Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial disease involving inflammatory processes. Platelets play important roles in both hemostasis and the inflammatory response; however, the relationship between platelet count and OA is unclear. Our aim was to evaluate the association between platelet count and knee and hip OA in Korean women. Methods: In this cross-sectional designed study, we included a total of 6011 women aged ⩾50 years from the 2010–2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Knee and hip OA were defined as Kellgren–Lawrence grade ⩾2 and presence of knee or hip pain, respectively. Platelet counts were divided into quartiles as follows: Q1, 150–212 (103/µl); Q2, 213–246 (103/µl); Q3, 247–283 (103/µl); and Q4, 284–450 (103/µl). Multiple logistic-regression analysis was conducted to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the optimal platelet count cut-off with which to discriminate participants with knee and/hip OA versus those without OA. Results: Of the 6011 participants, 1141 (18.1%) had knee or hip OA. The mean age of participants without OA was 60.6 years, and that of participants with OA was 68.0 years. Compared with the lowest quartile, odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for OA were 1.08 (0.84–1.39) for Q2, 0.94 (0.73–1.23) for Q3, and 1.35 (1.08–1.69) for Q4 after adjusting for confounders. The prevalence of OA was significantly higher with platelet counts ⩾288 × 103/µl, compared with platelet counts <288 × 103/µl. Conclusion: High platelet counts within the normal range are significantly associated with knee and hip OA.

Platelet and leukocyte count reference intervals (RIs) for cattle differ by age and while adult RIs are known, RIs for calves are studied less. The aims of this observational study are to evaluate variation of platelet counts of Holstein Friesian calves over the first 14 days of life and to propose RIs for platelet and leukocyte counts of Holstein Friesian calves aged 0–60 days. In a longitudinal study, 19 calves were blood sampled 17 times, in the first 14 days of their lives. Blood was collected in a citrate blood tube and platelet counts were determined. We assessed the course of platelet counts. In a field study, 457 healthy calves were blood sampled once. Blood was collected in an EDTA blood tube and platelet and leukocyte counts were determined. The RIs were calculated by the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles. Platelet counts started to increase 24 h after birth (mean platelet count 381 × 109/L ± 138 × 109/L) and stabilized after five days (mean platelet count 642 × 109/L ± 265 × 109/L). In calves up to six days of age, platelet counts were lower than in calves older than five days. In conclusion, the RIs of platelet and leukocyte counts in calves were wider in range than the RIs for adult cattle, therefore, calf specific RIs for platelet and leukocyte counts should be used. From 6 until 60 days of age, we propose an RI for platelet counts of 287–1372 × 109/L and for the first 60 days of life an RI for leukocyte counts of 4.0–18.9 × 109/L.

Sex hormone changes in adults are known to play a part in aging, including cognitive aging. Dietary intake of phytoestrogens can mimic estrogenic effects on brain function. Since sex hormones differ between genders, it is important to examine gender differences in the phytoestrogen–cognition association. Therefore, the goal of this study is to examine the relationship between urinary phytoestrogens and speed of processing (SOP) and the variation of the association between genders in older adults. Participants were drawn from the 1999–2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included 354 individuals aged 65–85 years old. General linear models (GLMs) were used to test for significant gender differences in the relationship between phytoestrogens and SOP. Results from the GLMs showed significant gender differences in the relationship between genistein and SOP. Higher levels of genistein were associated with better SOP in women. This relationship was reversed in men: higher genistein levels were associated with worse performance. Results indicate that there are distinct gender differences in the relationship between genistein and SOP. These results emphasize the importance of considering gender differences when devising dietary and pharmacologic interventions that target phytoestrogens to improve brain health.

To date, the relationship between alcohol use and dating app use has been investigated mostly in conjunction with sexual activities and in homosexual men. For this reason, the aim of this study was to explore the association between dating app use and alcohol consumption among the general population. A cross-sectional study was conducted including app users, non-users, and former users: 1278 respondents completed an online ad hoc questionnaire assessing dating app use, motivations for installing dating apps, alcohol use, and demographics. Multiple logistic regression analysis was run to investigate the association between dating app use, demographic features, and alcohol consumption. Whereas educational level, age, and gender significantly contributed to the regular consumption of alcohol, dating app use did not account for a significant amount of variance between regular and not regular drinkers. However, people who installed and used dating apps with the motivation of searching for sexual partners were more likely to be regular drinkers. Among the active users, heavy app users were less likely to drink regularly. The study indicates that underlying factors (sexual aspects, motives for using the apps) and the intensity of using the apps may mediate the relationship between dating app use and alcohol use.

Background: It has been reported that people with teeth loss have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, there is limited evidence for the specific relationship between remained teeth and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Method: Among subjects who participated in Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2008-2013, a total of 12,612 adults with mean age of 60.2±1.2 years old were analyzed. Number of teeth was classified as number less than 20, from 20 to 27 and more than 27. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between cardiovascular disease and remained teeth number after adjusting for potential confounders. Result: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease was 6.5%, 3.3% and 1.4% respectively in groups having number less than 20, 20 to 27 and more than 27 ( P < 0.001). Total number of cardiovascular disease was 666. Diabetes, hypertension, total cholesterol level, waist circumference, metabolic syndrome had large proportion in a group having less than 20 teeth ( P < 0.001). People having less than 20 remained teeth had statistically significant cardiovascular disease after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, drinking alcohol, exercise, education, income status, stress, diabetes, and hypertension. A group having less 20 teeth was likely to have statistically significant relationship with cardiovascular disease. (Odds ratio [OR]: 1.41, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.06-1.89) and stroke (OR:1.90, CI:1.03-3.48). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the number of remained teeth could be a useful additional indicator for assessing cardiovascular disease and stroke

