Abstract In the research described in this paper, studied was sorption capacity of natural and ferric modification of zeolite tuff containing mineral clinoptilolite from the Nižný Hrabovec deposit to remove potentially toxic metals (ionic forms of chromium, nickel, copper and aluminium) from their water solutions. We reported that the Fe (III) zeolite has an enhanced ability to sorption of Cu (II), and a slight improvement occurs in the case of Cr (VI) and Ni (II). On the other hand, the deterioration was observed in the case of Al (III) adsorption.

The removal of heavy metals from wastewaters is a matter of paramount importance due to the fact that their high toxicity causes major environmental pollution problems. One of the most efficient, applicable and low cost methods for the removal of toxic metals from aqueous solutions is that of their adsorption on an inorganic adsorbent. In order to achieve high efficiency, it is important to understand the influence of the solution parameters on the extent of the adsorption, as well as the kinetics of the adsorption. In the present work, the adsorption of Cu(II) species onto TiO2 surface was studied. It was found that the adsorption is a rapid process and it is not affected by the value of ionic strength. In addition, it was found that by increasing the pH, the adsorbed amount of Cu2+ ions and the value of the adsorption constant increase, whereas the value of the lateral interaction energy decreases.

Abstract The sorption kinetics of uranyl ions micro-quantities from fluoride solutions by nanostructured materials with anatase mesoporous structures has been studied. Using the model of competitive sorption of ions and positively charged complexes of uranyl ion on deprotonated hydroxyl groups of an anatase, kinetic curves of changes in the ratio of ionic forms of uranium in solution were calculated. Modeling was carried out under the assumption of a two-stage mechanism of uranium complex ions sorption. The modeling considered the influence of the uranyl ion carbonate complexes formation. The shift in equilibrium among ionic forms of uranyl correlates with the stability of the complexes in solution.

The content of heavy metals - Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu - in oak wood of <i>Quercus robur</i> L. and in the soil was investigated. The studies were carried out in five areas: on the Krotoszyn Plateau, in two areas of the Copper Basin, in the area of Zawiercie and in the control area in Kórnik. The results showed an elevated content of copper in the wood of oaks from the Krotoszyn Plateau as compared with oaks from the other investigated areas. The copper content in the examined oaks was 0.6 µg/g in Kórnik, 1.1 µg/g in Zawiercie, 3.9-15.8 µg/g in the Copper Basin, whereas in the oaks of the Krotoszyn Plateau it amounted to 7.0-26.5 µg/g. It was also noticed that there is a correlation between the copper content in the wood and sanitary condition of the trees. The content of other toxic metals in the oak stands of the Krotoszyn Plateau was on the level of non-polluted areas ranging between 0.08-0.21 µg/g for Cd, 0.12-0.45 µg/g for Pb and 9.1-14.7 µg/g for Zn.

Qualitative analyses of water from the River Danube were conducted to determine changes in the concentrations of heavy metals during the period 1985 to 1987. The samples were collected from a locality situated on the right bank of the river at the village of Vinča. The heavy metals Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, As, Ni, and Hg were found to be constantly present in the river water, whereas Cr3+ and Cr6+ were not detected. It was found that the tendency for levels of these heavy metals to increase had ceased. The number of samples containing major ecotoxic elements (Pb, Cd, and Hg) was reduced, and a slight improvement was also recorded with regard to the other heavy metals, with the exception of Zn.

This study aimed to investigate the levels of heavy metals in the lipstick products. In general, 30 samples were randomly selected from Mashhad markets. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t test were used to compare color and price variables. Based on the results, the mean concentrations of studied elements were as follows: Cd (ND-0.52 µg/g), Cr (0.25-76.35 µg/g), Ni (ND-20.12 µg/g), Zn (ND-224.22 µg/g), Pb (ND-44.77 µg/g), and Hg (ND-0.32 µg/g). The presence of toxic metals in the samples, and on the other hand, continuous use and unintended ingestion of these metals can lead to their biological accumulation in the human body, thereby causing the development of different diseases. Hence, it deems necessary to apply suitable actions for the improvement of quality control over these products.

Background: Effective treatment of wastewaters for potentially toxic metals especially at affordable cost is critical to the well-being of man and the environment. Objective: This study optimized the conditions for the application of Calophyllum inophyllum seed husk as biosorbent for simultaneous removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions and investigated the removal efficiencies of the biosorbent for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in wastewater samples. Methods: The dependence of the adsorption process on pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, initial metal ions concentration, and contact time was evaluated in a batch system by determining the degree of adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in simulated industrial wastewater before application of the biosorbent for metals cleanup in industrial and domestic wastewater samples. Results: The results showed that charring and microwave irradiation of the biosorbent produced the best performance. The pH of the aqueous solution played a crucial role in the performance of the biosorbent. Optimum adsorption for both metals occurred within the first 60 minutes of the process at pH value around 9. Kinetic studies of the process gave good correlation coefficients for a pseudo-second order kinetic model with adsorption data that fitted well into the Freundlich and Langmuir models but with Freundlich isotherm displaying better fitness. The adsorption capacities of the biosorbent were 42.19 and 22.47 mg/g for Pb2+ and Cd2+, respectively. Conclusion: The study concluded that the good adsorption capacities of Calophyllum inophyllum seed husk for the metals is an indications of its considerable potential as a low-cost biosorbent for simultaneous removal of potentially toxic metals from wastewaters.

This study was based on to determine the concentration of macro and micro nutrients as well as toxic and nontoxic heavy metals present in the chicken feed available in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. All macro nutrients, if present in the feed at high concentration have some adverse effect, at the same time if this nutrient present in the feed at low concentration this have some adverse effect too. So that this nutrient level should be maintained at a marginal level. On the other side toxic heavy metals if present in the feed at very low concentration those can contaminate the total environment of the ecosystem. In this study six brand samples (starter, grower, finisher and layer) which was collected from different renowned chicken feed formulation industry in Bangladesh. Those samples were prepared for analysis by wet ashing and then metals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. It was found that 27.7 to 68.4, 57.3 to 121.9, 0.21 to 4.1, 0.32 to 2.1, 0.11 to 1.58, 0.28 to 2.11 and 0.28 to 1.78 for zinc, iron, copper, mercury, cadmium, nickel and cobalt respectively. It was found that essential macro and micro nutrients were present in the feed in low concentration on the other side mercury was present in high concentration in the feed samples.

The kinetics of the reaction of solid sodium carbonate with sulfur dioxide depends on the microstructure of the solid, which in turn is affected by the way and conditions of its preparation. The active form, analogous to that obtained by thermal decomposition of NaHCO3, emerges from the dehydration of Na2CO3 . 10 H2O in a vacuum or its weathering in air at room temperature. The two active forms are porous and have approximately the same specific surface area. Partial hydration of the active Na2CO3 in air at room temperature followed by thermal dehydration does not bring about a significant decrease in reactivity. On the other hand, if the preparation of anhydrous Na2CO3 involves, partly or completely, the liquid phase, the reactivity of the product is substantially lower.
