An Integrated Review of Indirect, Relational, and Social Aggression

Over the last decade, researchers have found that girls may be just as aggressive as boys when manipulative forms of aggression, such as gossiping and spreading rumors, are included. These forms of aggression are known by 3 different names: indirect aggression, relational aggression, and social aggression. This review examines their commonalities and differences, and concludes that they are essentially the same form of aggression. We show that analogous forms are not found in other species. We offer a functional account: indirect aggression is an alternative strategy to direct aggression, enacted when the costs of direct aggression are high, and whose aim is to socially exclude, or harm the social status of, a victim. In this light, we consider sex differences and developmental trends and the impact of this aggression on victims. We conclude that indirect, relational, and social aggression are much more similar than they are different, and we suggest ways in which future research can be facilitated by integrating the three areas under an adaptive framework.

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a global threat and crisis situation, and its wide-reaching impact has also affected marital satisfaction. Dysfunction of the marital system puts the survival of the family unit at risk. This research aimed to determine the level of marital satisfaction of Portuguese families during the social lockdown and the association between the variables under study. A descriptive, exploratory study was conducted. During the social lockdown, 276 people of Portuguese nationality and residing in Portugal were recruited using nonprobabilistic convenience sampling. Marital satisfaction in the pandemic phase showed low values that may be associated with the social, economic, and political context experienced by the pandemic situation. Future research must be carried out in order to identify, prevent, and intervene in situations of violence. In addition, future research should explore not only marital satisfaction during the current pandemic but a more systemic assessment of marital relations during crises, expanding the impact of marital satisfaction in family functioning.

This study evaluated the impact of generalization of the Social Competence Intervention-Adolescent (SCI-A) curriculum in a school setting for individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome (). This study examined to what degree the generalization of the SCI-A curriculum could be measured when delivered in a school setting. Across the six participants preliminary results suggest improvement on teacher reports of social skills and executive functioning. Some improvements were also evident in direct measures of facial-expression recognition. Data collected in the nonintervention settings indicated that some generalization of social interaction skills may have occurred for all six participants. Future research directions are discussed.

The on-going rise in demand experienced by voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) providing emergency food aid has been described as a sign of a social and public health crisis in the UK (Loopstra, 2018; Lambie-Mumford, 2019), compounded since 2020 by the impact of (and responses to) Covid 19 (Power et al., 2020). In this article we adopted a social practice approach to understanding the work of food bank volunteering. We identify how ‘helping others’, ‘deploying coping strategies’ and ‘creating atmospheres’ are key specific (and connected) forms of shared social practice. Further, these practices are sometimes suffused by faith-based practice. The analysis offers insights into how such spaces of care and encounter (Williams et al., 2016; Cloke et al., 2017) function, considers the implications for these distinctive organisational forms (the growth of which has been subject to justified critique) and suggests avenues for future research.

Developmentally based theories in the social-psychology field emphasize the important role that significant adults play in relation to children’s psychosocial health and well-being. In particular, these theories suggest that the responses adults provide to children in reaction to their performance attempts may affect the children’s own perceptions and evaluations of their competencies, as well as their overall self-worth. In the youth sport setting, coaches may be the main providers of performance-related feedback. The purpose of this paper was to use current research and theory to identify and discuss 4 dimensions of coaches’ feedback that are relevant to the growth and development of young athletes: content, delivery, degree of growth orientation, and extent of stereotyping. The paper ends with recommendations for future research on the topic, with emphasis on examining developmental transitions and why coaches give feedback in particular ways.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on research designed to assess the impact of sponsorship financing of social marketing initiatives on the evaluation of those social marketing programs. Design/methodology/approach – The research utilizes an in-depth, multi-method case study of the Canadian Mental Health Association Calgary Region (CMHA-CR) who carried out a social marketing campaign concerning mental health behaviors that was largely financed by sponsors. Findings – The sponsorship of the CMHA-CR social marketing program was complex with a total of 15 stakeholders involved as sponsors, partners and grantors. The research reveals that while there is considerable sharing of objectives among the stakeholders in this sponsorship, not all objectives are shared between sponsors and sponsees, and not all objectives are shared between the public and private sector sponsors of the program. Practical implications – The research showed that because sponsors and sponsees share in many of the objectives of the social marketing campaign, the evaluation of the social marketing campaign, particularly its ability to achieve the social marketing-specific objectives, is of interest to all the stakeholder parties, and effective social marketing evaluation must also incorporate evaluation of the non-shared objectives of all sponsorship stakeholders. Originality/value – Increasing social needs, accompanied by reduced government funding and increased competition amongst not-for-profit (NFP) organizations for that funding, are driving NFPs to seek innovative approaches to financing their social programs. The research reports initial findings critical in this environment, as well as raises issues and questions related to future research.

The content and structure of delusions were compared in 30 women and 30 age-matched men with Shizophrenic Disorder. Men showed an excess of homosexual persecutory delusions and of grandiose delusions involving social status and personal power. Women showed an excess of delusions of fertility and of jealousy, and were more often than men objects rather than subjects in their grandiose delusions. There was an excess of women who reported co-objects of persecution, and who personally knew their persecutors, nearly always men. These differences mirrored aspects of the social environment, especially with regard to sex-role stereotyping.

Inconsistent associations between health and measures of subjective social status compared to one’s community suggest that how people define community may matter. This study broke down community into status among neighborhood and friends/family to assess the impact of each domain on chronic stress in individuals differing in socioeconomic status (18 employed and 18 unemployed individuals). The findings suggest that for ratings of subjective social status, the social and physical proximity of the reference group matters. Specifically, neighborhood status was affected by unemployment, while friends/family status was associated with perceived stress, emphasizing the importance of the comparison group in assessing subjective status.

