The dynamics and treatment of adolescent learning problems are different from those of childhood problems resulting from developmental delays or developmental imbalances. Even though the school curriculum is based on a logical continuum of learning tasks, some adolescents (although intelligent) are unable to successfully master the orderly sequence of skills and as a result become discouraged, rebellious, disruptive, or all three, and eventually drop out of school before graduation. This article explains how a theory of adolescent learning problems is used to successfully provide treatment for this type of student within the main stream.

A fully automatic apparatus is described for investigations of concept formation and a variety of verbal learning problems. The machine will administer a series of experimental learning tasks with automatic changes in stimuli and reinforcement between problems. A relatively inexpensive component of the apparatus functions as a highly versatile teaching machine.

South Africa, like many countries, has high numbers of learners who do not complete secondary schooling. This reduces these young people’s chances of finding work or of earning a better salary. It is thus important to understand the factors that contribute to high school dropout. In the study reported on here we investigated the factors that caused a number of female learners to drop out and return to high school in a rural community in Mpumalanga. The learners provided 3 reasons for dropping out of school: pregnancy, illness and immigration. The analysis of these factors suggests 3 underlying themes that influence the ability of children to remain in school, viz. health, policies and structures, and poverty. The implications of these and recommendations to address them are discussed. The authors argue that greater interdepartmental efforts are required to support vulnerable girls to remain in school.

The relation between being out of school and participating in criminal economies is widely documented in the literature on youth delinquency. However, the complex connection between these two phenomena has not yet been fully unpacked. This paper draws from two studies that we, the authors, conducted separately to explore the role educational experiences play in shaping the delinquent trajectories of male youth who participate in the drug business in urban centers located in Mexico and Colombia. The first consists of in-depth interviews and surveys conducted in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, while the second is based on long-term ethnographic engagement in Medellín, Colombia. We provide unique insights into the educational experiences of this hard-to-reach population and find that economic hardship does not wholly explain why these young people leave school and engage in delinquent activities. These youth do not "drop out" of school in search of money; rather, they are "pushed out" by a vicious cycle of stigmatization, segregation, punishment, and exclusion. By exploring these dynamics in two cities that have waged long drug wars, this article furthers understanding of the nexus between crime-related violence and educational experiences, thus making an important contribution to the field of education in emergencies.

Siswa MTs Miftahul Ulum sebagian besar berasal dari latar belakang petani dan peternak bebek. Siswa kurang mendapat dukungan keluarga tentang pentingnya pendidikan. Kata kunci: Jiwa Wirausaha, Manajemen Produksi, Telur Asin ABSTRACT Most of the students of MTs Miftahul Ulum come from a background of duck farmers and breeders. Students lack family support regarding the importance of education. This is shown by many students who drop out of school or even marry early. Based on the problem, a solution is needed, namely introducing students to entrepreneurship and management through training in making salted eggs as a provision for life skills. The service team provides assistance during the salted egg making training. The activity of making salted eggs is supported by the student's family background as duck breeders. Salting is one way to preserve eggs to make them more durable. Preserved salted eggs with kitchen ashes. The results of the dedication showed that the students were enthusiastic and happy with the training activities. It is hoped that this training will increase students' pocket money and become provisions for students after graduation. Keywords: Entrepreneurial Spirit, Production Management, Salted Eggs

Abstract This paper addresses the sweeping neoliberal reforms implemented in Ontario’s schools in 2000, and conceptualises them within the terms of ‘millennial capitalism’ (Comaroff & Comaroff, 2000). A close reading of secondary school curriculum documents and the umbrella policies that shape education from ages 5 to 18 years reveals how students are groomed to identify themselves as workers under construction. This is accomplished by mandating career education that defines lived experience as a ‘career’, articulates an identity for students as workers/producers, and dictates a direct relationship between education and the health of the economy. For students the professed advantages of millennial capitalism come from freedom and choice to navigate a post-secondary future in an abstract market that rewards those who respond to its highs and lows. Despite the drop-out ‘crisis’ that followed the initial reforms, and the next government’s efforts to remediate the damage done, ultimately corporatist/careerist mantras continue to haunt classrooms, shape education, and its aims and goals in Ontario. The analysis offered in this paper aims to help us better understand the resilience of the neoliberal agenda in the current global economic ‘crisis’, in light of ongoing calls for ‘value-for-money’ in delivering public services and overall competitiveness. Ontario’s education system has a reputation internationally as a high-level performer; this positioning in light of the anomalies presented by its policy and curriculum serves as a cautionary tale to countries that connect growth in GDP with the results of its children and youth on standardised tests. Further, it reveals the disparity between statistics at the macro level and life at the level of the classroom.

The relationship between engagement and the intention to drop out was the focus of this research. Following an empirical–analytical approach, a sample of 1,122 university students responded to a questionnaire designed to measure the engagement and the intention to drop out of school. The results confirmed that undergraduates who considered dropping out had lower scores on the engagement scale. These data are relevant for the adoption of preventive measures against academic dropouts.
