Summary of major factors affecting mechanical properties of TiZr based alloys

Effects of major factors, such as alloy composition, crystal structure and grain size, on mechanical properties of TiZr based alloys are investigated and summarized in this work. The microhardness of TC4 alloy obviously increases 15.3% and 17.6% after 30 wt.% and 47 wt.% Zr additions, respectively. Nanoindentation results show that the average nanoindentation hardness of α phase in annealed 30 Zr is approximately 18% higher than that of retained β phase. Tensile test results show that variation in strength of basketweave microstructural 30 Zr alloy with original β grain size from 100 to 203 μm is less than 2%.

The effects of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-38644 alloy were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as uniaxial tensile test. The results show that when the solution temperature is lower than 845°C, the microstructure of Ti-38644 alloy is equiaxed β phase with the grain size of 20μm, and the tensile strength is about 960MPa. As raising solution temperature to 860°C, the grain size of Ti-38644 alloy increases to 100μm and the tensile strength decreased to 870MPa. There are a large number of secondary α phase precipitated from the grain boundaries and within grain of β phase undergoing aging treatment. Secondary α phase coarsens with increasing the aging temperature, leading to the decrease of tensile strength. After solution treatment at 815°C for 1.5h, water quenching plus aging at 520°C for 10h, air cooling, Ti-38644 alloy shows a better mechanical property with the tensile strength 1330MPa, elongation and reduction of area 10% and 45% respectively.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of grain size on mechanical properties of commercially pure grade 2 (CP2) titanium bar with a diameter of 5 mm. The results reveal that the microstructure of β-phase forms when the annealing temperature exceeds 800oC. The formation of β-phase leads to reduce the ductility but increase hardness. The strength coefficient, yielding stress and hardness decrease with increasing of grain size when the microstructure of specimen is the α-phase.

The strength of abrasive wheels is one of the key factors affecting the performance of abrasive machining. The paper discusses ways to improve the strength of abrasive wheels. The stress-state mathematical model presented herein is a generalization of the existing models. It is used herein to find for the first time that there are numerous optimal combinations of the elastic modulus and reinforcing material density, which result in the same minimum value of the objective function. It is found out that increasing the radius of the reinforcing component while also optimizing the mechanical properties of its material may increase the permissible breaking speed of the wheel several times. We herein present a regression equation and a nomogram for finding the optimal combination of control factors. Conventional methods for testing the mechanical properties of materials, which have been proven reliable for testing metals and alloys, are not as reliable for testing abrasive materials, as the test results they generate are not sufficiently stable or accurate. We therefore propose an alternative method that does not require any special equipment or special studies.

A new type of Ti-Al-Sn-Zr-Mo-Si series high temperature titanium alloy was prepared by a water-cooled copper crucible vacuum induction melting method, and its phase transition point was determined by differential thermal analysis to be Tβ = 1017 °C. The influences of solution temperature on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the as-forged high temperature titanium alloy were studied. XRD results illustrated that the phase composition of the alloy after different heat treatments was mainly α phase and β phase. The microstructures showed that with the increase of the solution temperature, the content of the primary α phase gradually reduced, the β transformation structure increased by degrees, then, the number and size of secondary α phase increased obviously. The tensile results at room temperature (RT) illustrated that as the solution temperature increased, the strength of the alloy gradually increased, and the plasticity decreased slightly. The results of tensile test at 650 °C illustrated that the strength of the alloy enhanced with the increase of solution temperature, the plasticity decreased first and then increased, when the solution temperature increased to 1000 °C, the alloy had the best comprehensive mechanical properties, the tensile strength reached 714.01 MPa and the elongation was 8.48 %. Based on the room temperature and high temperature properties of the alloy, the best heat treatment process is finally determined as: 1000 °C/1 h/AC+650 °C/6 h/AC.

