Objective Inverse association between physical activity and adiposity in children and adolescents have been documented in numerous studies. However, few studies have examined the direction of causation between these two variables. We aimed to examine the prospective bidirectional associations between physical activity and adiposity from childhood to early adulthood. Methods A total of 396 girls (mean age, 11.2 years at baseline) participated in a longitudinal study with 1, 2, 4, and 7 year follow-ups. Body height and weight were measured, body composition was assessed by DXA and BMI and fat mass index (FMI) were calculated. Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and physical inactivity was obtained from questionnaire and physical activity score and inactivity time was calculated. A bivariate cross-lagged panel model was used to estimate the bidirectional associations between physical activity and measures of adiposity across follow-up waves. We further examined whether persistently high or persistently low physical activity or change of physical activity level from low to high and high to low during pubertal years had differential effects on adiposity. For this, the study participants were first divided into two groups according to the median values of their LTPA scores at baseline and at the 7 year follow-up visit. Then four activity groups were formed: consistently high (CH), consistently low (CL), change from high to low (HL), and change from low to high (LH). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with least significant difference post hoc test was used to compare differences in adiposity between the LTPA groups. Results BMI at each measurement wave strongly predicted subsequent BMI (standardized path coefficients ranged from 0.87 to 0.95, p < 0.001 for all). Similar pattern was observed for LTPA and physical inactivity, though the path coefficients tended to be notably smaller. This auto-regressive part of the model indicates that the temporal stability of BMI from childhood to early adulthood is higher than the temporal stability of LTPA or physical inactivity over the same time period. The cross-lagged effects indicated that higher BMI at baseline and at 4-year follow-up predicted lower LTPA at 2-year and 7-year follow-ups, respectively (p<0.05 for both), but LTPA did not predict subsequent BMI at any time point. Similarly, higher FMI at baseline and at 2-year follow-up predicted lower LTPA at subsequent follow-up waves (p<0.05 for both). No associations were found between sedentary time and adiposity between any time points. The difference in participation in LTPA between consistently high and consistently low PA groups were on average 4 hours per week (p<0.001); however, no significant difference in FMI was found at baseline, 2-year or 7-year follow-up). Similarly, no significant difference in FMI was found between the groups whose LTPA level changed from high to low or from low to high.  Conclusions Our results suggest that reduced physical activity in children and adolescents is the result of increased fatness rather than its cause. Current physical activity recommendations may not be sufficient to combat pediatric obesity.

Background: Physical activity is one of the leading health indicators, considered an essential factor in the population's health and quality of life promotion. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Physical inactivity has been linked with chronic disease and obesity in most populations. This study aims to compare the prevalence of physical activity and overweight/obesity among students of the university. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to September 2019 on undergraduate students from different departments of Peshawar University. A sample of 377 (male n = 243, female n = 134) was taken through convenience sampling. Those individuals who were physically disabled and not willing to participate were excluded from the study. Those meeting the inclusion criteria were given the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ short form). Demographic data included age, weight, and height was self-stated by the participants. The levels of physical activity in each of three domains (leisure, transport, and domestic) were calculated and presented as metabolic equivalent (M.E.T.) hour per week in the form of means, percentage, and frequency in different physical activity domains. Results: The overall sample showed that 13.70% of participants were inactive, 27.76% showed a low level of physical activity, 41.29% showed moderate physical activity level, and 17.24% showed a high level of physical activity. A total of 90.98% of participants were involved in leisure physical activities, 93.10% presented transport-related physical activity, and 74.80% were involved in domestic-related physical activity. Average time spent during sitting was found to be 53.32 hrs/week and 7.61 hrs/ day, with females being more involved in sitting activities as compared to males. A significant difference was found between B.M.I. and sitting domain (p-value 0.002) with a Pearson value of -0.12 showing a negative correlation. Conclusion: The B.M.I. and Physical Activity are found negatively associated with each other. Male students were more physically active than females as females spend their majority of time sitting. It is concluded that students are moderately active, while a minimal percent of students are highly active. There were a few numbers of respondents too who were physically inactive, which shows that there is still unawareness of physical activity on the university level.

