Significance of Considering Nonlinear Effects in Predicting the Dynamic Behavior of Rotating Machinery

Limitations of the currently practiced linearized analysis of industrial rotating machinery are dis cussed. An appreciation of these limitations is particularly significant for the development of new generation, high performance machinery in which new materials, rotor supports, coupling components, and sophisticated control systems will be used. In the absence of adequate familiarity and experience with the new systems, vari ous complex phenomena associated with their nonlinearities, which may lead to malfunction or catastrophic failure, could be missed altogether. A uniform approach to accurate modeling and analysis of rotor-support systems will therefore be essential. The present paper provides an exposition of recently published studies in nonlinear rotordynamics and their relevance to the design, analysis, and monitoring of rotating machinery. This includes a brief discussion of available analytical/computational methods and the various techniques proposed, which seek reducing the order of rotor systems with large number of degrees of freedom. In ad dition, new results on the nonlinear behavior of fluid-film bearings are presented herein to further emphasize the importance of nonlinear effects.

Nonlinear effects due to fluid film bearings become significant when vibratory amplitudes are large. To include these effects in rotor dynamic analysis requires conducting time-transient response analysis, where the fluid film forces are estimated at each time step. The present paper describes an approach where a unique treatment of bearing forces results in an efficient computational scheme for performing time transient analysis. The method developed is applicable to a flexible-rotor system with multi-degrees of freedom. A study conducted on a canned annulus motor pump using tilting pad bearings for the rotor support is described in this paper. The results showed severe loading at the bearings due to the canned annulus forces. Nonlinear effects due to the bearings were found only at large rotor unbalance loads.

New large-scale laboratory data are presented on a physical model of a spar buoy wind turbine with angular motion of control surfaces implemented (pitch control). The peculiarity of this type of rotating blade represents an essential aspect when studying floating offshore wind structures. Experiments were designed specifically to compare different operational environmental conditions in terms of wave steepness and wind speed. Results discussed here were derived from an analysis of only a part of the whole dataset. Consistent with recent small-scale experiments, data clearly show that the waves contributed to most of the model motions and mooring loads. A significant nonlinear behavior for sway, roll and yaw has been detected, whereas an increase in the wave period makes the wind speed less influential for surge, heave and pitch. In general, as the steepness increases, the oscillations decrease. However, higher wind speed does not mean greater platform motions. Data also indicate a significant role of the blade rotation in the turbine thrust, nacelle dynamic forces and power in six degrees of freedom. Certain pairs of wind speed-wave steepness are particularly unfavorable, since the first harmonic of the rotor (coupled to the first wave harmonic) causes the thrust force to be larger than that in more energetic sea states. The experiments suggest that the inclusion of pitch-controlled, variable-speed blades in physical (and numerical) tests on such types of structures is crucial, highlighting the importance of pitch motion as an important design factor.

Wood modification is now widely recognized as offering enhanced properties of wood and overcoming issues such as dimensional instability and biodegradability which affect natural wood. Typical wood modification systems use chemical modification, impregnation modification or thermal modification, and these vary in the properties achieved. As control and understanding of the wood modification systems has progressed, further opportunities have arisen to add extra functionalities to the modified wood. These include UV stabilisation, fire retardancy, or enhanced suitability for paints and coatings. Thus, wood may become a multi-functional material through a series of modifications, treatments or reactions, to create a high-performance material with previously impossible properties. In this paper we review systems that combine the well-established wood modification procedures with secondary techniques or modifications to deliver emerging technologies with multi-functionality. The new applications targeted using this additional functionality are diverse and range from increased electrical conductivity, creation of sensors or responsive materials, improvement of wellbeing in the built environment, and enhanced fire and flame protection. We identified two parallel and connected themes: (1) the functionalisation of modified timber and (2) the modification of timber to provide (multi)-functionality. A wide range of nanotechnology concepts have been harnessed by this new generation of wood modifications and wood treatments. As this field is rapidly expanding, we also include within the review trends from current research in order to gauge the state of the art, and likely direction of travel of the industry.

