The case study reflects the impact of leasehold farming promoted on the livelihood of women group in Bhagwanpur RM. The data for the analysis of results of leasehold farming were collected through survey of the individual farmer involved and through key informant interview. The study revealed that people encouraged with the motivation from local government, supporting organizations and visitors of the site has brought measurable positive changes(food security, occupation, education, income, policy etc.) in the lives of the landless people and has set a good example among other local governments for its scaling.

Major concerns centered on the governance of the working sector stems from issues and challenges confronted in the protection of workers’ rights and welfare. This case study discusses the challenges faced by the workers in the Guimaras mango industry and the role of the local government in addressing the gaps in the protection of the workers’ rights and welfare. Findings from the 35 key informant interview with the workers show that there are major gaps concerning workers’ rights and welfare that still needs to address despite the efforts of the government to provide the necessary program, projects, and legislation for the industry. The local government has pursued public services on agricultural support and mechanisms for addressing some of the needs of the mango producers and local legislations on mango production, harvesting, and consumption to protect them and the industry. Major workers’ rights and welfare concerns are mainly on hazardous and dangerous work practices, the undependability of the mango industry as a primary source of income, low wage, and the unstable contractual-hiring of mango workers during the mango season— all have to undermine just to meet the supply needed as demanded by the market. To infer, the workers are essential key players of the mango industry; thus, their rights and welfare need to be appropriately protected. In addressing social justice, fairness, and equality, local governments, humanitarian groups, and helping organizations are encouraged to center their agenda on advancing the rights, interests, and welfare of the sector.

Shared leadership and proactivity in the New Ways of Working Shared leadership and proactivity in the New Ways of Working Increasingly, employees are experiencing so-called New Ways of Working (NWW), facilitated by advanced ICT. They must deal with more autonomy and responsibilities in combination with flexibility in time and location of work. It has been argued that NWW combine well with novel leadership styles, such as shared leadership, although this relationship has not been studied before. Similarly, the expected consequences of NWW on proactivity of employees and teams requires academic investigation. This paper reports on a study on the impact of NWW implementation on shared leadership and the proactivity within SNS REAAL (a large banking and insurance company in the Netherlands). The case study is particularly interesting since NWW employees (N = 51) are compared with non-NWW employees (N = 77). The results confirm that NWW have a positive, significant relationship with team proactivity behaviour. In addition, the implementation of NWW can have an indirect impact on the individual proactivity of employees, which is only effective if team proactivity is promoted. Merely implementing NWW will not result in shared leadership. The findings suggest that NWW characteristics, such as an open feedback culture, more autonomy, and internal entrepreneurship, are most effective in the pursuit of proactivity and shared leadership.

This chapter discusses the influence individuals have in the ICT standards development process. The chapter draws upon ideas underlying the theory of the Social Shaping of Technology (SST). Looking through the SST lens, a number of non-technical factors that influence ICT standards development are identified. A literature review on the role of the individual in ICT standards setting and a case study of the IEEE 802.11 Working Group (WG) show that in a standards body's WG, the backgrounds, skills, attitudes, and behaviour of the individual WG members are crucially important factors. Yet, the case study also shows that in most cases employees tend to represent the ideas and goals of their respective employer. The chapter observes that the non-technical factors are ignored all too often in the literature. It argues that a better understanding of the impact and interplay of these factors, specifically including the skills and attitudes of the WG members, will have significant implications both theoretical and managerial.

Additional opinions—that is, dissenting opinions, separate opinions, and declarations—are, by definition, the primary institutional mechanism through which judges can express their individual views on a particular decision, as distinct from the judgment or decision proclaimed on behalf of the institution. Therefore, within the public sphere they are the principal institutional manifestation of the individual—and thus the individuality—of the judge. Consequently, for those who seek to understand the impact of certain personal characteristics upon how a judge discharges their professional functions and, in turn, the wider institutional and systemic implications of the participation of individuals bearing those characteristics, the study of additional opinions would seem a useful analytical enterprise. Using gender diversity at the International Court of Justice as a case study, the purpose of this chapter is twofold: first, to explain the relationship between diversity and additional opinions, and second, to explore the methodological potential, and challenges, that the study of additional opinions entails.

A disability experienced by one family member impacts on all individuals in the family unit and influences their typical pattern of interaction. The process of individual and family adjustment to disability, a family crisis, is seen in a case study of Sam and his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. The individual, family and social adjustment issues, including redefinition of family, social, sexual and work roles, are examined in a real live context. Tentative recommendations for professionals working with families in which an individual becomes disabled are developed from personal interviews with Sam and his family.

