ABSTRACTZambia's unsuccessful coup attempt in 1980 was initiated by members of the country's intellectual and business elite, who had played a leading role in the postcolonial civil service and state bureaucracy, but who became disillusioned with the takeover of the state by the ruling party before and after the declaration of the one-party state in 1972. Among their number was Valentine Musakanya, one of those convicted for the coup attempt. Using Musakanya's biographical and other writings, this article explores his intellectual trajectory from head of the civil service to political prisoner. In so doing, it investigates the role of life writing in aiding understanding of the postcolonial political history of Africa.

Industrial structures are cultural legacy sites in need of protection that carry the social, cultural, historical and architectural properties of their respective eras into the present day. Due to the changing production demands and technology, these structures lost their usage value and have been rendered obsolete. The interventions implemented and new functions provided to ensure the continuity of industrial structures must be in accordance with the character of the building. Our study focuses on the renovation process of one of the first industrial premises of the city of İzmir Alsancak Tekel Storages located in Port Rear Area. Industrial building history in the region dates back to the 1900s, when industrial and storage structures have been built. A new master development plan that entered into force in 1989, conserning the fate of these industrial buildings. As the result of the passed legislation, old tekel storages have been transformed to offices and cultural centres. In the scope of this study the changes that occurred in order to refunction the Alsancak Tekel Storages have been inspected. As a method, a detailed literature review of the history of the region was made, and data on the buildings examined before and after the restoration were collected. As a result, the region’s historical development, status of the buildings before the restoration, architectural quality of the buildings after the restoration and role of the buildings in relation to the city have all been examined and collected data were evaluated comparatively.

This book examines history and thought “before and after Muhammad” by offering a new perspective on the debate about “the West and the Rest,” about America's destiny and Europe's identity. One party explains how Europe and eventually North America—the North Atlantic world—left the rest in the dust from about 1500. The other side argues that Asia—China, Japan, and the Islamic trio of Mughals, Safavids, and Ottomans—remained largely free of European encroachment until the mid-1700s, but then either collapsed for internal reasons, or else were gradually undermined by colonial powers' superior technological, economic, and military power. In seeking to overhaul the foundations of this debate, especially as regards the role of Islam and the Islamic world, the book reformulates the history of the First Millennium, by the end of which Islam had matured sufficiently to be compared with patristic Christianity, in order to fit Islam into it. The book draws primarily on Edward Gibbon's account of East Rome and Islam.

Creative preaching as visualisation of old and new things with particular reference to ecclesiastical discourses as enrichment of the act of listening. Ecclesiastical praxis indicates that preaching faces obstacles caused by the dreariness of sermons, regardless of the good intentions of preachers. There is a vast difference between hearing sermons and listening to sermons in a creative manner. Preachers should equip themselves to be more creative in the preparation and delivery of sermons. Creative preaching opens up new perspectives to hearers. In the light of this problematic praxis, the following research question has been formulated: To what extent do preachers equip their listeners in a dialogue situation to listen creatively in a profound manner with the objective to see clearly what the Word of God demands of them? In order to address this research question, the problem is investigated by taking into account the present Practical Theological vantage points concerning this field and by trying to get a grasp on metatheoretical perspectives from the fields of Social Psychology and the History of Art. The author investigates the challenging process of creative preaching as well as the importance of equipping hearers in becoming participants in the preparation of sermons through the process of ecclesiastical and sermon discussions. Perspectives from 2 Samuel 17 and Matthew 13:13–15, 52 will be explored with regard to the role of creativity in preaching. The conclusion is reached that a lack in creative preaching and commitment to the act of preaching are indeed endangering this ecclesiastical praxis. It may even be the cause of listeners leaving the church. Preachers should utilise creativity in preparing their sermons and should also focus on the custom of sermon discussions before and after delivering their sermons. In addition, preachers should endeavour to stimulate feedback of the sermons, for in this way fallacious views of reality could be rectified. Congregations should become discussant communities nurtured through profound communication.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Cardiovascular events (CVE) remain the leading cause of mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. The ability to assess the risk of short-term CVE is of great importance. Soluble suppression of tumorogenicity-2 (sST2) is a novel biomarker that better stratifies risk of CVE than troponins in patients with heart failure. Few studies have investigated the role of sST2 in the HD population. The aim of this single-center study was to assess the predictive ability of sST2 on CVE in comparison to high-sensitive cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in HD patients. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> This study used a prospective, observational cohort design. We enrolled 40 chronic HD patients asymptomatic for chest pain and without recent history of acute coronary syndrome. We tested sST2 pre-/post-HD, hs-cTnI, and BNP. Demographic/dialytic/echocardiographic data were evaluated. We recorded the number of CVE for 12 months. The patients were classified into 2 groups: those who developed CVE and those who did not. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Ten of the 40 patients (25%) developed CVE during a 12-month follow-up. Increased sST2 levels (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.0001) as well as hs-cTnI and BNP are predictive of CVE. When analyzing biomarkers as binary variables for values above or below the normal range, the correlation remained significant only for sST2 (<i>p</i> = 0.001). A small variation in sST2 levels before and after HD sessions was found (−2.1 ng/mL). sST2 was correlated with left ventricular (LV) echocardiographic data: LV mass index (<i>p</i> = 0.0001), LV ejection fraction (<i>p</i> = 0.01), and diastolic bulging of septum (<i>p</i> = 0.015). BNP and sST2 combination increased the prediction of CVE in a statistical model. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Our study confirms that sST2 is useful for stratifying CV risk in the HD population. sST2 can be evaluated simply as a dichotomous value higher or lower than the normal range, making it easily interpretable. Dialysis and residual diuresis did not affect significantly sST2. A multimarker approach that incorporates sST2 and BNP may improve the prediction of CVE.