Abstract Introduction: One variable that has been consistently associated with adolescents’ physical activity is perceived activity competence. Perceived physical (or sport) competence is considered a sub-domain to the physical self-esteem or self-worth (i.e., a person’s valuation of what is good and worthy in their self-description). Objective: This study aimed to describe levels of and inter-correlations among physical self-esteem, physical activity, and body mass index in a longitudinal design spanning adolescence to early adulthood. Materials and methods: At mean ages of 12.7, 15.7, 17.7 and 22.7 years, we measured perceived physical self-esteem in 39 (22 boys) Swedish adolescents. Physical activity (steps/day) for four consecutive schooldays, height, and weight were also measured. Results: No significant difference between the four time points for any variable of perceived physical self-esteem was seen, neither in boys nor girls. In general, all physical self-variables revealed non-linear trajectories across time, where the general trend was an increase during the younger ages followed by a decrease during older ages. At ages 12 and 15 years in boys and girls physical condition and physical strength as well as body attractiveness and physical strength, respectively, had the strongest correlations to physical self-esteem. At age 17 and 22 years sports competence had the strongest correlation to self-esteem in girls, while body attractiveness and physical strength had the strongest correlation to self-esteem in boys. Conclusion: An overall stability in physical self-esteem was found. However the impact of a sub-domain upon physical self-esteem vary during adolescence and early adulthood. Such information may be useful when creating physical activity programs that support and develop physical self-esteem.

This study sought to investigate the prevalence of physical inactivity and related barriers in older Brazilian adults. A cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted, and a stratified random sampling procedure was used. A total of 359 older adults were interviewed. The long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Questionnaire of Barriers to Physical Activity Practice were used to assess physical activity level and barriers, respectively. No statistically significant difference was observed on the prevalence of physical inactivity in either gender or age groups. Regarding barriers, the proportion of 9 out of 22 barriers was statistically significant between men and women. Self-reported physical inactivity/activity in older Brazilian adults continues to be a concern. Uncommonly, older males reported a higher prevalence of physical inactivity compared to their counterparts. Additionally, physical inactivity prevalence continued to increase with the aging process. Yet, personal barriers such as lack of time and poor health were strongly associated with physical inactivity. The results of this study may help health professionals and public policy makers to better address the issues related to a healthy lifestyle among older adults and promote physical activity among Brazilian older adults and in other countries with similar characteristics.

Abstract Background The benefits of physical activity have been identified in children and adolescents. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity in school-aged children and adolescents was high in China. Most time of students spends in neighborhood and school, and these play an important role in student’s MVPA level. Therefore, we will investigate the impact of implementing the national health promotion policy on PA behavior in school-aged children and adolescents and the effects that influence the changes in PA behavior in this study. Methods This is a longitudinal study with a 12-month follow-up. The study sample came from 2016 and 2017 Physical Activity and Fitness in China—The Youth Study, total 1611 students (aged 7–18 years) from 31 primary, junior high, and high schools were included in this study. The physical and social environment in school and neighborhood were measured by questionnaire at baseline and after 12 months. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the relationship of influential factors and moderate- and vigorous MVPA. Results There is no significant difference in MVPA level between 2016 and 2017. Student’s attitudes to PA, neighborhood facilities, and organizations were improved significantly after 12 months. The influential factors changed after 12 months. In 2016 the top three contributors were attitude to MVPA(OR 3.08 with 95% CL 1.22, 7.76), neighborhood PA facilities(OR 1.52, 95% CL 1.24, 1.86) and age(OR 1.38, 95% CL 1.13, 1.69), and in 2017 the top three factors were student’s attitude to PA(OR 4.28, 95%CL 1.788,10.245), school extra time for PA(OR 2.29, 95% CL 1.56, 3.36) and the frequency of sports events in neighborhood(OR 1.84, 95% CL 1.34, 2.53). Conclusions The single health policy is not effective for student’s MVPA promotion. There may be some factors mediate the relationship between neighborhood environment and MVPA level with age and grade increasing. In the future, more studies are needed to explore the change of influential factors and mediators with age. The findings of this study may provide some evidence for future policy-making.

