Meetings of different cultures in today's global multicultural society are occurring almost every moment in the most diverse forms of communication. Intercultural communication due to an increased interdependence between people of different cultures, religions, languages and world view becomes a reality of everyday life, where encounters culture imply the necessity of quality mutual correlation based on the idea of interculturalism. Given that childhood is considered an extremely important period of human life, 18 institutions of early and preschool upbringing and education are the places of the first formal outbound socialization and the earliest institutional transfer of socially accepted norms and values, as well as the places where the forms of intercultural relations are applied in society. This paper gives an overview of the results of empirical research aimed at determining the level of basic knowledge in the field of interculturalism and examining the desirable intercultural competence of the educators, and the effectiveness of intercultural action in the early and preschool upbringing and education process.

Intercultural communication is an interdisciplinary science that studies issues such as the interaction between people of different cultures, the emergence and preservation of cultural diversity, and the perception of foreigners. With globalization; the denaturation of the borders between the countries, the emergence of cultural diversity, an increase in intercultural communication and interaction are observed. Insuch an environment; multiculturalism, intercultural communication process, and intercultural communication competence is gaining importance. Multiculturalism refers to the existence of different cultures in a pluralistic society. Intercultural communication illustrates the communication and interaction between different cultures. Intercultural competence is with the acceptance of differences and the desireto livetogether. In this context, as a result of partnerships and cultural agreements between countries, various international student programs like Erasmus program take place between higher education institutions within the lifelonglearning. The implementations in higher education institutions where such education programs are carried out are the basis of this research. Cultural problems that the students who come to study here at Kocaeli University Faculty of Communication through different programs face in the educational process are discussed in the context of intercultural communication. In the study, qualitative research method was used. For students open-ended questions was applied in the form of an interview consisting of. The population of the study is comprised of foreign students studying at Kocaeli University Faculty of Communication by way of different programs. The data obtained by choosing sampling criteria, one of the purposive sampling methods, are assessed by classifying them according to certain characteristics. As a result, even though they lived some problems of international students in the education process, multicultural education in higher education institutions by enabling the formation of cultural environment they are to create awareness have been observed. In addition, this educational environments, with the acquisitions of intercultural communication and competence, bias by getting rid of the molds, are expected to develop awareness of the coexistence of different cultures. ÖzetKültürlerarası iletişim, farklı kültürlere mensup insanlar arasında iletişim, kültürel farklılıkların ortaya çıkması ve korunması, yabancının algılanması gibi konuları inceleyen disiplinler arası bir bilim dalıdır. Küreselleşme ile birlikte; ülkeler arasındaki sınırların yapaylaştığı, kültürel farklılıkların ortaya çıktığı, kültürlerarası iletişim ve etkileşimin arttığı görülmektedir. Böyle bir ortamda; çokkültürlülük, kültürlerarası iletişim süreci ve kültürlerarası iletişim yeterliliği olguları önem kazanmaktadır. Çokkültürlülük, çoğulcu toplumlarda farklı kültürlerin varlığını ifade etmektedir. Kültürlerarası iletişim, farklı kültürler arasındaki iletişim ve etkileşimi göstermektedir. Kültürlerarası yeterlilik ise, farklılıkların kabulü ve birlikte yaşama isteği ile gerçekleşmektedir. Bu bağlamda; ülkeler arasındaki birliktelikler ve kültürel anlaşmalar sonucunda, Yüksek Öğretim Kurumlar’ı arasında, çeşitli uluslararası öğrenci programları gerçekleşmektedir. Bu eğitim programlarının görüldüğü, Yüksek Öğretim Kurumları’ndaki uygulamaları çalışmanın temelini oluşturmaktadır. Farklı programlarla Kocaeli Üniversitesi İletişim Fakültesi’nde eğitim görmek amacıyla gelen yabancı öğrencilerin eğitim sürecinde karşılaştıkları kültürel problemler, kültürlerarası iletişim çerçevesinde ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada, nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilere yönelik açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan bir görüşme formu uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini, farklı programlarla gelen Kocaeli Üniversitesi İletişim Fakültesi’nde eğitim gören yabancı öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden ölçüt örnekleme seçilerek elde edilen veriler, belirli özelliklere göre sınıflandırılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak uluslararası öğrencilerin eğitim sürecinde bazı sorunlar yaşamalarına rağmen, gittikleri Yüksek Öğretim Kurumları’nda çokkültürlü eğitim ortamlarının oluşumuna olanak sağlayarak, kültürel farkındalık oluşturdukları görülmektedir. Ayrıca bu eğitim ortamları sayesinde kültürlerarası iletişim ve yeterlilik kazanımlarıyla, önyargı kalıplarından kurtularak, farklı kültürlerle birlikte yaşama bilincinin gelişeceği düşünülmektedir.

