Reactive hot-melt resin can form joints with a certain flexibility, high processing speed, high initial rigidity, and high temperature. Such resins can be used to manufacture fiberglass composites because they support a high tensile stress, allow for large strains at low stresses, and have a low density and a working temperature range of −40–110°C. Furthermore, when the mechanical stress is removed, the material returns to its initial condition, as observed in the flexural tests. A polyurethane-based reactive hot-melt resin was characterized by tensile shear tests, Shore hardness tests, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. The contact angles at different temperatures were measured to evaluate the adhesive wettability and to select the best application temperature range of the adhesive, finding the best result at 140 °C. The matrix was characterized at different curing times, and matrix bonding with different adhesive materials was evaluated to provide a greater versatility of applications, to explore new fields of use of this resin as in the matrix of a composite with fiberglass.

In the present study, we used tensile shear tests, Shore hardness tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetry (TGA) to characterize a reactive polyurethane-based hot melt adhesive. We also measured contact angles at various temperatures to evaluate the wettability of the adhesive and to determine the optimum temperature range for applications. The adhesive was tested following curing for various times, and the bonding of the adhesive with several materials was investigated to determine whether it has the potential for greater versatility of application. Therefore, we explored new uses of the adhesive, such as in the matrix of a composite with fiberglass. Reactive hot melt adhesives are useful because they provide a certain degree of flexibility to joints, and have high processing speeds, high initial rigidity, and high working temperatures.

A reactive hot-melt resin (polyurethane) was used to manufacture Guadua composites with a certain flexibility, high processing speed, good initial rigidity, and high temperature performance. These composites can support a moderate tensile stress, allow for large strains at low stresses, and have a low density and a working temperature range of -40 °C and 110 °C. During the flexural test, bamboo composites with reactive polyurethane matrix do not break or fail during the test. A polyurethane-based reactive hot-melt resin was characterized by tensile tests, Shore hardness tests, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. Besides, a composite material was made with Guadua fiber and polyester matrix, which had a greater strength in the test of tension and flexion, although it had a lower percentage of elongation than the composite material with reactive polyurethane. Guadua fiber can increase the strength by 266% of polyurethane matrix and 228% of polyester matrix.

The processes of melting and crystallization of lauric fat KS35 and coconut oil by the method of differential scanning calorimetry were studied. The process of crystallization of coconut oil takes place in the temperature range 13.1–15.9 °C, while heat is released 118.3 J/g. The process of crystallization of lauric fat KS35 occurs in the temperature range 20.4–25.9 °C, with a heat release of 152.7 J / g. Lauric fat melts in the range of 28.7–33.9 °C, 147.4 J/g is absorbed during this endothermic reaction. Temperature interval, the heat effect of melting coconut oil is lower (18.3–26.4 °C, 95.5 J / g). Reduction of melting and crystallization temperatures of coconut oil in comparison with lauric fat proves that the composition of coconut oil includes a greater number of unsaturated acids, the crystallization and melting of which occurs at a lower temperature than saturated ones.In the paper, the possibility is of using DSC data for determining optimal parameters for forming and cutting praline masses in the production of praline candies. Forming should be done after holding the praline mass in the temperature range 20-26 °C, with most of the triglycerides of lauric fat having a solid state, which allows the molded praline tow to keep its shape and not spread after exiting the matrix. It is advisable to cut praline tows on candies at a temperature of 13 – 16 °C, since in this range most of the triglycerides and coconut oil have a solid state, which makes it possible not to crush the tourniquet and sweets during cutting..

Binary Nb-Hf alloys exhibit a wide bcc solid solution phase field at temperatures above the Hfα→ß transition (2023K) and a two phase bcc+hcp field at lower temperatures. The β solvus exhibits a small slope above about 1500K, suggesting the possible existence of a miscibility gap. An earlier investigation showed that two morphological forms of precipitate occur during the bcc→hcp transformation. The equilibrium morphology is rod-type with axes along <113> bcc. The crystallographic habit of the rod precipitate follows the Burgers relations: {110}||{0001}, <112> || <1010>. The earlier metastable form, transition α, occurs as thin discs with {100} habit. The {100} discs induce large strains in the matrix. Selected area diffraction examination of regions ∼2 microns in diameter containing many disc precipitates showed that, a diffuse intensity distribution whose symmetry resembled the distribution of equilibrium α Bragg spots was associated with the disc precipitate.

Abstract In this study, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests were performed to measure the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites under different cooling rates. The characteristic parameters of crystallization were obtained, and the nonisothermal crystallization model was established. The crystallization temperature range of the material at different cooling rates was predicted by the model. The unidirectional laminates were fabricated at different cooling rates in the crystallization temperature range. The results showed that the crystallization temperature range shifted to a lower temperature with the increase of cooling rate, the established nonisothermal crystallization model was consistent with the DSC test results. It is feasible to shorten the cooling control range from the whole process to the crystallization range. The crystallinity and transverse tensile strength declined significantly with the increase of the cooling rate in the crystallization temperature range. The research results provided theoretical support for the selection of cooling conditions and temperature control range, which could be applied to the thermoforming process of semi-crystalline polymer matrixed composites to improve the manufacturing efficiency.

