Abstract Background Globally, chronic low back pain (CLBP) is the leading cause of disability associated with economic costs. However, it has received little attention in low-and-middle-income countries. This study estimated the prevalence and risk factors of CLBP among adults presenting at selected hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted among adults aged ≥18 years who attended the selected hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal during the study period. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic, work-related factors, and information about CLBP. The SPSS version 24.0 (IBM SPSS Inc) was used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics were used for demographic characteristics of participants. CLBP risk factors were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. A p-value of ≤0.05 was deemed statistically significant. Results A total of 678 adults participated in this study. The overall prevalence of CLBP was 18.1% (95% CI: 15.3 – 21.3) with females having a higher prevalence than males, 19.8% (95% CI: 16.0 – 24.1) and 15.85% (95% CI: 11.8 – 20.6), respectively. Using multivariate regression analysis, the following risk factors were identified: overweight (aOR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.1 – 12.3, p = 0.032), no formal education (aOR: 6.1, 95% CI: 2.1 – 18.1, p = 0.001), lack of regular physical exercises (aOR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.0 – 4.8, p = 0.044), smoking 1 to 10 (aOR: 4.5, 95% CI: 2.0 – 10.2, p < 0.001) and more than 11 cigarettes per day (aOR: 25.3, 95% CI: 10.4 – 61.2, p < 0.001), occasional and frequent consumption of alcohol, aOR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.1 – 5.9, p < 0.001 and aOR: 11.3, 95% CI: 4.9 – 25.8, p < 0.001, respectively, a sedentary lifestyle (aOR: 31.8, 95% CI: 11.2 – 90.2, p < 0.001), manual work (aOR: 26.2, 95% CI: 10.1 – 68.4, p < 0.001) and a stooped sitting posture (aOR: 6.0, 95% CI: 2.0 – 17.6, p = 0.001). Conclusion This study concluded that the prevalence of CLBP in KwaZulu-Natal is higher than in other regions, and that it is predicted by a lack of formal education, overweight, lack of regular physical exercises, smoking, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, manual work, and a stooped posture.

ObjectivesLow back pain (LBP) is a common cause of disability among nursing personnel. Although many studies regarding the risk factors for LBP among nursing staff have focused on the physical load at work, multidimensional assessments of risk factors are essential to identify appropriate preventive strategies. We aimed to investigate the association of multidimensional factors (individual, physical, psychological and occupational) with disabling LBP among nursing personnel in Japan.DesignObservational study with comparative cross-sectional design.SettingData were collected using the self-administered questionnaire at a tertiary medical centre.ParticipantsAfter excluding participants with missing variables, 718 nursing personnel were included in the analysis.Outcome measuresA self-administered questionnaire assessed individual characteristics, rotating night shift data, severity of LBP, previous episode of LBP, sleep problem, kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia), depressive condition (K6), physical flexibility and frequency of lifting at work. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the factors associated with disabling LBP (LBP interfering with work) among nursing personnel.ResultsOf all participants, 110 (15.3%) reported having disabling LBP. The multivariable logistic regression analysis after adjustment for several confounding factors showed that kinesiophobia (highest tertile, adjusted OR (aOR): 6.13, 95% CI : 3.34 to 11.27), previous episode of LBP (aOR: 4.31, 95% CI: 1.50 to 12.41) and insomnia (aOR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.05 to 2.62) were significantly associated with disabling LBP.ConclusionsThe present study indicated that kinesiophobia, a previous episode of LBP, and sleep problems were associated with disabling LBP among nursing personnel. In the future, workplace interventions considering assessments of these factors may reduce the incidence of disabling LBP in nursing staff, although further prospective studies are needed.

Globally, Low Back Pain (LBP) comprises a significant occupational hazard in nursing profession. Objectives: To estimate the incidence, to identify risk factors, and impact of illness of LBP among nurses in AL-MakNimer university Hospital at Shendi city. A cross-sectional study was applied including nurses in AL-MakNimer university Hospital at Shendi city, republic of Sudan throughout the period May -June, 2015. Sample was chosen by using total coverage sample. A predesigned questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire included demographic data, work-related factors as well as effect and management of LBP data obtained were analyzed using manually and by used SPSS soft program. Results: The results revealed that the overall incidence of low back pain among nurses was (n=70, 87.5%) Female participants complaining of LBP were significantly more than male participants (85%) of the total female reported LBP. There were significantly relate between age and working hours (.015) it can be seen that about (40%) of the participants experienced LBP at least once a week or more frequently. 52.9% subjects rated their pain as moderate pain. 35.7% nurses' concept regarding factors contributing to their LBP were lifting as well as 28.6% working load,(52.9%) sleep disturbance, (64.3%) restrict activities were nurse comment regarding LBP effect. LBP is a common health problem among working nurse, lifting, work load, were the most perceived work-related risk factors for LBP, restrict activities, taking many days off, might be the most predisposed effect related to LBP. Recommendation: These findings suggest that hospitals should focus and attempt to improve the ergonomics of nursing activities. In addition, effective methods of implementing changes in work systems are needed.