A growing body of research examines the impact of recent teacher evaluation systems; however, we have limited knowledge on how these systems influence teacher retention. This study uses a mixed-methods design to examine teacher retention patterns during the pilot year of an evaluation system in an urban school district in Texas. We used difference-in-differences analysis to examine the impact of the new system on school-level teacher turnover and administered a teacher survey ( N = 1,301) to investigate individual and school-level factors influencing retention. This quantitative analysis was supplemented with interview data from two case study schools. Results suggest that, overall, the new evaluation system did not have a significant effect on teacher retention, but there was significant variation at the individual and school level. This study has important implications for policymakers developing new evaluation systems and researchers interested in evaluating their impact on retention.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the impact of action learning (AL) on an individual and an organisation, particularly the process by which each affected the other. The organisation is a UK National Health Service (NHS) Trust that includes two hospitals. Design/methodology/approach This is a single person case study involving a clinician, but the voice of an author can also be heard. It involves the experience of the individual as they experience AL as part of a leadership development programme leading to a postgraduate certificate. The authors explain their caution of the case study approach and in doing so offer their thoughts in how this paper could be read and impact on practice. Findings The authors show a process whereby an AL set participant moves from being confident about their project to one of uncertainty as the impact of the project ripples throughout the organisation. Through this process of unsettlement, the individual’s unnoticed assumptions are explored in ways that enable practical action to be taken. In doing so, the individual’s leadership and identity developed. Research limitations/implications This is a single person case study in one organisation, thus affecting wider generalisation. Originality/value This single case study contributes to the debate on critical AL and the use of AL in the NHS.

The research talks about the conflict of the land acquisition of Jatigede dam construction at Wado, Sumedang. This research has a purpose to know how the process of a land acquisition is, the causative factors of a land acquisition, the impacts of a land acquisition and the conflict resolution for the land acquisition of Jatigede dam construction in Wado. This research usedqualitative approach and case study method. The data collected with observation technique, deep interview and documentation study. The research informant consists of the land acquisition committee, the institution in Wado,the society figure and the people who got the impact. The result of this research shows that the process of a land acquisition make horizontal conflict and vertical conflict come up which caused by the individual differences and had a impact on social system and society economic. Active participation and teamwork is the most effective effort in solving the conflict of the land acquisition of Jatigede dam construction.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how the Chinese Central Government’s plan to alleviate brain drain, called the Thousand Talents Plan, has been glocalized by three major local governments: Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangdong. Design/methodology/approach The lens of glocalization pays special attention to the impact of local reactions to global forces. Materials from the Recruitment Program of Global Experts for three major cases were examined for glocal characteristics. An analysis of each case was carried out to compare the strategies and implementations to explore the individual glocalizations and larger national similarities. Findings The findings show that each of the localities has distinct regional variations in their strategies: Shanghai utilized its economic prowess, Tianjin focused on clustering experts, and Guangdong maximized its geographic proximity to Hong Kong. At the same time, all three policies were still rooted in human capital development theory, with a keen emphasis to attracting migrants with greater propensity for staying long term in China. Originality/value The study of brain drain is important because it is a problem that plagues communities around the world, especially non-western societies. While China’s tactics to combat brain drain have been examined, the consideration of glocalization in the cases of Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangdong have not been carried out.

Kailali is the second highest district regarding wheat production and area coverage. A study was carried out in the Kailali district for preference of farmers on different wheat varieties that were being cultivated in the district. The objective of the study was to assess farmers’ preference and perception on the different improved wheat varieties in the area. Five commonly grown wheat varieties and seventeen important wheat varietal traits were selected through focus group discussion, key informant interview and preliminary survey. Sixty households were selected for face-to-face personal interview, twelve for each selected variety, at random from Ghodaghodi Municipality, Gauriganga Municipality and Kailari Rural Municipality of Kailali. The weightage of the seventeen selected traits were determined using an online survey conducted among individuals from different designation with the agricultural background who were well known about wheat cultivation practices in Kailali district. Yield, flour quality and tillering were found to be the trait of higher weightage and stem thickness was the trait of lowest weightage. The preferences of the farmers were measured using wheat preference index (WPI). The varieties Vijay, NL-971, HD-2967, Gautam and Aditya were ranked as I, II, III, IV and V respectively. The incorporation of farmers' preferred traits in future wheat varieties would increase the likelihood of adoption of the varieties. Similarly, proper participatory field trial of new improved wheat varieties would also help in the selection of the suitable varieties in the area concerning the farmers’ criteria of selection. Int.