The maintenance of large aging infrastructure across the world creates serious technical, environmental, and economic challenges. Ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced concretes (UHPFRC) are a new generation of materials with outstanding mechanical properties as well as very high durability due to their extremely low permeability. These properties open new horizons for the sustainable rehabilitation of aging concrete structures. Since UHPFRC is a young and evolving material, codes are still either lacking or incomplete, with recent design provisions proposed in France, Switzerland, Japan, and Australia. However, engineers and public agencies around the world need resources to study, model, and rehabilitate structures using UHPFRC. As an effort to contribute to the efficient use of this promising material, this paper presents a new numerical modelling approach for UHPFRC-strengthened concrete members. The approach is based on the Diverse Embedment Model within the global framework of the Disturbed Stress Field Model, a smeared rotating-crack formulation for 2D modelling of reinforced concrete structures. This study presents an adapted version of the DEM in order to capture the behaviour of UHPFRC by using a small number of input parameters. The model is validated with tension tests from the literature and is then used to model UHPFRC-strengthened elements. The paper will discuss the formulation of the model and will provide validation studies with various tests of beams, columns and walls from the literature. These studies will demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modelling approach.

This paper presents an improved design, complete analysis, and prototype development of high torque-to-mass ratio Magneto-Rheological (MR) clutches. The proposed MR clutches are intended as the main actuation mechanism of a robotic manipulator with five degrees of freedom. Multiple steps to increase the toque-to-mass ratio of the clutch are evaluated and implemented in one design. First, we focus on the Hall sensors’ configuration. Our proposed MR clutches feature embedded Hall sensors for the indirect torque measurement. A new arrangement of the sensors with no effect on the magnetic reluctance of the clutch is presented. Second, we improve the magnetization of the MR clutch. We utilize a new hybrid design that features a combination of an electromagnetic coil and a permanent magnet for improved torque-to-mass ratio. Third, the gap size reduction in the hybrid MR clutch is introduced and the effect of such reduction on maximum torque and the dynamic range of MR clutch is investigated. Finally, the design for a pair of MR clutches with a shared magnetic core for antagonistic actuation of the robot joint is presented and experimentally validated. The details of each approach are discussed and the results of the finite element analysis are used to highlight the required engineering steps and to demonstrate the improvements achieved. Using the proposed design, several prototypes of the MR clutch with various torque capacities ranging from 15 to 200 N·m are developed, assembled, and tested. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed design and validate the accuracy of the analysis used for the development.

The development of a new generation of high performance gas turbine engines requires gas turbines to be operated at very high inlet temperatures, which are much higher than the allowable metal temperatures. Consequently, this necessitates the need for advanced cooling techniques. Among the numerous cooling technologies, the film cooling technology has superior advantages and relatively favorable application prospect. The recent research progress of film cooling techniques for gas turbine blade is reviewed and basic principle of film cooling is also illustrated. Progress on rotor blade and stationary blade of film cooling are introduced. Film cooling development of leading-edge was also generalized. Effect of various factor on cooling effectiveness and effect of the shape of the injection holes on plate film cooling are discussed. In addition, with respect to progress of discharge coefficient is presented. In the last, the future development trend and future investigation direction of film cooling are prospected.

This paper describes the results of a study into the dynamic behavior of a magnetic bearing system. The research focuses attention on the influence of nonlinearities on the forced response of a two-degree-of-freedom rotating mass suspended by magnetic bearings and subject to rotating unbalance and feedback control. Geometric coupling between the degrees of freedom leads to a pair of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are then solved using both numerical simulation and approximate analytical techniques. The system exhibits a variety of interesting and somewhat unexpected phenomena including various amplitude driven bifurcational events, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the complete loss of stability associated with the escape from the potential well in which the system can be thought to be oscillating. An approximate criterion to avoid this last possibility is developed based on concepts of limiting the response of the system. The present paper may be considered as an extension to an earlier study by the same authors, which described the practical context of the work, free vibration, control aspects, and derivation of the mathematical model.

The transit motion and the rotating motion have highly different effects in a technical systems and have almost nonlinear system behaviors. For the descriptions of their dynamical causes and effects on system, the physical information, which is concerned as a nonlinear mathematic model, has been used. But the corresponding equations are generally not easy to solve in complete form or their solutions are so complicated to see through the coherence. A common way to settle such a problem is to linearize system exactly in a state space or on a operating points with Taylor's series approximately. An advanced method to an approximation is a bilinear system that offers global separations principle. In this paper, an extended application of this theory is given in a modeling and control on the electro hydrostatic cylinder driver with both the transit and rotating motions for the keel system that mostly have not only advantage of high performance, small volume of building and weight but also high nonlinear behavior.

Multiple high speed CMOS cameras composing intersection system to splice large effect field of view(EFV). The key problem of system is how to locate multiple CMOS cameras in suitable position. Effect field of view was determined according to size, quantity and dispersion area of objects, so to determine camera position located on below, both sides and ahead to moving targets. This paper analyzes effect splicing field of view, operating range etc through establishing mathematical model and MATLAB simulation. Location method of system has advantage of flexibility splicing, convenient adjustment, high reliability and high performance-price ratio.
