Influence of reinforcing fiber on the dry sliding wear behavior of hybrid fabric/benzoxazine composites

Hybrid polyimide (PI)-polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/Nomex fabric composites and Nomex-PTFE/Nomex fabric composites were prepared with benzoxazine (BOZ) as the resin binder. The tribological properties and wear mechanisms of the two composites at different temperatures were investigated using a ball-on-disk wear tester. Before sliding wear tests, a thermo-aging test, thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis of PI and Nomex fibers were performed to evaluate the thermal properties of the two reinforcing fibers. After each wear test, scanning electron microscopy was employed to analyze the morphologies of the worn surfaces of the composite. The results of sliding wear tests show that the difference between the tribological properties of the two composites is small at room temperature. However, the hybrid PI-PTFE/Nomex fabric composite achieves better tribological properties at high temperatures compared with the hybrid Nomex-PTFE/Nomex fabric composite, which suffered wear failure at 240℃. It is proposed that the excellent thermal mechanical property and thermal stability of PI fibers is the main factor that endows the PI-PTFE/Nomex/BOZ composite with a more favorable tribological property at high temperatures. Moreover, the influence of the increasing temperature on the tribological properties of the two composites was also investigated.

Fe-28Al and Fe-28Al-10Ti alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The phases and dry sliding wear behavior were studied. The results show that Fe-28Al bulk materials are mainly characterized by the low ordered B2 Fe3Al structure with some dispersed Al2O3 particles. Fe-28Al-10Ti exhibits more excellent wear resistance than Fe-28Al, especially after long distance sliding wear test. There are obvious differences in wear mechanisms of Fe-28Al and Fe-28Al-10Ti alloys under different testing conditions. Under the load of 100N, there is plastic deformation on the worn surface of Fe-28Al. The main wear performance of Fe-28Al-10Ti is particle abrasion, the characteristics of which are micro cutting and micro furrows, but micro-crack and layer splitting begin to form on the surface of Fe-28Al. Under the load of 200N, serious plastic deformation and work-hardening lead to rapid crack propagation and eventually the fatigue fracture of Fe-28Al. Plastic deformation is the main wear mechanism of Fe-28Al-10Ti under the load of 200N, which are characterized by micro-crack and small splitting from the worn surface.

A wear resistant TiC-Cr7C3/Fe surface composite was produced by cast technique and in-situ synthesis technique. The microstructure and dry-sliding wear behavior of the surface composite was investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and MM-200 wear test machine. The results show that the surface composite consists of TiC and Cr7C3as the reinforcing phase, α-Fe and γ-Fe as the matrix. The surface composite has excellent wear-resistance under dry-sliding wear test condition with heavy loads.

Ti6Al4V alloy was shot peened by using stainless-steel shots with different sizes (0.09–0.14 mm (S10) and 0.7–1.0 mm (S60)) for two durations (5 and 15 min) using a custom-designed peening system. The shot size was the main parameter modifying the roughness (0.74 µm for S10 vs. 2.27 µm for S60), whereas a higher peening time slightly increased roughness. Hardness improved up to approximately 35% by peening with large shots, while peening time was insignificant in hardness improvement. However, longer peening duration with large shots led to an unwanted formation of micro-cracks and delamination on the peened surfaces. After dry sliding wear tests, the mass loss of peened samples (S60 for 15 min) was 25% higher than that of un-peened samples, while the coefficient of friction decreased by 12%. Plastically deformed regions and micro-scratches were observed on the worn surfaces, which corresponds to mostly adhesive and abrasive wear mechanisms. The present study sheds light on how surface, subsurface and tribological properties of Ti6Al4V vary with shot peening and peening parameters, which paves the way for the understanding of the mechanical, surface, and tribological behavior of shot peened Ti6Al4V used in both aerospace and biomedical applications.

