Abstract Background The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased during recent years in Iran and other developing countries. Clinical studies suggest that essential folate dietary intake and moderate deficiency of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) may protect and reduce the risk of CRC. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of C677T polymorphism within the MTHFR gene and its correlation with the serum folate and Vit B12 in the Iranian population suffering from CRC. Methods Blood samples were taken from 1017 Iranian individuals (517 cases and 500 controls) who were referred for colonoscopy. TaqMan probe assay was performed for C677T MTHFR polymorphism. Sera were fractionated from the blood samples of 43 patients and controls and folate and Vit B12 concentrations were measured by a monobind kit. The correlation of MTHFR polymorphisms and folate/vitamin-B12 with CRC risk was analyzed. Results In the current study, we found the frequency of three different genotypes of MTHFR polymorphism in the Iranian population i.e., CC, CT, and TT, to be 51.31, 26.73, 21.96 and 61, 32.2, 6.8 in case and control groups, respectively. The homozygote genotype of MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of CRC by 3.68, 1.42, and 3.74-fold in codominant, dominant, and recessive models respectively (p value < 0.01). Our study revealed that there was no significant difference between the amount of folate and Vit B12 in the case and control groups (p value > 0.05). Conclusions This study revealed that there was no significant difference between the amount of folate and Vit B12 in the case and control groups. Furthermore, our results demonstrated a higher risk association for 677TT and 677TT + C677T genotypes of MTHFR compared with 677CC carriers among CRC patients.

Abstract Background: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased vigorously during the last decades in Iran and clinical studies suggest that moderate deficiency of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and essential folate dietary intake may reduce the risk of CRC.The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of C677T polymorphism within MTHFR gene and its correlation with the serum folate and Vit B12 in Iranian population suffering from CRC.Methods: Blood samples were taken from 207 Iranian individuals (103 males and 104 females) who were referred for colonoscopy. TaqMan probe assay was performed for C677T MTHFR polymorphism. Besides, sera were fractionated from the blood samples of 43 patients and controls and folate and Vit B12 concentrations were measured by a monobind kit. Finally, the correlation of MTHFR polymorphisms and folate/vitamin-B12 with CRC risk were analyzed. Results: In the current study, the most percentage of the MTHFR polymorphisms in healthy individuals belongs to CC genotype (wild type). In patients with adenoma the percentage of CC and CT genotype were approximately similar, but surprisingly in adenocarcinoma the percentage of CC genotype (wild type) was the highest (approximately 50%), and the percentage of CT and TT genotypes were slightly similar. Our study revealed that there was no significant difference between the amount of folate and Vit B12 in case and control groups (p value >0.05).Conclusions: We concluded that there is an association between pivotal concentration of serum folate/vitamin B12 and CRC, and this association is altered by MTHFR C677T genotype.

This study determined the effect of Mango mistletoe Methanolic Extract (MMME) on the cardiac's histopathological profile of hypertensive rats (DOCA-Salt) treated. The MMME was treated on fifty rats for 14 days, divided into five treatments: negative control, positive control, doses 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW with five replications. One-way ANOVA analysis was used, namely JAMOVI with version 1.1.9.0, and for cell calculation, diameter using the IMAGE J application. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the histopathological profile of the cardiac in hypertensive rats (DOCA-Salt) treated with MMME for 14 days on the diameter of the heart muscle cells between the control (+) and control groups (-), treatments 1, 2, and 3. This is evidenced by the analysis of p-value> 0.05, namely 0.187 millimeters. Therefore, we concluded that MMME does not affect the diameter of heart/cardiac organ muscle cells. However, there was a significant difference in the amount of necrosis in the cardiac of hypertensive rats between control (+) and control (-) groups, treatments 1, 2, and 3. Based on the results, MMME reduces the number of necrosis in the heart/cardiac organ.

Abstract Purpose Peripheral neuropathy is a complication of taxane that in severe cases can limit the optimal treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of memantine in prevention of docetaxel induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with breast cancer. Methods In this randomized clinical trial, 40 women between the ages of 18 and 64 years with non-metastatic breast cancer (stages I to III) were included (registry number: IRCT20160310026998N9 and registry date: 26 March 2019). All patients were treated with the AC-T regimen (with docetaxel). Patients in intervention group received memantine at a dose of 20 mg for 8 weeks at the beginning of the first cycle of docetaxel. Patients in control group did not take any medication for neuropathy prevention. To assess the neuropathy, DN4 and CTCAE questionnaires were used at baseline, one months, three months and six months after the intervention. Results The DN4 questionnaire score was remarkably less in memantine group in follow up one (p-value: 0.033) and three (p < 00.1). The CTCAE follow up score did not change during study. The Neuropathy duration and Neuropathy onset, were shown significant difference between the intervention and control groups, p = 0.050 and p = 0.001, respectively. From 40 patients, 8 (40%) in memantine group and 2 (10%) in control group, did not experience any kind of neuropathy. Conclusion Data showed that prophylactic administration of memantine 20 mg/day has been effective in prevention of severity and incidence of docetaxel induced neuropathy in patients with breast cancer.