The Young’s modulus of Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloy varies with the composition of Cr, Sn and Zr, in which the elements act as β stabilizers. Some Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloys show very low Young’s modulus under 50GPa. The amount of Zr in alloys with very low Young's modulus increases with the decrease of Cr. We investigated the Young’s modulus and deformation behavior of Ti-xCr-Sn-Zr (x=0~1mass%) alloys containing a large amount of Zr. The quenched microstructure of Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloys changes from martensitic structure to β single-phase structure if the amounts of β stabilized elements are increased. The Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloys with compositions close to the transitional composition of microstructure from martensite to β phase show minimum Young’s modulus. The clear microstructural transition disappears and the minimum Young’s modulus increases if the amount of Cr becomes too small. In Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloys containing a large amount of Zr, Young’s modulus depends on β phase that is intermingled with martensite.

The mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys are affected by several microstructural features such as secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), size and shape of eutectic Si-particles, presence of intermetallics as well as by porosity. In the current study, Al-Si-Cu alloy A380 was prepared by a unique directional solidification method to produce samples with two different SDAS of 9 μm and 27 μm. The lower solidification rate resulted in larger SDAS, larger grain size, larger eutectic Si and larger intermetallics including Fe-rich β phase. The microstructure with higher solidification rate was found to be finer and more homogeneous with smaller eutectic Si and intermetallics. The specimen with larger SDAS exhibited stronger texture than the one with smaller SDAS. The specimen with smaller SDAS showed improved mechanical properties including YS, UTS and ductility.

Low modulus β Ti alloys are attractive for biomedical application. This work examines the mechanical properties of Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr system alloys, especially the effect of the varying alloy composition on the microstructure, the Young’s modulus and the deformation mechanism.The Young’s modulus of the alloy varies with the composition, which variation is caused mainly from the competition between the meta-stable β phase and ω phase.The deformation modes of the Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloy, which are the mechanical twinning, the deformation by slip and the deformation-induced transformation, also change depending on the composition of the alloy. The minimum of the Young’s modulusof the Ti-Cr-Sn-Zr alloy in this experiment was shown in the composition where the microstructure of the alloy changes from the martensitic structure to the meta-stable β structure.

Effects of AlN addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy were investigated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile testing. Five different samples were made with different amounts of AlN(0wt%, 0.12wt%, 0.30wt%, 0.48wt%, 0. 60wt%). The results show that the phases of as-cast alloy are composed of α-Mg,β-Mg17Al12. The addition of AlN suppressed the precipitation of the β-phase. And, with the increase of AlN content, the microstructure of β-phase was changed from the reticulum to fine grains. When AlN content was up to 0.48wt% in the alloy, the β-phase became most uniform distribution. After adding 0.3wt% AlN to Al-Mg-Zn alloy, the average alloy grain size reduced from 102μm to 35μm ,the tensile strength of alloy was the highest. The average tensile strength increased from 139MPa to 169.91MPa, the hardness increased from 77.7HB to 98.4HB, but the elongation changes indistinctively. However, when more amount of AlN was added, the average alloy grain size did not reduce sequentially and increased to 50μm by adding 0.6wt% AlN and the β-phase became a little more. Different grain size of starting powder was choosed and different sintering additives were used to fabricate Si3N4 ceramics by pressureless sintering. Samples’ relative density and mechanical properties including Vickers hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness were tested. Then XRD, SEM and EDS were carried out to identify phase and observe microstructure and fracture morphology. The result shows that high purity α phase Si3N4 powder of 5 μm is suitable for sintering and combination of 5 wt.% MgO +5 wt.% Y2O3 is most effective within six kinds of sintering aids.

The effects of heat treatment process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TC4 alloy were investigated. The double shear and tensile tests were carried out by using the 12mm diameter standard specimens after solution treatment at 520°С for 1.5h and water quenching, followed by aging at 480-540°С for 8h. The microstructure and facture surface were analyzed using the equipment of metallurgical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that TC4 alloy show the best comprehensive performances after solution treatment at 940°С for 1.5h, aging at 520°С for 8h; the tensile specimens display a typical ductile fracture with oval dimples of various sizes; the microstructures with clear grain boundary and obvious lamellar structure are observed at room temperature. It indicates that the excellent comprehensive properties can be obtained by controlling the grain size of primary α phase and the morphology structure and amount of the secondary α phase at optimized aging temperature.
