The Effect of Hawai’i’s Big Island on Track and Structure of Tropical Cyclones Passing to the South and West*

Abstract The effect of the Big Island of Hawai’i on tropical cyclone (TC) track and structure is investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The high (~4000 m) mountains of the Big Island modulate lower-tropospheric flow in such a way that it can influence TCs hundreds of kilometers away from the island. When a TC approaches from the east, the blocking of lower-tropospheric flow leads to a slowing of the TC’s movement. As a TC passes close to the south side of the Big Island, it deviates southward. The TC core convection and winds can become axisymmetric because of the blocking of the stronger northeasterly flow to the north of the storm. The authors hypothesize that this axisymmetrization led to the unexpected eye formation of Hurricane Flossie (2007) just southeast of the Big Island. As a TC moves into the lee (southwest side) of the Big Island, the flow associated with the island wake leads to a track deviated to the right. The Hurricane Dot (1959) simulations suggest that this effect contributed to an observed deviation to the north, which led to eventual Kauai landfall. A greater TC intensity is found in the lee of the Big Island compared to the case without the island, which is primarily attributed to a weakened vertical wind shear associated with the island blocking.

The paintings in the triclinium of the Villa Item, a dwelling-house excavated in 1909 outside the Porta Ercolanese at Pompeii, have not only often been published and discussed by foreign scholars, but they have also formed the subject of an important paper in this Journal. The artistic qualities of the paintings have been ably set forth: it has been established beyond all doubt that the subject they depict is some form of Dionysiac initiation: and, of the detailed interpretations of the first seven of the individual scenes, those originally put forward by de Petra and accepted, modified or developed by Mrs. Tillyard appear, so far as they go, to be unquestionably on the right lines. A fresh study of the Villa Item frescoes would seem, however, to be justified by the fact that the majority of previous writers have confined their attention almost entirely to the first seven scenes—the three to the east of the entrance on the north wall (fig. 3), the three on the east wall and the one to the east of the window on the south wall, to which the last figure on the east wall, the winged figure with the whip, undoubtedly belongs.

Abstract This study investigates the size changes of tropical cyclones (TCs) traversing the Philippines based on a 37-yr statistical analysis. TC size is defined by the radius of 30-kt (≈15.4 m s−1) wind speed (R30) from the best track data of the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 71 TCs passed the Philippines during 1979–2015. The numbers of size increase (SI; 36) and size decrease (SD; 34) cases are very similar; however, the last 15 years have seen more SI cases (17) than SD cases (11). SI and SD cases mostly occur along northerly and southerly paths, respectively, after TCs pass the Philippines. Before landfall, SI cases have small initial sizes and weak intensities, but SD cases have larger initial sizes and stronger intensities. After landfall, most SI cases are intensifying storms, and most SD cases are nonintensifying storms. Composite analyses of vertical wind shear, absolute angular momentum flux, relative humidity, and sea surface temperature between SI and SD cases are compared. All of these values are larger in SI cases than in SD cases. Furthermore, the interdecadal difference in the ratio of the numbers of SI to SD cases reveals an unusually high number of SI cases during 2001–15. The synoptic patterns between 1979–2000 and 2001–15 are analyzed. The high SI ratio in the latter period is related to strong southwesterly wind in the south of the South China Sea that raised relative humidity, warmed the sea surface, and increased import of angular momentum flux.


The chief circumstance that induced Capt. Flinders to think his observations Upon the marine barometer were worthy of attention, was the coincidence that took place between the rising and falling of the mercury, and the setting in of winds that blew from the sea and from off the land, to which there seemed to be at least as much reference as to the strength of the wind or the state of the atmosphere. Our author’s examination of the coasts of New Holland and the other parts of the Terra Australis, began at Cape Leuwen, and con­tinued eastward along the south coast. His observations, which, on account of their length, we must pass over, show, that a change of wind from the northern half of the compass to any point in the southern half, caused the mercury to rise; and that a contrary change caused it to fall. Also, that the mercury stood considerably higher When the wind came from the south side of east and west, than when, in similar weather, it came from the north side.