Changes in physical activity levels were followed over 5 years and the relationship between baseline physical activity and survival was investigated among residents of Jyväskylä. Baseline interviews were carried out for 109 men and 204 women age 75, and 67 men and 178 women age 80. At the time of the follow-up interviews 5 years later. 23 men and 37 women who were age 75 at baseline and 23 men and 50 women who were age 80 at baseline had died. Activity decreased significantly over the 5-year period in all groups. A greater proportion of women than men decreased their activity level in both age groups. Physical activity was significantly associated with better survival (p = .006) in the 80-year-old women, and a similar significant difference (p = .024) was observed among 75-year-old men. The differences in the survival curves in the other groups, although similar, were not statistically significant due to the small number of subjects and lack of statistical power.

10511 Background: In the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Dietary Modification (DM) randomized trial, after 8.5 years dietary intervention and 19.5 years cumulative (median) follow-up, dietary intervention participation was associated with a statistically significantly 22% lower breast cancer mortality (P = 0.02). In observational studies, physical activity has been associated with lower breast cancer risk with emerging results now indicating, compared to inactivity, any increase in physical activity has health benefits. Currently, longitudinal data on whether an intervention targeting dietary change influences other health-related behaviors as a gateway effect is limited. To evaluate whether randomization to a dietary intervention was associated with self-directed change in physical activity. Methods: In the WHI DM trial, 48,835 postmenopausal women, ages 50-79 years, with no prior breast cancer and baseline normal mammogram were randomized at 40 US clinical centers to a dietary intervention (19,541) or a comparison group. Dietary goals were to reduce fat intake to 20% of energy and increase intake of vegetable, fruit, and grains addressed in 18 group sessions in year 1 then quarterly. Neither randomization group received specific or ongoing instructions to increase physical activity, but physical activity was referenced in written materials given to the intervention groups in 7 of the 56 sessions. Episodes per week of moderate or vigorous recreational physical activity (MVPA) were collected at baseline and serially through 15.9 years follow-up by self-report questionnaire. Marginal longitudinal logistic regression models were used to assess physically inactive (MVPA = 0) or physically active (MVPA > 0) participants by randomization group. Marginal Poisson regression models estimated mean weekly MVPA by randomization group. Results: 45.6% of participants reported 0 MVPA at baseline which largely persisted throughout follow-up. During cumulative follow-up, relative to the comparison group, dietary intervention group participation was associated with 7% lower physical inactivity rate (odds ratio [OR] 0.93 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.91, 0.95, P < 0.001) and a 4% higher mean MVPA (ratio of means [RM] 1.04 95% CI 1.02, 1.06, P < 0.001). The association between dietary intervention participation with higher physical activity level was stronger with increasing BMI (P-interaction 0.01) and for women with waist circumference ≥ 88 cm (P-interaction 0.02). Conclusions: In conclusion, in a randomized trial setting, a low-fat dietary pattern intervention was associated with a significantly lower physical inactivity rate and significantly higher moderate and vigorous physical activity level which could be associated with health benefits. Background: A decrease in the physical activity level in old age is common, which results in an increase in the number of falls and chronic conditions. Associated with that occurs the decline in motor skills as a result of the deficit in the interaction of cognitive and motor processes. Physical activity level can be associated differently with each motor domains. Objective: We analyzed the relationship between physical activity level and motor aptitude, and to identify which motor domains were most sensitive to detect insufficiently active level in older adults. Methods: Participated in the study 385 elderly people of both sexes. For the evaluation of the subjects were adopted the International Questionnaire on Physical Activity and the Motor Scale for Older Adults. Results: The majority of the elderly were active. In the comparison of motor aptitude between active and insufficiently active (IAC) elders a significant difference was found in the Global Coordination, Balance, Body Scheme and General Motor Aptitude. From the analysis of the area under the curve (AUC), we verified that these domains also were the ones that presented adequate diagnostic accuracy to identify IAC elderly. Besides that active elderly have presented the General Motor Aptitude classified within normality while the IAC below the normal. Conclusion: Our data suggest that IAC older adults present lower motor aptitude than the active elderly, especially in the domains of Global Coordination, Balance, Body Scheme and General Motor Aptitude, and that these domains were sensitive to indicate IAC older adults.

