The essential oil of Melaleuca cajuputi was obtained by hydrodistillation method. This work aims to adopt water as a solvent in a batch process to extract essential oil from Melaleuca cajuputi fresh leaves. The leaves are collected from Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. Analysis of constituents was performed by GC/MS. The maximum yield ranged from 0.6 to 0.7%. Several compounds have been identified in high quantities and meaningful qualitative and quantitative differences have been observed under different conditions. The main components of the M. cajuputi essential oil included eucalyptol (27.512%), γ-terpinene (8.59%), terpinolene (9.047%), β-eudesmene (3.359%), α- selinene (3.889%), α-terpineol (4.108%), 1R-α-pinene (2.158%), caryophyllene (6.48%) and α-caryophyllene (3.522%). This study has confirmed that the essential oil of M. cajuputi essential oil is a promising bactericidal agent on several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Chrysophyllum cainito is a lesser-known fruit with several medicinal applications. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, GC/GC-MS. Twenty components were identified in the essential oil, the oil was characterized by a high proportion of fatty acids (69.37%) represented by pyruvic acid, 10-hendecenoic acid, E-9-tetradecenoic acid, pentadecanoic acid, hexodecacanoic acid, and cis-9-octadecenoic acid. The oil yield was 0.19 v/w of the wet sample and its compositional profile showed markedly qualitative and quantitative variation with essential oil from Cuba. This essential oil was seen to be active against gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Samonella typhimurium, and Proteus mirabilis, and also gram-negative bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus agalactia.

The aim of present study was, to investigate the essential oil of Craniotome furcata for its antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of the flowering aerial parts of C. furcata. The oil was tested for its antimicrobial activity in vitro against four Gram-positive, four Gram-negative bacteria and three fungi, by using disk diffusion and tube dilution methods. The antioxidant potential of the essential oil was investigated by two different models DPPH free radical and ABTS free radical cation scavenging. The essential oil was effective against all the tested microorganisms, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 4.11±1.44 to 0.30±0.10 mg/ml. The oil showed antioxidant activity in DPPH free radical and ABTS free radical cation scavenging model. The results of this study revealed that the essential oil of C. furcata possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Detection of carbapenem resistance genes is a critical issue for hospitals due to possible recommendations for infection control and targeted therapy. The Cepheid Xpert instrument, a Carba-R test for the detection and differentiation of five common carbapenemase genes, was tested from September 2020 to February 2021. As part of the approbation, 20 tests were provided. This review presents the results of the approbation of a relatively regular sensitivity study on Siemens WalkAway‑96 plus. Cepheid Xpert Carba-R analysis has been shown to be an accurate and fast tool for detecting colonization by carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria, which can help limit the spread of these organisms in hospitals.

The essential oil of the leaves of Espeletia nana Cuatrec, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC-MS, which allowed the identification of 24 components, which made up 99.9% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were α-pinene (38.1%), β-pinene (17.2%), myrcene (15.0%), spathulenol (4.2%), bicyclogermacrene (4.0%), α-zingiberene (4.0%), and γhimachalene (3.7%). Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar disk diffusion method. Activity was observed only against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC values were determined for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(200 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 (600 μg/mL).

Chemical constituents of the essential oil from the leaves of Minthostachys mollis (Kunth) Griseb Vaught var. mollis collected in January 2008 at Tuñame, Trujillo State, Venezuela, were separated and identified by GCMS analysis. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and thirteen components (98.5% of the sample) were identified by comparison with the Wiley GCMS library data base. The two major components were pulegone (55.2%) and trans-menthone (31.5%). The essential oil showed a significant inhibitory effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, especially Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella typhi (4 μg/mL).

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from two samples (GP1 and GP2) of Grammosciadium platycarpum Boiss. was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The analysis of the oils resulted in the identification of twenty-two constituents. Linalool (79.0% - GP1, 81.8% - GP2) and limonene (10.0%, 5.8%) were found to be the major components, respectively. The in vitro antibacterial activities of these oils and their main compounds against seven Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were investigated. The results exhibited that the total oils and their major components possess strong to moderate activities against all the tested bacteria except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Two extraction methods for subsequent gas chromatographic (GC) determination of volatiles from freshly harvested and aged fennel fruit samples ( Foeniculum vulgare Mill.,ssp. vulgare var. dulce) have been compared. Hydrodistillation followed by GC-FID and GC-MS analysis was used as a standard method for essential oil characterization, while static headspace followed by GC (SHS-GC-FID) was used as a comparative method for determination of volatile components. As the fennel fruit ages, there is a gradual loss of the volatile components as indicated by the lower yield of essential oil and lower content of volatiles, as indicated by the alternative SHS-GC-FID analysis. Slight differences observed for the main components ( trans-anethole, estragole, fenchone, and limonene) using the two methods are negligible, indicating that these volatiles did not undergo chemical transformation during the sample preparation procedures. A difference in anisaldehyde content was observed when the composition of the hydrodistilled essential oil was compared with the SHS-GC-FIDanalysis of volatiles and explanation for the variation of anisaldehyde content and the origin of other compounds was suggested. Comparison of the obtained results showed that limonene oxides, carvone and carveolare detectable in SHS-GC-FID analysis of the aged fennel fruits, while in hydrodistilled samples analyzed by GC-FID they were not present. Another observed difference was the appearance of products in significant amounts with higher retention times than trans-anethole, namely threo- and erythro-anethole β-hydroxymethylether and anethole glycol that are not detectable in the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation. So, the relative abundance of the major components is comparable between these two methods for fennel seed up to 3 years from harvest and they can be used interchangeably depending on the purpose and amount of material. Furthermore, SHS-GC-FID can be used for assessment of maximum storage time and quality of fennel fruit suitable for human consumption.

A survey of 21 clinical isolates of Achromobacter species demonstrated a high level of β-lactamase activity in all strains tested. The β-lactamases were characterized by isoelectric focusing, purification by affinity chromatography, determination of molecular weight, immunological identity, and genetic analysis. At least three distinct patterns of β-lactamases were found in 19 strains. The kinetic values Km and Vmax measured by a microacidimetric method showed that all three types of enzymes are cephalosporinases and did not hydrolyse oxacillin, cloxacillin, and methicillin. Two of the three types of cephalosporinases studied, namely MULB 901 (isoelectric point (pI) 7.4) and MULB 905 (pI 9.3) are enzymes mediated by genes of chromosomal origin. The MULB 906 (pI 8.1) enzyme, however, which has been previously shown to be mediated by an 8.2 MDal nonconjugative plasmid, showed hydrolysis of cefoxitime, cefotaxin, and moxalactam by the bioassay. In all cases, β-lactamase synthesis appeared constitutive. This study confirms that β-lactamase activity is commonly found in Achromobacter and that these enzymes are different and of clinical interest when compared with those observed in other Gram-negative bacteria.