Abstract The M 6.2 Elmore Desert Ranch earthquake of 24 November 1987 was associated spatially and probably temporally with left-lateral surface rupture on many northeast-trending faults in and near the Superstition Hills in western Imperial Valley. Three curving discontinuous principal zones of rupture among these breaks extended northeastward from near the Superstition Hills fault zone as far as 9 km; the maximum observed surface slip, 12.5 cm, was on the northern of the three, the Elmore Ranch fault, at a point near the epicenter. Twelve hours after the Elmore Ranch earthquake, the M 6.6 Superstition Hills earthquake occurred near the northwest end of the right-lateral Superstition Hills fault zone. Surface rupture associated with the second event occurred along three strands of the zone, here named North and South strands of the Superstition Hills fault and the Wienert fault, for 27 km southeastward from the epicenter. In contrast to the left-lateral faulting, which remained unchanged throughout the period of investigation, the right-lateral movement on the Superstition hills fault zone continued to increase with time, a behavior that was similar to other recent historical surface ruptures on northwest-trending faults in the Imperial Valley region. We measured displacements over 339 days at as many as 296 sites along the Superstition Hills fault zone, and repeated measurements at 49 sites provided sufficient data to fit with a simple power law. Data for each of the 49 sites were used to compute longitudinal displacement profiles for 1 day and to estimate the final displacement that measured slips will approach asymptotically several years after the earthquakes. The maximum right-lateral slip at 1 day was about 50 cm near the south-central part of the North strand of Superstition Hills fault, and the predicted maximum final displacement is probably about 112 cm at Imler Road near the center of the South strand of the Superstition Hills fault. The overall distributions of right-lateral displacement at 1 day and the estimated final slip are nearly symmetrical about the midpoint of the surface rupture. The average estimated final right-lateral slip for the Superstition Hills fault zone is about 54 cm. The average left-lateral slip for the conjugate faults trending northeastward is about 23 cm. The southernmost ruptured member of the Superstition Hills fault zone, newly named the Wienert fault, extends the known length of the zone by about 4 km. The southern half of this fault, south of New River, expressed only vertical displacement on a sinuous trace. The maximum vertical slip by the end of the observation period there was about 25 cm, but its growth had not ceased. Photolineaments southeast of the end of new surface rupture suggest continuation of the Superstition Hills fault zone in farmland toward Mexico.

Charles Edward Inglis was the second surviving son of Dr Alexander Inglis, M.D., M.R.C.S.E., of Auchindinny and Redhall, and of his first wife, Florence, the second daughter of John Frederick Feeney, proprietor of the Birmingham Daily Post, whose family founded the Feeney Art Gallery in that city. The Inglis family of Auchindinny appear first as tenants and afterwards owners of the farm of Langbyres, which adjoins the west side of Murdostoun in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire. The first mention of them in connexion with the place is found in the Lord High Treasurer’s accounts for 1543 when John Inglis in Langbyres and James Kneland in Swyntre had to pay £13 6s. 8d. to redeem their movable goods, which had been escheated as a penalty for their absence from the army, mustered by James V to invade England, which was routed at Solway Moss. The estate of Auchindinny, about 730 acres, was purchased in 1702 by one John Inglis, a Writer to the Signet, who had succeeded to Langbyres in 1685. Auchindinny lies about eight miles south of Edinburgh, on the right bank of the North Esk and at the south end of the parish of Lasswade. The house, completed in 1707, is a severe substantial sandstone building. John Inglis had eleven children. One of his grand-daughters, Barbara, co-heiress of Archibald, Laird of Auchindinny, married in 1777 her cousin, Captain, afterwards Admiral, John Inglis, R.N., of Redhall, whose father had left Scotland and settled in Philadelphia as a merchant about 1736. Captain Inglis commanded H.M.S. Belliqueux at the battle of Camperdown. The ship took a conspicuous share in the fighting, there being a hundred and three casualties out of a complement of four hundred and ninety-one, and quite redeemed the character which she had lost in the Mutiny at the Nore a few months earlier. It is said that the Captain was puzzled in the battle by his Admiral’s frequent signals and at last threw his signal book on deck exclaiming, ‘Damn the signals; up wi’ the hellem and gang into the middle o’ it’. He thus anticipated Nelson’s celebrated memorandum that ‘when a captain should be at a loss he cannot do very wrong if he lay his ship alongside of the enemy’.

Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) in the eastern semicircle of large-scale monsoon gyres (MGs) were observed to take either a northward (sudden northward and northward without a sharp turn) or a westward TC turn, but only the northward turn was previously simulated in a barotropic model. To understand what controls TC track types in MGs, idealized numerical experiments are performed using the full-physics Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. These experiments indicate that TCs initially located in the eastern semicircle of MGs can generally take three types of tracks: a sudden northward track, a westward track, and a northward track without a sharp turn. The track types depend upon the TC movement relative to the MG center. In agreement with barotropic simulations, the WRF simulation confirms that approaching and being collocated with the MG center is crucial to the occurrence of sudden northward TC track changes and that sudden northward track changes can be generally accounted for by changes in the steering flow. TCs that take westward tracks and northward tracks without a sharp turn do not experience such a coalescence process. Westward TCs move faster than MGs and are then located to the west of the MG center, while TCs move more slowly than MGs and then take a northward track without a sharp turn. This study reveals that the specific TC track in the eastern semicircle of an MG is sensitive to the initial wind profiles of both MGs and TCs, suggesting that improvement in the observation of TC and MG structures is very important for predicting TC track types in MGs.