The amount of social media user in Indonesia is highly increasing, both for adult and children such as the elementary school student. The social media have its own policy about the age restriction to legally access the social media and elementary student is not one of them. Nevertheless, the datas show that elementary school student is one of the active user in social media. Cyberbullying and cyberporn are the impact of those unideal condition. This problem brings another concern to the parents of elementary school student user. The aim of this research is to describe the parents’s surveillance role towards the under age user. This research used the phenomenoogy method. While the results show that the parents’s surveillance role is only in the preventive stage without further analysis into the social media itself. The parents become supervisor in several conditions: the social media using restriction, being friend to their children in the social media, limiting the internet data, approaching personally and using the religious approachment. The result of this research can be the reference for the parents in educating their children in using the social media. For the future research, strongly recommended to search for the relationship of the parent’s supervising role and the school in minimalizing the bad impact of the internet and social media for the children.Keywords: Media Literation, Social Media, Children, Parents ABSTRAKJumlah pengguna media sosial di Indonesia terus meningkat, tidak hanya dari kalangan dewasa namun juga anak-anak SD. Media sosial memiliki kebijakan terkait batasan umur yang dilegalkan sebagai pengguna dan anak SD tidak termasuk bagian di dalamnya. Namun data justru menunjukan bahwa anak SD kini menjadi pengguna aktif media sosial dan hal ini berimbas pada munculnya cyberbulling hingga postingan anak SD yang memuat unsur cyberporn. Persoalan ini membawa keprihatinan tersendiri bagi orang tua yang memiliki anak SD selaku pengguna internet dan pemilik akun media sosial. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan peran pengawasan yang dilakukan orangtua terhadap anak pengguna media sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode fenomenologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa pengawasan orangtua masih di tataran preventif tanpa mengkaji lebih mendalam mengenai isi media sosial itu sendiri. Orangtua memposisikan diri sebagai pengawas anak dengan beberapa cara, yaitu: penerapan aturan penggunaan yang ketat, berteman dengan anaknya di media sosial, pembatasan kuota, pendekatan personal dan menggunakan unsur KeTuhanan. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi bahan kajian bagi orangtua dalam mengedukasi anak saat menggunakan internet dan media sosial. Bagi penelitian selanjutnya diharapkan dapat meneliti hubungan pengawasan orangtua serta pihak sekolah dalam meminimalisir dampak buruk internet dan media sosial bagi anak-anak.Kata kunci: Literasi Media, Media Sosial, Anak, Orangtua

Le statut social de la femme est un critère de différenciation dans le domaine de la migration internationale féminine. Cependant la littérature reste peu prolixe sur la relation entre celui-ci et la pratique migratoire. Cette étude vise à documenter les liens entre le statut des femmes et leurs comportements migratoires dans le contexte burkinabè. Elle s’appuie sur des données secondaires, 3 880 femmes âgées de 15 ans et plus, issues de l’enquête sur l’Interaction entre Politiques Publiques, Migrations et Développement (IPPMD) au Burkina Faso en 2014 collectées auprès de 2 200 ménages. L’analyse a été à la fois descriptive (bivariée et multivariée) et explicative (régression logistique). Les résultats montrent que le statut social de la femme est négativement associé à l’émigration internationale des femmes. Les émigrées sont celles qui ont un statut faible. Elles résident en milieu rural, dans des ménages ayant une expérience migratoire et un niveau de vie faible. Le statut social de la femme explique le départ vers l’étranger chez les femmes Burkinabè et contribue à l’exacerbation des flux migratoires au Burkina Faso. Le sexe du chef de ménage et la taille du ménage constituent un autre groupe de variables qui influencent directement l’émigration des femmes mais aussi de façon indirecte via le statut de celles-ci. En conclusion, cette étude aurait contribué à une compréhension plus large sur les migrations féminines au Burkina Faso. Au regard de ces résultats, l’amélioration des conditions de vie des femmes et l’analyse de l’impact de l’émigration internationale de cellesci sur certains secteurs de développement local telles que la santé et l’éducation constituent des pistes à explorer afin de contribuer à l’autonomisation des femmes d’une part et de tirer les avantages qu’offre la migration d’autre part.   The social status of women is a criterion of differentiation in the field of international female migration. However, the literature is not very prolific on the relationship between this and the practice of migration. This study aims to document the links between the status of women and their migratory behavior in the Burkina Faso context. The study is based on secondary data, 3,880 women aged 15 and over, from the survey on the Interaction between Public Policies, Migration and Development (IPPMD) in Burkina Faso in 2014 collected from 2,200 households. The analysis was both descriptive (bivariate and multivariate) and explanatory. Results show that the social status of women is negatively associated with the international emigration of women. The emigrants are those who have a weak status. They live in rural areas, in households with migratory experience and a low standard of living. The social status of women explains the departure abroad among Burkinabè women and contributes to the exacerbation of migratory flows in Burkina Faso. The sex of the head of the household and the size of the household constitute another group of variables that directly influence the emigration of women but also indirectly via their status. In conclusion, this study would have contributed to a broader understanding of female migration in Burkina Faso. Based on these results, improving the living conditions of women and analyzing the impact of their international emigration on sectors of local development such as health and education are avenues for consideration to explore in order to contribute to the empowerment of women on the one hand and to reap the benefits of migration on the other.