Background. Studies on serum uric acid (sUA) levels and hypertension (HTN) are controversial. To investigate the association between the sUA level and the incident of HTN in middle-aged and elderly adults, we performed this study. Methods. 6399 participants aged ≥40 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Weighted multiple logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the sUA level and the incident of HTN, exploring the potential nonlinear relationship using the fitted smoothing curves. If nonlinearity was observed, the inflection point was further calculated by a recursive algorithm. Results. A positive relationship between the sUA level and the incident of HTN was found. However, it may differ in different race groups, nor between male and female. Moreover, the association between the sUA level and the incident of HTN followed a U-shaped curve in male (turning point: sUA 4.1 mg/dL) and Whites (turning point: sUA 7.9 mg/dL). Conclusions. The results revealed that the sUA level is positively correlated with the incident of HTN, in middle-aged and elderly adults. However, it followed a U-shaped curve in males and Whites.

AbstractBackground:Although a number of studies have examined the relationship between depression and obesity, it is still insufficient to establish the specific pattern of relationship between depression and body mass index (BMI) categories. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the relationship between depression and BMI categories.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted for a cohort of 159,390 Korean based on Kangbuk Samsung Health Study (KSHS). Study participants were classified into 5 groups by Asian-specific cut-off of BMI (18.5, 23, 25 and 30 kg/m2). The presence of depression was determined by Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scales (CES-D) = 16 and = 25. The adjusted odd ratios (ORs) for depression were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis, in which independent variable was 5 categories of BMI and dependent variable was depression. Subgroup analysis was conducted by gender and age.Results:When normal group was set as a reference, the adjusted ORs for depression formed U-shaped pattern of relationship with BMI categories [underweight: 1.31 (1.14–1.50), overweight: 0.94 (0.85–1.04), obese group: 1.01 (0.91–1.12), severe obese group: 1.28 (1.05–1.54)]. This pattern of relationship was more prominent in female and young age group than male and elderly subgroup. BMI level with the lowest likelihood of depression was 18.5 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2 in women and 23 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2 in men.Conclusions:There was a U-shaped relationship between depression and BMI categories. This finding suggests that both underweight and severe obesity are associated with the increased risk for depression.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate the association between waist circumference and the prevalence of (pre) hypertension.Methods: Cross-sectional data from the 2007–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. The historical trend of abdominal obesity was assessed by the Cochran–Armitage trend test. After preprocessed by the multiple imputation strategy, we used generalized additive models to assess the association of waist circumference with systolic/diastolic blood pressure and performed correlation analysis by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Moreover, we used multivariable logistic regression (non-adjusted, minimally adjusted, and fully adjusted models), restricted cubic spline, and sensitivity analysis to investigate the association between waist circumference and (pre) hypertension.Results: A total of 27,894 participants were included in this study. In the fully adjusted model, waist circumference was positively associated with (pre) hypertension with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.28 (1.18–1.40) in the young group and 1.23 (1.15–1.33) in the old group. Restricted cubic spline showed a higher prevalence of (pre) hypertension with the increase of waist circumference. In the subgroup analysis, waist circumference showed a robust trend across all BMI categories with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 3.33 (1.29–8.85), 1.35 (1.17–1.57), 1.27 (1.13–1.41), and 1.09 (1.01–1.17) in underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese individuals, respectively.Conclusion: This study highlighted waist circumference as a significant biomarker to evaluate the risk of (pre) hypertension. Our results supported the measure of waist circumference regardless of BMI when evaluating the cardiometabolic risk related to fat distribution.

Abstract : Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an infectious disease caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. DHF affects children tend to further increase the morbidity and mortality that needed more attention, both clinical symptoms and laboratory results. In laboratory hemoglobin levels and platelet counts normal weight changes corresponding degree of illness. This research was an analytic retrospective with a cross-sectional. Data sources were secondary data from medical records at BLU RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado. Samples were obtained 56 patients who met the inclusion criteria DHF of the total population sample of 137 patients. The results of the data obtained is then processed into statistical data using parametric test (Pearson test) for found the relationship between hemoglobin levels with platelet counts with α = 0,05. . It was found that there was no relationship between hemoglobin levels with platelet counts (p=0,097). Conclusion In this study there was no significant correlation between hemoglobin levels with platelet counts in DHF.Keywords: dengue hemorrhagic fever, hemoglobin levels, platelet counts.Abstrak: Demam berdarah dengue merupakan penyakit infeksi yang disebabkan oleh virus dengue dan ditularkan oleh nyamuk Aedes. DBD yang menyerang anak-anak cenderung lebih meningkatkan morbiditas dan mortalitas sehingga diperlukan perhatian lebih, baik pada gejala klinis maupun hasil laboratorium. Pada pemeriksaan laboratorium kadar hemoglobin dan jumlah trombosit biasa mengalami perubahan. Penelitian ini bersifat analitik retrospektif dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Sumber data merupakan data sekunder dari rekam medik Depertemen Ilmu Kesehatan Anak di BLU RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D Kandou Manado. Sampel penilitian diperoleh 56 pasien DBD yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi dari total populasi sampel 137 pasien. Hasil penelitian diuji menggunakan uji parametrik (Uji Pearson), untuk mengetahui hubungan kadar hemoglobin dengan jumlah trombosit dengan α = 0,05. Uji Pearson menunjukkan tidak ada hubungan antara kadar hemoglobin dengan jumlah trombosit (p=0,097). Disimpulkan bahwa tidak ada hubungan antara kadar hemoglobin dengan jumlah trombosit.Kata Kunci: demam berdarah dengue, hemoglobin, trombosit
