Securitization in a safe new world

This chapter discusses how security has taken conceptual control of the moral space and has thus taken on an ordering quality. Recent decades have seen a gradual securitization that has merged into a greater technological development of digitalization and data analysis. The secularization process initially contributed to the increase in crimes in the 1970s, but this was stopped in the 1990s because of all kinds of preventative security arrangements. But it also contributed to the fear of crime, through the loss of certainty which coherent philosophies of life can offer. The experience of feeling unsafe was a crucial factor in security politics. More and more pragmatic instruments were deployed to prevent crime and to counter the fear of crime. Security became a societal project, in which everyone got involved. However, security is a concept without a final stage — it is difficult to define in a positive way: what is really safe? For that reason, it even gets metaphysical connotations: an infinite desire for safety and certainty.

Today we are witnessing a very rare phenomenon in world history: a state suddenly deluged with an apparently inexhaustible amount of wealth as occurred in sixteenth-century Spain and Portugal when the riches of the New World flowed to the Iberian peninsula. Now the ‘black gold’ under the sands of the Arabian desert has provided one of the most underpopulated and under developed regions of the world with an equivalent bonanza. The new wealth of Spain helped to ruin that country. What will be the fate of Saudi Arabia and its small neighbors?

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of satisfaction among accounting professors in Brazil throughout their careers. The research is classified as descriptive and used a quantitative approach to data analysis. 641 valid responses were obtained from professors from all regions of Brazil. The results show that a feeling of satisfaction prevails among accounting course professors, as most of them “like the profession” and, in general, "are satisfied with it”. It was found that levels of satisfaction are higher among individuals with more experience, in that in their first years in the job (one to three years), professors have lower satisfaction rates; the highest levels of satisfaction are found in the final stage (over 35 years). The main factor that influences satisfaction is personal fulfillment (teaching work and relationship with students). It was also possible to identify that positive feelings about teaching predominate (67.3%) compared to negative ones (32.7%). These results show the need for greater attention to be paid in the early years of the career in order to avoid a "reality clash". They also show the need for other studies to investigate how the phases in the life cycle of accounting professors are characterized.

The technological development of catalytic processes under rapid deactivation requires the rigorous calculation of the deactivation kinetic equation in order to be useful in the simulation and optimization of industrial processes. Accordingly, suitable equipment for reaction and product analysis and a rigorous methodology for kinetic data analysis are required. These aspects are approached in this paper using the transformation of methanol into olefins on a SAPO-18 as the model reaction. In this reaction, deactivation is rapid and there is also an initiation period depending on process conditions. The correct use of gas chromatography allows for improving the collection of experimental data of composition with time-on-stream, given that, on the one hand, it minimizes the time required for analysis (4 min), and on the other, a better homogenization of the reaction product sample is achieved, which allows for a more accurate determination of the composition corresponding to a given time-on-stream. Furthermore, the rigorous kinetic modelling of deactivation requires a data analysis methodology that considers the past history of the catalyst and an activity to be defined based on a rigorous physical meaning. Accordingly, the concept of the integrated kinetic model has been used in this paper, whose basis is the calculation of kinetic parameters by simultaneously solving the zero time-on-stream kinetic model and the kinetic equation for deactivation.

In psychiatry, compared to other medical fields, the identification of biological markers that would complement current clinical interview, and enable more objective and faster clinical diagnosis, implement accurate monitoring of treatment response and remission, is grave. Current technological development enables analyses of various biological marks in high throughput scale at reasonable costs, and therefore ‘omic’ studies are entering the psychiatry research. However, big data demands a whole new plethora of skills in data processing, before clinically useful information can be extracted. So far the classical approach to data analysis did not really contribute to identification of biomarkers in psychiatry, but the extensive amounts of data might get to a higher level, if artificial intelligence in the shape of machine learning algorithms would be applied. Not many studies on machine learning in psychiatry have been published, but we can already see from that handful of studies that the potential to build a screening portfolio of biomarkers for different psychopathologies, including suicide, exists.