Tegarama was one of the eastern lands of the Hittite Kingdom. In the geographic sense it is part of the Armenian Highland that is why its history is of special interest to us. Taking into account the fact that the Armenian people had considerable ethnic ties with the Upper Euphrates region, specialists have traditionally tended to identify “Home of Torgom” in the Trans Euphrates region together with the city Tegarama (Assyrian Til-Garimmu) mentioned from the 2nd millennium BC. “Home of Torgom” literally repeats Bet-Togarma mentioned in the Bible. The study of the history of the country of Tegarama is also important because in Armenian historiography, starting from Movses Khorenatsi, Armenian ancestor Hayk is called “Son of Torgom”, and the Armenian people - “People of Torgom”. Most of the researchers located Tegarama in the place of the present settlement Gyurun. By comparing the “Cappadocian”, Hittite and Assyrian sources, Tegarama can be located in the Upper Euphrates valley, on the right bank of the river, to the north of Kargamis, to the west of Isuwa, to the south of Upper Land and to the east of Kanes. The territory of Tegarama was not far from Nesa - one of the initial centers of the Hittites; and it was also one of the initial places of inhabitance of the Hittites. Tegarama also occupied a strategically important position. On the one hand it bordered on the country of Mitanni, on the other hand - on Isuwa. Thus, the country of Tegarama occupied a significant geographic position: on the one hand roads led from here to other western districts of the Armenian Highland, to Tsopk, and on the other hand - to Northern Syria and Northern Mesopotamia. It was also one of the spiritual centers of Hatti.

A methodology is presented to evaluate the accuracy of cloud cover fraction (CCf) forecasts generated by numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models. It is demonstrated with a case study consisting of simulations from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. In this study, since the WRF CCf forecasts were initialized with reanalysis fields from the North American Mesoscale (NAM) Forecast System, the characteristics of the NAM CCf products were also evaluated. The procedures relied extensively upon manually-generated, binary cloud masks created from VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imager Radiometry Suite) imagery, which were subsequently converted into CCf truth at the resolution of the NAM and WRF gridded data. The initial results from the case study revealed biases toward under-clouding in the NAM CCf analyses and biases toward over-clouding in the WRF CCf products. These biases were evident in images created from the gridded NWP products when compared to VIIRS imagery and CCf truth data. Thus, additional simulations were completed to help assess the internal procedures used in the WRF model to translate moisture forecast fields into layered CCf products. Two additional sets of WRF CCf 24 h forecasts were generated for the region of interest using WRF restart files. One restart file was updated with CCf truth data and another was not changed. Over-clouded areas in the updated WRF restart file that were reduced with an update of the CCf truth data became over-clouded again in the WRF 24 h forecast, and were nearly identical to those from the unchanged restart file. It was concluded that the conversion of WRF forecast fields into layers of CCf products deserves closer examination in a future study.

In this article, the author utilizes a GIS to spatially analyze radar reflectivity returns during the 24 hours following 43 tropical cyclone (TC) landfalls. The positions of convective rainfall regions and their areal extent are then examined according to storm intensity, motion, vertical wind shear, time until extratropical transition, time after landfall, and distance from the coastline. As forward velocity increases in conjunction with an extratropical transition, these regions move outward, shift from the right side to the front of the TC, and grow in size. A similar radial shift, but with a decrease in areal extent, occurs as TCs weaken. Further quantification of the shapes of these regions could yield a more spatially accurate assessment of where TCs may produce high rainfall totals.

In July 1875, the Hon. Alexander Morris, lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and the north-west, received a letter from Lawrence Clarke, the Hudson’s Bay Company factor at Fort Carlton, informing him that a serious state of affairs had arisen on the south branch of the Saskatchewan and strongly pressing for a detachment of the mounted police. This letter mentioned the establishment of a permanent half-breed settlement at St. Laurent and stated that the half-breeds had “assumed to themselves the right to enact laws, rules and regulations for the Government of the Colony and adjoining country of a most tyrannical nature, which the minority of the settlers are perforce bound to obey or be treated with criminal severity.” The “president” of this government was Gabriel Dumont, who was alleged to have coerced various “freemen” and Indians on the plains by seizing the property of, and levying fines upon, those who refused to acknowledge his authority. The letter continued with a statement that the Indians, too, were assuming a hostile attitude and urged that “unless we have a certain protective force stationed at or near Carlton, the ensuing Winter, I cannot answer for the result, serious difficulties will assuredly arise and life and property be endangered.”