A new view has been formed on studying foreign languages nowadays: the aim is to make students aware of peculiarities concerning consciousness and culture of another people, that is reflected in its language. The result of studying foreign languages is the acquired intercultural competence based on the formed «world view» of another people, that provides efficient interaction among communicators from various cultures. The article deals with the ways offorming students ’ «world view» of another people in the process of studying a foreign language on the grounds of the concept regarding a person’s cultural development and the theory of activity, that is worked out by representatives of cognitive psychology (L. Vygotsky, О. Leontiev, P. Galperin, І. Zymnia and others). The results of their scientific search have proved that that the language is inseparably connected with the people’s culture; its studying should be realised in a sociocultural context; a sufficient level of mastering a language, which allows using it as a means of communication, confirms the fact ofperceiving the peculiarities of culture reflected in the language. The main method of studying a foreign language is contrasting and comparing realia in a wide context of different cultures. The pedagogical practice justifies the scientists ’ conclusion: studying foreign languages should be built on culturological and communication- and activity approaches, and focused on formation of each student - a future participant of the process of intercultural communication. Students’ consciousness is enriched and their level of communicative culture is improved through perception of realia of another culture, peculiarities of its representatives ’ world outlook.

RÉSUMÉ. La gastronomie est un élément inséparable de la vie humaine. Elle possède sa propre cosmologie qui s’attache à la culture d’une nation. Comparer deux cultures différentes vers la gastronomie ouvre un nouveau paradigme de réfléchir pour recueillir un point de vue sur le monde puisqu’il s’agit de la communication interculturelle qui amène aux étudiants au savoir-vivre côte à côte. Cette étude tente donc d’analyser l‘interculturalité pour résoudre les problèmes de la compréhension culturelle à partir des termes culinaires en français et en indonésien ainsi que les valeurs comprises. La recherche est menée en utilisant la méthode descriptive-qualitative, en observant les données d’une manière linguistique et culturelle. Comme les données viennent de cultures différentes, il est pratiqué donc de mesures comparatives. Les résultats de cette recherche montrent que la gastronomie comprend des symboles et qu’elle prend une position pertinente dans la conception culturelle surtout dans la formation de stéréotypes basée sur la langue. Ce résultat d’analyse n’est qu’un simple exemplaire de l’étude interculturelle qui propose encore de possibilités à développer. Mots-clés : interculturalité, gastronomie, symbolisme.     ABSTRACT. Gastronomy is an inseparable element of human life. It has its own cosmology that ties into the culture of a nation. Comparing two different cultures towards gastronomy opens up a new paradigm of thinking to gather a point of view on the world since it is about intercultural communication which brings students to life skills side by side. This study therefore attempts to analyze interculturality in order to solve the problems of cultural understanding from culinary terms in French and Indonesian as well as the values understood. The research is conducted using the descriptive-qualitative method, observing the data linguistically and culturally. As the data come from different cultures, there are therefore comparative measures. Research results show that gastronomy includes symbols and that it takes a relevant position in cultural conception, especially in the formation of stereotypes. This finding of the analysis is only a simple copy of the intercultural study which still has possibilities to develop. Keywords: interculturality, gastronomy, symbolism.

Abstract People and communities living geographically far from each other and originating from culturally different environments establish contact with each other by means of the sudden spread of information and communication technologies. Knowledge of world languages no longer suffices for engaging in successful social interaction, it has to be accompanied by intercultural competence. Intercultural communication occurs when interlocutors belonging to different cultures understand each other. The translator’s work can be also understood as intercultural communication since in addition to translating linguistic material, the translator also transcodes the culture of the source language into the target language. (Inter)cultural competence is therefore one of the basic requirements for a translator. There is an ever-increasing emphasis on mediation between different cultures in translation, and according to new interpretations of translation this mediation represents the keystone of translation. The present study examines how elements of Hungarian culture are rendered in Serbian and German by analysing translations of Hungarian authors’ works into these two languages.

