Anxiety is a vague concern and discomfort that a person feels about himself because of a threat to the person's value system or security pattern. It is caused by not being able to interact fully with the environment because of the lack of sensory information and the misinterpretation of the information received through emotions. Anxiety, which has an important effect in daily life, also has important effects on education life. Stress, which shows similar features with anxiety, is an important issue in education because it has potential to inhibit learning and performance. In order to increase learning outcomes and ensure critical thinking, educators should define students’ level of anxiety and minimize it. Touching is a simple skill that can be applied by educators during the clinic training without the need for a course. Positive and appropriate contacts of the educators make them feel good to the students and students think they are important. Studies show that students are anxious before skill training and anxiety reduces the success and performance of them. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of touching on anxiety and the success of students during skill training of intravenous catheterization. The research was conducted in the skill training laboratory of a nursing faculty as using the quasi-experimental method with control group through the pre and post-test between December 2016 and January 2016. The sample was constructed from the experimental group (n=65) and the control group (n=65) as 130 people and single blinding was done. The experimental group of students’ shoulders, arms or hands were touched by educators during skill training of intravenous catheterization. In the collection of the data, The Personal Information Form, The Intravenous Catheterization Skill Practice Checklist, The State-Trait Anxiety Scale and intravenous catheterization training model were used. The mean age of the experimental group was 20.36 ± 0.76 years and the mean age of the control group was 20.20 ± 0.75 years. 89.2% of the experimental group and 93.8% of the control group consisted of women. As the personality trait, 47.7% of the experimental group and 36.9% of the control group were defined themselves as calm. It was determined that the State Anxiety Scale score of the control and experiment group decreased after skill training of intravenous catheterization but there was a significant difference between the State Anxiety Scale Score of pre and post-skill training only in the experimental group. It was detected that the success of skill was higher in the experimental group. In line with these findings, it is recommended that educators should observe anxiety of the students and they should apply simple touching to students who has high pre-skill anxiety. Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file. Uygulama grubunun %89.2’si, kontrol grubunun %93.8’i kadınlardan oluşmaktaydı.

Wound dressing is a skill which must be able to be performed by all nurses. If the practical ability of a nurse is weak, it will affect the quality of patient care. The objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of the latex wound model for wound dressing training on wound dressing skills of the nursing student. The latex wound model is a device used in practice which is made from rubber. The samples are the 60 second-year nursing students. Simple random sampling was applied in the selection of samples to be an experimental group and a control group for 30 persons per group. The latex wound model was provided to the experimental group for wound dressing skill training at the dormitory for a seven day period. A personal data questionnaire, wet dressing skill evaluation form, and dry dressing skill evaluation form were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney U Test. The results indicated that: 1) the mean score of wet dressing skill and dry dressing skill after the intervention were significantly higher than before the intervention (p < .05); 2) the mean score of wet dressing skill and dry dressing skill of the experimental group were higher than that of the control group, who was given the explanation of research procedures and the use of latex wound model, at statistical significance (p < .05). The findings imply that the use of the latex wound model for wound dressing training could enhance the wound dressing practical skill of the nursing students.

Education is a two-sided coin, with teaching technique and curriculum on one side and student effort and motivation on the other side.  Much educational research is directed predominately at the teaching side, while slighting the student's side.  This study reports an experiment that emphasizes the role of the student’s effort in learning.  The students in the experimental group were asked to compare their individual effort and test score to the mean reported effort and test score of the class.  They were then asked to consider making adjustments in their efforts with the hope of improving their performance.  As a result, the students in the experimental group increased their study hours and significantly increased their exam scores as compared to the control group students.  The results of this study indicate that actively reminding students of their effort and performance in course work has a positive effect on students' effort of study which can ultimately translate into improvement of academic performance.

AbstractThe aims of this study were to analyse the effect of chronic strength training over concentric power (CON), eccentric power (ECC), ECC/CON ratio, and 20 m linear sprint performance in elite young soccer players. Twenty young elite Spanish soccer players were assigned to an experimental group (CPG) which performed a front-step exercise using a conical pulley, 2–3 sets of 6 repetitions each leg, during 9 weeks (CPG, n=10) in addition to its usual strength training, or to a control group (CG, n=10). The improvements in the ECC mean power (36%, ES=1.61), and ECC / CON ratio (17%, ES=1.77) were substantially greater in the CPG than in the CG while the CON mean power (16%, ES=0.83) was substantially greater in the CG than in the CPG. The sprinting time for 10 m (2.8%, ES=0.78) and the 10 m flying time between 10–20 m (1.72%, ES=0.41) were substantially enhanced in CPG and CG respectively. To be efficient when defining a functional strength training and performance increments using an inertial device, the mean power output need to be measured during the CON and ECC phases and an analysis of the ECC / CON ratio should be included.