The present works manages readiness of the composites by mix stirring method. A356 amalgam 4 wt. % of B4C and A356-4 wt. % of Graphite and A356-4% B4C-4% Graphite hybrid composites were readied. To enhance the wetting and uniform conveyance of the particles, fortifications were preheated to a temperature of 500 Degree Celsius. The arranged MMCs are subjected to examining SEM instrument which affirms the homogenous uniform appropriation of smaller scale B4C and Graphite particles in the lattice combination without agglomeration. The wear protection of arranged composites was examined by performing dry sliding wear test utilizing DUCOM made stick on plate mechanical assembly. The tests were directed at a consistent heap of 3kg and sliding separation of 4000m over a speed of 100, 200 and 300 rpm. So also the other arrangement of investigations were led at consistent sped of 300 rpm and sliding separation of 4000m and with changing heap of 1kg, 2kg, and 3kg. The outcomes demonstrated that the wear protections of the composites were improved than the lattice material.

Abstract: To improve the wear resistance of the hybrid powder coating, TiO2 nanoparticles was hot mixed to form a homogenous mixture with the powder in the range varying wt. dry sliding wear test conducted to determine the wear resistance. The experiments were design according to Taguchi L9 array to find the optimum nanoparticles content required to minimize the wear rate of the coating. ANOVA was used to determine the effect of the parameters on wear rate. It showed that reinforcement has the maximum contribution on the wear rate of the coating as compared to load and frequency. From the graph of means optimum parametric values was obtained at 2 % wt of reinforcement, 2 N load and 2 Hz frequency. The wear rate decrease with the increase in reinforcement. This paper presents the effect of zirconia filler on mechanical properties and dry sliding wear of bidirectional hybrid (glass and basalt fiber) fabric reinforced epoxy (G-B/E) composites. Fabrication was done by hand layup method followed by compression molding. The effect of zirconia filler loading on mechanical characteristics like hardness, tensile and flexure of fabricated G-B/E composites were determined according to ASTM standards. Also, wear behavior under dry sliding condition was performed using pin-on-disc machine for different applied normal loads/sliding distance. Experimental results reveal that incorporation of zirconia filler improves the mechanical properties. Further, the wear test results indicated addition of zirconia into G-B/E hybrid fiber composites plays important role on specific wear rate under the tribo-conditions selected for the study. Further, inclusion of zirconia into G-B/E composites shows improved wear resistance and addition of 6 wt. % of zirconia exhibits least specific wear rate compared to other hybrid G-B/E composites. In addition, Scanning electron microscope images of selected mechanical test fractured coupons also have been discussed.

Self-lubricating h-BN/Ni coating was prepared on a medium carbon steel substrate by CO2 laser cladding using a powder mixture of NiCrBSi+5%h-BN(wt.%). Microstructures and phase structure of the coating were analyzed using SEM, EDS and XRD. Wear tests were carried out using a M100 pin-on-ring wear tester. The results show that h-BN/Ni coating has much superior war resistance and noticeably lower fiction coefficient under dry sliding wear test conditions.

Titanium and its alloys exhibit a unique combination of physical and corrosion resistance properties which make them ideal materials for space flight engine component such as disks and blades of compressor, marine applications, chemical industries and many bio medical applications. However the use of these materials is limited due to its poor tribological properties. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on Ti-6Al-4V using a pin-on-disc (EN31 steel) configuration. Wear rates were measured with different load and sliding velocity at a constant sliding distance. Microstructures of worn surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

Special brasses containing Mn and Si possess high wear resistance due to the dispersion of hard Mn5Si3 particles. The effect of precipitation hardening on the wear resistance of a Cu–30Zn–3Al–3Mn–0.7Si based brass alloy was investigated. Dry sliding wear test was conducted using a block-on-ring configuration. The results indicated that finely, nanoscale Mn5Si3 particles precipitated from the matrix after annealing at 800 °C for 4 h, resulting in the increase of hardness from 240 to 278 HV. Both the wear loss and friction coefficient decreased, indicating the improvement of the wear resistance. From the examination of the worn surfaces, adhesive and abrasive wear were found to be the major wear forms. The adhesion and abrasion decreased after the precipitation-hardening treatment.

Thick alumina coatings were performed on A356-20vol.% SiCp composites by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) process with different processing time. The dry sliding wear tests were performed on A356-20vol.% SiCp composites with and without surface coating. The samples were tested by pin-on-disc wear test equipment with different applied load and sliding velocity. It is revealed that MAO coating improves resistance to wear of A356-20vol.% SiCp composites in the severe wear conditions. On the basis of the observations and analysis of the worn surface, worn subsurface, wear debris and variation of friction coefficient, the role of MAO coating layer is examined.
