This study investigates the relationship between personality factors, leadership and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB), predict changes in OCB by personality and leadership, and analyze the influence of demographic variables (organizational tenure, educational qualifications, age, designation, gender and job status) on OCB, personality, leadership and their dimensions. The sample consisted of 203 employees from three units of Sesa Goa Ltd., a leading mining company in Goa. Three reliable and valid tools were employed for the assessment-Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, NEO Five Factor Inventory and Leadership Effectiveness scale. Results of correlation analysis indicated positive correlation between leadership (all dimensions) and OCB. Of five personality factors, extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness showed positive correlation while neuroticism was found to be negatively correlated with OCB. Furthermore, result of regression analysis unveiled that 18% variance in OCB is contributed by leadership and 11% by personality. Unit wise differences were also evident in OCB. An incidental analysis using One Way ANOVA and t test revealed significant influence of organizational tenure and educational level on OCB. No significant difference was noticed on leadership and any of its dimensions. This study provides guidelines to aid managers better understand how to enhance OCB.

Background: Physician review websites have influence on a patient’s selection of a provider. Written reviews are subjective and difficult to quantitatively analyze. Sentiment analysis of writing can quantitatively assess surgeon reviews to provide actionable feedback for surgeons to improve practice. The objective of this study is to quantitatively analyze large subset of written reviews of hand surgeons using sentiment analysis and report unbiased trends in words used to describe the reviewed surgeons and biases associated with surgeon demographic factors. Methods: Online written and star-rating reviews of hand surgeons were obtained from healthgrades.com and webmd.com . A sentiment analysis package was used to calculate compound scores of all reviews. Mann-Whitney U tests were performed to determine the relationship between demographic variables and average sentiment score of written reviews. Positive and negative word and word-pair frequency analysis was also performed. Results: A total of 786 hand surgeons’ reviews were analyzed. Analysis showed a significant relationship between the sentiment scores and overall average star-rated reviews ( r2 = 0.604, P ≤ .01). There was no significant difference in review sentiment by provider sex; however, surgeons aged 50 years and younger had more positive reviews than older ( P < .01). The most frequently used bigrams used to describe top-rated surgeons were associated with good bedside manner and efficient pain management, whereas those with the worst reviews are often characterized as rude and unable to relieve pain. Conclusions: This study provides insight into both demographic and behavioral factors contributing to positive reviews and reinforces the importance of pain expectation management.

Binge drinking (BD) is a common practice among college students. Alcohol consumption has been related to depressive symptoms and certain personality factors, although less is known about the relationship of these variables with BD. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of BD with depressive symptoms and personality in university students. We performed a cross-sectional study among students (aged 18–30 years) enrolled in the academic year 2018–2019 at the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Cantabria (Spain). Sociodemographic, academic, and alcohol and other drug use information was collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire. The Beck Depression Inventory-II was used to measure depressive symptomatology and the Neo Five-Factor Inventory was used for personality. A total of 142 participants were included, 88.03% of which were women. Up to 38.03% were classified as BD. Concerning depressive symptoms, 7.41% of BD were at the moderate-severe level compared to 3.41% of non-BD (p = 0.7096). Regarding personality, the median score for extraversion of BD was 35 (Q1 = 29, Q3 = 40), 32 (Q1 = 28, Q3 = 36) in non-BD (p = 0.0062), conscientiousness scored 34 (Q1 = 30.5, Q3 = 38) points in non-BD, 31.50 (Q1 = 27, Q3 = 37) in BD (p = 0.0224). In conclusion, BD students have higher levels of extraversion and lower levels of responsibility than non-BD students. No significant differences were found between the level of depressive symptomatology between BD and non-BD students.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of quality of work life (QWL) on organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) of employees. Also, the paper examines the role of demographic variables, i.e. gender, position and type of organization as moderators of relationship between QWL and OCB. Design/methodology/approach A survey with sample of 375 was used in this study. PROCESS tool by Hayes (2013) was used to analyze the relation between QWL, OCB and demographic variables. Findings QWL was found to positively influence OCB. Gender and type of organization were found to moderate the relationship, whereas position failed to moderate the relation significantly. Practical implications The study reinforced the significance of QWL practices by organizations to improve extra-role behaviours of employees. Also, importance of considering gender and the industry you are in is emphasized in using and designing the QWL programme for employees. Originality/value While many antecedents have been studied in relation to OCB, QWL is rarely discussed. The paper attempts to reemphasize QWL’s importance in doing so in light of demographic variables as moderators.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of both work-related and emic contextualization of personality measurement in the prediction of work-related outcomes. Design/methodology/approach In total, 224 employees completed work-contextualized and non-contextualized Big Five model measures, as well as contextualized emic personality measures, together with a number of measures for work-related outcomes. Findings Results showed that, after controlling for demographic variables and non-contextualized etic factors, etic contextualized factors predicted occupational stress, work engagement, job satisfaction, work frustration, turnover intention, career satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior. After controlling for demographic variables, non-contextualized etic factors and contextualized etic factors, emic contextualized personality factors predicted work engagement, job satisfaction, absenteeism, counterproductive workplace behaviors and organizational citizenship behaviors. Research limitations/implications The study has a number of limitations. First, the sample contained participants recruited from a low number of professional areas. Second, the sample consisted mostly of women, and relying on unbalanced samples may lead to construct irrelevant variance. Practical implications By using a combination of etic personality measures and contextualized emic personality measures, organizations can better predict a number of organizational outcomes related to extra-role performance, such as those considered in the present study. Originality/value This research showed that, in the case of personality assessment, using a double form of contextualization – frame of reference and culture – an increment in the prediction of organizational behaviors can be obtained.

