Background: The epidemiological and nutritional transition processes in the last decades underlie the rising trend of obesity in the elderly and is related to increased risk of chronic non-communicable diseases and decreased functional status. Objective: To analyze the association of demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle and health-related factors with overweight and obesity in elderly. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Carried out in Campinas-São Paulo, Brazil, in 2011. Participants: 452 non-institutionalized elderly (aged ≥60 years), half were users of a government-run soup kitchen and the other half were neighbors of the same sex. Results:Overweight frequency (BMI ≥25 and <30 kg/m2) was 44.5% and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) was 21.7%. In the multiple multinomial logistic regression model adjusted for sex, age group and economic class, there was greater chance of overweight among those that reported dyslipidemia; those that reported arthritis/ arthrosis/rheumatism and that once or more per week replaced supper by a snack were more likely to be obese. Elderly who did not leave home daily and reported diabetes had higher chance of overweight and obesity. Conclusions: Overweight and obesity are associated with worse living and health-related conditions, such as physical inactivity, changes in eating behaviors, and chronic diseases. Public health policies should encourage regular physical activity and healthy eating behaviors, focusing on traditional diet, through nutritional education, in order to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity and chronic diseases.

Institutionalization of elderly Indians seems to have been increasing with the aging of the twentieth century. This paper looks at Indian thought and cultural practice with regard to the elderly in time perspective.  Historically, although the main prescription to cultural practice and respect for the elderly came from the various Indian Scriptures, this was coloured by the specific needs of each society which changed when these societies were nomadic, settled farmers or were actively engaged in war. Later other factors like industrialization resulted in a breakdown of the extended family in which the father no matter how old or productive was the authority figure who demanded respect. This trend was also seen in published literature about the attitude of other nationalities towards their elderly. Health professionals have been grappling with the role of health care workers in achieving successful patients outcomes based on attitudes towards the elderly. More work needs to be done on this subject in this country.

Summary Objective: This study aims to describe the profile of medical schools that introduced courses on Geriatrics and Elderly Health or Aging in their curriculum, and compare such information with the age distribution and health epidemiological data of the Brazilian population, using data until the year of 2013. Methods: 180 universities offering medical undergraduate courses and registered with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Brazil (MEC) were found, as seen on the MEC website (www.emec.mec.gov.br) in February 2013. Based on the list of institutions, the authors created a database. Results: Brazil's Southeast region is the one presenting most of the courses, both offered as core or elective subjects, in the area of Geriatrics. The Midwest region had the least offer of Geriatrics and Elderly Health and Care courses. The Southeast region presents the greater absolute number of institutions with elective subjects, followed by the South and Northeast regions, each with a single institution. The Southeast region was at the same time the one that presented the biggest absolute number of institutions offering core subjects in the area of Geriatrics, being followed by the Northeast, South, North, and Midwest regions. Conclusion: By analyzing the availability of courses that emphasize aging and Geriatrics in brazilian medical schools, the present study reveals that specialized training should be encouraged with respect to the specificities of health care given to the elderly population, which has a higher frequency of chronic and degenerative diseases.

Background: The prevalence of gout increased based on age, highest at age 70-79 years 9.3%, age 60-69 years 8%, age 50-59 years 3.7%, and age 40-49 years 3.3%. Meanwhile, based on gender, the prevalence of gout diagnosed with health workers was higher in women at 13.4% compared to men 10.3%. Overweight and obesity can trigger an increase in uric acid levels, so it is one of a risk factor for hyperuricemia. Various high protein and purine foods have long been considered a risk factor for gout. Similarly, the possibility that consumption of dairy products especially cow's milk has a role in protecting the risk of gout based on the results of metabolic studies. Objective: To determined the relationship of sex, body mass index (BMI), dairy products consumption and uric acid levels of the elderly in Cipondoh Sub-District Tangerang. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. Research participants were collected by using purposive sampling. Primary data consisted of respondent characteristics, dairy products consumption, BMI, and uric acid levels. Results: The results of this research have shown there was a correlation between BMI and uric acid level p = 0.007, dairy products consumption and uric acid level p = 0.0001, but there was no correlation between sex and uric acid level p = 0.204 in the elderly at Cipondoh Sub-District Tangerang. Conclusion: There was a correlation between BMI, dairy products consumption with uric acid levels of the elderly in Cipondoh Sub-District Tangerang.
