3MT (Three-minute thesis) presentations, in which students communicate their theses to non-specialist audiences within three minutes, have emerged as an important academic genre, echoing current practices in scientific communication where researchers report their research work to a heterogeneous audience. Although increasing attention has been paid to 3MT presentations, we still lack sufficient knowledge of how presenters should communicate disciplinary knowledge to a wide audience. To address this gap, this corpus-based study investigates the rhetorical organization of moves (i.e. discoursal units serving various coherent communicative functions in text) in 80 3MT presentations from six disciplines. It is found that orientation, rationale, purpose, methods and results are five obligatory moves, among which the results move comprises more than one-fifth of the total length. The rationale and results moves are more often applied in hard sciences than in soft knowledge fields. The findings shed light on advanced academic literacy and how students communicate disciplinary knowledge to a wide audience.

A number of clinical studies have revealed that there is an association between major depression (MD) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Both the diseases are shown to affect a large proportion of the global population. More advanced studies for understanding the comorbidity mechanism of these two diseases can shed light on developing new therapies of both diseases. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any research work in the literature investigating the relationship between MD and GERD using their miRNA biomarkers. We adopt a phylogenetic analysis to analyze their miRNA biomarkers. From our analyzed results, the association between these two diseases can be explored through miRNA phylogeny. In addition to evidence from the phylogenetic analysis, we also demonstrate epidemiological evidence for the relationship between MD and GERD based on Taiwan biobank data.

This research work is part of a project to get an M.A. degree. Some of the linguistic sciences specialized in the search for meaning in the text, such as semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and etc. will be clarified. Besides, we shed light on the elements of semantic analysis with examples according to the basic scheme theory of reference, which indicates that the language is of a fictional nature. As it is a variety of similarity and symmetry relations between the form of the word and its meaning, whether it is phonetic or written or related to metaphor, metonymy or analogy, and it is not a random relationship. In all these genres, a very important role is played by imaginative comprehension, which subsequently acquires a traditional character and spreads due to the common collective understanding of the word among speakers of the speech community.

Annotation. Introduction. In today’s rapidly evolving Internet, new opportunities are emerging for scientific communication among scientists around the world. The dissemination of scientific ideas in society through the media is a daily norm abroad. In Ukraine, the attitude of the research community towards the promotion of scientific research still raises many questions: it is rather wary. For the even development of Ukrainian science, scientists need to cover the results of their work to a wide audience, communicate with press services and journalists and disseminate their ideas in society. With the emergence of new more effective ways and forms of scientific communication through Internet resources and relevant platforms, the creation of new information and scientific technologies, there is a need for state support of scientific activities, communication in Ukraine and ensuring the appropriate level of copyright protection of these scientists, developers etc. Purpose. The main purpose of the study is to monitor the state and trends of scientific communication in Ukraine in modern conditions and to develop recommendations for its further development. Results. The analysis of development of scientific communication in Ukraine is carried out. The definition of the concept of scientific communication is indicated. The process of scientific communication is schematically presented. The most common classification of scientific communication is given. The significance of the created National Research Fund of Ukraine for scientists and science in general is noted. The dynamics of the number of employees involved in the implementation of research and development, who have the degree of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The analysis of the employees number by level of education is involved in the implementation of research and development. Conclusions. We are convinced that the improvement of the support mechanism for Ukrainian science, scientists and scientists by the state will help to minimize the possible risks and dangers associated with copyright infringement and the decline of domestic science in general. This research work is dedicated to a topical theme from the science’s point of view. The main goals are to study the role of competitions in history tournaments for students in the development of scientific communication in the process of studying at university. The experimental part of the study included 130 respondents: 100 students as participants of tournament competitions and 30 jury members who evaluated the tournament games and participated in the study of this innovative phenomenon. To determine the effectiveness of tournament competitions and their role in the development of scientific communication, an observation method was used to identify the feelings and behaviour of tournament participants at different stages of the game. The comparative method was used to identify the peculiarities of tournament competitions in the system of competitions, contests held in Ukraine. The survey method was used to identify the level of achievement of participants during the tournament and the impact of tournament competitions on further study and research activities of students. The results of the study proved to be an important factor in the development of scientific communication among students. This fact caused the ability of student’s youth to work in a team and to carry out scientific research and protect own ideas. As a result of the study, it was discovered that students who studied the science themes prior to the tournament and participated in tournament competitions (public defence and opposition) had significantly higher levels of academic achievement than their classmates. A good deal of students noted that during the tournament competitions they communicated with jury members (scholars from all over Ukraine) and got much historical information according to important achievements in historical science, new ideas and concepts, little-known historians so far. According to the results of the study, it was recommended to create a scientific discussion colloquium among students who are interested in investigating science of domestic and foreign scholars.