Compositing is an interesting strategy that has always been employed to introduce or enhance desired functionalities in material systems. In this paper, sponges containing polypropylene, lignin, and octavinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OV-POSS) were successfully prepared via an easy and elegant strategy called thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). To fully explore the behaviour of different components of prepared sponges, properties were characterized by a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared measurement (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, wettability properties toward an organic liquid and oil were investigated. The FTIR analysis confirmed the chemical modification of the components. TGA and DSC measurements revealed thermal stability was much better with an increase in OV-POSS content. OV-POSS modified sponges exhibited ultra-hydrophobicity and high oleophilicity with water contact angles of more than 125°. The SEM revealed that POSS molecules acted as a support for reduced surface roughness. Moreover, OV-POSS-based blend sponges showed higher sorption capacities compared with other blend sponges without OV-POSS. The new blend sponges demonstrated a potential for use as sorbent engineering materials in water remediation.

Pultrusion is a highly efficient composite manufacturing process. To accurately describe pultrusion, an appropriate model of resin cure kinetics is required. In this study, we investigated cure kinetics modeling of a vinyl ester pultrusion resin (Atlac 430) in the presence of aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) and zinc stearate (Zn(C18H35O2)2) as processing additives. Herein, four different resin compositions were studied: neat resin composition, composition with Al(OH)3, composition comprising Zn(C18H35O2)2, and composition containing both Al(OH)3 and Zn(C18H35O2)2. To analyze each composition, we performed differential scanning calorimetry at the heating rates of 5, 7.5, and 10 K/min. To characterize the cure kinetics of Atlac 430, 16 kinetic models were tested, and their performances were compared. The model based on the [Formula: see text]th-order autocatalytic reaction demonstrated the best results, with a 4.5% mean squared error (MSE) between the experimental and predicted data. This study proposes a method to reduce the MSE resulting from the simultaneous melting of Zn(C18H35O2)2. We were able to reduce the MSE by approximately 34%. Numerical simulations conducted at different temperatures and pulling speeds demonstrated a significant influence of resin composition on the pultrusion of a flat laminate profile. Simulation results obtained for the 600 mm long die block at different die temperatures (115, 120, 125, and 130 °C) showed that for a resin with a final degree of cure exceeding 95% at the die exit, the maximum difference between the predicted values of pulling speed for a specified set of compositions may exceed 1.7 times.

In this study, carbon/epoxy composites were manufactured by coating with a polyamide at different weight percentages (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.%, and 20 wt.%) to improve their impact resistance and fracture toughness. The chemical reaction between the polyamide and epoxy resin were examined by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the carbon/epoxy composites were analyzed. The mechanical properties of the carbon/epoxy composites, such as transverse flexural tests, longitudinal flexural tests, and impact tests, were investigated. After the impact tests, an ultrasonic C-scan was performed to reveal the internal damage area. The interlaminar fracture toughness of the carbon/epoxy composites was measured using a mode I test. The critical energy release rates were increased by 77% compared to the virgin carbon/epoxy composites. The surface morphology of the fractured surface was observed. The toughening mechanism of the carbon/epoxy composites was suggested based on the confirmed experimental data.

AbstractCeramics based on (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3 are promising candidates for actuator applications because of large strains generated by an electric field-induced phase transition. For example, the (1−x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xSrTiO3 system exhibits a morphotropic phase boundary at x = 0.2–0.3, leading to high values of inverse piezoelectric constant d*33, which can be further improved by the use of single crystals. In our previous work, single crystals of (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 and (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 were grown by the solid state crystal growth technique. Growth in the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 system was sluggish whereas the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 single crystals grew well. In the present work, 0.8(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-0.2(Sr1−xCax)TiO3 single crystals (with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) were produced by the solid state crystal growth technique in an attempt to improve crystal growth rate. The dependence of mean matrix grain size, single crystal growth distance, and electrical properties on the Ca concentration was investigated in detail. These investigations indicated that at x = 0.3 the matrix grain growth was suppressed and the driving force for single crystal growth was enhanced. Replacing Sr with Ca increased the shoulder temperature Ts and temperature of maximum relative permittivity Tmax, causing a decrease in inverse piezoelectric properties and a change from normal to incipient ferroelectric behavior.

The microstructural evolution in an Al - Cu - Mg - Ag alloy with trace Zr addition during homogenization treatment was characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). It was shown that the low-melting-point phase segregating toward grain boundaries is Al 2 Cu , with a melting point of 523.52°C. A two-step homogenization process was employed to optimize the microstructure of the as-cast alloy, during which the alloy was first homogenized at a lower temperature, then at a higher temperature. After homogenized at 420°C for 6 h, Al 3 Zr particles were finely formed in the matrix. After that, when the alloy was homogenized at an elevated temperature for a longer time, i.e., 515°C for 24 h, most of the precipates at the grain boundaries were removed. Furthermore, the dispersive Al 3 Zr precipitates were retained, without coarsening greatly in the final homogenization step. A kinetics model is employed to predict the optimal homogenization time at a given temperature theoretically, and it confirms the result in present study, which is 420°C/6h+515°C/24h.