The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the importance behaviors as well as demographics in developing an effective consumer behavior segmentation strategy of Facebook users in Thailand. The questionnaire which comprised a twenty nine items intended user-behaviors scale. The data was collected from 503 potential respondents with valid responses received. There were 173 males respondents (34.4%) and 330 females (65.6%). The majority of the respondents were 21 years old (n=142, 28.2%). Data were initially analysed by factor analysis to develop the type of user-behaviors solution. The results indicated five distinct types of Facebook user-behaviors: Update and share, Shopping and learning, Prefer uncomplicated, Sociable, and Fast distribution. The relationship between behavior types and demographic variables was investigated through ANOVA. The results revealed that gender had no impact for all types. As for age, there was significant difference for “shopping and learning” type. The author interpreted to mean that younger people using Facebook for more shopping and learning than the other age group. These five distinct types were validated by examining their individual behavior type regarding frequency of access to Facebook and network size, there were significant differences for all of the types. The author interpreted that frequency of log in Facebook, and a large number of network size can drive Facebook usage. The empirical findings of this research indicated that 29.8% of Thai teenagers visit Facebook 2-3 times per day and 21.5% visit to Facebook more than 16 times per day. The result also indicated that the majority of the young (54.5%) have more than 181 friends on Facebook.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical model describing how immigrant employees’ organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) are influenced by their immigrant status. Additionally, this study attempts to explore the mediating role of perceived job mobility as well as the moderating role of organizational tenure in the relationship between immigrant status and OCBs. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual analysis was performed. Findings Drawing upon social identity, self-categorization, and impression management theories, this study proposes the following. First, an immigrant employee’s perceived different categorization of employment and organizational status will have a negative impact on his or her challenge-oriented OCB. Second, an immigrant employee’s perceived categorization of employment and organizational status will have a positive impact on his or her affiliation-oriented OCB. Third, perceived job mobility mediates the relationship between the perceived different categorization of employment and organizational status and challenge- and affiliation-oriented OCBs of an immigrant employee. Finally, an immigrant employee’s organizational tenure weakens (or strengthens) the negative (or positive) impact of immigrant status on challenge-oriented (or affiliation-oriented) OCB. Originality/value From a theoretical standpoint, this study provides a novel theoretical base that guides future research on immigrant employees’ OCBs in organizations. More importantly, this study offers recommendations that help maximize the effectiveness of immigrant employee’s OCBs.

An opportunity sample comprising 281 participants completed a battery of questionnaires, which included questions on sleep, the Anomalous Experience Inventory [1], the STA scale (for measurement of positive schizotypy) [2], the Complex Partial Epileptic-like signs scale of the Personal Philosophy Inventory [3], Hartmann's Short Boundary Questionnaire (BQ) [4], and the revised Transliminality scale [5]. There was no difference between long and short sleepers on anomalous experiences. All personality variables correlated positively with anomalous experiences. A significant difference was found between short and average and average and long sleepers on positive schizotypy. No other personality variables related to sleep variables. A regression path analysis indicated that the strongest predictors of anomalous experiences were personality factors (in particular, Transliminality and Temporal lobe lability). Reduced sleep quality was also a direct predictor. Reduced sleep need was found to be an indirect predictor of anomalous experiences. Findings support the idea that anomalous experiences could be associated with reduced sleep quality, but not sleep length. The relationship between personality and anomalous experiences may be partially modulated by sleep variables. Further research is needed in this area.

Leadership style is not a novel concept and has been discussed widely all over the world. With the acceleration of globalization, organizations have to adapt to new paradigms or approaches of leadership. Therefore, it is important to understand leadership preference among individuals to ensure their willingness to perform their job. Specifically, this study was conducted to identify the relationship between gender, age, education level and working experience and leadership preference. This study intends to understand the leadership preference among Sabah communities which involve three major ethnic groups in Sabah namely Malay-Brunei, Bajau and Kadazan-Dusun. The sample of this research was selected based on purposive convenient sampling whereby all respondents are located in Kota Kinabalu. A questionnaire was administered for data collection with a sample of two hundred and nineteen employees from both the public and the private sectors. The data was analyzed using one way ANOVA and the results showed that the three major ethnic groups in Sabah appear to have similar leadership preference. In addition, no significant difference was found between leadership preferences and the demographic variables.

Rubber trees grow predominately in the southern and eastern areas of Thailand, where there is the majority of rainfall. However, the rubber tree plantations extend to north and northeastern areas, with lower annual rainfall. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rainfall on growth of rubber tree in northeastern areas of Thailand. The outcome of this work should be helped to indicate the optimum area for rubber tree planting in northeast. The study was undertaken using rubber tree clone RRIM600 by comparing the girth at 150 cm at the soil surface, planted in areas of differing rainfall: in Nongkhai, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Roiet and Buriram provinces. The sample of 50 trees was selected in 3 plantations per province (150 trees per province). The results found that there was no significant difference in girth of the rubber trees in all areas. However, the rubber trees planted in Nongkhai, where had highest rainfall, had highest growth. Moreover, the relationship between rainfall and growth exhibited a positive correlation, demonstrating that higher rainfall increased the girth of rubber trees.