Background: Sedentariness is a substantial risk for many chronic diseases. We aimed to investigate the correlation of sedentary behavior and its indicators with low back pain (LBP) among adults and children. Methods: Original articles published up to April 28, 2020, using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus were evaluated. Odds ratio (OR, 95% CI) was considered the overall effect size for desired associations. Results: We reviewed 49 English articles with analytical observational study design, of which, 27 studies with cross sectional/survey design were retained in the meta-analysis. Among adults, sedentary lifestyle was a considerable risk factor for LBP (OR=1.24, 1.02-1.5); prolonged sitting time (OR=1.42, 1.09-1.85) and driving time (OR=2.03, 1.22-3.36) were the significant risk factors. Sedentary behavior was associated with LBP in office workers (OR=1.23). Moreover, excess weight (OR=1.35, 1.14-1.59) and smoking (OR=1.28, 1.03-1.60) were associated with LBP. Among children, sedentary lifestyle was a remarkable risk factor for LBP (OR=1.41, 1.24- 1.60); prolonged TV watching (OR=1.23, 1.08-1.41) and computer/mobile using and console playing time (OR=1.63, 1.36-1.95) were significant risk factors for LBP. Consumption of coffee, however, has yield conflicting results to be considered as a risk factor. Moreover, the researches on the correlation between sedentariness and high-intensity LBP are scarce and inconclusive. Conclusion: Sedentary behavior, whether in work or leisure time, associates with a moderate increase in the risk of LBP in adults, children and adolescents.

Abstract : Risk factors, Low Back Pain, Prosthetics and Orthotics Students of Health Polytechnic of Surakarta. Low Back Pain (LBP) or lower back pain is a common health problem that found in many people, not only in older people but also in younger nowadays. Low Back Pain associated with many kind of conditions and also risk factors. The etiology of LBP is widely accepted to be multi-factorial. The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors causing LBP on Prosthetics and Orthotics students of Health Polytechnic of Surakarta. The study is cross sectional design used a questionnaire instrument to all Prosthetics and Orthotics students. Data analysis was performed by Chi square. The results showed that the prevalence of LBP after being Prosthetics and Orthotics students of Health Polytechnic of Surakarta is 32,2%. Risk factors associated with Low Back Pain were exercise (p value 0,033), daily time spend standing (p value 0,046), lifting (p value 0,027) and perceived stress (p value 0,008). Gender, body mass index and daily time spend sitting were not associate with Low Back Pain.

Background: The study aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of LBP among the nurses at Sardjito Hospital. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta. LBP was measured in nurses who had work for one year using the Keele Start Back Screening Tool (KSBT) and Orebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire (OMPQ). A simple and multiple logistic regression was used for analysis. Results: Of 800 valid subjects, 324 (40.5%) have the history of LBP complaint, 88.9% were suffering the pain during the data collection. The most significant variables are the history of previous spinal complaints (p = 0.00), slide board use for lateral transfer (p=0.010), gender (p=0.026) and current work place (p=0.019). Nine of the 288 patients of LBP have high risk in line with the KSBT stratification, while 22 of 288 patients have High Estimated Risk of Future Work Disability that agrees with the stratification of performance prognosis using OMPQ. Conclusion: The prevalence of LBP among the nurses at Sardjito Hospital reaches 40.5%, with 88.9% of whom still suffer from pain during the data collection. The risk factors of LBP among the nurses are previous spinal complaint, tools for lateral transfer, work place and gender. Background. Low back pain (LBP) is well known as the most common musculoskeletal disorder with the lifetime prevalence of eighty percent. Worldwide, 37% of low back pain was attributable to occupational risk factors. Truck driving is one among the jobs causing occupational LBP. Even though these drivers in Ethiopia run the high risk of occupational injuries and illnesses like drivers elsewhere, the evidence that shows the magnitude and factors that contribute to LBP is a significant shortcoming. Objective. To assess the magnitude and contributing factors of low back pain among long-distance truck drivers at Modjo Dry Port, Ethiopia, 2018. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among systematically selected 422 long-distance truck drivers at Modjo Dry Port, Ethiopia, from February to March 2018. Data were collected through face-to-face individual interview using a structured questionnaire adapted from the standardized Nordic questionnaire for the analysis of musculoskeletal symptoms. The data were entered using EPI-DATA version 4.2.0.0 and cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 20 statistical software for windows. Binary logistic regression was computed to determine the association using crude and adjusted odds ratios at 95% confidence intervals. Independent variables with a P value less than 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression model were considered as significant. Results. Of 400 truck drivers interviewed, the prevalence of LBP was found to be 65%. The study also found smoking cigarette (AOR = 2.24, 95% CI (1.25–4.01), and P=0.007), physical inactivity (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI (1.28–3.51), and P=0.003), chronic diseases other than LBP (AOR = 2.18, 95% CI (1.32–3.61), and P=0.002), frequent lifting or carrying heavy objects (AOR = 3.02, 95% CI (1.75–5.22), and P≤0.001), perceived improper sitting posture while driving (AOR = 2.20, 95% CI (1.35–3.60), and P=0.002), and perceived job stress (AOR = 2.07, 95% CI (1.20–3.57), and P=0.009) were contributing factors of low back pain. Conclusion. This finding shows the public health importance of low back pain among long-distance truck drivers in Ethiopia. Individual factors largely accounted for the development of low back pain; hence, orientation on these modifiable risk factors and regular follow-up on safety procedures should be considered to mitigate the problem.

Low back pain (LBP) is common and affects most people at some point in their life. The exact cause of LBP among professional car drivers is still uncertain. Epidemiological studies of LBP have been performed among general populations and professional drivers in different countries; however the data on LBP in this professional category is scarce in Bangladesh. This paper investigates the prevalence of LBP among professional car drivers in Dhaka city and examines the relationship between back pain and years of driving, driving duration per day and the body weight of the drivers. A cross-sectional study was performed during December 2010 using a questionnaire and car drivers who experienced back pain for at least one day during the past 12 months were included in the study. The study demonstrated that 78% of car drivers reported LBP for at least one day during the past 12 months. The study also revealed age, daily and cumulative driving in drivers and stature are among the risk factors of LBP.
