Abstract Background Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive-age women. It is one of the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS). These two syndromes have an inflammatory etiologic foundation along with oxidative stress. The present study aimed to compare the dietary intake of antioxidant micronutrients in PCOS women with and without MetS. Materials and methods Overall, 42 participants eligible for this nested case control study were selected by the convenience sampling method. The case group included 14 PCOS patients with MetS and the control group included 28 PCOS patients without MetS. The dietary intake assessment of selenium, chromium, zinc, carotenoids, vitamin D and vitamin E was carried out by a 147-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). PCOS and MetS were diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria and NCEP ATP III, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS16 software, T-test and Mann Whitney. Significant P-value was considered 0.05. Results Dietary intake of antioxidant micronutrients (selenium, zinc, chromium, carotenoids and vitamin E) was significantly lower in the PCOS women with MetS than in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Since the PCOS patients without MetS had more intake of the aforementioned micronutrients than those with MetS, it is assumed that the dietary intake of these nutrients could probably have a protective effect on MetS.

Abstract Background In March 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration decided that the dangers related to neuropsychiatric events (NPEs) of montelukast, one of the leukotriene modifying agents (LTMAs), should be communicated through ‘boxed warning’. In case of NPEs, the prevalence has been the highest in elderly people. Because the characteristics of the elderly such as old age itself can act as risk factors. Therefore, an investigation on safety of LTMAs related to NPEs in elderly using LTMAs is needed. Method A nested case-control study using an elderly sample cohort from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database was used. The asthma cohort included asthma patients newly diagnosed between 2003 and 2013. Within the asthma cohort, the case group was defined as patients who were diagnosed with NPEs. Among patients who had never been diagnosed with NPEs, the control group was selected by matching 1:1 by propensity score. Patients who were prescribed LTMAs for 1 year prior to index date were defined as the exposure group. The logistic regression model was used to measure the effect of LTMAs on NPEs. Results We identified 141,165 patients with newly diagnosed asthma, and selected 31,992 patients per each case and control group. Exposure to LTMAs significantly increased the risk of overall NPEs about in comparison with the absence of exposure (crude odds ratio [OR] 1.58, 95% CI 1.50–1.68). After adjusting for confounding factors, the overall NPEs risk increased (adjusted OR, 1.67, 95% CI 1.58–1.78). Conclusion This study suggests that elderly asthma patients prescribed LTMAs had a higher risk of NPEs than patients who were not treated with LTMAs. Therefore, clinicians should be aware of the potential risks of LTMAs.

SynopsisIn a cohort of middle-aged and elderly Australians, we found that long-term statin use was associated with a higher risk of glaucoma onset. As to subtypes of statins, the increased risk was only found in rosuvastatin users.PurposeTo investigate the relationship between statin use and glaucoma onset in a 10-year longitudinal study.MethodsThis nested case–control study was based on data from a large-scale cohort of Australians aged over 45 years old. Medication exposure was identified by claims records from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme during the follow-up period (2009–2016). The onset of glaucoma was defined as the people with at least three claims of antiglaucoma medications. Controls matched by age, gender and cardiovascular diseases were selected from participants without prescription of antiglaucoma medications. A conditional logistic regression model was used to assess the association between statin use and glaucoma onset.ResultsThe proportion of statin users was higher in the case group (40.5%) than that in the control group (38.4%). After adjusting for baseline characteristics and longitudinal claims records, statin use was not associated with glaucoma onset (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.11). However, an increased risk of glaucoma onset was observed in participants with a longer duration of statin use (>3 years vs <1 year: OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.21). With respect to specific types of statins, participants taking rosuvastatin were more likely to suffer from glaucoma (OR 1.11, 95%CI 1.01 to 1.22). The use of other statins was not significantly associated with glaucoma onset.ConclusionsLong-term statin use was found to be associated with a higher risk of glaucoma onset in this study. Regarding specific types of statins, the increased risk of glaucoma onset was only observed in users of rosuvastatin.