The present study examined whether popping air capsules affects students' state anxiety. One group of university students were asked to pop air capsules for 5 min. (experimental group); another group did nothing (the control group). Both groups were tested on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Analyses showed that there was a difference in mean State Anxiety scores between the two groups, with the control group having a lower mean than the experimental group, which was contrary to our expectation. The findings are discussed in relation to an earlier published study of the effects of popping air capsules on changing a person's mood.

Introduction and objectives: The prevalence of preoperative state anxiety is an unavoidable complication. Aside from its type and scope, the surgical operation is considered as a severe stressful situation for patients. Considering the importance of reducing the state anxiety in patients undergoing surgery, there are different methods, one of which is patient education; therefore the aim of the current study was compare the effect of written and planned training on the state anxiety among patients undergoing orthopedic surgery.Method: In this study, 81 patients candidate for orthopedic surgery were selected using convenience sampling and were randomly divided into 3 groups, including planned training, pamphlet and control groups. All patients answered 20 questions-State-Traits Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Questionnaire the day before surgery and the intervention was later carried out in the planned training and pamphlet groups. Then the effect of preoperative state anxiety was re-evaluated about half an hour after training in three groups. For data analysis, in addition to mean and standard deviation, independent t-test and ANOVA were used in Spss16.Results: The results of comparing pre- and post-training mean score of the state anxiety in three groups showed that the mean score of state anxiety reached from 50.41 to 41.03, 52.41 to 44.37 and 45.04 to 50.56 in planned, pamphlet and control groups, respectively. ANOVA test showed that there is a significant difference in this comparison. The results of Tukey's test also revealed that the mean score of state anxiety in the planned and pamphlet groups was lower significantly than the control group (p<0.05).Conclusion: Based on research findings, the planned training method was more effective in decreasing state anxiety among patients compared to the pamphlet group before orthopedic surgery. Therefore, considering the fact that nurses play an important role in examining and relieving the state anxiety among patients and spend more time with patients undergoing surgery compared with other members of the healthcare team, therefore, the planned training method must be considered to ensure effective support to reduce the preoperative state anxiety among patients.

Aim: This research is planned to identify the effect of exercise on death anxiety in women in the post-menopausal period. Methods: This research is an experiment patterned study (Pre-test/post-test control group model). This model is a two-factor experimental design that shows repetitive measurements (pre-test- post-test) and subjects (experiment-control) in different categories. A total of 36 women voluntarily participated in the study in Erzincan, including 18 women in the experimental group who go through menopause and exercise, and 18 women in the control group who go through menopause and never exercise. The experimental group were given Pilates exercises 3 days a week for 8 weeks, and the control group were asked to preserve their daily lives without regular exercise. In the research, personal information form containing sociodemographic variables of individuals and the Templer Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) form adapted to Turkish by Akça, Köse (2008) were used as data collection tools. After identifying the distribution characteristics in the analysis of the data, paired t-test was used for in-group comparisons and independence sample t-test was used for intergroup comparisons in order to identify the effectiveness of the exercise program and to discover the difference between the first and last test scores of the groups. Results: In the Death Anxiety Scale, the mean death anxiety score was found to be 8.66 as a result of the pre-test performed in the experimental group. And after the exercise, the mean score was 8.38. Although there was no statistically significant difference, there was a decrease in the death anxiety score averages. The mean pre-exercise death anxiety score of the control group was found to be 8.33. The mean post-exercise score was found to be 8.22. Conclusion: There was no significant effect of 8 weeks of exercise on death anxiety. It is understood that even if exercise has some positive physical and psychological contributions on the subjects during this period, a strong anxiety such as death cannot be eliminated in such a short time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the personality characteristics in adolescents with SLE. The research design is a case-control study by means of the Rorschach Method and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. Study group: 30 female adolescents with lupus, 12–17 years of age. The SLE Disease Activity Index was administered during the period of psychological evaluation. Control group: 32 nonpatient adolescents were matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic level. In the Wechsler Intelligence Scale the mean IQ of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group (77 and 98, respectively, p < .001). In the Rorschach, the lupus patients showed greater difficulty in interpersonal interactions, although they displayed the resources to process affect and to cope with stressful situations. A positive moderate correlation (p = .069) between the activity index of the disease and the affect constriction proportion of the Rorschach was observed: the higher the SLEDAI score, the lower the capacity to process affect. There is a negative correlation between the activity index of the disease and the IQ (p = .001): with a higher activity index of the disease, less intellectual resources are available.
