randomized post test only control group design. This study used experimental animal of 30 male wistar strain white rats which were divided into five groups. Measurements of total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol levels were done by CHOD-PAP method, while triglyceride level was measured with GPO-PAP method. Data were analyzed statistically by One Way Anova test. The results of this study indicated that giving the peel of red dragon fruit as much as 0.72 g lowered total cholesterol levels, 1.08 g lowered total and LDL cholesterol levels, and 1.44 g lowered total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and raised HDL cholesterol level. Red dragon fruit peel can be used alternatively to improve lipid profile in dyslipidemia.

Introduction: Several studies have examined tracking pattern of lipid profile level during long follow-up periods in Western countries. However, there have been few such studies in East Asia. Hypothesis: We assessed the hypothesis that there exists tracking pattern of lipid profile level from adolescence to adulthood, and lipid measurements in adolescence can predict adult dyslipidemia in South Korea. Methods: The Kangwha Study was a community-based prospective cohort study that started in 1986 in Kangwha County, South Korea . A total of 400 participants (54% women) whose serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level were measured at least once during adolescence (1992-1996), and repeatedly measured at least once during adulthood (2005-2015) were enrolled in our study. Body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure were measured at all measurements. Family history of cardiovascular disease, smoking history, and presence of adult dyslipidemia were checked at adulthood. The tracking pattern of lipid profile level was determined by tracking coefficients (low: <0.30; moderate: 0.30-0.59; moderately high: 0.60-0.89; high: ≥0.90). The tracking coefficients were calculated by Generalized Estimating Equation. The predictability of adult dyslipidemia was assessed by multiple logistic regression and area under curve (AUC) value. Additional analyses were performed to find out whether repeated lipid measurements during adolescence can enhance the predictability of adult dyslipidemia or not. Results: The presence of adult dyslipidemia was 26.3% (105 of 400). Mean age of study participants at enrollment is 13.8 years (SD, 1.6 years), and that at adulthood is 30.1 years (SD, 3.7 years). When adjusted for age, body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure, the tracking coefficient of total cholesterol was 0.59 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.54-0.63), that of triglyceride was 0.39 (95% CI, 0.28-0.49), and that of HDL cholesterol was 0.51 (95% CI, 0.46-0.55). The AUC value of our multiple logistic regression model on adult dyslipidemia without lipid profile levels at adolescence was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.72-0.83), and that with lipid profile levels at adolescence was 0.80 (95% CI, 0.75-0.85). P value for AUC comparison was significant (p=0.02). In additional analyses, using the average lipid profile levels in multiple lipid measurements at adolescence did not significantly improve the AUC value (p>0.09). Conclusion: In conclusion, moderate tracking patterns of serum lipid profile level were shown in this study. Serum lipid profile measurements at adolescence could help the prediction of adult dyslipidemia. The results of this study supported the need of lipid profile screening at adolescence.

Background: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the changes of serum lipid profile in apparently healthy shift workers and non shift workers to identify the possible high risk factors for developing atherosclerotic changes. Methods: Serum Total Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL-Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol levels were estimated and blood pressure was measured in apparently healthy adult shift worker and non shift worker participants. Total 60 subjects age ranged from 20-50 years were selected, of whom 30 were shift workers (Study) for at least one year and 30 were non shift workers (control). Height, weight and resting blood pressure of all the subjects were recorded before collection of blood. Blood samples were collected after over night fasting for estimation of serum lipid and lipoprotein levels and were measured by standard laboratory technique. Data were analyzed by unpaired ‘t' test. Results: The mean serum Total Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol levels were significantly higher in shift workers compared to those of non shift workers. Again mean serum Triglyceride and HDL-Cholesterol levels in the shift workers did not differ significantly from that of non shift workers. These changes may be related to internal desynchronization due to disruption of circadian rhythm. Conclusion: The changes in serum lipid and lipoprotein levels with the exception of HDL-Cholesterol and Triglyceride in the subjects engaged in shift work may put them at increased risk for coronary artery disease.