Background: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common causes of infertility in women. Objective: The current study investigated mental and personality disorders in infertile women with and without PCOS. Methods: This case-control study evaluated 400 infertile women who referred to the Infertility Center in Babol city (North of Iran). Participants were categorized into the case group (201 PCOS) and the control group (199 without PCOS). All of the participants completed the Millon Clinical Multi-axial Inventory-III (MCMI-III). Results: The mean scores for clinical personality patterns were significantly higher for six personality disorders (schiz- oid, avoidant, antisocial, depressive, sadistic, and negativistic) and for three classes of severe personality disorder patterns (schizotypal, borderline, and paranoid) in infertile women with PCOS than in women without PCOS. The mean scores for eight clinical disorders (somatoform, manic disorder, dysthymia, alcohol-dependence, drug-dependence, post-trauma stress disorder, major depression, and delusion disorder) were also higher in infertile women with PCOS than in women without PCOS. Conclusion: The scores of many mental and personality disorders are higher in infertile women with PCOS than in women without PCOS. Thus, clinicians should prioritize recognizing and treating psychological problems of infertile women with PCOS. Keywords: Polycystic ovarian syndrome; infertility; personality disorders.

BackgroundThis case–control study was conducted to investigate the relationship between serum nesfatin-1 levels and nutritional status and blood parameters in patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.MethodsThirty patients (case) diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were included. Thirty healthy subjects (control) matched with patients with metabolic syndrome in terms of age, gender and body mass index were included. Three-day food consumption records were obtained. Anthropometric indices were measured and body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance method. Biochemical parameters and serum nesfatin-1 levels were measured after 8 hours of fasting.ResultsSerum nesfatin-1 levels were 0.245±0.272 ng/mL in the case group and 0.528±0.987 ng/mL in the control group (p>0.05). There was a positive significant correlation between serum nesfatin-1 levels and body weight, waist and hip circumferences in the case group (p<0.05). Each unit increase in hip circumference measurement affects the levels of nesfatin by 0.014 times. In the control group, there was a positive significant correlation between body weight and serum nesfatin-1 levels (p<0.05). A significant correlation was detected between HbA1c and serum nesfatin-1 levels in the case group (p<0.05). A significant relationship was detected between dietary fibre intake and the serum nesfatin-1 levels in the case group (p<0.05).ConclusionsAnthropometric indices and blood parameters were correlated with serum nesfatin-1 levels in patients with metabolic syndrome. More clinical trials may be performed to establish the relationship between serum nesfatin-1 levels and nutritional status.

Mortality towards pregnant and maternity women still turns out to be a great problem in Indonesia. According to Indonesia’s Demographic and Health survey in 2012, Indonesia as the country with the highest mortality rate in Southeast Asia. Maternal mortality has short-term and long-term consequences, and those consequences are more significant than mother’s non-maternal mortality of women with reproductive age. Maternal mortality causes the shifting of parenting towards toddlers who are left behind. This can increase the risks of developmental disorders towards toddlers due the lack of focus of the caregivers on the toddlers, consequently the stimulation will be reduced as well. This research aims to analyze whether maternal mortality increases the risks of developmental disorders towards toddlers. The method was using comparative study with retrospective cohort study approach. The research subjects were 41 toddlers who experienced maternal mortality in Probolinggo Regency (case group), and 41 toddlers who did not experience maternal mortality (control group). On the samples, the assessment of the suitability of development stages based on age appropriate KPSP forms. The statistical examination indicates that there is a difference of developmental disorder between case group and control group with p = 0,023 (<0,05), and RR = 2,5. Research conclution indicates that maternal mortality increases the risks of developmental disorder towards toddlers by 2,5 times.

Abstract Purpose. Beans intake has been associated with reduced risk of breast cancer (BRCA), however; only few studies considered molecular subtypes status and none in African women. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the associations between dietary intake of beans and BRCA including its subtypes in Nigerian women.Methods. Overall, 472 newly diagnosed patients with primary invasive BRCA were age-matched (±5 years) with 472 controls from the Nigerian Integrative Epidemiology of Breast Cancer (NIBBLE) Study from 01/2014-07/2016. We collected dietary intake of beans using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Beans intake was categorized into three levels of never (never in the past year), low (≤1 portion/week) and high intake (>1 portions/week). We used conditional and unconditional logistic regression models to estimate the Odds Ratio (OR) of beans intake and the risk of overall BRCA and by its molecular subtypes.Results. The mean (SD) age of cases was 44.4(10.0) and of controls was 43.5(9.5) years. In the case group, more than half (51.1%) has never consumed beans alone in the past year compared to 39.0% in the control group. In multivariable models, we found significant inverse associations between beans intake and overall BRCA risk (OR=0.57; 95%CI: 0.38-0.85), hormone receptor-positive BRCA (OR=0.45, 95%CI: 0.23-0.90) and triple-negative BRCA (OR=0.47 95%CI: 0.25-0.88). Conclusion. Dietary intake of beans of more than one portions a week is associated with reduced risk of BRCA in African women and it may play a significant role in reducing the incidence of BRCA particularly of the more aggressive triple-negative subtype, which is more prevalent in SSA.