Objective To explore the relationship between the omentin-1 gene rs2274907 A>T polymorphism and colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Chinese Han population. Methods rs2274907 A>T was assessed by PCR–restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Plasma omentin-1 expression from 358 patients with CRC and 286 healthy controls was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. CRC and control groups were divided into subgroups according to the body mass index (BMI) threshold of 25 kg/m2. Results No significant differences were observed between CRC and control groups in terms of genotype or allele frequencies of rs2274907 A>T. Compared with individuals with BMI <25 kg/m2 and the rs2274907 TT genotype, those with AA+AT genotypes and BMI ≥25 kg/m2 had a 3.027-fold increased risk of CRC. A significant tendency toward a higher stage of colorectal adenocarcinomas and depth of invasion was observed in individuals with the rs2274907 AA genotype compared with other genotypes. Conclusions The omentin-1 gene rs2274907 A>T polymorphism does not seem to play a critical role in the development of CRC in the Chinese Han population, but an interaction between the rs2274907 A allele and BMI may increase the CRC risk. The rs2274907 AA genotype is a potential biomarker for CRC stage progression.

As asthma and atherosclerosis have similar pathophysiological mechanisms and risk factors, asthmatic patients may have an increased risk of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to determine the possibility of a higher risk of atherosclerosis in asthma patients compared with healthy controls by measuring carotid elasticity and distensibility. This was a cross-sectional study on 326 participants including 221 patients (129 [58.37%] females) with persistent asthma, aged 46.47±11.58 years, body mass index (BMI) of 29.74±3.99, and 105 healthy control subjects (60 [57.14%] females) aged 46.08±11.35 years, and BMI of 29.42±3.76. Of the 221 patients with asthma, 75 (33.93%) had mild, 74 (33.48%) had moderate and 72 (32.57%) had severe asthma. The carotid distensibility and elasticity were recorded and compared in both patients and control groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the patients and healthy control groups in terms of age, BMI and gender (p=0.775, p=0.482, and p=0.834, respectively). A statistically significant difference was determined between the patient and control groups in respect of both distensibility and elasticity (10.93±1.64 vs. 11.5±1.31, p=0.002 and 0.21±0.03 vs. 0.22±0.04, p=0.001, respectively). Statistically significant differences were determined between the control group and the asthma subgroups in respect of distensibility and elasticity (p<0.001, for both comparisons). The results showed that the difference was mainly due to the patients with severe asthma. Carotid distensibility and elasticity were decreased in asthmatic patients, and the main reason for this decrease was the patients in the severe asthma group. These results may suggest that the risk of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis is increased in patients with asthma, especially those with severe asthma.

The study determined if integrative learning approach could improve learners’ achievement in Technology and Livelihood Education. The respondents of the study were the Grade 10 learners of Muzon Harmony Hills High School during second quarter of school year 2019-2020. Fifty learners participated in the study who were purposively selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. Achievement test and interview guide questions were used.  The findings revealed a significant difference between the level of achievement of the experimental and control groups based on the pre-test and post-test. The obtained mean scores of the experimental group in the pre-test was 13.92 and 38.16 in the post-test with the total mean gain of 24.24, while the mean scores of the control group in the pre-test is 13.76 and 28.16 in the post-test with the total mean gain of 14.40. There was a mean difference of 0.16 in the pre-test and 10 in the post-test. After the given intervention, the computed t-value of 6.71 was greater than the obtained critical value of 1.67 and the acquired p-value was less than the alpha level of 0.05. This means that prior to the given intervention there was no significant difference between the achievements of both groups. Hence, after the given intervention, the achievement of learners who were exposed to the integrative learning approach was found significantly better than the achievement of learners who exposed to the conventional approach.   Therefore, the hypothesis that there was a significant difference between the achievement of both groups was accepted.

Background: Bladder cancer is the second most common cancer of the genitourinary system and the eighth cause of cancer death. In addition to known risk factors such as smoking and urinary stones, trace elements are also effective in causing bladder cancer and other cancers. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the association between bladder cancer and the carcinogens cadmium and arsenic. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 40 patients with bladder cancer admitted to Shahid Bahonar Hospital and a control group of 40 healthy individuals in Kerman, Iran, in 2018. The serum levels of arsenic and cadmium were measured by atomic absorptiometry. The paired t-test and chi-square tests were employed to assess the difference between cases and controls groups. An unadjusted and 2 multivariable conditional regression models were separately adjusted on sex, family cancer history, residence, occupation, and smoking and were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) to assess the association between arsenic and cadmium levels and bladder cancer. The statistical software SPSS version 26 and R software version 3.6.3 were used to perform the statistical analyses. Results: The mean cadmium level was 2.99 ± 1.45 and 2.59 ± 0.46 in the case and control groups, respectively, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (P = 0.100). The mean arsenic level was 2.12 ± 1.04 and 1.43 ± 0.73 in the case and control groups, respectively, demonstrating a statistically significant difference between the groups (P = 0.001). Unadjusted and adjusted conditional logistic regression models indicated significant association between arsenic levels and bladder cancer (unadjusted: odds ratio (OR) (95% CI): 0.66 (0.46 - 0.94), P-value = 0.022; adjusted: OR (95% CI): 0.64 (0.44 - 0.92), P-value = 0.018). Conclusions: Overall, cadmium and arsenic levels are higher in patients with bladder cancer, with a statistically significant difference for arsenic. However, these elements are not interrelated and are not related to other factors.
