Abstract In this study, we analyze the meaning and use of Mandarin causal connectives kějiàn ‘therefore/it can be seen that’, suǒyǐ ‘so’, yīncǐ ‘for this reason’, and yúshì ‘thereupon/as a result’ in terms of causality and subjectivity. We adopt an integrated approach to subjectivity and analyze the subjectivity profile of a causal construction in terms of three features: the propositional attitude of the consequent, the identity of the subject of consciousness (SoC), and the linguistic realization of the SoC. The investigation is based on natural discourse produced in fundamentally distinctive channels, namely, spontaneous conversation, microblogging, and formal writing. Compared to previous studies, the empirical foundation is therefore enlarged and more varied. The results show that these connectives differ systematically from each other with regard to the above three features, and that the differences remain robust across the three discourse types. The relative importance of each feature in characterizing the connectives is also determined. The propositional attitude appears to be the most important subjectivity feature, followed by the linguistic realization of the SoC and the identity of the SoC.

This study tries to find out what is meant by the expression "objective correlative" and to follow its different translations into Arabic according to its chronology. It also tries to show similarities and differences in those translations by giving reasons for each of them، and the obstacles that face readers to understand the meaning and semantics of the expression. Then، the study proceeds to discover the nature، the conception، and the main components of this expression، and its main aim to find out objective and sensitive correlative for the hidden feelings of the poet’s world through art and sensory images and forms that are reviewable and which are able to stimulate an emotional state for the receiver which is similar to that of the poet himself. The study depends on the data taken from the integrated approach and borrows many of its means and procedures to describe and analyze the data in this study in response to the nature of the subject whose components stretch to contain matters. Some relate to the source language (English) and obstacles in translation، others relate to the target language (Arabic) and the issues of tandem، verb al joint،echoic and its effect on translating the expression. Some relate to the practical aspects of some texts which were included in the study and the integrated and comprehensive view needed for poetry. This study comes to some conclusions، such as: The expression "objective correlative" focuses on the external sensitive correlative of the inner feeling of the poet. The different practical experiences are polarizing on constructive and stylistic forms that are able to express forms، and give images at the same time. The uses of language for certain propose are able to represent the inner abstract feeling of the poet through sensitive images that reveal the poet’s feelings and thoughts and to draw a similar image in the reader's awareness.

This book, based on over two decades of research conducted by Robinson and colleagues, is primarily about poststroke emotional sequelae. Major topics include depression, mania, and anxiety, each organized by chapter headings and similar chapter subheadings. Robinson defines each emotional problem, explains how it is diagnosed, compares it to brain–behavior relationships, and recommends treatment, all the while weaving an empirical foundation that matches interpretations and ideas with results. The fabric of this foundation consists mainly of Robinson's collective research. Case histories sprinkled throughout capture the essence of his remarks, bringing them to life for the reader. Contributions of his predecessors are reported as an historical base. As a result, Robinson brings under one cover the wealth of knowledge and information we currently have on the subject of emotional disorders following vascular brain injury.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the use of an integrated approach of fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP) and TOPSIS in evaluating the performance of global third party logistics service providers for effective supply chain management.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the integration of fuzzy AHP with TOPSIS is proposed in determining the relative importance (weight) of criteria and then ranking of 3PLs.FindingsFindings show that the logistics cost and service quality are two most important criteria for performance rating of 3PLs. Deciding the relative importance of various criteria for 3PLs evaluation is a complex task. The superiority of one criterion over the other varies from person to person and firm to firm. Therefore, to capture the variability in decision fuzzy extended AHP is very useful tool. Finally, the preference raking of alternatives are found using TOPSIS.Research limitations/implicationsFuzzy AHP is a complex methodology and requires more numerical calculations than the traditional AHP and hence it increases the effort. But in this paper single stage fuzzy AHP is used to simplify the process. Fuzzy AHP is integrated with TOPSIS for preference ranking of 3PL, which provides a good methodology to rank 3PLs.Originality/valueThere is a lack of research in the literature to deal directly with the uncertainty of human decisions in evaluating the relative importance of multiple criteria. Therefore, fuzzy AHP is an appropriate methodology to find the relative importance of the criteria to rank the 3PLs using TOPSIS.

This paper discusses the results of a study regarding the impact of using Project-Based Learning (PBL) to enhance the understanding of the concepts related to Pipe Network Analysis, a subtopic of Fluid Mechanics, studied by students enrolled in a mechanical engineering degree. It has been frequently reported by students and professors alike, that a lecture-only approach is not effective in terms of helping students grasp the fundamentals of a subject, nor does it help students in actual problem solving where different variables have to be catered to, which may have been ignored in a conventional lecture. Therefore, in this study, a more open-ended, complex project-based approach was used in addition to the lectures on the subject of Pipe Network Analysis. The project required students to design a pipe network for a scaled setup based on specified fluid flow and pressure head requirements at different nodes. An experimental setup that implemented these pipe networks was also developed in order to validate the theoretical results. The students’ grades and their documented responses were used as the criterion for compiling and analyzing the results. We also describe how we incorporated PBL into the classrooms in order to improve the learning experience, and evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method. The overall results show that the students were proactively engaged in the PBL activity, linking their knowledge to the real world, which ultimately led to improved concept development.