ABSTRACT Introduction Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder affecting all age groups and presenting with myriad problems like menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, anovulatory infertility, and long-term complications like diabetes, cardiovascular problems, etc. Aim Study was aimed at finding the prevalence, characteristics, and various risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MS) in reproductive age group in our hospital. Materials and methods Using statistical table, a sample size of 131 was calculated and patients were recruited as per inclusion criteria. Polycystic ovarian syndrome was diagnosed by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)/European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) criteria. After informed consent, a detailed history was obtained and physical examination was carried out to assess, body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist—hip ratio (WHR), and blood pressure (BP). Fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were measured for each woman Results Prevalence of MS in our study was 45.8%; 26.7% of patients had a combination of increased waist circumference, raised triglycerides, and low HDL; 55.2% of patients had a fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels more than 100 mg%. Age of the patient was a statistically significant risk factor of MS with 100% of patients in the age group of 35 to 39 presenting with MC. Body mass index was also a statistically significant risk factor with 82.6% with BMI > 30 having MC. Other important risk factors include a WHR more than 0.95, presence of diabetes in mother or sister, and presence of acanthosis; 71% of patients with WHR more than 0.95 had MC. Age of menarche, duration of menstrual cycles, and hirsutism showed no significant relationship. Conclusion An outstanding fact that emerged in this study was that 94% of women with PCOS had HDL values <50 mg/dL. And 58% had triglycerides more than 150 mg/dL. Abstract Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common inflammatory disorder of the pancreas. Recent evidence has shown that metabolic syndrome is positively correlated with the severity of AP. However, only a few studies have revealed the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the occurrence of AP. We therefore elucidated the association between metabolic syndrome and the occurrence of AP. Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted. A total of 705 patients admitted to our hospital from January 2016 to December 2018 were included in the study. Subjects were divided into case and control groups according to their diagnosis: (1) According to the revised Atlanta classification from 2012, patients diagnosed with AP were enrolled in the case group. (2) Patients without a history of AP or any disease related to metabolic syndrome were allocated into the control group. Controls were matched to cases individually by sex and age (control/case ratio=1). Results: The incidence rate of metabolic syndrome in AP patients was 30.9%, which was more frequent than that in controls (13.2%) (OR=2.837; 95% CI 1.873-4.298, p<0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, a history of smoking or alcohol consumption and biliary stones were significantly associated with AP (OR=2.441; 95% CI 1.865-5.172, p<0.001; OR=1.777; 95% CI 1.060-2.977, p=0.029; OR=28.995; 95% CI 13.253-63.435, p<0.001). In addition, the occurrence of AP was significantly associated with total cholesterol (TC) (OR=1.992; 95% CI 1.246-3.183, p=0.004), triglyceride (TG) (OR=2.134; 95% CI 1.403-3.245, p<0.001), hyperglycaemia (OR=2.261; 95% CI 1.367-3.742, p=0.001), and apolipoprotein A (Apo A) (OR=0.270; 95% CI 0.163-0.447, p<0.001). Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome and its components were associated with AP occurrence.

Abstract Background One of the common disorders that affect females of reproductive age is the Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Thyroid dysfunction is also more prevalent in this age group. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in women with PCOS in comparison with control and to investigate the association between hypothyroidism and PCOS in women of ovulatory age. Patients and Methods: Eighty female subjects of fertility age were selected and divided into two equal groups. The first 40 subjects are healthy females as a control group. The second 40 group are patients with PCOS. The PCOS women were diagnosed by Rotterdam criteria and performed thyroid tests, sex hormones and lipid profile tests. Results The results show that PCOS women with hypothyroidism are tending have a high body mass index (BMI). Forty-five percent of PCOS patients had hypothyroidism which was investigated in TSH and T4 tests by 35% and 10%, respectively. A high level of testosterone was found in females with PCOS. The cholesterol shows a significant correlation with the alteration in Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). Conclusion There is a correlation between thyroid dysfunction especially hypothyroidism with the polycystic ovarian syndrome because both of them lead in features to metabolic syndrome and there is a high prevalence of hypothyroidism in women with PCOS