Variation in the genre of research articles has been extensively studied across different disciplines and languages; however, diachronic change and intradisciplinary variation in this academic genre have received less attention. Therefore this paper aims to shed light on change and variation in research articles within a multidisciplinary field of research by focusing on the use of that-complement clause constructions which are known to mark stance. The corpus-based study uses tourism studies as an example, and covers the time span from 1995 to 2010. Diachronic change in the use of that-complement clause constructions was found in instances when they are marked by a verb as well as in the kinds of stance meanings conveyed. Significant intradisciplinary variation was also found across the journals.

Journalism branches arise in accordance with development of society and its needs. Society, people, and professions are undergoing systematic transformation. Scientific journalism performs with its distinctive characteristics. First, it changes and organized by the achievements of science and education. Second, the success factors of science journalism have a normative, legal, and practical basis. Third, scientific journalism has a combined function of connecting the scientific community and public. The promotion of scientific achievements is jointly carried out by professional journalists and the scientific community. Therefore, the elaboration of scientific information is important for a good perception of the content by a wide audience. The cognitive level of the scientific journalist helps him to freely use scientific theories along with other sources. The author considers that such activities should not end with the publication of scientific results by a journalist. For a journalist, high-quality publication of research results is an integral part of the success of scientific communication. The study concludes that the degree of success in scientific communication depends on several factors, including the cognitive and professional level of a journalist.

Working from the premise that mathematics knowledge can be described as a complex unity, we develop the suggestion that network theory provides a useful frame for informing understandings of disciplinary knowledge and content learning for schooling. Specifically, we use network theory to analyze associations among mathematical concepts, focusing on their embodied nature and their reliance on metaphor. After describing some of the basic suppositions, we examine the structure of the network of metaphors that underlies embodied mathematics, the dynamics of this network, and the effect of these dynamics on mathematical understanding. Finally, implications for classroom teaching and curriculum are discussed. We conjecture that it is both instructive and important to use the network structure of mathematical knowledge to shed light on both cognition in mathematics and on mathematics education.

The study examines the communicative functions that handwriting (mode) and paper (medium) have come to serve in increasingly digital and intermedial environments. The study begins in museums, where handwritten documents are profusely on display nowadays, and where the display affordances and communicative functions of handwriting are productively explored. Three curatorial display strategies are outlined. These are arranged chronologically, and range from traditional displays, where paper documents are presented inside glass cases, through artistic installations, where documents and handwriting are aesthetically simulated, to interactives, where the audiences/users themselves generate documents on-site. Exploring these strategies illuminates the concept of display as an agentic amalgamation of showing and telling, which produces authentic performances of voice-as-participation. These performances facilitate a move from private to public spheres – in museums and online. The study then proceeds to examine public displays of handwritten documents outside museums, specifically on social network sites. It asks whether and how conceptual sensitivities and sensibilities that originated in displays of handwritten artifacts in museums can shed light on the newer communicative functions of paper in digital environments. It also asks what are the intermedial consequences of the juxtaposition of analogue and digital surfaces. The study points at the current resurrection of handwriting and paper. It argues that the popularity of paper and handwriting results from their evolution into ubiquitous resources for display on and off the web, specifically as authentic bearers of voice that index human action and agency.