Kitab Musarar is one of the famous works of Syaikh Subakir described the condition of Java both before and after the arrival of Syaikh Subakir in the 13th century in Java on the mission of Islamization. This study uses a qualitative research method based on the Kitab Musarar which has been rewritten in an old spelling Indonesian translation printed book titled Kitab Musarar Syaikh Subakir-Asal Muasal Tanah Jawa karya Sukri (2011) and the book of Melacak Jejak Syaikh Subakir: Riwayat Penumbalan Tanah Jawa dan Walisanga Generasi Pertama written by Romadhon (2017). The results of this study are: (1) The existence of the early history of the world until the entry of Islam in Java in the 13th century in the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir, (2) The existence of figures who played a role of rukyat in Java in the 13th century based on the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir, and (3) The story of sangsara era and Ratu Adil profil in the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir. Overall, it can be seen that there are traces of Javanese Islamization brought by Syaikh Subakir in the 13th century based on the Kitab Musarar.

Purpose The authors said there had been no previous research into the relationship between ostracism and workplace disclosure of sexual harassment. But reports of sexual harassment are common. In the US, more than 12,000 employees file sexual harassment claims with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission annually. Design/methodology/approach The author reviewed the history of ostracism, then looked at how the #MeToo movement is helping to undermine the stigmas around disclosing sexual harassment Findings The authors suggest that targets of ostracism benefit from the support of online communities of the #MeToo movement. They provide an alternative inclusive environment for people who are deprived of the sense of belongingness at work. Originality/value The researchers called on leaders and HR professionals to examine the role of ostracism in their organizational cultures and take steps to mitigate its power. The authors also want their paper to serve as a call for experimental research on the link between sexual harassment and ostracism.

ABSTRACTOver 52,000 Roman coins have been recorded and published from Wales. Using this comprehensive numismatic sample, this article investigates how coins of different metals and denominations were used and lost in western Britain during the later Iron Age and early Roman periods. The analysis of coins from hoards, excavated sites and single finds produces a more detailed picture of coin supply and use in Roman Britain than has been the case in the past and, consequently, it is now possible to provide a relatively sophisticated description of the monetization of Wales in the decades immediately before and after the conquest in the later first century A.D. The complexities of the early numismatic history of Wales are explored using a series of chronological and regional case-studies, while the discussion emphasises the role of native traditions in shaping local responses to the appearance of coinage and the foreign practices associated with using Roman imperial currency.

The introduction offers a ‘global’ survey of the history of communism not only in the geographical sense but also in the sense of seeking to integrate history from above and history from below, social and cultural with political and economic history. The first half offers a synoptic view of the history of communist revolutions before and after 1945, highlighting the tensions between ‘intentionalist’ interpretations that stress human agency and political will and structuralist interpretations that stress the role of impersonal forces. It traces the way in which the meaning of the Russian Revolution was revised in the 1920s from being a mass revolution involving soviet power and radical equality to one concerned with the state mobilization of the human and material resources of a backward society to bring about economic, social, and military modernization. The second half looks at a number of major issues relating to the political, economic, and social history of communism in power. In respect of politics, these include the role of ideology in politics, the relationship of informal to formal political practices, the relationship of ‘neo-traditional’ to modern political practices, and the problem of bureaucracy. In respect of the economy, they include the relationship of the planned economy to the ‘second economy’, difficulties of economic reform, and the shift towards meeting the needs of the consumer from the 1950s. In respect of social aspects, the essay stresses the importance of non-state-directed social processes in shaping the development of communist societies, the reconstitution of forms of social inequality, ideas of cultural revolution, and policy towards women and national minorities. While not attempting to summarize historiography, the introduction seeks to give readers a sense of issues currently under debate.

This study deals with the impact of party affiliation on the rise of the phenomenon of divorce in Zanzibar. It also provides a historical overview of the entry of Islam, its economy and history of political parties before and after independence of the country. Pointing to the high rate of divorce in Zanzibar, this study identifies major reasons behind it, which include affiliation to various political parties, discrimination based on the variances of islands, ignorance about religious teachings, inefficient knowledge about the purposes of familial relationships, regional chauvinism and political party racism. The statement of the problem in this research is that in contrast to rest of countries, the high rate of divorce phenomenon in Zanzibar is repercussion of the affiliation to various political parties and belonging to different islands. Likewise, this study digs out the motives of this problem which causes the disintegration of families and its solutions in light of maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah. This research contains three chapters. The first chapter analyses the history of advent of Islam and political parties to Zanzibar; second chapter deliberates on consequence of political affiliation in the rise of divorce rate in Zanzibar and third chapter discusses the role of maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah in reducing the occurrence of divorce because of party and regional affiliations.