BACKGROUND Quality of life (QoL), physical activity (PA) level and psychological profile (PF) of patients with serious mental illness have been neglected during patient’s management OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected psychotropic drugs on the QoL, PA level and PF of patients with serious mental illness METHODS A cross sectional survey involving one hundred and twenty-four subject [62 Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and 62 apparently healthy subjects as control] using purposive and consecutive sampling respectively .Questionnaires for each of the constructs were administered to the participants for data collation. Analysis of the data was done using non parametric inferential statistics of Mann-Whitney U independent test and Spearman’s rho correlation with alpha level set as 0.05. RESULTS Significant difference was recorded in the QoL (p<0.05) of patient with SMI and apparently healthy psychotropic naive participants. There was a significant correlation between the QoL (p<0.05) and PF of participants with SMI. Participants with SMI had significantly lower QoL than apparently healthy psychotropic naive subject. QoL of the healthy psychotropic naive group was better than those of the participants with SMI. Female participants with SMI had higher PA than their male counterparts CONCLUSIONS Psychological profiles of male participants with SMI were lower than male healthy psychotropic naive participants. Clinicians should take precaution to monitor the QoL, PA level and PF because the constructs are relevant in evaluation of treatment outcome.

Although the efficacy of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is proven, the need to improve patients’ adherence has emerged. There are only a few studies that have investigated the effect of sending text messages after a CR period to stimulate subjects’ ongoing engagement in regular physical activity (PA). A randomized controlled pilot trial was conducted after CR, sending a daily PA text message reminder to an intervention group (IG), which was compared with a usual care control group (CG) during three months of follow-up. Thirty-two subjects were assessed pre- and post-study intervention with GPAQ, submaximal iso-watt exercise testing, a 30 s sit-to-stand test, a bilateral arm curl test, and a final survey on a seven-point Likert scale. A statistically significant difference in the increase of moderate PA time (Δ 244.7 (95% CI 189.1, 300.4) minutes, p < 0.001) and in the reduction of sedentary behavior time (Δ −77.5 (95% CI 104.9, −50.1) minutes, p = 0.004) was shown when the IG was compared with the CG. This was associated with an improvement in heart rate, blood pressure, and patients’ Borg rating on the category ratio scale 10 (CR10) in iso-watt exercise testing (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, only the IG did not show a worsening of the strength parameters in the follow-up leading to a change of the 30 s sit-to-stand test with a difference of +2.2 (95% CI 1.23, 3.17) repetitions compared to CG (p = 0.03). The telemedical intervention has been appreciated by the IG, whose willingness to continue with regular PA emerged to be superior compared to the CG. Text messages are an effective and inexpensive adjuvant after phase 2 CR that improves adherence to regular PA. Further studies are needed to confirm these results in a larger patient population and in the long term.

Abstract Background Physical activity has many health benefits for children and adolescents. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity in school-aged children and adolescents remains high in China. Many factors impact the levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among students. This study investigated the factors associated with students’ MVPA levels and the determinants of changes in their MVPA behaviour. Methods This is a longitudinal study with a 12-month follow-up. The study samples were obtained from 2016 and 2017 Physical Activity and Fitness in China—The Youth Study, and they included 1597 students (aged 9–18 years) from 31 primary, junior high, and high schools in Ningxia Province. Factors related to the individual (Age, Sex, BMI and attitude to PA), school (school exercise facility, PE class, teacher support, PA time and PA environment) and neighbourhood (free skill training, sport events, sport organization, sport facility) factors were measured via questionnaire at baseline and after 12 months. Multiple logistic regression was performed to examine the factors that impact students’ MVPA level and the determinants of changes in students’ MVPA behaviour. Results There was no difference in students’ MVPA levels between 2016 and 2017. Boys were more physically active than girls at baseline (RR 1.55, 95% CI 1.10, 2.20). Neighbourhood factors associated students’ MVPA levels were significant, but all of these factors (neighbourhood sport events, organizations, facilities, etc.) were removed from the longitudinal model. Individual and school factors were important for students’ MVPA maintenance and positive development (e.g., gender, attitude, school PE class and PA time). Conclusions In conclusion, both neighbourhood and school factors may affect students’ MVPA, but school appears to plays a more critical role in maintaining and promoting students’ MVPA levels. In addition, individual factors may be more important than school and neighbourhood factors in influencing students’ MVPA levels. Our research demonstrates that students’ attitudes towards PA and school factors should be considered targets for future intervention programmes to promote MVPA. More education programmes may help enhance students’ attitudes towards PA, but more studies with large samples and objective assessments are needed to explore the determinants of MVPA.