The article identifies the prerequisites for the emergence of intercultural communication as a subject of research, points to the priority objectives of studies in the field of intercultural communication in the European community. It considers the issue of formation of intercultural competence as a necessary factor for the process of communication between representatives of different cultures while training professionals of a new generation. The content of the concept of “intercultural communication” is revealed, the problematic issues of its formation in the process of mastering a foreign language are analyzed in the article. Knowledge of foreign languages helps to relieve psychological barriers, to be more confident while communicating with foreign partners, and be more compatible in modern world. It has been found that certain problems associated with involvement in different cultures are likely to occur when communicating with representatives of different cultures. Communication between people of different cultures is complicated not only by different languages, but also by the fact that this process is influenced by different cultural standards. The relevance of the concept of “intercultural competence” is substantiated, various views of Western scholars on the essence and structure of the concept of “intercultural competence” are presented in the article. The authors suggest models of intercultural competence which show that intercultural competence of future professionals is an integral part of their professional activity. Different views on the formation of a personality of a mediator between cultures are considered. The definitions of “mediator of cultures”, “bilingual personality”, “secondary linguistic personality” are given. Within the concept of “secondary linguistic personality” attention is paid to its special model, which is formed in the process of mastering a second foreign language. The article focuses on the analysis of characteristic features of a mediator of cultures.

The importance of intercultural communication in today’s globalised world is undeniable. Scholars from different countries have contributed to the development of this field and created educational materials – textbooks on intercultural communication devoted to classifications and features of different cultures – and textbooks on foreign languages that include exercises devoted to developing intercultural skills in everyday and professional contexts. Teachers of foreign languages are making an effort to use the available materials that provide a wide outlook on various cultures and help students prepare for being a part of intercultural community. However, there is an evident shortage of such materials in languages other than English. The article provides the results of the analysis of online sources that demonstrates that the majority of available resources that are in any way connected with intercultural communication are in English. The article dwells on the reasons for English dominance in intercultural communication study and suggests a global effort as a solution. Whether we are looking at textbooks purely on intercultural communication or foreign language learning resources, it is important to understand that the English language cannot be the only medium of intercultural competence formation – other languages can and should be a prism through which intercultural communication is studied.

The world turns out to be a small village due to globalization and communication technologies. In this new world, different cultures and communication means have interlaced and started to increasingly affect each other, leading communication and culture to transform into two organic structures that feed each other. The culture in which individuals socialize also determines these individual’s ways of communication. It is necessary to examine the communicational behaviors of the members of given societies to distinguish the differences between these cultures. The skills of different people who live in different cultures in enduring the information load would also be different. Today, it is possible to transfer any information via news media in an instant. This, as a result, increases the significance of new media in intercultural communication.

Intercultural competence (IC) is a concept which has gained importance in recent years. It seems to be transparent, accepted as well as used both in formal and informal situations. This concept can be defined as an individual’s capability to communicate effectively and appropriately with other people who have different cultures, norms, and values. In order for a person to be labeled as an intercultural speaker with intercultural competence, s/he should have the competence of intercultural attitude, skill, and knowledge. However, this competence has not been noticed and assessed comprehensively inside and outside academia, particularly in the setting of English language teaching. Hence, this study aims to assess and determine the level of intercultural competence of state junior high school English teachers in Yogyakarta. This study involved 260 participants taken using cluster random sampling from the whole population of 790 state junior high school English teachers. Data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire. Afterward, the data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Kruskal Wallis test along with prerequisite of normality. This study revealed that the level of IC of state junior high school English teachers in Yogyakarta was high. Moreover, it has been found that their level of intercultural attitude (IA), intercultural skill (IS), and intercultural knowledge (IK) were categorized as high. In other words, these results indicate that the state junior high school English teachers in Yogyakarta have a capability to mingle with diverse people using a language effectively and appropriately. Importantly, this study showed that there were no significant differences in their IC level according to where they teach in four districts and one city. These mean that the locations where they teach do not affect their level of intercultural competence.

The meetings of different cultures in the modern world are taking place almost every moment in the various forms of communication. Development of attitudes towards culturally different people becomes a key factor in dealing with the inevitable changes caused by the transition of unique monocultures in the cultural pluralistic community. Mutual contacts of members of different cultures thereby imply the necessity of quality interrelations based on the idea of interculturalism that occurs as a possible solution for quality coexistence in a multicultural society. Faced with the consequences of mass migration at the global level, educational institutions become the meeting point of different cultures, resulting in a need of installing of intercultural principles in the educational systems of European countries. Intercultural education education, viewed in the the context of promoting European values and support the European dimension of education as the dominant guideline of educational policies in European countries, implies the need for a new approach to curriculum design while development of intercultural competence of teachers, as moderators of intercultural relations, is an important component of their lifelong learning adapted to the needs and requirements of modern multicultural society.
